Abstract:Optical micro/nanofihers are one-dimensional free-standing waveguiding structures with diameters close to or smaller than the vacuum wavelength of the guided light. Fabricated by physically drawing glass fiber at high temperature these fibers show excellent surface smoothness and diameter uniformity, high mechanical strength, tight optical confinement, strong evanescent field, evident surface field enhancement, and large wavelength/diameter-dependent waveguide dispersion, especially much lower waveguiding loss than all other micro/nanowaveguides with similar geometries. These merits offer them great potentials in applications ranging from near field optical coupling, optical sensing, atom optics, nonlinear optics, laser technology, and optomechanics. In this review, starting from the basic waveguiding properties of optical micro/nanofihers, we introduce our recent progress in high precision fiber fabrication and micro/nanofiber-based near field coupling, optical sensors, and nonlinear optical devices. At same time, we also mention relative works from other groups. Finally, we conclude this article with a brief outlook.

Abstract:We present our latest progresses on the development of integrated photonic devices as well as microfluidic chips of unprecedented characteristics and performances using femtosecond laser micromachining. We demonstrate ultra-high Q microresonators in lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI), on-chip micro-laser and waveguide amplifier, and high-throughput micro-chemical reactor. The achievements are the result of persistent effort on improving the precision and efficiency in ultrafast laser processing.

Abstract:High-power laser delivery in infrared optical fiber has received much attention due to the urgent needs in the fields of national defense security, biomedicine, advanced manufacturing, and so on. In recent decades, there has been extensive research aimed at enhancing the capabilities of infrared laser power delivery through the purification of infrared glass or the optimization of fiber structures. This article provides an overview of common passive mid-infrared (MIR) optical fibers with numerous glasses and fiber structures, as well as their characteristics in laser power delivery. This review also highlights potential research directions and analyzes the challenges of passive mid-infrared fibers in the current applications.

Abstract:With the advancements in the field of infrared micro-optical technologies, the preparation of infrared microoptical devices with high precision has attracted increased attention. There are many shortcomings in the traditional preparation technology. However, the femtosecond laser is suitable for preparing infrared micro-optical components because of its ultra- fast characteristics. Taking lens array, compound eye, grating, optical waveguide and photonic crystal as examples, the development of infrared micro- optical components with the femtosecond laser using different materials and manufacturing methods is introduced. The materials used are the infrared semiconductor, chalcogenide glass, and infrared polymer. The methods used are the femtosecond laser- induced chemical etching, femtosecond laser- assisted wet etching, and femtosecond laser- assisted dry etching. The applications and specific cases are discussed, and the future development trend of this technology is presented.

Abstract:The mid-infrared fiber lasers in the 2–3.5 μm spectral regions have been extensively applied in many application fields, such as biomedicine, telecommunications, military and nonlinear optics. With the improvements of the fiber components, the pumping regimes and other related technologies, the mid-infrared fiber lasers have made significant progress over the past decades and gradually become comparable with or supersede the traditional lasers in terms of certain lasing performance. In this review, from the beginning with the overview of fiber materials for the mid-infrared regions, we briefly summarize and review the latest research progress of mid-infrared continuous-wave (CW) and short pulse fiber lasers, including Tm3+-, Ho3+-doped, Tm3+-Ho3+ co-doped silicate fiber lasers for the 2 μm region and Er3+-, Ho3+-doped, Ho3+-Pr3+ co-doped ZBLAN fiber lasers for the 2.8–3.5 μm region. The advances of saturable absorbers applied in the mid-infrared pulse fiber lasers are also explored. Finally, the future prospects and challenges concerning the further development of mid-infrared fiber lasers are discussed and highlighted.

Abstract:Since the mid- (2–20 μm) and far-infrared (20–1000 μm) regions cover the vibration and rotation characteristic "fingerprint" spectra of many gas molecules and three atmospheric transmission windows (2–2.5 μm, 3.5–5 μm and 8–14 μm), the mid- and far-infrared pulsed laser sources and novel photonic devices have been widely applied, such as molecular spectroscopy, materials processing, gas sensing, free-space communications, and medicine. Low-dimensional materials exhibit great potential in mid- and far-infrared pulsed laser and photonic devices because of their high third-order nonlinear coefficient, ultrafast carrier dynamics, and excellent optics and electricity properties. However, relatively little is known of low-dimensional materials-based mid- and far-infrared photonics, and a review of the fabrication and properties of low-dimensional materials in mid- and far-infrared photonics has not been reported. In this contribution, this review starts with an introduction to the synthesis and optical response of low-dimensional materials. In the following sections, the developments of low-dimensional materials-based mid- and far-infrared photonics are comprehensively summarized, including pulsed lasers, optical modulators, and photodetectors. Finally, perspectives and challenges regarding the design of low-dimensional materials-based photonics are provided.

Abstract:A 3–5 μm mid-infrared band is a good window for atmospheric transmission. It has the advantages of high contrast and strong penetration under high humidity conditions. Therefore, it has important applications in the fields of laser medicine, laser radar, environmental monitoring, remote sensing, molecular spectroscopy, industrial processing, space communication and photoelectric confrontation. In this paper, the application background of mid-infrared laser is summarized. The ways to realize mid-infrared laser output are described by optical parametric oscillation, mid-infrared solid-state laser doped with different active ions and fiber laser doped with different rare earth ions. The advantages and disadvantages of various mid-infrared lasers are briefly described. The technical approaches, schemes and research status of mid-infrared lasers are introduced.

Abstract:The anti-reflection properties of hard material surfaces are of great significance in the fields of infrared imaging, optoelectronic devices, and aerospace. Femtosecond laser processing has drawn a lot of attentions in the field of optics as an innovative, efficient, and green micro-nano processing method. The anti-reflection surface prepared on hard materials by femtosecond laser processing technology has good anti-reflection properties under a broad spectrum with all angles, effectively suppresses reflection, and improves light transmittance/absorption. In this review, the recent advances on femtosecond laser processing of anti-reflection surfaces on hard materials are summarized. The principle of anti-reflection structure and the selection of anti-reflection materials in different applications are elaborated upon. Finally, the limitations and challenges of the current anti-reflection surface are discussed, and the future development trend of the anti-reflection surface are prospected.

Abstract:Femtosecond laser direct-writing technology is being increasingly employed in the fabrication of integrated optoelectronic and optical sensor devices.This technology is popular due to its precision,efficiency,brief pulse duration,substantial peak power,and versatility in material processing.In recent years,the advancements in femtosecond laser direct writing,specifically in the context of optical waveguide amplifiers and lasers have garnered increasing research attention.This article mainly introduces the latest research progress of femtosecond laser direct writing optical waveguide amplifiers and lasers,including waveguide transmission and insertion losses,optical amplification gain characteristics,and waveguide laser output characteristics of Type-I,Type-II,ridge,and variable cross-section optical waveguide amplifiers and lasers.Finally,the paper concludes with a synthesis and analysis of the current technological progress,along with a prospective outlook on the future research,applications,and development trends within this domain.

Abstract:Fiber lasers have wide applications in fiber communication, and laser micromachining. Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is one of the key components of all fiber lasers. The fabrication technique of FBG that uses femtosecond laser has received considerable attention owing to its advantages such as wide applicability for various fiber materials, simple process, and fabricated FBG with high temperature resistance compared with the traditional FBG inscription technique. It has been widely used in all fiber lasers. This study introduces the basic methods, characteristics, and advantages of the technique of inscribing FRG with a femtosecond laser. Then, the latest research advances in the application of femtosecond laser-inscribed FI-IGs on fiber lasers with different wavelengths and types arc demonstrated. Finally, the future development of this technology is discussed.

Abstract:Since the advent of Fourier Domain Mode-Locked (FDML) lasers, they have demonstrated outstanding performance in several fields. They achieve high-speed, narrow-linewidth laser output with the new mode-locking mechanism, which has been intensively researched in the past decades. Compared with conventional wavelength-scanning light sources, FDML lasers have successfully increased the scanning rate of frequency-sweeping lasers from kHz to MHz. They are widely used in optical coherence tomography, spectral analysis, microscopy, and microwave photonics. With the deepening research on FDML lasers, several performance metrics have been optimized and improved, offering superior performance for FDML laser-based applications. This paper reviews the principles and key performance indicators of FDML lasers, as well as the recent progress made in some important applications, and highlights further research directions for FDML lasers in the future.

Abstract:Pulse fiber lasers operating at 3 μm mid-infrared spectral region have numerous applications in defense, military, biomedicine and atmospheric communication. The graphene two-dimensional materials have drawn great attentions as saturable absorbers in the mid-infrared spectral region owing to their highlighted advantages such as convenient integration and compact all-fiber structure. We introduce the atomic structures and the optical properties of two-dimensional materials including graphene, black phosphorus, topological insulators, and transition metal sulfide. The mechanism and characteristics of the pulse mid-infrared fiber lasers based on these two-dimensional materials are introduced. Recent experimental achievements in the area of mid-infra red pulse fiber lasers utilizing two-dimensional materials are summarized. The future prospects of two-dimensional materials based pulse fiber lasers are also discussed.

Abstract:Recently, the far-infrared (FIR) laser (lambda(0) 0 = 432 mu m) Faraday rotation measurement system on MST has been upgraded. The dc flowing-gas discharge CO2 pump laser is replaced by a rf-excited, sealed CO2 laser at 9.27 mu m (GEM select 100, Coherent Inc., Santa Clara, CA), which is subdivided equally into three parts to simultaneously pump three FIR cavities. The total infrared pump power is approximately 80 W on the 9R (20) line required to pump the formic acid molecule. Each FIR cavity produces similar to 12 mW, sufficient for 11 simultaneous chord interferometry-polarimetry operations. Three key issues [(1) conservation of circularly polarized wave, (2) colinearity of two probe waves, and (3) stability of intermediate frequencies between lasers] affecting the Faraday rotation measurement have been resolved experimentally.
