Abstract:The aromatic polyamide(PA)composite membrane,which is the most successful commercial reverse osmosis(RO) membrane,has been widely used in the field of water treatment. The thorough analysis of PA membrane is helpful to innovate the design of substitute membrane. Molecular dynamics(MD)simulation is an effective tool to investigate the microscopic structure and molecular behavior of the materials,and can be used to study the polymerization,structure and performances of PA membrane. Based on the summary of the physicochemical properties of polyamide RO membrane, this paper reviews the progress of MD simulation study on PA RO membrane,including the polymerization mechanism,molecular structure,diffusion of water and solute inside the membrane and the mechanism of membrane fouling. Due to the limitations in research scale and subjects,it is difficult for MD simulation to resolve the issues of structure analysis in macroscopic level and the ionization equilibrium in PA membrane. Therefore,we propose to combine MD simulation with other experimental test and simulation methods for the PA membrane study.
Effect of the Permeants/Polymer Interactions on the Pervaporative Separation Properties of the P(Vdf-Co-Hfp) Membrane

Abstract:In this paper, the acetone-cast poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (P(VDF-co-HFP)) membranes were prepared by isothermally vacuum-dried at 60°C and were employed in pervaporation of methyl acetate (MeAc) or ethyl acetate (EtAc) dissolved water solutions. DSC study on the swelling process indicated that two states of both MeAc and EtAc in their swollen P(VDF-co-HFP) membranes might exist which were the ‘bound state’ and ‘bulk state’. In addition, relative to the pure EtAc, the pure MeAc had stronger interaction with the P(VDF-co-HFP) membrane, making for its higher solubility in and lower diffusivity through the membrane. However, there is a competition between the organic permeants/water interactions and the organic permeants/polymer interactions when the P(VDF-co-HFP) membrane was tested for its pervaporative separating properties. With respect to MeAc in its water mixtures, EtAc in its water mixtures had higher solubility in the membrane instead because of its weaker interaction with water. As a result, better separating properties (higher permeate flux and separation factor) when the P(VDF-co-HFP) membrane was in pervaporation of the EtAc/water mixtures were obtained.

Abstract:Reverse osmosis through a polyamide (PA) membrane is an important technique for water desalination and purification. In this study, molecular dynamics simulations were performed to study the biofouling mechanism (i.e., protein adsorption) and nonequilibrium steady-state water transfer of a cross-linked PA membrane. Our results demonstrated that the PA membrane surface's roughness is a key factor of surface's biofouling, as the lysozyme protein adsorbed on the surface's cavity site displays extremely low surface diffusivity, blocking water passage, and decreasing water flux. The adsorbed protein undergoes secondary structural changes, particularly in the pressure-driven flowing conditions, leading to strong protein-surface interactions. Our simulations were able to present water permeation close to the experimental conditions with a pressure difference as low as 5 MPa, while all the electrolytes, which are tightly surrounded by hydration water, were effectively rejected at the membrane surfaces. The analysis of the self-intermediate scattering function demonstrates that the dynamics of water molecules coordinated with hydrogen bonds is faster inside the pores than during the translation across the pores. The pressure difference applied shows a negligible effect on the water structure and content inside the membrane but facilitates the transportation of hydrogen-bonded water molecules through the membrane's sub-nanopores with a reduced coordination number. The linear relationship between the water flux and the pressure difference demonstrates the applicability of continuum hydrodynamic principles and thus the stability of the membrane structure.

Abstract:Pervaporation is a green,highly efficient technology of membrane separation.In order to develop the ideal membrane of pervaporation,the mass transfer mechanism for pervaporation becomes a research focus.This paper reviews several models and theories of the mass transfer process for pervaporation,including conventional and modified solution-diffusion model,pore flow model, Maxwell-Stephan theory,and molecular simulation.The characteristics and applicability of the models are compared.And the application status of the models and theories are also introduced.The research progress of the models is discussed.

Abstract:It is necessary to modify polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) before using it as separation membrane because of its excessive swelling. In this paper,modification methods of PVA are reviewed,including crosslinking, grafting,blending,hybridization and substitution;their advantages and disadvantages are listed;and some comments are given for problems in modification methods. The application of modified PVA membrane is presented in detail. The development and application of PVA pervaporation membrane with excellent hydrophilicity and PVA membrane with high conductivity and low methanol permeability for fuel cell are prospected,respectively.

Abstract:Membrane materials with excellent selectivity and high permeability are the key for high-efficiency membrane separation. New-type porous materials have developed as ideal building blocks for molecular sieving membranes due to their inherent properties, such as permanent porosity, high surface area, structural diversity and low mass transfer barriers. In actual industrial promotion and separation applications, porous materials need to be combined with substrates to prepare porous composite membranes. In order to reduce costs and increase processing flexibility, the combination of organic polymer substrates and porous materials has received more attentions. The multifunctional design strategy of the membrane material and membrane structure of porous composite membranes based on the organic subatrates is the key to realize the further improvement of mass transfer. In this review, we focus on the organic matrix porous composite membrane based on the participation of inorganic-organic hybrid materials and organic-organic composite materials, and conduct an in-depth discussion on the transport mechanism of porous composite membranes, and highlight diverse structural control strategies from the perspectives of macrostructural design and microstructural regulation of membrane structures. Finally, the applications of porous composite membrane based on organic substrate in precise molecular sieving are summarized, and the future opportunities and challenges in this field are discussed briefly.

Abstract:Metal-organic framework (MOF)-based mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) have attracted significant attentions for their distinguished characteristics in pervaporation such as enhanced selectivity, increased permeability and improved mechanical strength through the synergistic integration of polymeric matrices and inorganic fillers. Although many publications have emerged in recent years focusing on MOF-based MMMs, this review specifically emphasizes the improvement of MOF-based pervaporation membranes through the design of dimension of fillers and microstructure. The challenges encountered in MOF-based MMMs for pervaporation and the essential requirements for practical separation applications are addressed. A brief summary of strategies is provided for designing MOF-based MMMs with desired microstructure, macrostructure and multicomponent characteristics by using MOFs as fillers. The latest progresses in novel MOF-based MMMs with specific compositions, controllable pore structure and improved compatibility for recovery of organics are also displayed. The broad application prospects of MOF-based MMMs in pervaporation are introduced, including recovery of ethyl alcohol, butanol and other organics. Moreover, the challenges faced in the practical application of MOF-based MMMs for recovery of organics are presented and the promising future directions are outlined.

Abstract:<p>Pervaporation is a molecular separation membrane technology for selective permeation of water or organic compounds from organic-water mixtures or organic-organic mixtures. The pervaporation process is controlled by thermodynamic partitioning and kinetic mobility of molecules in the membrane. The chemical property and morphology of membrane materials can be engineered to tailor the complementary sorption and diffusion coefficient and selectivity, and thus the permeability (or flux) and selectivity (or separation factor). In this review, we highlight the latest progresses of pervaporation membrane materials, including pure polymeric membranes and inorganic membranes, as well as mixed-matrix membranes and emerging two-dimensional-material membranes. Challenges and future opportunities in materials design, fabrication and structure-performance relationship are identified to develop next-generation pervaporation membranes with enhanced separation efficiency.</p>

Abstract:Today, chemistry and nanotechnology cover molecular separations in liquid and gas states by aiding in the design of new nano-sized materials. In this regard, the synthesis and application of two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials are current fields of research in which structurally defined 2D materials are being used in membrane separation either in self-standing membranes or composites with polymer phases. For instance, pervaporation (PV), as a highly selective technology for liquid separation, benefits from using 2D materials to selectively transport water or other solvent molecules. Therefore, this review paper offers an interesting update in revising the ongoing progress of PV membranes using 2D materials in several applications, including solvent purification (the removal of water from organic systems), organics removal (the removal of organic molecules diluted in water systems), and desalination (selective water transport from seawater). In general, recent reports from the past 3 years have been discussed and analyzed. Attention has been devoted to the proposed strategies and fabrication of membranes for the inclusion of 2D materials into polymer phases. Finally, the future trends and current research gaps are declared for the scientists in the field.

Abstract:The membrane, a core element in pervaporation technology, is of utmost importance for its advancement. Membrane modification is one of the most effective means of achieving an efficient membrane, which is crucial for the progress of this technology. High selectivity and flux can be achieved by modifying the membrane or membrane polymer by changing properties such as the surface energy, surface roughness, arrangement of polymer chains, and polymer network. Hence, recent publications on various methods for modifying polymeric membranes in the context of pervaporation applications are meticulously summarized and categorized, and aging and fouling factors have been mentioned in this review. This evaluation provided a thorough summary of the benefits and drawbacks of each method. Among the numerous techniques, mixing, crosslinking, and surface modification are commonly employed to modify polymeric membranes specifically tailored for pervaporation processes.

Abstract:Pervaporation is a newly emerged separation process, known for its higher efficiency, lower energy consumption lower capital cost and so on. The main research field in pervaporation falls into three aspects: 1) the investigation of new membranes of good separation performance; 2) methods for manufacturing pervaporation membrane with high performance; 3) process modeling to find the bottleneck in the separation process. To date, lots of research papers are published and patents concerning the above mentioned research aspects have also been brought into the sight of those skilled in the art. As a branch membrane for pervaporation purpose, an ion exchange membrane, which is prepared from the charged polymers containing either anionic or cationic groups, has an important influence on the development of pervaporation. This paper thus discusses some valuable patents concerning the research of ion exchange membrane for pervaporation. Some basic processes using anionic membrane or cationic membrane, ways for the modification of charged polymers, manufacturing of pervaporation membrane and some insights of the mass transfer behavior are reviewed in this paper and finally a perspective conclusion is made. Abstract:Membrane separation process has become one of the emerging technologies that undergo a rapid growth for the past few decades. Pervaporation is one of the membrane separation processes that have gained increasing interest in the chemical and allied industries. It is an effective and energy-efficient technology that carries out separations, which are difficult to achieve by conventional separation processes. Inorganic membrane such as zeolite membranes with uniform, molecular-sized pores offer unique type of pervaporation membrane for a number of separation processes. This review presents the role of zeolite membrane and its progress in the pervaporation process. The fundamental aspects of pervaporation over different types of membranes are reviewed and compared. The focus of this review is on zeolite membrane covering: (a) synthesis of zeolite membranes; (b) membrane characterization; (c) pervaporation studies; (d) its applications in alcohol dehydration, organic/organic separations and acid separations. The transport mechanism during pervaporation is discussed and the issues related with pervaporation are addressed. Innovation and future development of zeolite membrane in pervaporation are also presented.

Abstract:High-performance pervaporation membrane has great application and development potential in alcohols/water separation industry due to its high efficiency and economy. It is an important pathway to alleviate the fossil energy crisis and obtain various alcohols scientifically. As a new type of porous crystal material, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with controllable pore structure and rich chemical functions are promising for constructing high-performance alcohols/water separation membranes for future manufacturing development. There are different types of MOFs and COFs based pervaporation membranes, including MOFs polycrystalline membranes, MOFs based mixed matrix membranes (MMMs), COFs continuous membranes, and COFs based MMMs. In this review, we firstly discuss the classification of membranes, describe the process mechanism and evaluation indicators of pervaporation, select decisive criterions for MOFs and COFs, summary the preparation strategies and separation performance of these four membranes, and discuss in detail the impact of operating conditions. Finally, the advantages and disadvantages of these four kinds of membranes are summarized, the challenges faced are identified, and the future development direction is pointed out, aiming to provide slight guidance for the design and development of high-performance MOFs and COFs based membranes for alcohols/water separation in the future.
