Abstract:A nanostructured SiC coating was prepared on the surface of carbon fibers by slurry coating and in situ reaction sintering. Phases of the coating were identified by X-ray diffraction, and features and structure were investigated by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The oxidation resistant properties of the carbon fibers with and without the SiC coating were studied using isothermal oxidation. The results show that the nanostructured SiC coating was uniform and its coverage was complete. The oxidation activation energy of the fibers increased about 25% and the oxidation resistant of the coated fibers increases significantly.
Long-time oxidation behavior of the nearly stoichiometric polycrystalline SiC fibers under air atmosphere at different temperatures

Abstract:SiC fibers are important reinforcements due to their excellent oxidation and high-temperature resistance. In this work, near-stoichiometric polycrystalline SiC fibers were oxidized in air at 1200 °C to 1600 °C for up to 100 h. The thickness of the oxide layer reached 1.9 µm after oxidation at 1400 °C for 100 h. Wide cracks appeared on the surface due to residual stress. Activation energy was comparable to that of commercial SiC fibers. The results in this work could provide important reference for such SiC fibers to be applied in the fields of aviation, aerospace, and nuclear power.

Abstract:The thermal stability of the SiC ultrafine fibers is affected due to the large amounts of oxygen introduced during the oxidative curing process. In this work, cyano-polycarbosilane (PCSCN) and cyano-polyaluminocarbosilane (PACSCN) are synthesized by hydrosilylation reaction between PCS and acrylonitrile using a common radical initiator 2,2-azodiisobutyronitrile (AIBN). The results show that the main hydrosilylation reaction is α-addition, although some side-reactions of AN polymerization also occur. The PCSCN and PACSCN ultrafine fibers are obtained by electrospinning and can be cured directly by thermal treatment without oxidative curing in an inert atmosphere, due to the crosslinking reactions occurring between Si-H bonds and -C≡N groups. By thermal pyrolysis of the cured ultrafine fibers at 1200 °C, the SiC ultrafine fibers with smooth and dense structure are obtained with oxygen contents as low as 3.10 wt%. The dense structure of the PCSCN-derived and PACSCN-derived SiC ultrafine fibers can be maintained up to 1600 °C and 1800 °C, with oxygen contents of 2.16 wt% and 0.22 wt%, respectively. The existence of Al element in the SiC ultrafine can increase the compactness of the fibers, suppress the growth of β-SiC and favor the formation of α-SiC at higher temperatures.

Abstract:Continuous silicon carbide fiber–reinforced silicon carbide matrix (SiCf/SiC) composites have developed into a promising candidate for structural materials for high–temperature applications in aerospace engine systems. This is due to their advantageous properties, such as low density, high hardness and strength, and excellent high temperature and oxidation resistance. In this study, SiCf/SiC composites were fabricated via polymer infiltration and pyrolysis (PIP) with the lower–oxygen–content KD–II SiC fiber as the reinforcement; a mixture of 2,4,6,8–tetravinyl–2,4,6,8–tetramethylcyclotetrasiloxane (V4) and liquid polycarbosilane (LPCS), known as LPVCS, was used as the precursor; while pyrolytic carbon (PyC) was used as the interface. The effects of oxidation treatment at different temperatures on morphology, structure, composition, and mechanical properties of the KD–II SiC fibers, SiC matrix from LPVCS precursor conversion, and SiCf/SiC composites were comprehensively investigated. The results revealed that the oxidation treatment greatly impacted the mechanical properties of the SiC fiber, thereby significantly influencing the mechanical properties of the SiCf/SiC composite. After oxidation at 1300°C for 1h, the strength retention rates of the fiber and composite were 41% and 49%, respectively. In terms of the phase structure, oxidation treatment had little effect on the SiC fiber, while greatly influencing the SiC matrix. A weak peak corresponding to silica (SiO2) appeared after high–temperature treatment of the fiber; however, oxidation treatment of the matrix led to the appearance of a very strong diffraction peak that corresponds to SiO2. The analysis of the morphology and composition indicated cracking of the fiber surface after oxidation treatment, which was increasingly obvious with the increase in the oxidation treatment temperature. The elemental composition of the fiber surface changed significantly, with drastically decreased carbon element content and sharply increased oxygen element content.

Abstract:The near stoichiometric SiC fiber has been reported to play significant roles in the application of aero‐engine field. An in‐depth understanding on the degradation mechanism of the fiber during its corrosion in air and under a simulated aeroengine environment (PH2O: PO2: PAr = 14:8:78 kPa) will shine a light on the performance evaluations of the near stoichiometric SiC fiber‐based materials as well as the development of their potential applications. In this study, .XRD, SEM, and FIB‐TEM were utilized to analyze the mechanical properties and microstructure of the fiber. After oxidation in dry air and Ar‐H2O‐O2 for 1h, respectively the fiber strength retention rate has been found to decreases with the increased oxidation temperature. The raise in oxidation temperature also led to the increasing of the thickness and the crystallization rate of the oxide scale. The most different oxidation behavior of SiC being treated under the simulated environment than in air is the lower oxidation activation energy and the higher crystallization activation energy for cristobalite. Water vapor can promote the oxidation reaction and inhibit the crystallization of cristobalite in the oxide scale. Few significant differences have been observed otherwise in the oxidation process and oxidation chromatography crystallization mechanism of fibers being treated under different conditions.. The increase of oxide layer thickness and the formation of cristobalite impair the structural integrity and compactness of the oxide scale and thus leads to the deterioration of the mechanical properties of SiC fibers. Therefore, it is proposed that oxidation resistance of SiC fiber can be improved by insulating the reaction between the oxidizing agents and the SiC fiber, or by increasing the crystallization temperature of cristobalite in the oxidation process and reducing the crystallization rate. Abstract:Flexible ultrafine SiC fibers with superior high-temperature stability and excellent oxidation resistance are regarded as one of the most promising materials for high-temperature applications. However, excess oxygen and carbon in the ultrafine SiC fibers limit their thermal stability due to decomposition of the SiCxOy phase. In the present work, flexible ultrafine nearly stoichiometric polycrystalline SiC fibers were fabricated by combining the electrospinning technique and polymer-derived ceramic method. The ultrafine SiC fibers exhibited superior high-temperature stability and oxidation resistance. The retention rates of tensile strength were 90.0 %, 94.2 % and 86.4 % after heat treatment in argon at 1800 °C, 1900 °C and 2000 °C, respectively. TG results of the fibers showed little weight loss of only 1.52 % at 1900 °C in Ar and the weight gain of only 4.1 % up to 1500 °C in air. Such improved thermal stability was achieved through sintering at high temperature for elimination of excess oxygen and carbon with Al doped as the sintering aid to restrain the grain coarsening. The ultrafine SiC fibers still exhibited excellent flexibility without obvious damage when they were heated by the butane blowtorch flame of about 1100 °C in air. Furthermore, the infrared thermography illustrated that the ultrafine SiC fiber membrane also had good thermal insulation performance. The outstanding mechanical properties and thermal stability of ultrafine SiC fibers suggest their potential applications at the high temperature and harsh environment.

Abstract:The oxidation resistance of carbon fiber (CF) was enhanced by SiC coating layer. A hybrid sol–gel approach and chemical vapor reaction (CVR) were utilized to produce coating layer. SiO2 was applied to the CF surface, after which SiOx and SiH4 vapor were added via CVR method to intensify SiC formation and bonding. Interfacial bonding was further reinforced by the addition of graphene oxide (GO) prior to heat treatment. Three different samples were generated, and the gas liberated upon conversion to SiC was evaluated to determine relationships with microstructure. The amount of gas released differed depending on the chemical used in the sol–gel, and the mechanism of SiC formation under different conditions was also distinct. The results of a flame test indicated approximately 20% improvement in oxidation resistance compared to CF. The proposed SiC coating can circumvent the restricted process method that necessitates specialized equipment to manufacture high-quality CF with improved oxidation resistance.

Influence of SiC Coating on Antioxidation Property of Carbon Fibers

Abstract:In order to solve the oxidation of carbon fibers,a nano structured SiC coating on carbon fibers was fabricated by in-situ reaction with milled Si,C powders.The phases and morphology of the coatings were analyzed by means of X-ray diffraction(XRD) and scanning electron microscopy(SEM).Antioxidation properties of the coated and uncoated carbon fibers were researched by isothermal oxidation tests.The results show that the coating is uniform and compact,the coating is composed of nanostructured β-SiC,the thickness of the coating is about 60～120nm.The SiC coating can protect the carbon fiber against oxidation at the range of 400℃ to 700℃.There are oxidation etch pits on the uncoated fibers surface after isothermal oxidation treatment at 600℃ for 3h,while no obvious damage is found on the coated fibers surface.

Abstract:An in situ SiC nanowire–SiC–Si/SiC–Si protective coating was prepared on C/C composites by pack cementation and heat treatment. SiC nanowires suppressed the cracking of the coating by nanowire pullout and bridging and microcrack deflection, avoiding the oxidation of C/C composites. Results showed that the oxidation of the samples was a continuous weight gain process. The oxidation behavior was fitted to the parabolic–linear model and the final weight gain was 1.8% during thermogravimetric analysis from 50 to 1600°C. The oxidation behavior was fitted to the parabolic model and the final weight gain was 0.51% during isothermal oxidation at 800°C.
Effect and mechanism analysis of free carbon on the oxidation behaviour of SiC fibres

Abstract:Continuous SiC fibres have received widespread attention in the field of aero-engines due to their excellent mechanical properties and oxidation resistance. Free carbon is one of the main factors affecting the oxidation behaviour of SiC fibres, but its role and influence are still unclear. The oxidation behaviour of two types of SiC fibres with similar oxygen contents and crystallite sizes but different carbon-silicon ratios was investigated in this study. Free carbon did not significantly influence strength retention, but positively affected elastic modulus retention. The oxidised carbon-rich SiC fibres exhibited a thinner, smoother, and denser oxide scale. The oxidation rate of the carbon-rich fibres was lower than that of near-stoichiometric fibres after oxidising at 1200 °C. The oxidation activation energies of both were 170.44 ± 15.80 and 234.45 ± 24.94 kJ/mol, respectively. Free carbon can inhibit oxidation scale crystals at the beginning of oxidation while promoting crystallisation scale as oxidation intensifies. The oxidation scale crystals of carbon-rich fibres are mainly controlled by the interface, whereas those of near-stoichiometric fibres are mainly controlled by diffusion. A stress expansion zone was formed at the interface of the oxidised SiC fibres. Free carbon can enhance the internal stress of the stress expansion zone, resulting in lower residual compressive stress on the surface of carbon-rich SiC fibres. These results are significant for improving the oxidation resistance of SiC fibres by retaining free carbon.

Abstract:The XRD, SEM, isothermal oxidation-weight loss and non-isothermal TG-DTG were used to study the properties of SiC coatings/3-D braided carbon fiber(composite fiber) prepared by in-situ reaction method. The results show that coatings is coated symmetrically and combine well with every fiber of 3-D braids in proper reaction conditions, the oxidation resistance of composite fiber increase with the increase of SiC coatings thickness. The oxidation resistant properties and mechanism of composite fiber were studied also.
Influence Of Sic Coating On The Oxidation Behavior Of Pan Carbon Fiber At Elevated Temperatures

Abstract:SiC was coated on the surface of carbon fibers substrate by a reaction between thermally evaporated silicon and carbon at 1600 degrees C. SEM and XRD analyses show that the coatings obtained are composed of SiC grains and micro-crystals. The oxidation behavior of coated samples was investigated, and then their oxidation mechanisms were studied. The weight results show that carbon fibers loss weight after oxidation. However, carbon fibers with SiC coating gained weight after oxidation and the weight gain increased with the treatment temperature. The oxidation steps included oxidation of substrate by diffusion of oxygen through coating cracks, the reaction of oxygen and SiC coating and oxidation of coating by diffusion of oxygen through the oxide film. It can be concluded that SiC coatings which were prepared on carbon fibers can improve the oxidation resistance of carbon at elevated temperatures.

Abstract:The oxidation behavior and oxidation mechanism of carbon materials containing silicon and boron elements (C–Si–B materials) were investigated at different high temperatures in air. The carbon materials were prepared by oxidative pyrolysis of the polymer precursor, carborane-incorporated poly(dimethylsilylene-ethynylenephenyleneethynylene) (CB-PSEPE), at 800, 1000, or 1200°C for 1h under static air. Homogeneous dispersion of silicon and boron components in the carbon matrix could be achieved in the carbon materials after the pyrolysis. The oxidation behavior of the C–Si–B materials during the oxidation process was studied. The evolution of elemental composition and morphology of the surface layers of carbon materials was monitored by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. The results imply that the formation of protective borosilicate layer in the surface is the main mechanism to provide remarkable oxidation resistance of the carbon materials. The obtained borosilicate layer with a self-healing property can withstand oxidation at 1000°C in air.

Abstract:The reaction kinetics and mechanism of oxidation reaction of SiO_2 coating/3-D braided carbon fiber prepared by the sol-dipping method were studied systemly through XRD,SEM,isothermal weight-loss and non-isothermal TG-DTG methods. The results showed that the coating was coated symmetrically and combined well with fiber surface; In isothermal condition, when percent of weight loss was lower than 70%, the weight loss versus oxidation time showed liner relation and the reaction rate constant increased with the increase of temperature, the oxidation process was reaction-controlled in the first oxidation step, gas diffusion and chemical reaction controlled in the second oxidation step,demarcation point was 600 ℃; In non-isothermal condition, the oxidation properties of CB exhibited a self-catalytic characteristic.

Abstract:The micro-oxidation properties and mechanism of SiO2 coating/3-D carbon fiber braid was studied through non-isothermal TGA with multi-heating rates systematically. The results showed that in non-isothermal condition,the oxidation properties of CB exhibited a self-catalytic characteristic. The oxidation process of composite was a complex stage: When α≤10%, oxidation stage of CB was mainly controlled by chemistry reaction, the corresponding Ea was 138.619kJ·mol-1; With the increase of α(55%≥α>10%), the oxidation process was controlled by chemical reaction and gas diffusion together, and the Ea was up to minimum 54.524 kJmol-1 when α equaled to 55%; When α>55%, the chemical reaction influence became greater, which led to the increase of Ea with the increase of α. The influence of heating rates on the thermal oxidation stability of CB was also studied through overlap peak solving.
Synthesis and Properties of Chemically Modified Polycarbosilane Containing Organofluoric Groups

Abstract:The chemically modified polycarbosilane (PC) containing organofluoric groups, PCOCF, was synthesized through chemical reaction of PC and fluoric alcohol. Pyrolysis of the polymer precursor occurred in three stages under 1000 °C. Weight loss due to evaporation of low molecular compounds was observed at the first stage below 300 °C, followed by the largest weight loss from 300 to 600 °C at the second stage. At this stage, side chains formed during the chemical reaction were removed. Finally, side chains such as Si–CH3 decomposed at the third stage above 600 °C. At 1000 °C, the chemical modification of PC resulted in high yield of solid product. After coating PCOCF on silicon carbide (SiC) powders, the conversion yield of pyrolyzed PCOCF was further improved due to the interaction between PCOCF and SiC powders. Coating of PCOCF on SiC powders was found to be effective in increasing the green density of uniaxially pressed bodies.
The Structural Evolutions and Enhanced Thermal Stability of Al Cation-Modified Silicon Oxycarbide Ceramics

Abstract:Al-doped-SiOC ceramics were fabricated via condensation polymerization and then pyrolysis of preceramic precursor in this study. The Al cation induced the formation of mullite, SiO2 and graphitic carbon. Results showed that the incorporation of Al element enhanced the thermal stability of SiOC ceramics under Ar atmosphere via suppressing carbothermal reduction. This was consistent with the observation from Raman spectra by curve-fitting according to the D-to-G peak intensity ratio. In addition, the thermal stability of the SiAlOC ceramics under air atmosphere was also investigated. The formation of the mullite phase under the air atmosphere indicated that the SiAlOC ceramics possessed better oxidation resistance properties than the pure SiOC ceramics. This work provides a new guide to fabricating metal-modified SiOC ceramics with desired structures.

Abstract:Potentially low-cost, continuous carbon fiber (CF) was prepared by meltblown spinning of solvated mesophase pitch, followed by drying, oxidation and carbonization. The drying and oxidation stabilization of the spun fiber was investigated by thermal analysis to understand the thermal behavior of the fiber and to improve the mechanical properties of the resulting CFs. The solvents in the spun fiber can be almost completely removed by heating the fiber in the flowing N2 or argon. In contrast, less amounts of solvents were removed as the spun fiber was dried in air because some solvents could be oxidized and/or trapped by the oxidized pitch materials. The separate drying and oxidation processes not only remove solvents effectively, but also promote oxidation stabilization. Thin fiber gains more weight (oxygen uptake) than the thick fiber at the same stabilization conditions. Moisture is easily adsorbed onto the stabilized fibers due to the formation of oxygen-containing groups. The moisture uptake increases proportionally with oxidation time. As compared with simultaneous drying and oxidation in air, the separate drying and oxidation processes provide the prepared CF with a significant improvement in tensile strength and modulus. For larger diameter fibers, the optimum oxidation condition is 350 °C for 30–60 min; for smaller diameter fibers, it is only about 2 min. Due to shorter oxidation time, higher carbon yield is achieved in resulting CFs.

Abstract:A SiO2-SiC coating on 3-D carbon fiber perform (raw perform) was successfully prepared through several steps. The appearance and composition of the coating/3-D carbon fiber preform (coated perform=CP) was studied through IR, XRD and SEM. The isothermal weight-loss and non-isothermal thermogravimetric (TGA) were used to study the oxidation behavior of CP. The results showed that a uniform coating on every fiber of preform was achieved and the coating adhered well with fiber. The oxidation process of CP in isothermal condition was reaction-controlled in the first step, gas diffusion and reaction-controlled in the second step. The characteristic of the oxidation process in non-isothermal condition was self-catalytic.
