Abstract:The structure of the high-voltage pulse-transmission electric cable was designed.The design of high-voltage insulation layer and the insulation material were discussed.Based on what mentioned above,the insulating resistance and the wave resistance tests of the high-voltage pulse-transmission electric cable were carried out.The test results show that the high-voltage pulse-transmission electric cable has good insulating property and little wave resistance,which meets the challenges of the plasma drill.
Investigation of Electrical and Thermal Behavior of Modified Epoxy Structures for DC and High Frequency Applications

Abstract:Epoxy resin insulations are considered as a potential candidate for various applications like transformers, cable terminations, power electronic device packaging, and bushings. This has promoted a great interest in their use as high voltage insulation materials for high frequency applications. This work presents the effect of different curing agent concentrations on the electrical and thermal properties of epoxy resin for DC and high frequency applications. Differential scanning calorimetry is used to characterize the thermal performance of the materials. The insulation properties such as breakdown measurements under DC and high frequency stress, DC resistivity, and space charge distributions at different temperatures, and dielectric spectroscopy at different frequencies and temperatures are performed. Results reveal that high curing agent concentrations optimize the thermal and electrical performance of epoxy resin insulation. However, high frequency stress severely degrades the breakdown and dielectric properties of all the prepared materials. By the control of resin stoichiometry, epoxy resin with suitable electrical and thermal properties can be realized for high frequency applications.
Interfacial Microstructure and Insulation Properties of 500 Kv EHVDC XLPE Cable Factory Joint under Different Roughness and Degassing Durations

Abstract:This paper analyzes the microstructure and electrical insulation characteristics at the interface of 500 kV cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) cable factory joints for extra high voltage direct current (EHVDC) application. The interface between two layers was polished by different grit sandpapers (80, 400, 1000, 2000, and 0000 (unpolished)). The samples (#1000) polished by 1000 grit mesh at the interface were degassed at 70 degrees C for 0, 12, 36, 90, and 200 h, respectively. Physico-chemical and electrical experiments were performed on the prepared test samples. It is found that increasing the number of sandpaper grit meshes reduces the average lamellae thickness at the interface and increases the crystallinity. Moreover, microporous defects are observed at the interface. The parameters viz elongation at break, current density, and the number of microporous defects increase initially and then decrease. However, the space charge accumulation, threshold electric field strength, and DC breakdown decrease initially and then increase. Notably, the #1000 roughness is a turning point. On the other side, degassing treatment promotes the orderly folding and recrystallization of the molecular chains arranged the amorphous region and significantly reduces the microporous defects at the interface. The mechanical properties are affected to a certain extent. The improved microstructure reduces the space charge accumulation and the current density of the sample, and increases the DC breakdown strength. An interfacial microscopic model and a charge transport model are proposed to analyze the mechanism of material properties under different roughnesses and electric fields. The results indicate that the ultra-smooth interface and degassing treatment strengthen the molecular chain linking at the interface. Moreover, they significantly reduce the microporous defects at the interface and improve the insulation properties of the factory joint. (C) 2021 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:An optimal degassing treatment duration for the preparation of commercial 500 kV extra high voltage direct current (EHVDC) cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulation can improve its overall properties, reduce the manufacturing cost and time, which is urgently needed for high voltage cables suppliers. This paper analyzes the effect of different degassing duration on the content of cross-linking by-products, morphological structure and insulation properties of 500 kV EHVDC XLPE insulation. The raw pellets of commercial 500 kV EHVDC XLPE cable material are used to prepare the test samples by the hot-pressing method. Five samples with the different degassing durations of 0 h, 12 h, 36 h, 90 h, and 200 h were at 70 degrees C. Physico-chemical and electrical methods are used to characterize the overall properties of the material under the different degassing durations. The results show that the measured content of the crosslinking by-products is consistent with the theoretical values calculated by Fick's second law. The oxidation induction time of the samples is reduced and tensile properties are improved with the increase of the degassing time. Furthermore, degassing treatment increased the lamellae thickness in the early stages and reduced the difference in the internal aggregation structure of the material. It was found that the degassing treatment significantly suppressed the space charge accumulation inside the material. Moreover, the degassing treatment of 36 h can increase the dielectric breakdown strength and reduce the current density of the samples. (C) 2021 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:With the increase of transmission voltage and capacity, epoxy resin for high-voltage electrical equipment was facing great challenges, and the modification of resin materials has become an important topic in current research. This paper summarized the modification methods of epoxy resin for high-voltage electrical apparatus in recent years and introduced the progress of epoxy resin in toughening modification, high heat resistance, high thermal conductivity, and electrical property regulation, and respectively discussed the modification methods of epoxy resin. The modification methods of epoxy resin were studied, which provide a certain reference for developing the epoxy resin with excellent performance.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to provide a preparation method of epoxy resin with high thermal conductivity transformer casting. Adding metal oxide and nitride such as silicon nitride, boron nitride, aluminum nitride and so on into epoxy resin, so that the interface structure of the epoxy resin can be effectively changed, the thermal conductivity of the filling material is greatly improved. It greatly avoids the influence of temperature on its internal parameters, so that the transformer can works smoothly. However, the addition of thermal conductive fillers will affect its dielectric properties (such as Insulation strength, dielectric loss and conductivity characteristics) and mechanical stability. This paper solves the problem of how to improve the thermal conductivity and ensure the dielectric and mechanical properties.

Abstract:The security and reliability of plastic insulated layer of super-high voltage cable must be tested through certain exterior conductive coating that was formed up-to-date only by smearing with dry conductive graphite powder.The new types of liquid solidified conductive composite coatings on exterior plastic insulated layer of the cable with different prescriptions of epoxy resin and conductive graphite were prepared to replace the above-mentioned dry powder coating that has several demerits such as inducing environmental pollution and worker physical harmfulness during daubing process,worn away easily by transportation and pavement of the cable,and so on.It is shown by testing conductivity and adhesion of the developed coatings that the coating conductivity appeares evidently once conductive graphite content reached the seepage critical value (SCV) and increases with increasing amount of filled graphite,but the coating adhesion gradually decreases.The minimum electric resistance is 3 650 Ω when graphite content is 1.5 SCV.The friction and wear characteristics of these coatings were evaluated at M2000 tribo-tester.The results indicate that the graphite filled in epoxy resin can effectively improve the conductivity and wear resistance,the specific wear rate reached minimum value 1.791×10-10 mm3/(N·m) when graphite content is 1.25 SCV,and the integrated properties of this composite coating is optimum.Based on morphology of worn surface observed by SEM,the wear mechanisms of the coatings were discussed.

Abstract:DC power transmission has become more and more important in power grid construction, and the HVDC cable is one of the most important power devices. However, due to long-time monopoly by foreign firms, China has no enough ability in mass production of stable and reliable HVDC cable insulating materials and shielding materials at present, thus it is urgently needed to develop new cable materials with independent intellectual property rights in our country. From the aspect of technical requirements, we review the research path and future development, research progress and path analysis of HVDC cable materials. Firstly, we discuss the technical requirements including dielectric strength, electric field distribution, and space charge transport. Then, we analyze the present situation, advantages and disadvantages, trap characteristics, and the development direction of cable materials including high purity cable materials, nanocomposite cable materials, blended composite cable materials, grafting cable materials, and shielding materials. Finally, we forecast the future development. The co-relationship between DC insulation characteristics is established using the charge trap theory. The effect of charge trap behavior on DC insulation characteristics is obtained. The trap characteristics and adjusting methods for various paths are summarized. This research can provide a theoretical support for the development of new DC cable materials.

Abstract:High voltage direct current (HVDC) extruded cable is one of the key power devices for realizing the flexible interconnection of large power grids,the power transmission with long distance and large capacity,and large-scale utilization of renewable energy.We review the progress of HVDC extruded cables from aspects including the development of insulating materials,accessory technologies,testing methodologies,cable measuring and detecting techniques as well as main projects worldwide.In particular,we analyze recent studies on DC conductivity and space charge properties of various insulation materials for DC cables,type and prequalification tests of DC cable systems as well as measurement methods of space charge and DC partial discharge on full-size cables.Moreover,we put forward urgent questions need to be solved in HVDC extruded cable technology,for instance,studying DC conductivity and space charge characteristics as well as long-term aging behavior and mechanism of existing insulation,developing new materials for higher voltage DC cables and accessories,optimizing the structural design of cable accessories,improving the space charge measurement and DC partial discharge detection technologies for full-size cables,and revising corresponding standards and regulations for HVDC extruded cable systems.Hopefully,the research will provide a reference for designing,manufacturing,testing,operating,and maintaining of HVDC extruded cables in China.

Abstract:This paper deals primarily with the ``solid'' type paper insulated high-tension cable, the development field still ahead being extensive. A review is given of the progress made during the past four years. The research and development work which made this progress possible is outlined, only the more important features being considered. Particular attention is given to void formation both in the factory and in the field, and methods of arriving at some understanding of this are demonstrated. The conclusion is drawn that void formation under service conditions is inherent in paper insulated ``solid'' cables. Methods of reducing the size and duration of voids, and increasing their pressure, thereby reducing the possibility of ionization deterioration, are carefully considered. Oil reservoir feed at the joints is of great value in this respect. This is dealt with in detail. Research data on ionization and other characteristics of finished cable and cable materials are presented.

Abstract:The interface pressure between cable accessory and cable insulation is the key to ensure the safety of cable accessory. Based on the interface pressure which determined the discharge characteristics of cable accessory, several influence factors of interface pressure were introduced, that is the roughness between cable accessory and cable insulation, temperature and the stress relaxation characteristics of cable accessory material. The long-term operational reliability of cable accessory can increase by increasing the interface smoothness, controlling the operation temperature rise of cable and selecting the accessory materi-al with relaxation resistance.

Abstract:High temperature resistance polyethylene cable material was prepared via blending epoxy into the XPE (polyethylene grafted silane) matrix by extruding. The effect on the properties of epoxy and the compatibility of the composites was studied. The results indicated that the addition of PE-g-MAH could obviously improve the compatibility between epoxy and PE so as to improve the mechanical properties of the cable material.
Influence of the characteristics of semiconducting materials in high frequency on electric-field distribution in cable accessory

Abstract:The cable accessory is the key to ensure the safety of transmission lines. Existing researches indicate that cable accessories always break down in the process of switching. Except the high-frequency transient overvoltage, the high frequency characteristics of the cable accessory are worthy to be paid more attention. In this paper, based on the measurements of the dielectric spectroscopy of insulating materials of ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM), silicone rubber (SIR), the cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) and their semiconducting materials in ranges from 1 MHz to 1 GHz, we simulated four models of the electric field distribution in cable accessory under 35kV DC voltage and AC voltage, and respectively superimposed transient voltage. The results show that the conductivity of insulating materials of EPDM, SIR and XLPE increases about two to three orders of magnitude with the increase of the frequency, while their permittivity hardly changes. However, the conductivity of semiconducting materials of the three increases and the permittivity decreases. Among the three semiconducting materials, the conductivity and permittivity of the outer semiconducting material of the XLPE cable vary more. The simulations show that the electric field strength at the interface between the cable and the cable accessory is above security threshold under high-frequency transient voltage. The electric field distribution in cable accessory is within the safety threshold when frequency is 1 MHz. However, the electric field strength at the interface between the cable and the cable accessory is 2.765 kV / mm and 5.613 kV / mm respectively when the frequency increases to 100 MHz and 1000 MHz, which may cause interface breakdown and seriously influence the reliability of the cable accessory.

Abstract:In order to develop Chinese self-own high voltage direct current (HVDC) cable insulation materials, three kinds of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) from Chinese petrochemical manufacturers were selected as the polymeric matrix. The conductivity and breakdown strength of the three kinds of polyethylene were tested at different temperatures to select the one with the best performance as the insulating base material. Then the modified nanoparticles were added to the LDPE and performed strong shear mixing in a twin-screw extruder to obtain a DC cable masterbatch with a mass fraction of 10%. Then the masterbatch was mixed with the base material in a ratio of 1:10, with adding a certain amount of additives to obtain Chinese DC cable material. The SEM observation of the cable material showed that the nanoparticles had good dispersibility. Test pieces made from the cable materials were then prepared for electrical performance tests, which showed that the performance of the Chinese material was better than that of the imported material. Model cables with an insulation thickness of 5.5mm were produced using Chinese and imported materials. However, the DC breakdown voltage test showed that the imported material was better than the Chinese materials. The results indicate that it is not enough to study the development of DC cable materials from the test piece level, but also needs to carry out more tests and studies at the cable level in combination with the actual production process.

Research on Properties of CB/EVA Semiconductive Shielding Composites

Abstract:In order to select suitable carbon black (CB) for manufacturing semiconductive shielding materials of XLPE insulated high voltage cable, the composites were prepared with the melt blending method by adding CB with different properties into ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA). The volume resistivity, mechanical property and rheological property of the composites were measured. The effects of the properties and content of CB on the various properties of the composites were investigated and their mechanism was analyzed. The research results show that both structure and specific surface area of CB have great effects on the volume resistivity and rheological property of the composites. Because high structure CB usually has high specific surface area, the high structure CB/EVA composites have low percolation threshold and low rheological property. The EVA composites containing low structure CB with larger specific surface area exhibit low conductivity and high melt viscosity. When the mass fraction of CB with low structure and small specific surface area reaches 35%, the volume resistivity of the composites is approximately 100 Ω·cm and the rheological property of the composites is obviously superior to the composites filled with high structure CB. The CB with small specific surface area and low structure as conductive filler is beneficial for good conductivity and extrusion processability of the semiconductive shielding materials.

Abstract:In recent years, the frequent occurrence of ablation faults in the buffer layers of high-voltage cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) cables has significantly undermined the stability of power grid operations. However, existing research cannot fully explain the failure mechanism and transformation of related physical and chemical properties of high-voltage cable buffer layer. To address this, the paper have constructed an integrated analysis framework that includes multiphysics field simulations, an equivalent electrical network model, and simulated ablation experiments to comprehensively reveal the complete ablation failure mechanisms. Firstly, this study conducted a comparative analysis of the voltage distribution and temperature changes in the buffer layer using electro-thermal coupling simulations and an equivalent electrical network model. This analysis provides a detailed study of the dynamic development process of buffer layer ablation and identifies key electrical parameters. Subsequently, it verified the accuracy of the simulations through experiments on temperature variation characteristics, changes in hydrogen content, and other gas concentrations by constructing a simulated buffer layer ablation experimental platform. Finally, based on the study of the mechanisms of the buffer layer ablation failure process, this study divided it into three stages: initial electrochemical corrosion, appearance of white powder, and the onset of ablation discharge in the buffer layer. The comparison of experimental results with simulation data from the first two stages further validated the effectiveness and robustness of our analysis framework. In summary, this study provides a comprehensive analysis of the failure process in high-voltage cable buffer layers through simulation and experimental validation. This study provides a methodological basis for preventing cable ablation faults and detecting and evaluating the status of high-voltage XLPE cable buffer layers.
Effect of Temperature on Electric-Thermal Properties of Semi-Conductive Shielding Layer and Insulation Layer for High-Voltage Cable

Abstract:A semi-conductive shielding layer plays an important role in the uniform electric field for a high-voltage cable. The electric-thermal properties of the semi-conductive layer and insulation layer directly affect the overall insulation performance of the cable. The physicochemical performances of semi-conductive composites are firstly analysed herein. Furthermore, electric-thermal properties of the semi-conductive layer and insulation layer are discussed. The experimental results show that the thermal conductivity of the commercial semi-conductive layer is about twice that of the insulation layer, owing to the effect of carbon black. The thermal expansion coefficient of the insulation layer rises from 1.86 x 10(-4)/K at 25 degrees C to 3.20 x 10(-4)/K at 90 degrees C. By contrast, the semi-conductive layer begins to slowly decline at a certain temperature, and decreases significantly to 2.25 x 10(-4)/K at 80 degrees C, owing to the effect of ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA). The electrical experiments show that the resistivity of semi-conductive composite gradually rises with an increase in temperature, and gradually declines with an increase in the carbon black content. The dc breakdown strength of the composite structure of the semi-conductive layer/insulation layer decreases significantly with an increase in temperature, decreasing from 307 kV/mm at 25 degrees C to 203 kV/mm at 90 degrees C. At four typical temperatures, the breakdown strength reaches the maximum value when the carbon black content is 25 phr. It is about 15% and 19% higher than carbon black contents of 20 and 30 phr. These findings have reference significance for high-voltage cable breakdown fault analysis and material selection in cable design.
