Abstract:H6P2W18O62/gamma-Al2O3 catalysts were prepared with different methods: (a) supercritical impregnation; (b) conventional wet impregnation. The obtained catalysts were characterized with XRD, SEM, N-2 adsorption, NH3-TPD, Pyridine-IR, TG, ICP, and CHNS analyses. The results showed that supercritical CO2 was helpful in enhancing the dispersity of H6P2W18O62 supported on gamma-Al2O3 and increased the surface area, pore volume and size, the total acid amount, and the proportion of Bronsted acid, and the formation of coke and the leaching of H6P2W18O62 were retarded. The main reason is because supercritical carbon dioxide has high solubility and diffusivity, which favors H6P2W18O62 dispersion and strengthens the interaction between H6P2W18O62 and hydroxyl on gamma-Al2O3. The performances of two catalysts in glycerol dehydration were evaluated. The conversion of glycerol, selectivity and yield of acrolein, and catalytic stability were significantly enhanced on the H6P2W18O62/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst prepared by supercritical impregnation because greater total acidity is conducive for improving the conversion of glycerol, while a higher ratio of Bronsted acid sites to total acidity is conducive for enhancing the acrolein selectivity.

Abstract:The H6P2W18O62/MCM-41-SUP was first synthesized using supercritical impregnation as highly efficient catalyst during glycerol conversion reaction. For comparison, the H6P2W18O62/MCM-41 prepared by conventional wet impregnation was also studied. The catalysts were studied using XRD, BET, FTIR, SEM, TEM, pyridine-FTIR, NH3-TPD, TG, ICP and elemental analysis. The characterization results showed that the preparation condition of supercritical carbon dioxide contributed to improve the dispersion of H6P2W18O62 on MCM-41, strengthen the interaction between H6P2W18O62 and MCM-41, increase the thermostability of H6P2W18O62 and enhance the amount of medium and Brønsted acid sites on the catalyst. Therefore, the formation of coke was retarded, and the lifetime of catalyst was prolonged. After 15 h reaction, the glycerol conversion rapidly reduced from 92% to 64% on H6P2W18O62/MCM-41-IMG (15.4 wt% coke), while the glycerol conversion slightly decreased from 94% to 82% on H6P2W18O62/MCM-41-SUP (9.8 wt% coke).

Abstract:The hydrogenolysis of glycerol to 1,3-propanediol has an important industrial value but remains a great challenge. Herein, a tungsten oxide hydrate (WO3 & BULL;H2O) containing Bronsted acid sites and surface oxygen vacancies was in situ grown on the surface of alumina. The coordination chemistry of WO3 on the carrier contributes to the extremely dispersed platinum and the excellent acidic property, and much more Pt-O-W interfaces are created. The synthetic Pt/H-WO3/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst exhibited much higher catalytic performance for glycerol hydrogenolysis than Pt/C- WO3/gamma-Al2O3, in which C-WO3/gamma-Al2O3 was routinely prepared by calcining the tungsten precursor (AMT) pre-impregnated on gamma-Al2O3. The success for this strategy lies in the pre-control toward the state of WO3 on the support, and several characterization techniques were performed to reveal the structure-property relationship.
Gas Phase Dehydration of Glycerol to Acrolein over Cs2.5H0.5PW12O40/Zr-MCM-41 Catalysts Prepared by Supercritical Impregnation

Abstract:The Cs2.5F10.5PW12O40/Zr-MCM-41 samples were synthesized by supercritical impregnation and investigated in gas phase dehydration of glycerol to acrolein. The Cs2.5F10.5PW12O40/Zr-MCM-41 sample prepared by conventional wet impregnation was also examined for comparison. The catalysts were studied using X-ray diffraction, N-2 adsorption, the temperature-programmed desorption of ammonia, infrared spectroscopy after pyridine adsorption, thermogravimetric analysis, P-31 MAS NMR, inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry and CHNS analysis. According to the results of characterization, the preparation condition of supercritical carbon dioxide facilitated the improvement of the Cs2.5F10.5PW12O40 dispersion on Zr-MCM-41. The specific surface area, pore volume and pore size were increased, and the total amount of surface acid sites and the ratio of Bronsted acid sites to total acidity were increased. The strong acid sites were transformed into the weak and medium acid sites. The formation of coke was retarded. Therefore, the glycerol conversion, acrolein selectivity and yield, and the catalytic stability were obviously improved.
Microwave-assisted Catalytic Dehydration of Glycerol for Sustainable Production of Acrolein over a Microwave Absorbing Catalyst

Abstract:Uniform temperature distribution within solid catalyst particles is important to achieving low coke formation in a high-temperature reaction. However, the issue of uneven temperature distribution exists in most fixed-bed catalytic reaction systems. Here, we developed a microwave-assisted system and used it in catalytic dehydration of glycerol for sustainable production of acrolein. A coated microwave absorbing catalyst WO3/ZrO2@SiC was prepared and employed in the catalytic reactions. The effects of reaction temperature, ZrO2/SiC ratio, and weight hourly space velocity (WHSV) on glycerol conversion and arcolein selectivity were examined. Experimental results showed that the microwave heating proved to be more effective than the conventional electric heating for glycerol dehydration to acrolein at lower temperature. The acrolein selectivity reached over 70% with complete glycerol conversion at 250 degrees C by microwave heating. The catalyst acidity was greatly influenced by ZrO2/SiC ratio, which in turn determined the acrolein selectivity. More importantly, much better catalyst stability was obtained in the microwave-heating process than the electric-heating process. In addition, the microwave-heating system was effective for the in-situ regeneration of deactivated catalyst.
Promoting Role of Oxygen Deficiency on a WO3-Supported Pt Catalyst for Glycerol Hydrogenolysis to 1,3-Propanediol

Abstract:The supported Pt and WOx catalysts are widely studied for the hydrogenolysis of glycerol to 1,3-propanediol. Nevertheless, the promoting role of W species remains unclear owing to the complexity in ternary hybrid catalysts. Herein, tungsten oxides (WO3 .0.33H(2)O) with the varying quantities of oxygen vacancy (V-o) were successfully synthesized and directly used as a support for loading Pt. The platinum loading high oxygen vacancies (H-WO3) containing V-o in abundance showed much higher catalytic activity and selectivity than that for low oxygen vacancies (L-WO3). The uniform dispersion of Pt particles, the high acidity, and the strong Pt and support interaction observed on Pt/H-WO3 are associated with the existence of V-o in a large amount, resulting in the significant enhancement in the catalytic performance. A plausible model for glycerol hydrogenolysis on Pt/ H-WO3 was proposed, wherein the unsaturated W ions coordinate with two terminal -OH groups of a glycerol molecule, and the secondary -OH group was protonated by the B acid from the Pt-(WOx)(n)-H as well as the in situ generated H delta+ species.

Abstract:Gas phase dehydration of glycerol to acrolein was studied using the Wells–Dawson and Keggin type phosphotungstic acids supported on MCM-41 catalysts. The samples were characterized using XRD, FTIR, pyridine-FTIR, UV–Vis, N2 adsorption, NH3-TPD, ICP, SEM and elemental analysis. FT-IR and UV–Vis spectra results confirmed the presence of Wells–Dawson and Keggin type phosphotungstic acids on the support. XRD results suggested that the active phases were highly dispersed on MCM-41. N2 adsorption results showed that the mesoporous structure of MCM-41 was retained after loading of phosphotungstic acids. H3PW12O40/MCM-41 showed higher total acid sites than H6P2W18O62/MCM-41, but the number of Brønsted acid sites on H6P2W18O62/MCM-41 was higher than that of H3PW12O40/MCM-41. Glycerol conversion increased with the total amount of acid sites. The acid type also influenced catalytic performance. The selectivity to acrolein increased with increasing the ratio of Brønsted and Lewis acid, and lower value of Brønsted/Lewis acid favored the production of hydroxyacetone. H6P2W18O62/MCM-41 owned more Brønsted acid sites, the dehydration reaction was more likely to occur via the Brønsted acid sites dehydration route, thus generating more acrolein and formaldehyde. Meanwhile, H3PW12O40/MCM-41 exhibited more Lewis acid sites, the dehydration reaction was more likely proceeding via the Lewis acid sites dehydration route and generating more hydroxyacetone and acetaldehyde. Furthermore, we concluded that the reasons for decrease of catalytic performance in glycerol conversion were leaching of HPW and coke deposition.

Abstract:Pt-WOx-based catalyst has been considered as a promising candidate for the conversion of glycerol to 1,3-propanediol, but the catalytic performance was quite susceptible to the structure and chemical state of WOx species. Herein, we develop a facile approach to construct the single-atom tungsten-doped Al2O3 with a low chemical state through in-situ migration of WO3 nanoparticles under the H2 atmosphere. The characterization results demonstrated that the tetrahedral W5+ could disperse and stabilize the platinum species more effectively, and exhibited stronger interaction with platinum than the octahedral W6+ species. The enhanced catalytic performance is attributed to the rich oxygen defects on in-situ generated tetrahedral WOx on the catalyst, which facilitated the construction of Pt-WOx interface and strengthened the synergetic effects between them. The analysis of structure-performance correlation revealed that the mono-dispersed tetrahedral W5+ species [(-O-)3W (=O)] played a pivotal role in tuning catalyst acidity and improving the catalytic performance, which assists the adsorption of glycerol and captures H for in-situ formation of Bronsted acid site, and ultimately affected the selectivity toward 1,3-PDO and catalytic activity.

Abstract:Biomass glycerol is an important raw material for many available chemicals, such as 1,2-propanediol (1,2-PDO). Hydrogenolysis of glycerol to 1,2-PDO is considered as a sustainable process with renewable potential application. In this paper, a series of bimetallic PdCu-KF/γ-Al2O3 were prepared and the structures of catalysts were characterized by XRD, XPS, TEM and CO2-TPD. By measuring the activity of the catalyst, we found that PdCu-KF/γ-Al2O3 (Pd:Cu:KF=0.05:1:0.5) can be used as an efficient catalyst for hydrogenolysis of glycerol to 1,2-PDO, with 98.3% selectivity and nearly 100% conversion (200°C, 2.5MPa initial H2 pressure, 20h).

Abstract:Catalytic dehydration of glycerol over solid catalysts provides a sustainable and economic route to producing acrolein. Unsupported MoP catalyst was prepared by temperature-programmed-reduction method and used for the gas-phase glycerol dehydration. The catalyst was characterized by means of XRD, SEM, TEM, NH3-TPD, Py-IR, XPS, TG-DSC, and N2 adsorption-desorption. It is indicated that the acidic P-OH and Mo-OH groups, which are usually associated with the weak or moderate strength of Brønsted acid sites, were presented on the surface of MoP. The effects of reaction temperature and carrier gas flow rate on glycerol conversion and acrolein selectivity were investigated over MoP. The selectivity to acrolein was up to 89.0% and kept constant in a 50-h run at 240 °C. The gradual decrease of glycerol conversion might be related to the insoluble carbonaceous materials deposited on the catalyst surface.

Abstract:Hydrogen production by supercritical water gasification (SCWG) is a promising technology for wet biomass utilization. Ni catalyst can realize the high gasification efficiency of biomass near the critical temperature of water. In this paper, Ni/gamma Al2O3 and Ni/CeO2-gamma Al2O3 catalysts were prepared by an impregnation method. The catalyst performance for glucose gasification in supercritical water was tested in autoclave reactor. All experiments were carried out in the autoclave at 673 K, 24.5 MPa, and the concentration of glucose was 9.09 wt.%. The catalysts before and after reaction were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), BET specific surface area measurements, X-ray fluorescence spectrum (XRF) and Thermo-gravimetric analyses (TGA) in order to investigate on the chemical property and catalytic mechanism. The experimental results showed that hydrogen yield and hydrogen selectivity increased sharply with addition of Ni/gamma Al2O3 and Ni/CeO2-gamma Al2O3 catalysts. The catalytic activity and H-2 selectivity of Ni/CeO2-gamma Al2O3 was higher than that of Ni/gamma Al2O3 catalyst. The results revealed that carbon deposition and coking led to the deactivation of the catalysts. Dehydration of Castor Oil over H6P2W18O62@MCM-41

Abstract:The H6P2W18O62@MCM-41 catalyst (C-1) modified by dodecyltrimethoxysilane (DTMS) showed excellent catalytic performance during the dehydration of castor oil to produce dehydrated castor oil (DCO). The castor oil conversion and the DCO selectivity on H6P2W18O62-DTMS@Zr-MCM-41 (C-2) are higher than those of C-1. The dispersity of H6P2W18O62 is remarkably improved by an appropriate amount of DTMS modification on the C-2 because of the steric effect between the DTMS and H6P2W18O62. Therefore, the total acidic amount of C-2 is more than that of C-1, but the acidic intensity is weaker than that of C-1. The more total amount of acidity is good for improving the castor oil conversion, and the weaker acid strength leads to less carbon deposition. The amount of Brønsted acid sites is higher than that of C-1. However, the amount of Lewis acid sites is less than that of C-1, so the ration of B/(B + L) is higher than that of C-1, which is good for improving the DCO selectivity. The C-2 catalyst has proper hydrophobicity by grafting the silane group of DTMS on the surface of MCM-41, which can suppress the leaching of H6P2W18O62, because the water produced in reaction is not easily adsorbed on the surface of the catalyst. Proper lipophilicity is conducive to the absorption of castor oil to the surface of the catalyst, which can accelerate the reaction. The stability of C-2 is obviously higher than that of C-1, because the coke deposited and W elemental leaching on C-1 are more serious than those of C-2. Under the optimized reaction conditions: 220 °C, 2.8 wt% amount of C-2, H6P2W18O62 loading of 12 wt%, DTMS loading of 3.5 wt%, the iodine and hydroxyl value of product are 148.6 and 8.9, respectively.
Ethanol Dehydration to Ethylene over High-Energy Facets Exposed Gamma Alumina

Abstract:Highly efficient and stable catalysts are among the key factors in industrial ethanol dehydration to ethylene. Among the widely studied catalysts, alumina is the most suitable for industrial application. In this study, novel gamma alumina was synthesized by solvent protection and a hydrothermal procedure. HRTEM, XRD, FT-IR, NH3-TPD, H-D exchange, and 29Si MAS NMR were employed to compare the difference in physicochemical properties between the novel gamma alumina and commercial alumina. Characterization results show that the as-synthesized novel gamma alumina mainly exposes the high-energy crystal plane (111) while the commercial alumina mainly exposes the thermostatically stable (110) crystal plane. The dominating (111) plane, according to the characterizations, endows the novel gamma alumina with a higher density of surface hydroxyl groups, higher acid content, and higher surface energy compared to the commercial alumina. The catalytic performance of the two catalysts for industrial ethanol dehydration to ethylene was studied. The novel (111) plane-exposed alumina showed a higher yield of ethylene than commercial alumina under the same reaction conditions. This could be related to the difference in atomic arrangement and the unsaturated aluminum coordination of different crystal planes. Stability testing under severe reaction conditions (450 °C, 1 MPa, 4 h−1) indicates that novel gamma alumina shows better stability (catalyst life cycle increased by 50%) and produces less acetaldehyde as a byproduct. The effects of steam treatment on the catalytic performance were further investigated. The surface acidity and the catalytic performance of novel gamma alumina present a volcanic curve with the increase in steam treatment temperature. Under the optimal water vapor treatment temperature of 650 °C, the conversion of ethanol and selectivity of ethylene were both higher than 99%.

Selective Hydrogenolysis of Glycerol to Propylene Glycol on MgO-Al2O3 Dispersed Cu Catalysts

Abstract:Cu/MgO-Al2O3 (Mg/Al atomic ratio=1/1, 3/1, 4/1), Cu/MgO and Cu/Al2O3 catalysts with high Cu dispersions were prepared by an impregnation method using ethanol as solvent instead of water. Compared to water, ethanol as solvent was favorable not only for obtaining the high dispersions of the Cu clusters on the basic oxide supports, but also for retaining the basicity and structures of the supports during the catalyst preparation. The density of the basic sites for the dispersed Cu catalysts increased with increasing the MgO contents in the basic supports. These catalysts catalyzed glycerol hydrogenolysis to propylene glycol with a high selectivity (>90%), and showed slight deactivation in dioxane at 200 degrees C and 6.0 MPa H-2. Their reaction rates normalized by per exposed Cu atom increased with increasing the ratios of the basic sites to Cu atoms on the catalyst surfaces. The intrinsic hydrogenolysis activity of the Cu atoms were probed by N2O chemisorption-H-2 temperature programmed reduction, which did not change essentially with the Cu loadings (2-6 wt%) and the Mg/Al atomic ratios of the MgO-Al2O3 supports. Meanwhile, the basic sites alone on the supports were inactive for the glycerol conversion. Taken together, we propose a synergetic effect that the basic sites at the interfaces between the Cu sites and the supports assist the cleavage of alpha-C-H bonds of glycerol on the Cu surfaces leading to the faster dehydrogenation of glycerol to glyceraldehyde, a kinetically-relevant step in glycerol hydrogenolysis to propylene glycol. These active basic sites appear to be the Bronsted OH- sites, i.e. the hydroxyl groups bonded to the surface Mg2+ cations on MgO-Al2O3. The understanding on such synergy between the basic sites and Cu sites in glycerol hydrogenolysis provides a basis for the rational design of superior hydrogenolysis catalysts and selective removal of oxygen from biomass-derived feedstocks.

Abstract:Al2O3as the carrier,Cu,Co,Ni,Pt/Al2O3four kinds of single component catalysts(M/Al2O3) were prepared by impregnation method.The catalyst applicability and reaction behavior of hydrogen production via the steam reforming of glycerin with respect to the M/Al2O3catalysts have been studied.The preparation conditions and reduction conditions of M/Al2O3 catalysts were investigated,and catalysts were assessed through activity,stability and the resistance to carbon deposition.Catalysts were characterized by TPR and XRD.Studies have found that M/Al2O3catalysts showed some activity for the steam reforming of glycerin;wherein the Cu/Al2O3 catalyst has certain resistance to carbon deposition;Pt/Al2O3 catalyst showed better resistance to carbon deposition,high temperature activity,but poor stability;Co/Al2O3 catalyst exhibited good stability;Ni/Al2O3 catalyst exhibited good activity at low temperature.
Hydrogenolysis of glycerol over homogenously dispersed copper on solid base catalysts

Abstract:Homogenously dispersed copper on layered solid base (Cu0.4/Mg5.6Al2O8.6-CP, with 80.1% dispersion of copper) was synthesized via thermal decomposition of the as-synthesized Cu0.4Mg5.6Al2(OH)16CO3 layered double hydroxides. This bi-functional highly dispersed Cu-solid base catalyst is extremely effective for hydrogenolysis of aqueous glycerol. The detected conversion of glycerol reached 80.0% with a 98.2% selectivity of 1,2-propanediol at 180°C, 3.0MPa H2 and 20h. But copper dispersed poorly in those catalysts prepared via impregnation and ion-exchange, and their activities were lower. These precursors and catalysts were characterized by N2-adsorption, X-ray diffraction, scanning electronic microscope, transmission electronic microscope, thermo-gravimetry, temperature-programmed reduction with H2, in-situ XRD, dissociative N2O adsorption and CO2 temperature-programmed desorption. It was confirmed that the as-synthesized Cu0.4Mg5.6Al2(OH)16CO3 showed a well crystallized layer-structure of hydrotalcite and copper dispersed homogenously on the layer-structure of hydrotalcite after thermal decomposition and H2 reduction.

Abstract:WVO x bi-metal oxides supported on the cost-effective industrial mesoprous Al 2 O 3 , SiO 2 , active carbon (AC), and TiO 2 –Al 2 O 3 with different specific surface areas (WVO/Al 2 O 3 , WVO/SiO 2 , WVO/AC, and WVO/TiO 2 –Al 2 O 3 ) were designed and prepared through co-impregnation method for large-scale bio-glycerol dehydration to acrolein. The XRD, BET, SEM–EDS, XPS, and NH 3 -TPD characterization results revealed the WO 3 –VO x (V 4+ /V 5+ ) species existed with better dispersion, lower molar ratio of V 4+ /V 5+ , and enhanced strength of surface acid sites on the developed mesoporous TiO 2 –Al 2 O 3 in comparison with that on the mesoporous Al 2 O 3 , SiO 2 , and AC, demonstrating strong interaction of WO 3 –VO x species with the TiO 2 –Al 2 O 3 support and accounting for the acrolein selectivity over catalysts following the order of WVO/TiO 2 –Al 2 O 3 (75.8%) > WVO/AC (71.2%) > WVO/SiO 2 (55.3%) > WVO/Al 2 O 3 (42.8%). Over the WVO/TiO 2 –Al 2 O 3 , gas-glycerol conversion reached above 97.0% with acrolein selectivity of about 75.0% under the gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) of 120–360 h −1 , and maintained an improved catalytic stability.

Abstract:Dimethyl ether has gained great attention by Indonesian Government since it will be used for the substitution for liquid petroleum gas. This work was aimed to study the effect of phosphorus addition on γ-Al2O3 catalyst for methanol dehydration to DME synthesis. The catalysts were prepared using sonication-assisted impregnation. The modified catalysts were characterized (XRD, BET, and NH3-TPR analysis), and their activity was tested in bench scale reactor. The results showed that the 5%P/γ-Al2O3 catalyst had medium acidity which was good for dehydration of methanol to DME. The surface area, pore volume, and pore diameter were measured as 132 m2/g, 0.42 mL/g, and 127 Å, respectively. The activity test was carried out at 240–280 °C, atmospheric pressure, and GHSV 2,142 h−1. The 5%P/γ-Al2O3 catalyst exhibited good performances at a temperature of 240 °C with 42% of methanol conversion, 18% of yield of DME, and 75% of selectivity of DME. Methanol dehydration using modified 5% P/γ-Al2O3 did not produce H2 by-products and other compounds which were produced during methanol dehydration with unmodified γ-Al2O3.
