Abstract:Optical gyroscopes are among the most accurate rotation measuring devices and are widely used for navigation and accurate pointing. Since the advent of photonic integrated components for communications, and with their increasing complexity, there has been interest in the possibility of chip-scale optical gyroscopes<sup><a href="/articles/s41566-020-0588-y#ref-CR1">1</a></sup>. Besides the potential benefits of integration, such solid-state systems would be robust and resistant to shock. Here, we report a gyroscope using Brillouin ring lasers on a silicon chip. Its stability and sensitivity enable measurement of Earth's rotation, representing a major milestone for this new class of gyroscope.

Abstract:A new flexible circumferential drilling system is proposed to drill on the fuselage docking area. To analyze the influence of the circular motion error to the drilling accuracy, the nominal forward kinematic model is derived using Denavit-Hartenberg (D-H) method and this model is further developed to model the kinematic errors caused by circular positioning error and synchronization error using homogeneous transformation matrices (HTM). A laser tracker is utilized to measure the circular motion error of the two measurement points at both sides. A circular motion compensation experiment is implemented according to the calculated positioning error and synchronization error. Experimental results show that the positioning error and synchronization error were reduced by 65.0% and 58.8%, respectively, due to the adopted compensation, and therefore the circular motion accuracy is substantially improved. Finally, position errors of the two measurement points are analyzed to have little influence on the measurement result and the validity of the proposed compensation method is proved.

Abstract:Scientific instruments and facilities used for calibrating the dynamic angle error of inertial instruments have played more and more important roles in mechanism error research and accuracy improvement. Present attitude measurement methods can not simultaneously meet the requirements of the inertial instrument angle error calibration in dynamic environments such as linear or angular vibration. Based on the collaborative integration and modeling calculation of single-point laser Doppler vibrometer, this paper proposes a dynamic attitude measurement system that can completely realize non-contact real-time accurate three-dimensional rotation angle measurement, filling in the blank of non-contact dynamic angle error calibration of inertial instrument. Besides, we propose a distance calibration method to reduce the angle measurement error from 0.34 degrees to 0.0072 degrees, which fully satisfies the non-contact measurement requirements of the inertial instrument.

Abstract:Inspired by the success of semiconductor-chip-based MEMs rotation sensors, there has long been interest in the possible realization of chip-based optical gyroscopes. Such devices could potentially be lightweight and rugged, while featuring some of the sensitivity advantages of Sagnac-based sensing devices. However, the performance of integrated-optical gyroscopes has lagged behind MEMS devices on account of difficult-to-achieve requirements for low-optical-loss chip-based waveguides and optical resonators. Here, a chip-based ring laser gyroscope is described. Its sensitivity is high enough to measure the Earth's rotation. The physical principles of its operation and its current performance will be reviewed.

Abstract:Differential rotation of Earth’s inner core relative to the mantle is thought to occur under the effects of the geodynamo on core dynamics and gravitational core–mantle coupling. This rotation has been inferred from temporal changes between repeated seismic waves that should traverse the same path through the inner core. Here we analyse repeated seismic waves from the early 1990s and show that all of the paths that previously showed significant temporal changes have exhibited little change over the past decade. This globally consistent pattern suggests that differential inner-core rotation has recently paused. We compared this recent pattern to the Alaskan seismic records of South Sandwich Islands doublets going back to 1964 and it seems to be associated with a gradual turning-back of the inner core relative to the mantle as a part of an approximately seven-decade oscillation, with another turning point in the early 1970s. This multidecadal periodicity coincides with changes in several other geophysical observations, especially the length of day and magnetic field. These observations provide evidence for dynamic interactions between the Earth’s layers, from the deepest interior to the surface, potentially due to gravitational coupling and the exchange of angular momentum from the core and mantle to the surface.

Abstract:Large-scale laser gyroscopes with sufficiently high sensitivity for measurement of the rotation rate of the Earth Ω E are inertial sensors with the capability to provide Earth orientation parameters, i.e., rotation rate and polar motion in near real time. Larger-scale passive resonant gyroscopes (PRGs) theoretically have a lower shot-noise limit. However, the cavity perimeter fluctuations and laser frequency noise become challenges in a passive gyro. In this paper, we introduce a three-wave differential locking scheme for large-scale PRGs, resulting in an in situ measurement of the cavity perimeter with nanometer resolution. Furthermore, the laser frequency noise is effectively suppressed with an additional gain of 30 dB by a double-stage locking system, based on the three-wave differential locking scheme. Finally, the rotation rate resolution of our 3m×3m gyroscope improves to 1.1×10-9 r a d/s over 200 s. The simplicity, robustness, and effectiveness of the locking scheme are important to the long-term operation of large-scale PRGs aiming for applications in the geosciences.
Identification and correction of Sagnac frequency variations: an implementation for the GINGERINO data analysis

Abstract:Abstract Ring laser gyroscopes are top sensitivity inertial sensors used in the measurement of angular rotation. It is well known that the response of such remarkable instruments can in principle access the very low frequency band, but the occurrence of nonlinear effects in the laser dynamics imposes severe limitations in terms of sensitivity and stability. We report here general relationships aimed at evaluating corrections able to effectively account for nonlinear laser dynamics. The so-derived corrections are applied to analyse thirty days of continuous operation of the large area ring laser gyroscope GINGERINO leading to duly reconstruct the Sagnac frequency $$\omega _s$$ ω s . The analysis shows that the evaluated corrections affect the measurement of the Earth rotation rate $$\varOmega _{\oplus }$$ Ω ⊕ at the level of 1 part in $$1.5\times 10^{3}$$ 1.5 × 10 3 . The null shift term $$\omega _{ns}$$ ω ns plays a non negligible role. It turns out proportional to the optical losses $$\mu $$ μ of the ring cavity, which are changing in time at the level of $$10\%$$ 10 % within the considered period of thirty days. The Allan deviation of estimated $$\varOmega _{\oplus }$$ Ω ⊕ shows a remarkable long term stability, leading to a sensitivity better than $$10^{-10}$$ 10 - 10 rad/s with more than 10 s of integration time, and approaching $$(8.5\pm 0.5)\times 10^{-12}$$ ( 8.5 ± 0.5 ) × 10 - 12 rad/s with $$4.5\times 10^{5}$$ 4.5 × 10 5 s of integration time.

Abstract:Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) applications require computation of the geometric range between the satellite vehicle at the time-of-signal transmission and the receiver antenna location at the time-of-signal reception. This computation requires attention to the frames of reference due to the rotation of the Earth-Centered Earth-Fixed (ECEF) frame during the time-of-signal propagation. Three range computation approaches are commonplace and will be discussed herein. The first is the Global Positioning System Interface Control Document recommendation to rotate the ECEF frames to a common reference time. The other two are forms of the Sagnac correction. The Sagnac derivations already in the literature are either limited to stationary receivers or lack the connection between the Earth-centered inertial (ECI) and ECEF frames. Neither form of the Sagnac correction exactly reproduces the geometric range. They are approximations. The literature does not currently contain an analysis of the error involved in using either form of the Sagnac correction. This article makes two contributions: (1) it presents derivations for both forms of the Sagnac correction that are valid for moving receivers and that maintain the connection between the ECI and ECEF frames; and (2) it analyzes the error of the Sagnac correction for orbits of different radius. The analysis shows that Sagnac corrections introduce range errors less than meters for GNSS satellites at medium Earth orbit.
