Abstract:Using a fiber network as a huge sensing system will enrich monitoring methods of public infrastructures and geological disasters. With the traditional cross-correlation method, a laser interferometer has been used to detect and localize the vibration event. However, the random error induced by the cross-correlation method limits the localization accuracy and makes it not suitable for ultrahigh precision localizing applications. We propose a novel time shifting deviation (TSDEV) method, which has advantages over the cross-correlation method in practicability and localization accuracy. Three experiments are carried out to demonstrate the novelty of the TSDEV method. In a lab test, vibration localization accuracy of ～2.5 m is realized. In field tests, TSDEV method enhanced interferometry is applied to monitor the urban fiber link. Traffic vibration events on the campus road and Beijing ring road have been precisely localized and analyzed, respectively. The proposed technique will extend the function of the existing urban fiber network, and better serve the future smart city.

Abstract:Ultrashort laser pulse has been widely used in various applications. Its parameters, such as the pulse duration and the spectral bandwidth, should be controlled accurately in order to achieve high spatial and temporal resolution, as well as high local field intensity. In this paper, we have proposed a method to trace the propagation of ultrashort pulses through optical systems, especially the complex optics. The approach, in which both the material's dispersion and optical aberrations are taken into consideration, is developed based on the geometrical ray-tracing combined with wave theories. This method is validated by simulating the propagation of a femtosecond pulse through a specific practical imaging system. As the numerical result shows that the spatial-temporal performances of pulses are influenced greatly by optical elements, the calibration arrangement is employed to compensate for those undesired distortions. The negative dispersion of the optical grisms (the combination of gratings and prisms) is utilized in the calibration process to offset the positive dispersion introduced by lenses. The final result shows effectiveness of the correction.

Abstract:Spectrally resolved interferometry utilizing a femtosecond laser is widely employed for absolute distance measurement. However, deviations in the output time pulse of the conventional algorithm through inverse Fourier transform are inevitable. Herein, an improved data processing algorithm employing a time-shifting parameter is proposed to improve the accuracy of spectrally resolved interferometry. The principle of the proposed time-shifting algorithm is analyzed theoretically after clarifying the deviation source of the conventional algorithm. Simulation and experimental work were conducted to indicate the improvement in the accuracy of the output absolute distance. The results demonstrated that the proposed algorithm could reduce the deviation of output distances towards the reference values, reaching 0.58 μm by half compared to the conventional algorithm. Furthermore, the measurement uncertainty was evaluated using the Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement (GUM), resulting in an expanded uncertainty of 0.71 μm with a 95% confidence.

Abstract:Frequency-scanning interferometry is a very useful absolute distance and areal surface profile measurement technique as it generates absolute optical path difference without any mechanical scanning. It is thus critical to select an appropriate algorithm to precisely and rapidly acquire the phase with respect of the wavenumber and optical path difference of the interference fringe. In this paper we analyze and demonstrate in detail the processing speed and accuracy of current optical path difference calculation algorithms. It is pointed out that the algorithm based on Fourier transform - inverse Fourier transform has the highest performance in terms of calculation time and overall noise insensitivity, while the phase shifting algorithm has the highest calculation accuracy when noise level is low.
