Abstract:The modeling of stator and rotor faults is the basis of the development of online monitoring techniques. To obtain reliable stator and rotor fault models, this paper focuses on dynamic modeling of the stator and rotor faults in real-time, which adopts a multiple-coupled-circuit method by using a winding function approach for inductance calculation. Firstly, the model of the induction machine with a healthy cage is introduced, where a rotor mesh that consists of a few rotor loops and an end ring loop is considered. Then, the stator inter-turn fault model is presented by adding an extra branch with short circuit resistance on the fault part of a stator phase winding. The broken rotor bar fault is then detailed by merging and removing the broken-bar-related loops. Finally, the discrete models under healthy and faulty conditions are developed by using the Tustin transformation for digital implementation. Moreover, the stator and rotor mutual inductances are derived as a function of the rotor position according to the turn and winding functions distribution. Simulations and experiments are performed on a 2.2-kW/380-V/50-Hz three-phase and four-pole induction motor to show the performance of the stator and rotor faults, where the saturation effect is considered in simulations by exploiting the measurements of a no load test. The simulation results are in close agreement with the experimental results. Furthermore, magnitudes of the characteristic frequencies of 2f1 in torque and (1 ± 2s)f1 in current are analyzed to evaluate the stator and rotor fault severity. Both indicate that the stator fault severity is related to the short circuit resistance. Further, the number of shorted turns and the number of continuous broken bars determines the rotor fault severity.

Abstract:In an induction motor with broken rotor bars, stator currents contain fault-related components. The fault information propagates to voltages when the motor is in a closed-loop control. The control has an effect on the currents and voltages. Relying solely on the currents or voltages is difficult to obtain an accurate detection and quantification of the fault. A new online diagnosis method, which takes both currents and voltages into consideration, is proposed in this study. A fault severity factor is proposed to evaluate the extension of the fault, which is almost independent of the control parameters. Furthermore, the method can be applied to different control strategies. The effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method have been validated by experimental results.

Abstract:This paper proposes a new method to diagnosis rotor faults in rotor field oriented controlled (RFOC) induction motors (IMs). It is theoretically proved that the ratio between the amplitude of the oscillating component and the average of torque current in the d-q reference frame allows detection and quantification of the extension of the fault. Motor parameters are not needed except for the number of rotor bars. At the same time, the reference speed and the load level do not significantly affect the diagnosis results. The effectiveness of the scheme has been validated by simulation results.

Abstract:A new rotor fault diagnosis method for induction motors based on the double PQ(active power P and reactive power Q) transformation was presented in order to avoid the influence of frequency error.The PQ transformation matrix was constructed by the terminal voltages of induction motor,and the terminal currents were transformed to PQ plane,accordingly the rotor broken bar faults were taken out reliably,and the influence of supply frequency fluctuation could be avoided.The proposed method overcomes the methodological shortages based on analysis of the stator current spectrum,and solves the difficult of Park vector method to recognize graphics.A new fault severity index independent of load level and mechanical inertia was given,and then a method to reliably discriminate between rotor faults and load fluctuation was presented.Experimental results demonstrated the validity of the proposed method.

Abstract:Electric motors have revolutionized the way of human living and resulted in the modern lifestyle. These motors often operate in corrosive and dusty places and are exposed to a variety of undesirable conditions and situations that result in the failure of the motor. The faults occurring in Induction Motors (IM) need to be detected at a proper time for avoiding losses and further consequences. A well-designed fault detection scheme not only reduces motor failure but also increases productivity and even sometimes avoids accidents. This paper presents a review of fault detection and classification techniques in three-phase induction motors (TPIM). The main theme of this paper is to revisit the conventional methods for fault detection in TPIM and compare them with recently published methods based on parameters to be sensed, and the type of fault that can be detected, with their advantages and drawbacks. Around a hundred papers are critically reviewed and studied from old and new regimes. Attention is also given to fault detection methods based on artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). This paper concludes with brief remarks which will be very useful for new researchers who are willing to research in the domain of fault detection and classification.

Abstract:This paper proposes a new current based diagnosis method, which is the so called current product signal analysis method (CPSA), for rotor fault diagnosis in induction motors. The major theoretical principles of CPSA are presented in this paper and it is shown that rotor faults can be effectively detected. Extensive simulation and experimental results confirm the effectiveness and merits of the proposed diagnosis approach, especially when the motor is at very low slip.

Abstract:This paper concerns following two issues that are critical to the reliable diagnosis of rotor faults of induction motors. The first is to define a fault severity index that is independent of load level and mechanical inertia; and the second is how to discriminate between rotor faults and periodic load fluctuation. Based on the detailed analysis of the relationships between current sideband components at frequencies (1±2s)fs (s is slip and fs is supply frequency) due to rotor faults or load fluctuation, a new fault severity index that is independent of load level and mechanical inertia is given, and then a method to reliably discriminate between rotor faults and load fluctuation is presented. Experimental results from a 4 kW induction motor demonstrate the validity of the proposed method.

Abstract:Multiphase motors commonly adopt concentrated windings and non-sinusoidal sources in order to improve the flux distribution as well as torque density.A strategy for fault tolerant control under phase-open fault is proposed due to the characteristics of multiphase motor.Taking a 9-phase induction motor for example,the equations of currents for the remaining phases were derived,which is based on the principle that the stator magnetic motive force(MMF) is kept unchanged after the fault occurrence.The remaining phase currents commands were solved when the copper losses were minimized by neglecting the 7th harmonics of stator MMF,only keeping 1st,3rd,5th harmonics unchanged.Proportional resonant control strategy was adopted in the current loop,to achieve zero ac current error in the stationary frame.In the end,experimental results shows improved torque density and smoothed torque ripple,which validates the proposed strategy.

Abstract:This paper deals with fault-tolerant control of five-phase induction motor (IM) drives under single-phase open. By exploiting a decoupled model for five-phase IM under fault, the indirect field-oriented control ensures that electromagnetic torque oscillations are reduced by particular magnitude ratio currents. The control techniques are developed by the third harmonic current injection, in order to improve electromagnetic torque density. Furthermore, Proportional Resonant (PR) regulator is adopted to realize excellent current tracking performance in the phase frame, compared with Proportional Integral (PI) and hysteresis regulators. The analysis and experimental results confirm the validity of fault-tolerant control under single-phase open.

Abstract:Induction motors are very robust, with low operating and maintenance costs, and are therefore widely used in industry. They are, however, not fault-free, with bearings and rotor bars accounting for about 50% of the total failures. This work presents a two-stage approach for three-phase induction motors diagnosis based on mutual information measures of the current signals, principal component analysis, and intelligent systems. In a first stage, the fault is identified, and, in a second stage, the severity of the defect is diagnosed. A case study is presented where different severities of bearing wear and bar breakage are analyzed. To test the robustness of the proposed method, voltage imbalances and load torque variations are considered. The results reveal the promising performance of the proposal with overall accuracies above 90% in all cases, and in many scenarios 100% of the cases are correctly classified. This work also evaluates different strategies for extracting the signals, showing the possibility of reducing the amount of information needed. Results show a satisfactory relation between efficiency and computational cost, with decreases in accuracy of less than 4% but reducing the amount of data by more than 90%, facilitating the efficient use of this method in embedded systems.

Abstract:This article proposes an improved fault diagnosis strategy to enhance the diagnosis accuracy for the induction motor under the slight fault situation. The additional even and triple harmonics, caused by the faulty asymmetric structure, are taken into account. As a result, the stator current faulty characteristic frequency components, caused by faults from the stator side, the rotor side and the air-gap side, are enlarged. The Hilbert transform and the support vector machine (SVM) multiclassification method are applied to improve the sensitivity of fault identification. To increase the diagnosis accuracy and speediness in different applications, the grid search method, the genetic algorithm and the particle swarm algorithm are employed for the parameter optimization of the SVM classification prediction model. Finally, compared with the traditional strategy, the diagnosis accuracy can be increased by 6%–10% based on the proposed strategy. Comprehensive simulation and experimental results have fully verified the proposed diagnosis method in this article.

Abstract:A modeling and simulation study is presented to investigate the behavior of a squirrel cage induction motor under rotor internal faults. In this paper, a simple approach for modeling of induction machines under rotor internal faults (broken bar and broken end ring) is developed. This model is represented as a system of differential equations. The actual rotor structure is taken into account in this model. And a d-q model is used to describe the 3-phase symmetrical winding stator instead of phase model. Rotor fault is considered by a so-called connectivity matrix. Abstract:A diagnostic method of induction motor stator winding interturn short circuit fault based on the feature impedance is proposed in this paper. The fundamental positive and negative sequence components of the voltage and current are separated effectively by the improved multiple reference frames theory and Hilbert transform, then the impedance matrix of the motor is calculated. Taking the fluctuation of the load, supply unbalance and the inherent asymmetry of the motor into account, the feature impedance Znp in the impedance matrix is selected as the stator winding interturn short circuit fault character, for its sensitivity and reliability. A series of experiments on a 4kW induction motor give the relationship between the amplitude of the feature impedance and the short circuit fault. Corresponding to the different input power, the fault diagnosis threshold and fault severity factor are set up. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of this method

Abstract:Inter-turn short circuit (ITSC) is a common fault in induction motors. However, it is challenging to detect the early stage of ITSC fault. To address this issue, this paper proposes an ITSC fault detection method for three-phase induction motors based on start-up current envelope energy. This approach uses Akima interpolation to calculate the envelope of the measured start-up current of the induction motor. A Gaussian window weighting is applied to eliminate endpoint effects caused by the initial phase angle, and the enveloping energy is obtained using the energy formula as the fault feature. Finally, by combining this with the support vector machine (SVM) classification learner, fault detection of ITSC in induction motors is achieved. The experimental results show that the average accuracy of this method reaches 96.9%, which can quickly and accurately detect ITSC faults in asynchronous motors and determine the severity of the faults. Furthermore, the average accuracy of SVM in detecting early ITSC faults under no-load conditions is 98.8%, which is higher than other classification learners, including LR, KNN, and NN. This study provides a new idea for induction motor fault detection and can contribute to induction motor maintenance.

Abstract:An induction motor is an electric machine widely used in various industrial and commercial applications due to its efficiency and simple design. In this regard, a methodology based on the electric phasor analysis of line currents and the variations in the phase angles among these line currents is proposed. The values in degrees of the angles between every pair of line currents were introduced to a fuzzy logic algorithm based on the Mamdani model, developed using the Matlab toolbox for detection and isolation of the inter-turn short-circuit faults on the windings of an induction motor. To carry out the analysis, the induction motor was modified in its stator windings to artificially induce short-circuit faults of different magnitudes. The current signals are acquired in real time using a digital platform developed in the Delphi 7 high-level language communicating with a float point unit Digital Signal Processor (DSP) TMS320F28335 by Texas Instruments. The proposed method not only detects the short circuit faults but also isolates the faulty winding.

Abstract:Three-phase induction motors are used in the industry commonly for example woodworking machines, blowers, pumps, conveyors, elevators, compressors, mining industry, automotive industry, chemical industry and railway applications. Diagnosis of faults is essential for proper maintenance. Faults may damage a motor and damaged motors generate economic losses caused by breakdowns in production lines. In this paper the authors develop fault diagnostic techniques of the three-phase induction motor. The described techniques are based on the analysis of thermal images of three-phase induction motor. The authors analyse thermal images of 3 states of the three-phase induction motor: healthy three-phase induction motor, three-phase induction motor with 2 broken bars, three-phase induction motor with faulty ring of squirrel-cage. In this paper the authors develop an original method of the feature extraction of thermal images MoASoID (Method of Areas Selection of Image Differences). This method compares many training sets together and it selects the areas with the biggest changes for the recognition process. Feature vectors are obtained with the use of mentioned MoASoID and image histogram. Next 3 methods of classification are used: NN (the Nearest Neighbour classifier), K-means, BNN (the back-propagation neural network). The described fault diagnostic techniques are useful for protection of three-phase induction motor and other types of rotating electrical motors such as: DC motors, generators, synchronous motors.

Abstract:Inverter-fed induction motors (IMs) contain a serious of current harmonics, which become severer under stator and rotor faults. The resultant fault components in the currents affect the monitoring of the motor status. With this background, the fault components in the electromagnetic torque under stator faults considering harmonics are derived in this paper, and the fault components in current harmonics under rotor faults are analyzed. More importantly, the monitoring based on the fault characteristics (both in the torque and current) is proposed to provide reliable stator and rotor fault diagnosis. Specifically, the fault components induced by stator faults in the electromagnetic torque are discussed in this paper, and then, fault components are characterized in the torque spectrum to identify stator faults. To achieve so, a full-order flux observer is adopted to calculate the torque. On the other hand, under rotor faults, the sidebands caused by time and space harmonics in the current are analyzed and exploited to recognize rotor faults, being the motor current signature analysis (MCSA). Experimental tests are performed on an inverter-fed 2.2 kW/380 V/50 Hz IM, which verifies the analysis and the effectiveness of the proposed fault diagnosis methods of inverter-fed IMs.
Fault Diagnosis on Induction Motor using Machine Learning and Signal Processing

Abstract:The detection and identification of induction motor faults using machine learning and signal processing is a valuable approach to avoiding plant disturbances and shutdowns in the context of Industry 4.0. In this work, we present a study on the detection and identification of induction motor faults using machine learning and signal processing with MATLAB Simulink. We developed a model of a three-phase induction motor in MATLAB Simulink to generate healthy and faulty motor data. The data collected included stator currents, rotor currents, input power, slip, rotor speed, and efficiency. We generated four faults in the induction motor: open circuit fault, short circuit fault, overload, and broken rotor bars. We collected a total of 150,000 data points with a 60-40% ratio of healthy to faulty motor data. We applied Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) to detect and identify healthy and unhealthy conditions and added a distinctive feature in our data. The generated dataset was trained different machine learning models. On comparing the accuracy of the models on the test set, we concluded that the Decision Tree algorithm performed the best with an accuracy of about 92%. Our study contributes to the literature by providing a valuable approach to fault detection and classification with machine learning models for industrial applications.

Abstract:The present work proposes the study and development of a strategy that uses an optimization algorithm combined with pattern classifiers to identify short-circuit stator failures, broken rotor bars and bearing wear in three-phase induction motors, using voltage, current, and speed signals. The Differential Evolution, Particle Swarm Optimization, and Simulated Annealing algorithms are used to estimate the electrical parameters of the induction motor through the equivalent electrical circuit and the failure identification arises by variation of these parameters with the evolution of each fault. The classification of each type of failure is tested using Artificial Neural Network, Support Vector Machine and k-Nearest Neighbor. The database used for this work was obtained through laboratory experiments performed with 1-HP and 2-HP line-connected motors, under mechanical load variation and unbalanced voltage.

Abstract:Apart from the passive fault-tolerant control strategies, any active fault-tolerant strategy requires a timely fault diagnosis signal to trigger the control reconfiguration under asymmetric condition. This article proposes a fault diagnosis method where the inherent relationship between fundamental and third harmonic stationary reference currents is established by declaring two new groups of current-based variables. Then two distinct fault characteristics of current performance in the transient conversion from healthy to faulty operation are derived. Based on the fault characteristics, a fast, robust and easy-implemented diagnosis algorithm is proposed based on currents in stationary reference frame to address the multiple open-switch fault diagnosis in five-phase permanent magnet machines. In order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, a series of experiments have been conducted and the results indicate the strong robustness even under load variation and the valid diagnosis to each type of faults are performed. Moreover, the proposed method possesses favorable generality and can be extended to other multiphase machines.
