Abstract:Copper-catalyzed Sonogashira reaction has been realized under biphasic conditions (water / organic substrates) allowing decreasing the copper loading up to 0.02-0.2 mol %. Abstract:Sonogashira coupling is one of the cornerstone Palladium mediated cross coupling reactions, giving a direct and high yield access to symmetric and non‐symmetric alkynes with high tolerance of substituents. The method generally requires the use of CuI as a cocatalyst, an inert atmosphere to protect palladium catalyst, somewhat harsh conditions like prolonged heating and the use of organic solvents due to the hydrophobicity of reagents and products. Leveraging on the opportunities offered by micellar catalysis, we here present a general methodology to perform Sonogashira coupling in water, with moderate or no heating, under air, without copper co‐catalysts and at very low catalyst loading. The method offers the same generality and scope of organic solvents based couplings, but strongly improves sustainability while offering excellent yields.

Abstract:A tandem process of micellar catalysis and cloud point extraction (CPE) is developed for copper-catalyzed Ullmann C-S coupling reactions in water. The functional nonionic surfactant, amine terminated polyether M2070, affords nano-micelle environment in the aqueous system; the latter splits to two phases above the cloud point temperature (CPT). The nature of the micellar catalysis in M2070 aqueous was investigated by DLS, EDS, XPS, IR, TEM and 1H NMR. M2070 was verified to provide nano-space for encapsulation and aggregation of the substrates. More importantly, the metallic micelle formed by M2070 chelating copper was identified. It is noteworthy that excellent productivity in pre-micellar catalysis of C-S coupling reactions was obtained with good tolerance of substrate. Finally, the water-micelle system was separated into two phases above the CPT thus to achieve the product separation. Furthermore, the M2070/water system can be recycled and reused.

Abstract:The exploration of inexpensive and stable heterogeneous catalysts and application of green solvents for Ullmann C-N coupling reaction remain challenging. We present a facile fabrication of copper nanoparticles on hydrochar as prepared from natural, inexpensive and renewable chitosan together with in-situ reduction of copper salt in a one-pot hydrothermal carbonization process. The copper nanoparticles were uniformly dispersed on hydrochar by choosing block copolymer F127 as surfactant. Moreover, maleic acid was introduced to improve the hydrophilicity of hydrochar. The most active copper nanocomposite catalyst, that is, Cu/HCS-MA-F127, exhibited excellent catalytic activity for Ullmann C-N coupling reaction in water. The nature of the Cu/HCS-MA-F127 was characterized by FTIR spectroscopy, TG, XRD, SEM and XPS. Moderate to excellent yields of aimed products were gained by using this catalytic strategy. Moreover, the Cu/HCS-MA-F127 catalyst can be reused by simple centrifugal recovery with a stable performance.

Abstract:Aryl bromides and 4‐chlorotoluene as an example aryl chloride in the presence of N‐heterocyclic carbene (NHC) palladium hydroxo dimers of the type [{Pd(μ‐OH)Cl(NHC)}2] (where NHC = IPr, SIPr, IMes, SIMes) undergo an efficient and selective Sonogashira cross‐coupling with (hetero)arylacetylenes. The procedure allows the high‐throughput and selective synthesis of a broad spectrum of 1,2‐diarylacetylenes using 10 ppm of [{Pd(OH)Cl(IPr)}2] as precatalyst. For the coupling of 4‐chlorotoluene with phenylacetylene, TON = 560000 was achieved. Hydrogen chloride was observed as a product of the Sonogashira cross‐coupling reaction. The formation of the active Pd(0) from the Pd(II) complex was found to proceed via ethanol oxidation. Mechanistic studies showed that water plays a key role in the reaction.

Abstract:An efficient palladium-catalyzed copper-free Sonogashira reaction in water and acetone has been developed under mild conditions. The results showed that the aryl iodides could carry out the cross-coupling reaction with a variety of terminal alkynes in high yields in water-acetone in the absence of amine, copper(l) salts, or phosphine ligands at 60 degrees C for one hour, and good yields were obtained for aryl bromides at 60 degrees C for 12-24 hours in the presence of triphenylphosphine and piperidine. The method could be used to synthesize polyethynyl aromatic compounds in a one-pot reaction.

Abstract:In this work, the preparation of titania-supported Pd catalyst deriving from pincer-type orthopalladated azo-complex is presented. The new highly dispersed Pd catalyst was prepared through a pH-controlled adsorption method and fully characterized by FT-IR, XRD, TGA, FE-SEM, TEM and N 2 adsorption/desorption techniques. The Pd/TiO 2 nano-catalyst was then applied as an efficient heterogeneous catalyst for copper-free Sonogashira cross-coupling reactions of a representative range of aryl iodides, bromides, and chlorides with phenylacetylene with the very low catalyst Pd-loading. The coupling products were obtained in high yields in environmentally friendly reaction media. The catalyst was successfully recycled over six runs, with no significant loss of catalytic activity.

Abstract:A rapid copper- and ligand-free Sonogashira reaction was performed in an oil-in-water microemulsion. Palladium nanoparticles can be in situ formed in the microemulsion without other reductants. The microemulsion containing in situ-formed nano-Pd is an efficient system for the Sonogashira reaction. The reactions were faster in the microemulsion than in micelles. The effects of surfactant, alcohol, and temperature are discussed. Excellent yield of the Sonogashira reaction catalyzed by 0.5 mol% palladium could be achieved at 80 degrees C within 2 min. (c) 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Similarly, the coupling of sodium tetraphenylborate with iodonium salts easily occurred in acidic water medium at 50 degrees C in good yields. Though hydrophobic, this molecular catalyst is competent in cross-coupling reactions of arylboronic acids with a variety of electronically activated, unactivated, and deactivated aryl iodides, bromides, and chlorides upon heating in aqueous solutions under aerobic conditions to give biphenyl derivatives without the necessity of amphiphiles even in the presence of an excess amount of mercury.

Abstract:An efficient copper-catalyzed method has been developed for Sonogashira couplings of aryl halides with terminal alkynes in water. The protocol uses inexpensive CuBr as the catalyst, 1,10-phenanthroline as the ligand, tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB) as the phase-transfer catalyst, environmentally friendly water as the solvent, and various internal alkynes were synthesized in good to excellent yields.
