Abstract:One‐dimensional mesoporous CoP nanorods have been successfully synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method and subsequent low‐temperature thermal phosphorization treatment. At a current density of 500 mA g –1 , CoP nanorods as anode materials for lithium ion batteries deliver a high discharge capacity of 894 mAh g –1 after 300 cycles, with a coulombic efficiency of over 99 %. Even at a high current rate of 4000 mA g –1 , the discharge capacity of the CoP electrode can still retain 467 mAh g –1 . The results suggest that the introduction of cobalt and the special mesoporous nanorods play important roles in enhancing the electrochemical properties. Therefore, this rodlike CoP electrode is competent as a promising anode material for high‐performance lithium‐ion batteries.

Abstract:Cobalt alkoxide suspension is obtained by heating a mixed polyalcohol solution of cobalt acetate in an oil bath at 170 degrees C. Thermogravimetric analysis is adopted to determine the chemical formula of the alkoxide powder in the suspension. With the suspension precursors, CoO/Co composite thin films are fabricated by electrostatic spray deposition and subsequent heat treatment in nitrogen. They are characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Electron energy loss spectroscopy mapping is applied to determine the lateral two-dimensional chemical distribution of metallic Co in the nanocomposites. The thin film can deliver a high reversible capacity of 1182.1 mAh g(-1) at 70th cycle and retain 69.5% of the initial capacity at 10C. The in situ production of metallic cobalt and the unique hollow structure of the particles can account for the good electrochemical performance. (C) 2012 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Thin films of nanocrystalline Co3O4 have been prepared by reactive pulsed laser deposition (PLD) method in oxygen ambient. The film electrode of Co3O4 has a reversible capacity of 1000 mAh/g and its capacity fading is less than 0.2% per cycle at a discharge of 3 C. X-Ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photo-electron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements demonstrated that the deposited films composed of cubic spinel Co3O4 with the mean size of ∼50 nm. The nano-sized structure of the Co3O4 plays an important role in the superior reversible capacity and good cycling performance. Our results also demonstrate the promise of pulsed laser deposition for the fabrication of nanocrystalline Co3O4 film for all-solid-state thin film rechargeable lithium batteries.

Abstract:This paper describes a facile chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and subsequent radio-frequency (RF)-sputtering approach for the synthesis of CoO/NiSi(x) core-shell nanowire (NW) arrays on Ni foams. The metallic core (i.e., NiSi(x)) with high conductivity acts as a nanostructured current collector. The as-synthesized CoO/NiSi(x) core-shell NW arrays have been applied as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, which deliver high cycle life and enhanced power performance compared to planar CoO electrodes on Ni foams. The high surface-to-volume ratio and improved electronic/ionic conductivity of the nanostructured electrodes may be responsible for the improved performance.

Abstract:Nanocomposite particles of amorphous carbon-Li4Ti5O12 (C-LTO) and carbon nanotube-Li4Ti5O12 (CNT-LTO) were synthesized by solvothermal method and subsequent high-temperature calcination. X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), and selected area electron diffraction (SAED) were applied to characterize the phase structure, particle morphology, and the coating structure. XRD analysis, TEM micrographs, HR-TEM images and SAED analysis revealed that both LTO particles exhibited a well- developed spinel nanocrystal structure with average sizes between 20-70 nm. The C-LTO particles exhibited roughly spherical shape coated by an amorphous carbon layer up to 10 nm in thickness. The CNT-LTO samples showed uniform square nanocrystals with edge length around 20 nm and nanoscale graphitic layers covering the surface, revealing the carbon nanotubes interconnection networks among the particle assemblies. Electrochemical studies of lithium insertion/extraction performance are evaluated by the galvanostatic charge/discharge tests, cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Both LTO particles showed the superior initial discharge capacity of more than 200 mAh/g at 1/10C rate. The irreversible capacity of the C-LTO particles at more cycles was due to large polarization resulted from excessive carbon and possible residual precursors. The CNT-LTO particles show larger reversible capacity and enhanced electrochemical Li+ insertion/extraction kinetics at different cycling rates. The comparative structural and electrochemical analyses demonstrated that both nanoscale graphitic covering layers and the CNT interconnection networks increase the electronic conductivity and improve the kinetics rates of lithium insertion/extraction in the CNT-LTO particles.

Abstract:Layered stacking and highly porous N, P co-doped Mo2 C/C nanosheets are prepared from a stable Mo-enhanced hydrogel. The hydrogel is formed through the ultrafast cross-linking of phosphomolybdic acid and chitosan. During the reduction of the composite hydrogel framework under inert gas protection, highly porous N and P co-doped carbon nanosheets are produced with the in situ formation of ultrafine Mo2 C nanoparticles highly distributed throughout the nanosheets which are entangled via a hierarchical lamellar infrastructure. This unique architecture of the N, P co-doped Mo2 C/C nanosheets tremendously promote the electrochemical activity and operate stability with high specific capacity and extremely stable cycling. In particular, this versatile synthetic strategy can also be extended to other polyoxometalate (such as phosphotungstic acid) to provide greater opportunities for the controlled fabrication of novel hierarchical nanostructures for next-generation high performance energy storage applications.
Coralloidal carbon-encapsulated CoP nanoparticles generated on biomass carbon as a high-rate and stable electrode material for lithium-ion batteries

Abstract:Architecture of electrode materials plays an important role in achieving favorable electrochemical performance via providing fast electronic transport pathway and shorten lithium ion diffusion distance. Herein, ultrafine CoP nanoparticles were successfully embedded in carbon nanorod, which were grown on the biomass-derived carbon (BC). When applied as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, these CoP@C/BC displayed capable specific capacity, remarkable rate ability and outstanding long-term cycling performance. The capacity was governed by combination of diffusion-controlled and capacitive processes, according to quantitative kinetic analysis. The good electrochemical performance is attributed to hierarchical construction of nanosized CoP embedded in carbon nanorod and BC with high conductivity composite, which relieve the volume changing of CoP and provide large electrode/electrolyte interface. The present design of hierarchical architecture can be extended to other transition metal-based oxides, sulfide and phosphide electrode materials for high performance alkali metal ion batteries.
Cobalt Ferrite Thin Films As Anode Material for Lithium Ion Batteries

Abstract:Spinel cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4) thin films have been fabricated by 355nm reactive pulsed laser deposition on stainless steel substrates. XRD and SEM analyses showed that the CoFe2O4 films exhibited a polycrystalline structure and were composed of nanoparticles with an average size of 80nm. At 1C rate, the initial irreversible capacity of polycrystalline CoFe2O4 film electrode cycled between 0.01 and 3.0V reached 1280mAh/g. After 20 cycles, the reversible discharge capacities decreased and sustained about 610mAh/g. The diffusion coefficient of Li ion for CoFe2O4 films was determined by ac impedance method, and the average value was estimated to be 1.1 × 10−13cm2/S. Based on ex situ XRD, SEM and XPS data, the electrochemical mechanism of CoFe2O4 film with lithium upon cycling was proposed. During the first discharge, the amorphization process of CoFe2O4 film electrode is accompanied with the reduction of Co2+ and Fe3+ into metal Co and Fe, respectively, and then the reversible oxidation/reduction processes of Co, Fe and Li2O take place in the subsequent charge/discharge cycles.
A Nanocrystalline Nio Thin-Film Electrode Prepared by Pulsed Laser Ablation for Li-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Nanocrystalline NiO thin-film electrodes were prepared by reactive pulsed laser ablation of a metallic Ni target in an oxygen ambient. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy measurements demonstrated that the films deposited on stainless steel substrate exhibited nanocrystalline structure with average particle size of similar to30 nm. Electrochemical properties of NiO films were examined by cyclic voltammetry and charge-discharge measurements. Excellent electrochemical performance, a reversible capacity as high as 700 mAh/g in the range of 0.01-3.0 V at high current density (80 muA/cm(2)) with a high capacity retention up to 100 cycles, could be achieved with optimized NiO films. The improved specific capacity, discharge rate, and cycling performance might be related to the nanosized character of the thin-film electrode of NiO. Combining the XRD and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results, we proposed an electrochemical replacement reaction mechanism for the nanocrystalline NiO film with lithium during the discharge/charge processes. This NiO thin film could be used as a promising anode material for all-solid-state thin film rechargeable Li-ion batteries. (C) 2002 The Electrochemical Society.

Abstract:Transition metal phosphides are emerging as potential anode materials for lithium ion batteries (LIBs) owing to their high theoretical capacity and good thermal stability, but the severe volume changes during the charge/discharge process and low electrical conductivity have hampered their practical application. Herein, we demonstrate the facile synthesis of carbon-coated CoP nanoparticles (CoP@C) with uniform spherical morphology through solvothermal method followed by annealing and phosphating treatments, in which an interesting precursor, Co-gluconate complex, is prepared as the Co/C sources. When used as LIB anode, the CoP@C electrode displays excellent cycling stability with a reversible capacity of 483.4 mA h g-1 upon 1000 cycles at 0.5 A g-1. The superior lithium storage performance is attributed to the unique composite structure of CoP@C with the nanosized CoP particles wrapped into the carbon matrices, which could enhance the electrical conductivity, provide sufficient reaction sites, shorten the Li+ transport path and buffer the volume changes of the electrode upon lithiation/delithiation. More importantly, the strategy of generating gluconate-metal complex as the metal- and carbon-containing precursor can be widely applied in the synthesis of various functional materials for energy-related applications.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:AbstractWe report a facile synthesis of a novel cobalt oxide (Co3O4) hierarchical nanostructure, in which crystalline core-amorphous shell Co3O4 nanoparticles with a bimodal size distribution are uniformly dispersed on ultrathin Co3O4 nanosheets. When tested as anode materials for lithium ion batteries, the as-prepared Co3O4 hierarchical electrodes delivered high lithium storage properties comparing to the other Co3O4 nanostructures, including a high reversible capacity of 1053.1 mAhg−1 after 50 cycles at a current density of 0.2 C (1 C = 890 mAg−1), good cycling stability and rate capability.

Abstract:Transition-metal oxides are attracting considerable attention as anodes for lithium-ion batteries because of their high reversible capacities. However, the drastic volume change and inferior electrical conductivity greatly retard their widespread applications in lithium-ion batteries. Herein, three-dimensional nanoporous composites of CoOx (CoO and Co3O4) quantum dots and zeolitic imidazolate framework-67-derived carbon are fabricated by a precipitation method. The carbon prepared by carbonization of zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 can greatly enhance the electrical conductivity of the composite anodes. CoOx quantum dots anchored firmly on zeolitic imidazolate framework-67-derived carbon can effectively inhibit the aggregation and volume change of CoOx quantum dots during lithiation/delithiation processes. The nanoporous structure can shorten the ion diffusion paths and maintain the structural integrity upon cycling. Meanwhile, kinetics analysis reveals that a capacitance mechanism dominates the lithium storage capacity, which can greatly enhance the electrochemical performance. The composite anodes show a high discharge capacity of 1873 mAh g–1 after 200 cycles at 200 mA g–1, ultralong cycle life (1246 mAh g–1 after 900 cycles at 1000 mA g–1), and improved rate performance. This work may provide guidelines for preparing cobalt oxide-based anodes for LIBs.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:We report on the synthesis of a Co3O4-C core-shell nanowire array and its application as an anode material for lithium ion batteries. The core-shell nanowire array is prepared by combining a facial hydrothermal synthesis and direct current magnetron sputtering. The amorphous carbon layer with a thickness of 18 nm is homogeneously coated on the surface of the porous Co3O4 nanowire. The Co3O4-C core-shell nanowire array delivers an initial discharge capacity of 1330.8 mA h g(-1) at 0.5 C and maintains a high reversible capacity of 989.0 mA h g(-1) after 50 cycles, much higher than the unmodified Co3O4 nanowire array (490.5 mA h g(-1)). The improved electrochemical performance can be attributed to the introduction of a thin carbon layer, which improves the electrical conductivity and structure stability of the Co3O4 nanowire array.
Activating AlN Thin Film by Introducing Co Nanoparticles As a New Anode Material for Thin-Film Lithium Batteries

Abstract:AlN/Co nanocomposite thin films were fabricated by pulsed laser deposition and investigated as new anode materials for lithium-ion batteries for the first time. The combination of electrochemically inactive AlN and Co in nanometer scale boosted the electrochemical performance of the thin films surprisingly. A high reversible capacity of 555 mAh·g−1 after 100 discharge–charge cycles at a current density of 500 mA·g−1 is obtained for the AlN/Co nanocomposite thin films, and 372 mAh·g−1 can be retained at a high rate up to 16C, exhibiting promising cycle stability and rate capability. The electrochemical reaction mechanism study reveals that Co nanoparticles could not only provide high electronic conductivity for the thin films, which facilitate the thorough decomposition of AlN in the initial discharge process, but also react with Li3N to form a new species Co2N during charge process, thus ensuring large capacity and high reversibility of AlN/Co nanocomposite thin films in subsequent cycles. This study provides a new perspective to design advanced electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Co3O4 nanoparticles with a mass loading over 70 wt% are homogeneously grown on super-aligned carbon nanotube films using a pyrolysis method with Co(NO3)(2) as a precursor. Benefiting from the flexible and highly conductive carbon nanotube scaffold, the Co3O4/carbon nanotube composite electrode exhibits great cycling stability (910 mA h g(-1) after 50 cycles at 0.1 C) as well as excellent rate performance (820 mA h g(-1) at 1 C), and can be considered as a promising anode material for high performance lithiumion batteries.

Abstract:AbstractA novel one-step hydrothermal and calcination strategy was developed to synthesize the unique 1D oriented Co3O4 crystal nanofibers with (220) facets on the carbon matrix derived from the natural, abundant and low cost wool fibers acting as both carbon precursor and template reagent. The resultant W2@Co3O4 nanocomposite exhibited very high specific capacity and favorable high-rate capability when used as anode material of lithium ion battery. The high reversible Li+ ion storage capacity of 986 mAh g−1 was obtained at 100 mA g−1 after 150 cycles, higher than the theoretical capacity of Co3O4 (890 mAh g−1). Even at the higher current density of 1 A g−1, the electrode could still deliver a remarkable discharge capacity of 720 mAh g−1 over 150 cycles.

Abstract:Cobalt oxide thin films composed of hollow spherical Co3O4 particles have been prepared by a two-step method. The first step involves in the synthesis of hollow cobalt alkoxide particles in a stable suspension from mixed polyalcohol solutions of cobalt acetate in oil bath at 170°C. The second step includes the thin film fabrication by electrostatic spray deposition (ESD) and subsequent heat treatment in nitrogen. The obtained Co3O4 films with the unique hollow particle microstructure exhibit high reversible capacity of above 1000mAhg−1 during up to 50 cycles and good rate capability. The films are promising negative electrodes for high energy lithium-ion batteries.

Our results demonstrated that the addition of SiO2 into LiCoO2 should play an important role in the reversibility of the crystalline structure and morphological changes by using ex situ HRTEM, SAED and SEM. The nano-SiO2 modified lithium cobalt oxide film could be a promising candidate of cathode material for lithium ion battery due to its good reversibility.
