Abstract:Poly(butyl acrylate)/nanosilica (PBA/SiO2) composite particles were prepared by in situ emulsion polymerization initiated by 2,2’-azobis(2-amidinopropane)dihydrochloride (AIBA) initiator adsorbed on the surface of nanosilica particles. The morphology of the composite particles was observed by transmission electron microscopy, and the combination grade of PBA latex particles with SiO2 particles was characterized by centrifugation/re-dispersion and HF etching experiments. The results show that the PBA/SiO2 composite particles exhibit the raspberry-like morphology with most SiO2 particles aggregated at the surface of PBA latex particles. When the mass fraction of SiO2 in the composite particles is in the range of 14.6% to 22.6%, more than 60% SiO2 particles are enriched on the surface of composite particles, and about 30% SiO2 particles are encapsulated in the inner of composite particles. The results also show that the combination strength between SiO2 particles and PBA in the composite particles prepared by in situ emulsion polymerization is stronger than that in the composite particles prepared by direct mixing of PBA latex (prepared by using AIBA as initiator) and SiO2 dispersion. It was considered that, via the ATBA adsorbed on the surface of SiO2 particles, the PBA chains are anchored onto SiO2 particles during in situ emulsion polymerization, the hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity of SiO2 particles and compatibility of SiO2 with PBA vary with the amount of anchored PBA, these lead to the above distribution manner of SiO2 particles in the composite latexes and the morphology of the resultant composite particles.
