Abstract:Objective To explore HIV/AIDS-related high risky behaviors and the social determinants of these behaviors among youth out of schools, and to derive information for behavior intervention on HIV/AIDS prevention targeting this group of population. Methods 584 youth out of schools were selected using collective random sampling and surveyed using a self-administered questionnaire. Results 42.6% of the respondents had sexual experience. The proportion of male out of schools with sex expe-rience was higher (62.3%) than that of female out of schools (37.7%). And 31.6% of the youth seldom or never used condoms while having sex; 51.2% of the youth did not use condoms in his/her last sex experience; 28.2% of the youth had been invovled in commercial sex behavior; and 22 of the respondents (3.8%) had used drug. The level of HIV/AIDS awareness and perceived susceptibility of HIV infection were factors influencing condom use. Conclusions Unsafe sex and drug use are common among the youth out of schools, which indicates that there is a need to enhance the awareness of HIV/AIDS and promote safer sex among this group.
