Abstract:Detection of flaw echoes is an important task in ultrasonic testing.In order to eliminate the effects of noise and detect echoes correctly,a signal processing method based on the S-transformation (ST) and the time-frequency spectrum (TFS) spatial filtering was proposed.Based on the Gaussian echo model,the relationships between the time of arrival (TOA) together with the center frequency (CF) and ST TFS were discussed.The reasonableness of the method using the extremum of ST TFS amplitude matrix for TOA and CF extraction were illustrated.To detect the echoes,firstly the ST was performed on the original signal.Then the dual-threshold were determined by the Maximum Entropy Thresholding method adaptively,and the spatial filtering was performed on ST TFS for denoising.The TOA and CF could be extracted from the denoised region.Finally,the inverse ST was performed on the denoised TFS and the signal with clear flaw echoes were gained.Simulation results show that using ST and TFS spatial filtering can remove noise and detect echoes effectively.And the experimental results of bar specimen also show the effectiveness of the method in flaw detection.

Abstract:The eddy current testing forward model of scanning inspection of multi-layered structures is introduced and simulation work is carried out to reveal the interaction between the scanning coil and defects with different geometric properties. A multi-frequency ECT experimental instrument combined with a scanner is established and scanning inspections are performed to detect the artificial etched flaws with different geometric parameters in the multi-layered structures. The predicted signals by the forward model are compared with the measured signals and the defects are characterized.

Abstract:The paper proposes a method for crack detection using the magnetic optic image. It presents a way to filter the magnetic domain spots based on the image segmentation method utilizing the connectivity principle of image. As the area of the crack is much bigger than the magnetic domain spots and there is a mutation in the point, whose normalized slope is beyond \(45^\circ \), between the crack and the magnetic domain spots after sorting the area value of them, the machinery could filter the magnetic domain spots. In order to filter the spots, how to select the threshold is very important. The paper presents a self-adapting selection method to choose the threshold which based the pixel filling model. There would be a fast changing point of the filling area curve when the area increases. There is a corresponding filling value that is considered as the good threshold. Based on the features, the detecting system can recognize the crack clearly and the results would confirmed it.

Abstract:Cracks that may cause pipeline cracking and leakage become the main risk of in-service pipelines after conventional metal loss defects have been detected. Therefore, it is imperative to develop ultra-high-definition magnetic flux leakage (MFL) detection for cracks. Due to the larger spatial sampling interval of conventional MFL inspections than the crack defect width, sparse sampling will result in problems such as missed detection of crack defects or insufficient signal sampling of crack defect MFL signals. To address the problem, this paper presents a detection topology in which the magnetic field signal is integrated first and then sampled, and it can effectively sample the leakage magnetic field of cracks. Furthermore, a magnetic field spatial integration (MFSI) method is proposed based on the magnetic dipole model, which develops an analytical solution for the depth quantification of crack defects. Using the multi-MFL spatial integral values under different lift offs, iterative equations are constructed, and the numerical solution for the width quantification of crack defects is provided. The finite element simulation and physical experiment are constructed. And, the results show that the proposed MFSI method can realize the quantification of crack size. When the crack defect aspect ratio is greater than 4, the quantization error of the crack depth and width does not exceed 0.7 mm and 0.1 mm, respectively. The robustness of the MFSI method for crack quantification is also discussed and verified. Moreover, based on theoretical analysis and simulation data, this paper concludes that the distribution of cracks MFL signal is width-insensitive, which would cause that classic MFL opening profile recognition methods for metal loss defects are no longer applicable to crack defects. Therefore, the proposed MFSI method is useful and meaningful for crack defect quantification in ultra-high-definition MFL detection.
The Real-Time Quantitation and Display Method for Incomplete Defect MFL Signals

Abstract:Defect real-time quantitation and display is critical for tank floor magnetic flux leakage (MFL) testing. Since the detection process is continuous, which means the data processing area may contain the incomplete MFL signals. This paper proposed a novel real-time quantitation and display method for the condition of incomplete defect MFL signals. This method is mainly for defect edge recognition and depth estimation. Firstly, to identify the defect edge for the incomplete MFL signals, the edge identification method based on the Sobel discrete different operator has been putting forward. Then, to estimate the defect depth, putting forward rapid depth estimation method based on the quantification neural network, key characterise abstraction and signal equivalent processing. Finally, sums up the real-time display method after estimating the edge and depth of the defects. By experimental verification, this method can realize the defects’ quantitative and display for the incomplete defect MFL signals effectively.

Abstract:Pulsed eddy current (PEC) technology has become a burgeoning method for detection and analysis of multi-layer conductive structures owing to rich time and frequency domain information presented by PEC signals. In this study, PEC technique is applied to characterise hidden-defect parameters while nondestructively inspecting multi-layer structures. A projection pursuit (PP) feature extraction method based on the information divergence index is investigated to effectively analyse PEC signals. An improved accelerating genetic algorithm is adopted to find the optimal projection direction. The signal's dimension is reduced with minimal information loss while the data's structure is preserved to the greatest degree. The features extracted on the basis of PP are simultaneously employed in crack localisation and crack length quantitative evaluation combined with a SVM classifier. The theoretical analysis and experimental results demonstrate that compared with the principal component analysis method, the features extracted by the presented PP algorithm work better for simultaneously characterising crack's depth and size information and it reflect the inherent laws of the data, which make the features more physically interpretation meanwhile. Inversion accuracy for smaller and deeper cracks is enhanced obviously which will be helpful for crack localisation and quantitative identification of crack parameters in difficult situations.

Abstract:Magnetic flux leakage (MFL) testing technique is a commonly used method for the defect analyze and imaging. Due to the restriction of MFL measurement system, in many cases, only one component MFL signal can be measured to analyze the defect, which discounts the defect estimation effect. This paper innovatively puts forward a three-dimensional (3-D) pseudo magnetic flux leakage (PMFL) signal processing technique to solve this problem. The 3-D PMFL signal is only derived from the normal component signal, but can similarly reflect the changing pattern of the whole 3-D MFL signal. Combined with the proposed defect estimation method based on the 3-D PMFL, the defect opening profile can be estimated efficiently. Comparison tests demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed method, and the accuracy of the estimation result based on the 3-D PMFL is superior to that based on only 1-D MFL.

Abstract:In order to improve sensitivity through information fusion technology, a combined DC magnetic flux leakage and eddy current testing method is proposed. Experimental results indicate that the inner wall cracks inthe steel pipe arc detected by eddy current system. In fact, the dilemma between the experimental signal and skin effect principle is obviously. Two factors including permeability and magnetic flux leakage that have influence on eddy current signal are analyzed with finite element method and verification experiments of magnetic source. So the viewpoint, that the signal of the internal crack is caused by eddy current effect may be erroneous. Perturbed magnetic field is analyzed by using equivalent source method. Theoretical analysis shows that magnetic flux leakage produced by the crack is far stronger than perturbed magnetic field induced by eddy current effect. The induced electromotive force is created by the variation of the magnetic flux within the cross section of the pick-up coil when the probe moves along the steel pipe with a crack. The signal produced by eddy current effect is submerged. Therefore, the signal of eddy current probe is induced by magnetic flux leakage produced by the crack. Eddy current testing results of ferromagnetic materials under saturation magnetization should he reinterpreted.
Discriminative Method for Crack Detection Signals in Balanced-Field Electromagnetic Technique Based on Amplitude–Phase Composite Figure

Abstract:The balanced-field electromagnetic technique is an effective in-line inspection method for pipeline cracks. To address the problem that the interference signal generated by the tilt jitter of the sensor during the detection process affects the judgment of cracks, this paper proposes a method to differentiate the crack detection signal from the sensor jitter signal by using an amplitude–phase composite figure. The generation principle of the detection signal was analyzed by using the mutual inductance model, and the amplitude–phase composite figure was constructed by using the components of the detection signal after quadrature demodulation. The feasibility of using the phase as a signal discrimination feature was illustrated by finite element simulations, and the characteristics of the amplitude–phase composite figure were determined. The validity of the proposed method was verified experimentally. The results show that the crack detection signal and the signal generated by the sensor jitter are of the same frequency with similar waveforms and significantly different phases. The phase base value of the crack detection signal ranges from 35° to 55°, and the phase base value of the jitter signal is −4°. In terms of the characteristics of the amplitude–phase composite figure, the crack detection signal distribution is symmetrical about the origin in the first and third quadrants, and the axial crack is closer to the Y-axis than the circumferential crack; the jitter signal is distributed in the second and fourth quadrants and has a very small angle to the X-axis. In addition, the proposed method effectively weakens the observation of the phase noise region in the detection signal of the balanced-field electromagnetic technique.

Abstract:Magnetic flux leakage (MFL) detection is a common nondestructive detection method which is usually used to detect the surface defects of steel pipes and rails. To suppress the interference of lift-off on the detection signal of the defects in rail head surfaces, a filtering method is proposed according to the distribution characteristics of the defect leakage magnetic field (LMF) in different directions. The sensor array is used to confirm the reference signal according to the difference between the signals in x and z directions. The installation mode of the sensors is deduced according to the distribution of the defect LMF. The experimental results show that this method can effectively suppress the lift-off interference in the MFL signal of the defects in the rail head surfaces.

Abstract:The rail is an important factor in railway traffic safety. Surface defects in the rail head comprise a common type of rail damage, and magnetic flux leakage (MFL) technology is applied for its detection. MFL detection is influenced by various factors, resulting in high noise and a low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in the collected MFL signal, which influence defect assessment. This article improves the empirical wavelet transform (EWT) to apply it to rail surface-defect MFL signal filtering. A boundary optimization method based on mutual information (MI) is proposed to reduce the boundary redundancy caused by adaptive spectrum division. A method for component selection based on MI and kurtosis is proposed to select the suitable components from the decomposed components for signal reconstruction. The experimental results show that the method can effectively filter out the interference in the MFL signal, and the effectiveness is superior to the traditional methods, such as complementary ensemble empirical mode decomposition (CEEMD) and wavelet transform (WT).

Adaptive Filtering Method of MFL Signal on Rail Top Surface Defect Detection

Abstract:Magnetic flux leakage (MFL) detection technology provides an effective method to conduct high-speed detection of the damage suffered by rail surface. With regard to high-speed detection, there is frequently a complex noise contained in the magnetic signal of railway leakage, which is similar to the amplitude of defect and the overlaps of frequency spectrum. In this paper, an improved adaptive filtering method is proposed to solve the problem caused by filtering the MFL signal on the rail top surface. Through the characteristics of distribution shown by defects on the top surface of the railway and those of the data collected by the rail top array sensor, this method is applied to construct a virtual channel containing almost only interference signals but no defects. Then, in combination with the adaptive filtering algorithm, the virtual channel signal is taken as the reference input of the adaptive canceller, each single channel MFL signal is taken as the original input of the adaptive canceller, and the filtered MFL signal is taken as the output. Then, the MFL signal of rail top is collected by the train at the speed of 30km / h on the manual calibration line. According to the experimental results, the noise intensity of MFL signal is reduced by up to 81.44%. In addition, the filtering method is adopted to process MFL signals with different directions and varying detection speed. As indicated by the results, the noise intensity of MFL signal is reduced by more than 74%.

Abstract:In this paper, some progresses in numerical techniques mainly made in our research group for the forward and inverse simulation of electromagnetic nondestructive evaluation (ENDE) signals are introduced. For the first part, efficient forward analysis schemes for the simulation of eddy current testing (ECT), remote field ECT (RFECT) and magnetic flux leakage testing (MFLT) signals are described respectively, in addition to some numerical examples. Fast and accurate ECT signal simulation is realised by introducing a database type strategy using precalculated unflawed potential field data. To meet the high accuracy requirement of the simulation of RFECT signals, a hybrid scheme using 2D and 3D geometry and a new formula for pickup signal are proposed. To improve the efficiency of MFLT signal simulation, a fast scheme is developed based on a FEM-BEM hybrid code of polarisation method. In addition, a phenomenological method is also described in the first part, which is developed for the qualitative estimation of eddy current distribution and pickup signals. The second part of this review paper is on the reconstruction of defect from the detected ENDE signals (mainly ECT signals). Reconstruction schemes based on conjugate gradient (CG) method of deterministic category and NN method, metaheuristic methods of stochastic category are developed and sizing of both artificial and natural cracks are performed by using measured signals. It is clarified through applications that a deterministic optimisation method is more efficient for treating simple cracks, while a stochastic way is prefer for defects of complicated geometry such as a stress corrosion crack and multiple cracks. In the crack modelling and parameterisation, an element of discontinuous material property is introduced to treat crack of arbitrary shape based on a given regular mesh. Several numerical models are proposed for natural cracks, which makes the reconstruction of some natural cracks become possible.

Abstract:Rail is the infrastructure of railway traffic and magnetic flux leakage (MFL) is commonly used to detect the surface defects of ferromagnetic materials such as rail. A correlation-based filtering method is proposed to inhibit the lift-off jamming in MFL detection for the defects in the rail head surface. The detection data is segmented and the two sensors with the minimum correlation coefficient of their outputs in the x direction are found. The possible defect width and depth according to the maximum of each output is estimated and the leakage magnetic field (LMF) of it is calculated. The output of the sensor with smaller correlation coefficient between the calculation LMF and the sensor output is chosen as the reference signal to filter. An experimental system was constructed to detect the artificial defects in the rail head surface, and the experimental results shown that the method reduces the lift-off jamming

Abstract:Local shallow defects on the surface of ferromagnetic materials are difficult to detect and quantify. Imaging of this kind of defects benefits to evaluate the deterioration rate. However, traditional nondestructive testing (NDT) methods have some limitations in detection sensitivity and spatial sizing resolution. To resolve this problem, a 3-D imaging method based on the law of magnetic circuit is proposed, which has a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and high spatial resolution in quantization. Based on this method, a novel sensor consisting of a ring magnet, a T-shaped yoke, and a sensor array is designed, which achieves imaging defects in all directions with the same sensitivity. Three typical defects, including pit, cylindrical, and conical defects, are simulated to explore the relationship between the difference value of the magnetic flux density and the sizes (depth and radius) of these typical defects. Then, the defect reconstruction algorithm is proposed. Furthermore, we analyze the factors that affect the sensor including the relative position of the sensor and the defect, the sensor's lift-off, and tilt. In addition, the sensor's imaging ability to more complex defects is explored. Finally, the experimental study carried out verifies our designed sensor.

Gradient Feature Extract for the Quantification of Complex Defects Using Topographic Primal Sketch in Magnetic Flux Leakage

Abstract:Defect quantification is a very important aspect in nondestructive testing (NDT) as it helps in the analysis and prediction of a structure's integrity and lifespan. In this paper, we propose a gradient feature extraction for the quantification of complex defect using topographic primal sketch (TPS) in magnetic flux leakage (MFL) testing. This method uses four excitation patterns so as to obtain MFL images from experiment; a mean image is then produced, assuming it has 80–90% the properties of all four images. A gradient manipulation is then performed on the mean image using a novel least-squares minimization (LSM) approach, for which, pixels with large gradient values (considered as possible defect pixels) are extracted. These pixels are then mapped so as to get the actual defect geometry/shape within the sample. This map is now traced using a TPS for a precise quantification. Results have shown the ability of the method to extract and quantify defects with high precision given its perimeter, area, and depth. This significantly eliminates errors associated with output analysis as results can be clearly seen, interpreted, and understood.

Abstract:Pipeline magnetic flux leakage (MFL) internal detection technology is the most widely used and effective method in the field of long-distance oil and gas pipeline online detection. With the improvement of data quantization precision, the influence of stress on MFL signal has been paid more and more attention. In this paper, the relationship between stress and saturation magnetization is introduced based on J-A theory. The analytical model of MFL detection signal for pipeline composite defects is established. The MFL signal characteristics of composite defects are quantitatively calculated. The effect of stress on MFL signal is studied. The theoretical analysis is verified by experimental data and excavation results. The researches show that the saturation magnetization of ferromagnets decreases exponentially with the increase of stress in strong magnetic field. The MFL signal of composite defect is weaker than that of volumetric defects of the same dimension. The axial amplitude and radial peak-to-peak value of MFL signal decrease with the increase of stress around the defect. The axial amplitude and radial peak-to-peak value of MFL signal increase non-linearly with the increase of width and depth of defects. When using MFL signal to judge the defect depth, it is necessary to make clear whether there is stress concentration phenomenon around the defect because the stress will lead to underestimation of the defect depth.

Abstract:Magnetic flux leakage (MFL) based on phase extraction for detecting the subsurface defects in ferromagnetic steel plate was investigated. The relationship between electromagnetic field phase and the subsurface defect was analyzed. Low-frequency alternating current (AC) excitation source and high-power magnetizer arrangement with Hall sensor were used to increase the skin depth of the MFL. Experiments results showed that 12 mm deep subsurface defect can be detected by using the phase extraction means, which is about two times higher than that by using the amplitude method.
