Abstract:A new macromolecular chromogenic reagent, named abbreviatedly as PE·PAR, was synthesized by the reaction of PAR with polyethylene glycol. It was found that a positively charged red colored complex was formed between Fe(Ⅲ) and PE·PAR in a borate buffer medium of pH 10 (mole ratio=1∶1) with its absorption maxima at 536nm, and a molar absorptivity of 1.08×10~6L·mol~(-1)·cm~(-1), which is about twice the value of the iron complex formed with the small molecular reagent PAR. The positively charged iron complex was preconcentrated in a PTFE open-capillary, the inner surface of which was previously treated with sodium hydroxide solution to make it negatively charged and thus to provide a medium for the adsorption of the iron complex on it. The concentration of iron were multiplied to more than 5 times by this preconcentration process, leading to a remarkable lowering of detection limit. Under the specified condition, those commoly co-existing metal ions did not form electrically charged complexes with PE·PAR, and were separated from the iron complex, thus improving the selectivity to a great extent. Based on these facts, a design of a FI-system for the photometric determination of traces of iron with in-line open-capillary preconcentration was given. It has been used in the analysis of water samples, giving recoveries in the range of 95%～98% and RSD′s less than 2.5%. Linearity was found in the range of 0.5～40μg·L~(-1) with a detection limit of 0.03μg·L~(-1).
