Abstract:Mode-division multiplexing passive optical network (MDM-PON) breaks the capacity limitations of the current single-mode fiber PON and it has shown great potential in the next-generation access network. Few-mode erbium-doped fiber amplifier (FM-EDFA) directly determines the power budget and coverage of MDM-PON due to its simultaneous multiple-mode amplification. However, when amplifying the upstream burst-mode signals, a substantial accumulation of high-energy erbium ions occurs during the signal idle time, leading to a gain transient at the instant of signal arrival. This induces optical surges at the leading edge of the signal, significantly impacting transmission quality and potentially causing damage to optical components. To address this issue, we propose a gain-equalized FM-EDFA with gain clamping to amplify downstream and upstream channels. The gain transients caused by burst-mode signals are effectively eliminated by employing continuous downstream signals to serve as saturation signals for maintaining constant inversed erbium ions in the amplifier. Experimental results demonstrate that under gain clamping conditions, the dynamic input range for upstream LP 01 , LP 11a , and LP 11b mode channels is significantly improved, expanding from −30 dBm to −15 dBm. Even with gain clamping applied to the FM-EDFA, the gains for all modes exceed 18.5 dB, and the differential modal gain (DMG) is less than 0.5 dB. Furthermore, using the gain-clamped FM-EDFA in burst mode, the bit error rate (BER) of mode channels with the same receiver sensitivity is significantly improved by one order of magnitude. Therefore, the proposed gain-equalized FM-EDFA with gain clamping effectively mitigates gain transients, contributing to the high stability of MDM-PONs.
