Abstract:A physical tumor tapered dispersive laser therapy system, which mainly comprises a laser (1), a transmission fiber (2), a tapered dispersion laser therapy head (3) and a sleeve (4). Wherein, the laser therapy head (3) is a bare fiber core with a tapered and grinded surface. The utility model can effectively transform linear laser output by the fiber into upwards tapered laser, thus taking a shape of 'lamp shade' to radiate physical tumor tissues. In addition, it is unnecessary to pierce therapy head deep into the tumor. Tumor tissue intrusion can be reduced by radiating tumor edges. The utility model can not only enlarge thermal therapy scope and reduce radiation time but also avoid injuring blood vessels and other key structures out of the thermal therapy zone. With rational and novel structural design, the utility model is suitable for all shadow and deep physical tumor therapy.
A Fiber-Optic Thermal Source For Laser Surgery Applications

Abstract:A novel fiber-optic thermal source, consisting of a Nd3+ doped fiber tip and a pure YAG crystal fiber that grown by LHPG(Laser heated pedestal growth) method, had been studied for laser surgery applications. Pumping by a CuBr laser, the thermal source generated temperature as high as 520 degreesC with stability of better than 4% (absolute temperature), the thermal response of the thermal source is about 3 seconds, and the temperature can be controlled by the input laser power. Experimental results show that, the fiber-optic thermal source is promising for laser surgery applications, and is expected to avoid overheating that likely to happen in direct laser tissue interactions.

Abstract:In the paper,We put forward to a sort of hollow beam which is based on intracavity transformation.The matrix eigenvalues method is used to analyze and calculate the laser cavity with diffraction optical elements.We can obtain hollow laser beam by controlling the diffraction function parameters.Also the hollow beam has been realized in solid laser by designing the diffraction optical elements of laser cavity.

Abstract:Diagnostic and therapeutic illumination on internal organs and tissues with high controllability and adaptability in terms of spectrum, area, depth, and intensity remains a major challenge. Here, we present a flexible, biodegradable photonic device called iCarP with a micrometer scale air gap between a refractive polyester patch and the embedded removable tapered optical fiber. ICarP combines the advantages of light diffraction by the tapered optical fiber, dual refractions in the air gap, and reflection inside the patch to obtain a bulb-like illumination, guiding light towards target tissue. We show that iCarP achieves large area, high intensity, wide spectrum, continuous or pulsatile, deeply penetrating illumination without puncturing the target tissues and demonstrate that it supports phototherapies with different photosensitizers. We find that the photonic device is compatible with thoracoscopy-based minimally invasive implantation onto beating hearts. These initial results show that iCarP could be a safe, precise and widely applicable device suitable for internal organs and tissue illumination and associated diagnosis and therapy.

Abstract:Ion beam therapy for cancer has proven to be a successful clinical approach, affording as good a cure as surgery and a higher quality of life. However, the ion beam therapy installation is large and expensive, limiting its availability for public benefit. One of the hurdles is to make the accelerator more compact on the basis of conventional technology. Laser acceleration of ions represents a rapidly developing young field. The prevailing acceleration mechanism (known as target normal sheath acceleration, TNSA), however, shows severe limitations in some key elements. We now witness that a new regime of coherent acceleration of ions by laser (CAIL) has been studied to overcome many of these problems and accelerate protons and carbon ions to high energies with higher efficiencies. Emerging scaling laws indicate possible realization of an ion therapy facility with compact, cost-efficient lasers. Furthermore, dense particle bunches may allow the use of much higher collective fields, reducing the size of beam transport and dump systems. Though ultimate realization of a laser-driven medical facility may take many years, the field is developing fast with many conceptual innovations and technical progress.

Abstract:Laser-induced thermotherapy (LITT), i. e. tissue destruction induced by a local increase of temperature by means of laser light energy transmission, has been frequently used for minimally invasive treatments of various diseases such as benign thyroid nodules and liver cancer. The emerging photoacoustic (PA) imaging, when integrated with ultrasound (US), could contribute to LITT procedure. PA can enable a good visualization of percutaneous apparatus deep inside tissue and, therefore, can offer accurate guidance of the optical fibers to the target tissue. Our initial experiment demonstrated that, by picking the strong photoacoustic signals generated at the tips of optical fibers as a needle, the trajectory and position of the fibers could be visualized clearly using a commercial available US unit. When working the conventional US Bscan mode, the fibers disappeared when the angle between the fibers and the probe surface was larger than 60 degree; while working on the new PA mode, the fibers could be visualized without any problem even when the angle between the fibers and the probe surface was larger than 75 degree. Moreover, with PA imaging function integrated, the optical fibers positioned into the target tissue, besides delivering optical energy for thermotherapy, can also be used to generate PA signals for on-line evaluation of LITT. Powered by our recently developed PA physio-chemical analysis, PA measurements from the tissue can provide a direct and accurate feedback of the tissue responses to laser ablation, including the changes in not only chemical compositions but also histological microstructures. The initial experiment on the rat liver model has demonstrated the excellent sensitivity of PA imaging to the changes in tissue temperature rise and tissue status (from native to coagulated) when the tissue is treated in vivo with LITT.

Abstract:When an optical ring cavity is designed, the beam radii at some special positions, especially at the beam waists are very interested in, since the gain mediums, nonlinear crystals and others important optical elements are generally located at the beam waist. In this paper, we firstly presented a simple method for designing optical ring cavities based on the self-consistency theory and the fact that q parameter is uniquely determined by the waist beam radius and its position. This approach is different from ABCD method and it no longer requires cumbersome calculation. The calculations of designing optical ring cavities are simplified because q parameter only has imaginary part at beam waist plane. Moreover, designing the resonant cavity through the calculation of beam waist radii and their position has great practical significance, because it is very easy to adjust the waist radii and the positions at the important optical elements. We employed this method to design an end-pumped six-mirror ring cavity continuous-wave passively mode locked laser. The experiment of a highly stabilized continuous-wave mode locked (CWML) laser was investigated and the results coincided with the theoretical studies very well. The investigation results show that the simple method can be used to design optical ring cavities conveniently, intuitively and efficiently.

Abstract:Beyond the implementation of the photoacoustic effect to photoacoustic imaging and laser ultrasonics, this study demonstrates a novel application of the photoacoustic effect for high-precision cavitation treatment of tissue using laser-induced focused ultrasound. The focused ultrasound is generated by pulsed optical excitation of an efficient photoacoustic film coated on a concave surface, and its amplitude is high enough to produce controllable microcavitation within the focal region (lateral focus <100 µm). Such microcavitation is used to cut or ablate soft tissue in a highly precise manner. This work demonstrates precise cutting of tissue-mimicking gels as well as accurate ablation of gels and animal eye tissues.
High-Precision Implant Cavity Fabrication Using Femtosecond Lasers

Abstract:Objective: This study aims to enhance the precision of implant cavity preparation, addressing a notable challenge in the current state of the field by utilizing femtosecond lasers. Background: The application of femtosecond lasers in implant cavity preparation heralds a noninvasive and efficient technique, characterized by diminished thermal damage and high biocompatibility. Despite these promising attributes, the realization of precise cavity preparation remains a significant challenge in the contemporary domain. Materials and Methods: Our research group devised a specialized femtosecond laser microsurgery robotic system tailored for sophisticated implant cavity preparation. This system facilitated the meticulous analysis of sheep shank bone samples, enabling precise three-dimensional cutting. The analysis included an extensive examination of ablation effects, using a laser scanning microscope and VK Analyzer software. This investigation spanned the phases of laser flux calibration and experimental validation, offering a critical evaluation of the automated preparation process. Results: The study delineated that at the focus position of our custom-made oral clinical femtosecond laser microsurgery robotic system, the laser spot diameter is 75.69 μm, and ascertained the ablation threshold for sheep shank cortical bone to be 1.47 J/cm2. Utilizing low laser flux with minimal ablation craters overlap compromised the sidewall precision of the implant cavity, whereas employing high laser flux with extensive ablation craters overlap resulted in an enlarged ablation angle. At a laser energy setting of 2.2362 J/cm2 and a 50% ablation crater overlap, an implant cavity was successfully crafted featuring a top diameter of 4.41 mm, a bottom diameter of 3.98 mm, and a depth of 3 mm, devoid of any adverse thermal effects such as cracking or carbonization. Conclusions: The oral clinical femtosecond laser microsurgery robotic system can achieve automated and precise implant cavity preparation. This advancement promotes the broader application of femtosecond lasers in the field of orthopedics.

Abstract:Ion beam has been used in cancer treatment, and has a unique preferable feature to deposit its main energy inside a human body so that cancer cell could be killed by the ion beam. However, conventional ion accelerator tends to be huge in its size and its cost. In this paper a future intense-laser ion accelerator is proposed to make the ion accelerator compact. An intense femtosecond pulsed laser was employed to accelerate ions. The issues in the laser ion accelerator include the energy efficiency from the laser to the ions, the ion beam collimation, the ion energy spectrum control, the ion beam bunching and the ion particle energy control. In the study particle computer simulations were performed to solve the issues, and each component was designed to control the ion beam quality. When an intense laser illuminates a target, electrons in the target are accelerated and leave from the target; temporarily a strong electric field is formed between the high-energy electrons and the target ions, and the target ions are accelerated. The energy efficiency from the laser to ions was improved by using a solid target with a fine sub-wavelength structure or by a near-critical density gas plasma. The ion beam collimation was realized by holes behind the solid target. The control of the ion energy spectrum and the ion particle energy, and the ion beam bunching were successfully realized by a multi-stage laser-target interaction. The present study proposed a novel concept for a future compact laser ion accelerator, based on each component study required to control the ion beam quality and parameters.

Abstract:Femtosecond laser microsurgery has become an advanced method for clinical procedures and biological research. The tissue treated by femtosecond laser can become highly fluorescent, indicating the formation of new fluorescent compounds that can naturally label the treated tissue site. We systematically characterized the fluorescence signals produced by femtosecond laser ablation in biological tissues in vivo. Our findings showed that they possess unique fluorescence properties and can be clearly differentiated from endogenous signals and major fluorescent proteins. We further demonstrated that the new fluorescent compounds can be used as in vivo labelling agent for biological imaging and guided laser microsurgery.

Abstract:In order to achieve uniform laser illumination with small aperture diameter and large field Angle,study laser active illumination <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://system.An" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> aspheric mirror combined with a composite ellipsoidal cavity is designed to achieve uniform illumination in this paper.Through an aspheric mirror,the fundamental mode of Gaussian beam is shaped into double Gaussian radiation and Flat-top radiation.The double Gaussian radiation rays are reflected again by the complex ellipsoidal cavity and decomposed into equal radiation flux,which is superimposed with the through Flat-top radiation rays to form a uniform distribution.The parameters of the complex ellipsoidal cavity are obtained by mapping equalization algorithm.After the superposition of the aspherical transmission Flat-top shaping and the composite ellipsoidal cavity secondary reflection shaping,the aperture is 29.7mm,whose aperture angle is 84.0 degrees,and the uniformity is 92.7% with 2m distance and 3.6m diameter.The optimization of uniformity is influenced by three factors:RMS,transmission and reflection power density ratio MT/R and transmission and reflection overlap degree.RMS and MT/R determine the design effect of the composite ellipsoidal cavity, which depends on the maximum reflection Angle and transmission <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://Angle.MT/R" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> is negatively correlated with the maximum reflection of Angle,and RMS is positively correlated with the transmission Angle.When the maximum reflection Angle is set to 32.0 degrees and the transmission Angle to 8.0 degrees,the minimum root-mean-square focusing radius is 108.6um,and the minimum effective transmission reflection power density ratio is 1.07.The degree overlap of transmission and reflection directly affects the uniformity of the target plane.The degree of transmission and reflection is adjusted by setting an adjustment factor.When the adjustment factor is 0.9,the uniformity of the target plane reaches the maximum.

Abstract:Recent advances in laser technology have made proton (light ion) acceleration possible using laser-induced plasmas. In this work, we report our work for the last few years on the investigation of a new proton therapy system for radiation oncology, which employs laser-accelerated protons. If successfully developed, the new system will be compact, cost-effective, and capable of delivering energy-and intensity-modulated proton therapy (EIMPT). We have focused our research on three major aspects: (1) target design for laser-proton acceleration, (2) system design for particle/energy selection and beam collimation, and (3) dosimetric studies on the use of laser-accelerated protons for cancer therapy. We have performed particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations to investigate optimal target configurations for proton/ion acceleration. We also performed Monte Carlo simulations to study the beam characteristics and the feasibility of using such beams for cancer treatment. Since laser-accelerated protons have broad energy and angular distributions, which are not suitable for radiotherapy applications directly, we have designed a compact particle selection and beam collimating system for EIMPT beam delivery. We also proposed a new gantry design to make the whole system compact to retrofit existing linac vaults. We have compared Monte Carlo calculated dose distributions using X-ray IMRT and laser-proton EIMPT. Our results show that EIMPT using laser protons produces superior target coverage and much reduced critical structure dose and integral dose compared to X-ray IMRT.

Design and Realization of Oral Cavity Endoscope System

Abstract:An oral cavity endoscope was designed to meet the practical needs of dentistry. The whole system was composed of imaging system, illuminating system, image display and processing system. The system has the function of micro-amplification, and the brightness and color temperature is adjustable. In this paper, optics software was used to design and optimize the optics imaging system, and gave out the aberration curve. The illumination system was constructed. In the ending of the papers, the oral cavity endoscope was used to test two teeth model. The system resolution is higher than 100 lp/mm and the image is clear. The details of tooth surface can be observed. The experiment results show that the system could meet the requirements of dental medical application.

Monte Carlo method was used to simulate the penetrated ion energy and path to conform the feasibility. The results showed the design is successful.

Abstract:This paper reviews our recent developments of ultrathin fiber-optic endomicroscopy technologies for transforming high-resolution noninvasive optical imaging techniques to in vivo and clinical applications such as early disease detection and guidance of interventions. Specifically we describe an all-fiber-optic scanning endomicroscopy technology, which miniaturizes a conventional bench-top scanning laser microscope down to a flexible fiber-optic probe of a small footprint (i.e. similar to 2-2.5 mm in diameter), capable of performing two-photon fluorescence and second harmonic generation microscopy in real time. This technology aims to enable real-time visualization of histology in situ without the need for tissue removal. We will also present a balloon OCT endoscopy technology which permits high-resolution 3D imaging of the entire esophagus for detection of neoplasia, guidance of biopsy and assessment of therapeutic outcome. In addition we will discuss the development of functional polymeric fluorescent nanocapsules, which use only FAD approved materials and potentially enable fast track clinical translation of optical molecular imaging and targeted therapy.

Abstract:Abstract We put forward a new design of a compact beam transport system for intense laser-driven proton therapy, where instead of using conventional pulsed solenoids, our design relies on a helical coil irradiated by a nanosecond laser pulse to generate strong magnetic fields for focusing protons. A pair of dipole magnets and apertures are employed to further filter protons with large divergences and low energies. Our numerical studies combine particle-in-cell simulations for laser-plasma interaction to generate high-energy monoenergetic proton beams, finite element analysis for evaluating the magnetic field distribution inside the coil, and Monte-Carlo simulations for beam transport and energy deposition. Our results show that with this design, a spread-out Bragg peak in a range of several centimeters to a deep-seated tumor with a dose of approximately 16.5 cGy and fluctuation around 2% can be achieved. The instantaneous dose rate reaches up to 109 Gy/s, holding the potential for future FLASH radiotherapy research.
