Abstract:Visible Light Communication (VLC) is a new mode that combines lighting and communication. Because it can meet the needs of large capacity and ultra-high transmission rate, effective analysis of indoor visible light channel characteristics can better provide VLC systems. We provide a reference basis for the design, and VLC technology using Light Emitting Diode (LED) as the light source has become one of the research hotspots in the field of wireless communications. To solve the problems of existing indoor visible light channel modeling methods such as being ideal, high complexity, or poor in versatility, this paper researches indoor visible light communication channel modeling and related theories and methods, using rays with strong scene adaptability. Based on the tracking method, starting from the need to reduce computational complexity and improve tracking accuracy, a channel modeling method for indoor visible light communication is designed. We propose a high-precision indoor visible light communication channel modeling method that combines central ray tubes and bidirectional ray tracing. We use the forward ray tracing method to model indoor visible light communication channels. The simulation experimental results show that the channel modeling method proposed in this article can effectively improve modeling efficiency.

Abstract:Visible light communication (VLC) allows the dual use of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) for wireless communication purposes in addition to their primary purpose of illumination. As in any other communication system, realistic channel modelling is a key for VLC system design, analysis and testing. In this paper, we present a comprehensive survey of indoor VLC channel models. In order to set the background, we start with an overview of infrared (IR) channel modelling, which has received much attention in the past, and highlight the differences between visible and IR optical bands. In the light of these, we present a comparative discussion of existing VLC channel modelling studies and point out the relevant advantages and disadvantages. Then, we provide a detailed description of a site-specific channel modelling approach based on non-sequential ray tracing that precisely captures the optical propagation characteristics of a given indoor environment. We further present channel models for representative deployment scenarios developed through this approach that were adopted by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (IEEE) as reference channel models. Finally, we consider mobile VLC scenarios and investigate the effect of receiver location and rotation for a mobile indoor user. This article is part of the theme issue 'Optical wireless communication'.

Abstract:Integration of digital twin (DT) and wireless channel provides new solution of channel modeling and simulation, and can assist to design, optimize and evaluate intelligent wireless communication system and networks. With DT channel modeling, the generated channel data can be closer to realistic channel measurements without requiring a prior channel model, and amount of channel data can be significantly increased. Artificial intelligence (AI) based modeling approach shows outstanding performance to solve such problems. In this work, a channel modeling method based on generative adversarial networks is proposed for DT channel, which can generate identical statistical distribution with measured channel. Model validation is conducted by comparing DT channel characteristics with measurements, and results show that DT channel leads to fairly good agreement with measured channel. Finally, a link-layer simulation is implemented based on DT channel. It is found that the proposed DT channel model can be well used to conduct link-layer simulation and its performance is comparable to using measurement data. The observations and results can facilitate the development of DT channel modeling and provide new thoughts for DT channel applications, as well as improving the performance and reliability of intelligent communication networking.

Abstract:The visible light communication (VLC) technology has attracted much attention in the research of the sixth generation (6G) communication systems. In this paper, a novel three dimensional (3D) space-time-frequency non-stationary geometry-based stochastic model (GBSM) is proposed for indoor VLC channels. The proposed VLC GBSM can capture unique indoor VLC channel characteristics such as the space-time-frequency non-stationarity caused by large light-emitting diode (LED) arrays in indoor scenarios, long travelling paths, and large bandwidths of visible light waves, respectively. In addition, the proposed model can support special radiation patterns of LEDs, 3D translational and rotational motions of the optical receiver (Rx), and can be applied to angle diversity receivers (ADRs). Key channel properties are simulated and analyzed, including the space-time-frequency correlation function (STFCF), received power, root mean square (RMS) delay spread, and path loss (PL). Simulation results verify the space-time-frequency non-stationarity in indoor VLC channels. Finally, the accuracy and practicality of the proposed model are validated by comparing the simulation result of channel 3dB bandwidth with the existing measurement data. The proposed channel model will play a supporting role in the design of future 6G VLC systems.

Abstract:Visible light communication (VLC) has attracted much attention in the research of sixth-generation (6G) systems. Furthermore, channel modeling is the foundation for designing efficient and robust VLC systems. In this paper, we present extensive VLC channel measurement campaigns in indoor environments, i.e., an office and a corridor. Based on the measured data, the large-scale fading characteristics and multipath-related characteristics, including omnidirectional optical path loss (OPL), K-factor, power angular spectrum (PAS), angle spread (AS), and clustering characteristics, are analyzed and modeled through a statistical method. Based on the extracted statistics of the above-mentioned channel characteristics, we propose a statistical spatial channel model (SSCM) capable of modeling multipath in the spatial domain. Furthermore, the simulated statistics of the proposed model are compared with the measured statistics. For instance, in the office, the simulated path loss exponent (PLE) and the measured PLE are 1.96 and 1.97, respectively. And, the simulated medians of AS and measured medians of AS are 25.94° and 24.84°, respectively. Generally, the fact that the simulated results fit well with measured results has demonstrated the accuracy of our SSCM.

Abstract:The non-line-of-sight visible light communications (VLC) is investigated via both the integrating sphere model and the cuboid model, which can significantly improve the VLC mobility. The influences of geometric configurations of the LED light source on the received signal intensity and corresponding impulse broadening are analyzed via ray-tracing Monte Carlo simulations. The present task may be useful for building the future's unified testing criteria of the LED light sources both in visible light communications and general indoor lighting.

Abstract:Aside from ambient light noise, shot noise, and linear/nonlinear effects, strong low-frequency noise (LFN) severely affects the signal quality in LED-based visible light communication (VLC) systems, which hinders the implementation of data-driven end-to-end (E2E) deep learning approaches in real LED-VLC systems. We present a deep learning-based autoencoder to deal with this challenge. A novel modeling strategy is proposed to bypass the influence of the LFN and other low signal-to-noise ratio data when training the channel model of our E2E framework. The deep learning-based autoencoder then embeds the differentiable channel model and learns to combat the majority of channel impairments. In the E2E LED-VLC experiment, 1.875 Gbps transmission is achieved under the 7% HD-FEC threshold, 0.325 Gbps faster than the baseline. The E2E framework is robust to signal bias and amplitude variations, implying dimming support in the indoor environment.

Abstract:This paper proposes an indoor visible light communication (VLC) system with multiple transmitters and receivers. Due to diffusivity of LED light beams, photodiode receive signals from many directions. We use one concave and one convex lens as optical antenna, and obtain the optimal lens structure by optimizing which corresponds to the minimum condition number of channel gain matrix. In this way the light emitted by different LED can be separated well from each other then minimize signal interference. However, interference increases in the case of system deviation, so we explore the system mobility. Then subsequent signal processing is carried out, including signal combining and successive interference cancellation (SIC). We combine the same signal received by different receivers to improve signal to interference noise ratio (SINR). And SIC can effectively restore interference and eliminate its impact. The simulation results show that channel capacity can be increased by more than 5 times and up to 20 times under the condition of receiver and transmitter alignment. In the case of movement, channel capacity can also be increased by about 4 times on average. Moreover, the mobile range of system is also significantly expanded.

Abstract:Visible light communication (VLC) is one of the key technologies for the sixth generation (6G) to support the connection and throughput of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). Furthermore, VLC channel modeling is the foundation for designing efficient and robust VLC systems. In this paper, the ray-tracing simulation method is adopted to investigate the VLC channel in IIoT scenarios. The main contributions of this paper are divided into three aspects. Firstly, based on the simulated data, large-scale fading and multipath-related characteristics, including the channel impulse response (CIR), optical path loss (OPL), delay spread (DS), and angular spread (AS), are analyzed and modeled through the distance-dependent and statistical distribution models. The modeling results indicate that the channel characteristics under the single transmitter (TX) are proportional to the propagation distance. It is also found that the degree of time domain and spatial domain dispersion is higher than that in the typical rooms (conference room and corridor). Secondly, the density of surrounding objects and the effects of user heights on these channel characteristics are also investigated. Through the analysis, it can be observed that the denser objects can contribute to the smaller OPL and the larger RMS DS under the single TX case. Furthermore, due to the blocking effect of surrounding objects, the larger OPL and the smaller RMS DS can be observed at the receiver with a low height. Thirdly, due to the distance dependence of the channel characteristics and large time-domain dispersion, the link adaption method is further proposed to optimize the multipath interference problem. This method combines a luminary adaptive selection and delay adaption technique. Then, the performance of the link adaption method is verified from four aspects through simulation, including the signal-to-noise (SNR), the RMS DS, the CIRs, and the bit-error rate (BER) of a direct-current-biased optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DCO-OFDM) system. The verification results indicate that our proposed method has a significant optimization for multipath interference.

Abstract:Channel estimation is a key technology in indoor wireless visible light communications (VLCs). Using the training sequence (TS), this paper investigates the channel estimation in indoor wireless visible light communications. Based on the propagation and signal modulation characteristics of visible light, a link model for the indoor wireless visible light communications is established. Using the model, three channel estimation methods, i.e., the correlation method, the least square (LS) method and the minimum mean square error (MMSE) method, are proposed. Moreover, the performances of the proposed three methods are evaluated by computer simulation. The results show that the performance of the correlation method is the worst, the LS method is suitable for higher signal to noise ratio (SNR), and the MMSE method obtains the best performance at the expense of highest complexity.

Abstract:An improved recursive channel model based on Barry's is proposed by introducing the wiring topology of light source for indoor visible light communication systems, including the path of communication access point to LED array access point and LED array access point to LED. Theoretical analysis and simulation results indicate that, the improved model presented in this paper can be used to better analyze the ISI phenomenon of an indoor visible light communication system. And mitigation strategies based on the formula of an improved channel model are proposed for ISI which provides a valuable reference for the actual application of a VLC system. © 2013 Asian Network for Scientific Information.

Abstract:End-to-end systems have been introduced to address the issue of independent signal processing module design in traditional communication systems, which prevents achieving global system optimization. However, research on indoor end-to-end Visible Light Communication (VLC) systems remains limited, especially regarding the channel modeling of high-speed, high-capacity Direct Current-biased Optical Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (DCO-OFDM) systems. This paper proposes three channel modeling methods for end-to-end DCO-OFDM VLC systems. The accuracy of the proposed methods is demonstrated through R-Square model fitting performance and data distribution analysis. The effectiveness of the proposed channel modeling methods is further validated by comparing the bit error rate (BER) performance of traditional receivers and existing deep learning (DL)-based receivers. The results show that the proposed methods can effectively mitigate both linear and nonlinear distortions. By employing these channel modeling methods, communication systems can reduce the spectral occupancy of pilot signals, thereby significantly lowering the complexity of traditional channel estimation methods. Thus, these methods are suitable for use in end-to-end VLC communication systems.

Abstract:The increasing complexity on channel modeling and the cost on collecting plenty of high-quality wireless channel data have become the main bottlenecks of developing deep learning (DL) based wireless communications. In this letter, a DL-based channel modeling and generating approach namely ChannelGAN is proposed. Specifically, the ChannelGAN is designed on a small set of 3rd generation partnerships project (3GPP) link-level multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel. Moreover, two evaluation mechanisms including i) power comparison from the perspective of delay and antenna domain and ii) cross validation are implemented where the power comparison proves the consistency between the modeled fake channel and real channel, and the cross validation verifies the effectiveness and availability of the generated fake channel for supporting related DL-based channel state information (CSI) feedback.

Abstract:To support the development of intelligent optical networks, accurate modeling of the physical layer is crucial. Digital twin (DT) modeling, which relies on continuous learning with real-time data, provides a new paradigm to build a virtual replica of the physical layer with a significant improvement in accuracy and reliability. In addition, DT models will be able to forecast future change by analyzing historical data. In this tutorial, we introduce and discuss three key technologies, including modeling, telemetry, and self-learning, to build a DT for optical networks. The principles and progress of these technologies on major impairments that affect the quality of transmission are presented, and a discussion on the remaining challenges and future research directions is provided.

Abstract:Visible light communication (VLC) has the potential to supplement the growing demand for wireless connectivity. In order to realise the full potential of VLC, channel models are required Discrete channel models based on semi-hidden Markov models (Fritchman model) for indoor VLC using low data rate LEDs are presented. Each channel considered includes background noise and differing types of interference from fluorescent lights and pulse-width modulated (PWM) LEDs, which could be part of an indoor smart lighting system. Models were developed based on experimental error sequences from a VLC system using an on-off keying (OOK) modulation scheme. The error sequences were input into the Baum-Welch algorithm to determine the model parameters by expectation maximisation. Simulated error sequences generated by the models are compared to and, in most cases, perform better than simpler models with a single bit error rate. The models closely approximate the experimental errors sequences in terms of error distribution. The models performed better in channels where there is less interference. It was also found that periodic errors were introduced as a results of the PWM modulated smart lighting LEDs. These models have use for designing error control codes and simulating indoor VLC environments with different types of interference.

Abstract:An actual link model for the indoor Visible Light Communication( VLC) system is established. For its channel impulse response,the Least Square( LS) method and the Minimum Mean Square Error( MMSE) method are presented. Moreover,the performances of two different methods by computer simulation are compared. At last,the number of taps and the length of training sequence affect for the channel estimation is analyzed. It is shown that,in the same SNR,MMSE performance is better than LS whereas higher complexity is taken. The LS method is suitable for higher SNR. Furthermore,the more taps and larger length of training sequence,the better performance of channel estimation and more computing required.

Abstract:Inspired by the advanced integrated sensing and communication (ISAC), in this Letter, we explore the non-line-of-sight (NLoS) optical channels formed by reflections from the ground or objects to establish an integrated channel model for simultaneous communication and sensing. The integrated channel model can, on the one hand, perceive the changes in the surrounding environment and, on the other hand, determine whether these changes positively or negatively affect the quality of communication simultaneously. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed model, from sensing, we analyze the impact of various floor materials and visible light communication (VLC) users on the integrated channel; from communication, we characterize the influence of perceived environmental changes on communication performance by calculating throughput. Experimental results confirm the capability of the derived model, which can support the design and deployment of VL-based ISAC networks.

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel two tributaries heterogeneous neural network (TTHnet) based channel emulator, which is suitable for both estimating single-carrier and multi-carrier modulated channels of underwater visible light communication (UVLC). Compared to traditional neural networks, the TTHnet channel emulator has only 1932 trainable parameters, which is only 0.8% of multilayer perceptron (MLP) based channel emulator and 1% of a convolutional neural network (CNN) based channel emulator. Furthermore, it provides a more accurate estimation of the UVLC channel and greater interpretability than MLP and CNN. The experiments in this paper use carrier-less amplitude/phase modulation (CAP) and discrete multi-tone modulation (DMT) as representative examples of single-carrier and multi-carrier modulation, respectively. The experiment proves that the TTHnet based channel emulator could effectively emulate the channel response of UVLC systems both in time and frequency domain. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that the single-carrier and multi-carrier modulated UVLC channel is emulated by the deep neural networks based channel emulator, which will effectively accelerate the research progress of UVLC and reduce research costs of UVLC systems.
Machine Learning Based Channel Modeling for Vehicular Visible Light Communication

Abstract:Optical Wireless Communication (OWC) propagation channel characterization plays a key role on the design and performance analysis of Vehicular Visible Light Communication (VVLC) systems. Current OWC channel models based on deterministic and stochastic methods, fail to address mobility induced ambient light, optical turbulence and road reflection effects on channel characterization. Therefore, alternative machine learning (ML) based schemes, considering ambient light, optical turbulence, road reflection effects in addition to intervehicular distance and geometry, are proposed to obtain accurate VVLC channel loss and channel frequency response (CFR). This work demonstrates synthesis of ML based VVLC channel model frameworks through multi layer perceptron feed-forward neural network (MLP), radial basis function neural network (RBF-NN) and Random Forest ensemble learning algorithms. Predictor and response variables, collected through practical road measurements, are employed to train and validate proposed models for various conditions. Additionally, the importance of different predictor variables on channel loss and CFR is assessed, normalized importance of features for measured VVLC channel is introduced. We show that RBF-NN, Random Forest and MLP based models yield more accurate channel loss estimations with 3.53 dB, 3.81 dB, 3.95 dB root mean square error (RMSE), respectively, when compared to fitting curve based VVLC channel model with 7 dB RMSE. Moreover, RBF-NN and MLP models are demonstrated to predict VVLC CFR with respect to distance, ambient light and receiver inclination angle predictor variables with 3.78 dB and 3.60 dB RMSE respectively.
