Abstract:Visible light communication (VLC) has attracted much attention in the research of sixth-generation (6G) systems. Furthermore, channel modeling is the foundation for designing efficient and robust VLC systems. In this paper, we present extensive VLC channel measurement campaigns in indoor environments, i.e., an office and a corridor. Based on the measured data, the large-scale fading characteristics and multipath-related characteristics, including omnidirectional optical path loss (OPL), K-factor, power angular spectrum (PAS), angle spread (AS), and clustering characteristics, are analyzed and modeled through a statistical method. Based on the extracted statistics of the above-mentioned channel characteristics, we propose a statistical spatial channel model (SSCM) capable of modeling multipath in the spatial domain. Furthermore, the simulated statistics of the proposed model are compared with the measured statistics. For instance, in the office, the simulated path loss exponent (PLE) and the measured PLE are 1.96 and 1.97, respectively. And, the simulated medians of AS and measured medians of AS are 25.94° and 24.84°, respectively. Generally, the fact that the simulated results fit well with measured results has demonstrated the accuracy of our SSCM.

VICO: A Framework for Configuring Indoor Visible Light Communication Networks

Abstract:Visible light communications (VLC) are gaining popularity and may provide an alternative means of communications in indoor settings. However, to date, there is very little research on the deployment or higher layer protocol design for VLC. In this paper, we first perform channel measurements using a physical layer testbed in the visible light band to understand its physical layer characteristics. Our measurements suggest that in order to increase data rates with VLC (1) the beam width of a communicating link can be shrunk, and (2) the transmission beam can be tuned to point towards the target recipient. We then perform Matlab simulations to verify that the human eye is able to accommodate the changes brought by shrinking a beam or by tuning the beam direction appropriately. As our main contribution, we then design a configuration framework for a VLC indoor local area network, which we call VICO; we leverage the above features towards achieving the highest throughput while maintaining fairness. VICO first tunes the beamwidths and pointing angles of the transmitters to configurations that provide the highest throughput for each client. It then tries to schedule transmissions while accounting for conflicts and the VLC PHY characteristics. Finally, it opportunistically tunes the idle LEDs to reinforce existing transmissions to increase throughput to the extent possible. We perform extensive simulations to demonstrate the effectiveness of VICO. We find that VICO provides as much as 5-fold increase in throughput compared to a simple scheduler that does not exploit the possible variations in beamwidth or beam-angle.
A Novel Visible Light Communication Channel Compensation and Reconstruction Algorithm for Linear Decomposed CPM Signals

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate a visible light communication (VLC) system using continuous phase modulation (CPM) and prove its advantage in energy efficiency over orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) scheme. Furthermore, to ensure the feasibility of broadband communications in indoor optical multipath environments, we propose algorithms including linear decomposition-based channel compensation to combat the inter-symbol-interference (ISI) and correlation matrix-based highly power-efficient CPM signal reconstruction to recover the original CPM signal without multipath effects. Additionally, in the signal reconstruction algorithm, a condition-enhanced method is proposed to solve the condition number problem of correlation matrix. The algorithms are verified and evaluated in terms of the normalized mean squared error (NMSE) simulation and bit error rate (BER) experiments. The power efficiency, the fading compensation character promote the proposed CPM transceiver to be a practical VLC candidate.

Abstract:Visible light communication (VLC) is a highly promising complement to conventional wireless communication for local-area networking in future 6G. However, the extra electro-optical and photoelectric conversions in VLC systems usually introduce exceeding complexity to communication channels, in particular severe nonlinearities. Artificial intelligence (AI) techniques are investigated to overcome the unique challenges in VLC, whereas considerable obstacles are found in practical VLC systems applied with intelligent learning approaches. In this paper, we present a comprehensive study of the intelligent physical and network layer technologies for AI-empowered intelligent VLC (IVLC). We first depict a full model of the visible light channel and discuss its main challenges. The advantages and disadvantages of machine learning in VLC are discussed and analyzed by simulation. We then present a detailed overview of advances in intelligent physical layers, including optimal coding, channel emulator, MIMO, channel equalization, and optimal decision. Finally, we envision the prospects of IVLC in both the intelligent physical and network layers. This article lays out a roadmap for developing machine learning-based intelligent visible light communication in 6G.

Abstract:This paper proposes an indoor visible light communication (VLC) system with multiple transmitters and receivers. Due to diffusivity of LED light beams, photodiode receive signals from many directions. We use one concave and one convex lens as optical antenna, and obtain the optimal lens structure by optimizing which corresponds to the minimum condition number of channel gain matrix. In this way the light emitted by different LED can be separated well from each other then minimize signal interference. However, interference increases in the case of system deviation, so we explore the system mobility. Then subsequent signal processing is carried out, including signal combining and successive interference cancellation (SIC). We combine the same signal received by different receivers to improve signal to interference noise ratio (SINR). And SIC can effectively restore interference and eliminate its impact. The simulation results show that channel capacity can be increased by more than 5 times and up to 20 times under the condition of receiver and transmitter alignment. In the case of movement, channel capacity can also be increased by about 4 times on average. Moreover, the mobile range of system is also significantly expanded.

Abstract:In the envisioned 6G internet of things (IoT), visible light communication (VLC) has emerged as one promising candidate to mitigate the frequency spectrum crisis. However, when working as the access point, VLC has to be connected with the backbone network via other wire communication solutions. Typically, power line communication (PLC) is viewed as an excellent match to VLC, which is capable of providing both a power supply and backbone network connection. Generally, the integration of PLC and VLC is taken into consideration for the above hybrid system for channel characteristics analysis. However, almost all current works focus on hybrid PLC and VLC, based on a conventional Lambertian optical beam configuration, and fail to address the applications of hybrid PLC and VLC based on distinct optical beam configurations. To address this issue, in this paper, the channel characteristics of hybrid PLC and VLC, based on distinct optical beam configurations, are explored and illustrated. Numerical results show that, for a central position of the receiver, compared with an achievable rate of about 194 Mbps for hybrid PLC and VLC with a baseline Lambertian optical beam configuration, the counterparts of a hybrid channel based on Rebel and NSPW optical beams are about 173.4 Mbps and 222.4 Mbps. Moreover, the effect of azimuth rotation is constructed and estimated for hybrid PLC and VLC, adopting a typical rotating asymmetric beam configuration.

Abstract:The visible light communication (VLC) technology has attracted much attention in the research of the sixth generation (6G) communication systems. In this paper, a novel three dimensional (3D) space-time-frequency non-stationary geometry-based stochastic model (GBSM) is proposed for indoor VLC channels. The proposed VLC GBSM can capture unique indoor VLC channel characteristics such as the space-time-frequency non-stationarity caused by large light-emitting diode (LED) arrays in indoor scenarios, long travelling paths, and large bandwidths of visible light waves, respectively. In addition, the proposed model can support special radiation patterns of LEDs, 3D translational and rotational motions of the optical receiver (Rx), and can be applied to angle diversity receivers (ADRs). Key channel properties are simulated and analyzed, including the space-time-frequency correlation function (STFCF), received power, root mean square (RMS) delay spread, and path loss (PL). Simulation results verify the space-time-frequency non-stationarity in indoor VLC channels. Finally, the accuracy and practicality of the proposed model are validated by comparing the simulation result of channel 3dB bandwidth with the existing measurement data. The proposed channel model will play a supporting role in the design of future 6G VLC systems.

Abstract:Visible Light Communication (VLC) is a new mode that combines lighting and communication. Because it can meet the needs of large capacity and ultra-high transmission rate, effective analysis of indoor visible light channel characteristics can better provide VLC systems. We provide a reference basis for the design, and VLC technology using Light Emitting Diode (LED) as the light source has become one of the research hotspots in the field of wireless communications. To solve the problems of existing indoor visible light channel modeling methods such as being ideal, high complexity, or poor in versatility, this paper researches indoor visible light communication channel modeling and related theories and methods, using rays with strong scene adaptability. Based on the tracking method, starting from the need to reduce computational complexity and improve tracking accuracy, a channel modeling method for indoor visible light communication is designed. We propose a high-precision indoor visible light communication channel modeling method that combines central ray tubes and bidirectional ray tracing. We use the forward ray tracing method to model indoor visible light communication channels. The simulation experimental results show that the channel modeling method proposed in this article can effectively improve modeling efficiency.
A Novel VLC Attocell Network Structure Using Superimposed Optical-OFDM.

Abstract:One of the most important adverse effects in indoor visible light communication (VLC) networks is co-channel interference (CCI). In this paper, a new network design based on superimposed optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (O-OFDM) is proposed, which can effectively mitigate the CCI and increase the average spectral efficiency. The proposed structure can also greatly improve the overall system power efficiency while ensuring the indoor lighting quality. The performance of the proposed scheme is analyzed in detail. The signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR), lighting quality, spectral and power efficiency of the system are studied based on the considerations of the important parameters of the network.

Abstract:Recently, visible light communication (VLC) in the industrial Internet of Things has been widely concerned. In these systems, multi-access technologies are always used to eliminate interference between adjacent transmitters, significantly decreasing transmission efficiency. Meanwhile, the attocell boundaries caused by multi-access technologies can also limit communication coverage and lead to frequent receiving switches. To overcome these weaknesses caused by the division of attocell, we design a boundaryless none-attocell VLC system in this paper. In the proposed system, each transmitter uses all available communication resources, and a cubic receiver is adopted to receive in both non-overlapping and overlapping areas. Specifically, we propose a scheme for adaptive signal selection, enabling the receiver to select the recoverable transmitting signals. After that, we introduce an adaptive channel estimation and signal recovery method, which adaptively achieves signal combining and overlapping signal recovery. Our simulations verify the proposed scheme and demonstrate that the proposed system with the adaptive receiving scheme has better error performance and broader communication coverage than the traditional attocell system.

Abstract:The scintillation caused by the atmosphere turbulence and strong background noise from sunlight and other lighting equipment are two main problems in visible light communication (VLC) atmosphere transmission system.In order to overcome the channel fading effect caused by the atmosphere turbulence and the noise interference caused by the strong background light,VLC atmosphere channel with strong background noise is modeled.Diversity receiving technologies are utilized to improve the bit error rate (BER) performance of the system at the same transmitting power.According to the channel model,outdoor long-distance VLC system based on intensity detection pulse position modulation (PPM) in turbulence atmosphere channel using diversity receiving technologies is fimally set up.In our simulation,the system bandwidth is 400 MHz and bit rate is 800 Mb/s.The BER performances of three diversity receiving technologies:maximal ratio combing (MRC),equal gain combing (EGC),selection combing (SC) are also compared.The results show that under the same transmitting power,the improvement of BER performance by MRC is the best,followed by EGC and SC is poor.Taking 7％ forward error correction(FEC) as the BER threshold,the required LED transmitting power is greatly decreased with MRC.Furthermore,with the increase of the number of diversity branches,the BER performance is better.

Abstract:In this paper, vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) array is used to establish gigabitssecond (Gbps) optical uplink, device-to-device (D2D), and Internet-of-thing (IoT) links, as a supplementary for visible light communication (VLC) and ultra-low latency near-field communication in a typical indoor scenario. The mathematical model based on a modified Monte-Carlo ray-tracing (MMCR) algorithm for VCSEL-based optical wireless communication (OWC) is presented, which takes into account both accuracy and time complexity for the calculation of the channel characteristics including power distribution, impulse response, error analysis, and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Simulation firstly takes a global approach to the optical uplink lens design method, compared between Lambertian and Gaussian sources, and then extended six typical line-of-sight (LOS) or non-line-of-sight (NLOS) VCSEL-based OWC models. For demonstration, we adopted a 940-nm VCSEL array and 850-nm single-pixel VCSEL to establish LOS and NLOS systems after measuring the optics-electronics and bandwidth characteristics, respectively. Furthermore, multiple multi-carrier schemes are adopted to improve the OWC performance system based on a 940-nm VCSEL array including uniform-loading orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), channel-coded OFDM, bit-loading power-allocation OFDM, and OFDM access (OFDMA). Results show that OFDM can effectively decrease the inter-symbol interference (ISI) of the indoor channel and increase the data rate, and the bit power-loading method achieves the highest 7.2 Gbps transmission with the bit error rate (BER) within the forward error correction (FEC). All the theoretical and experimental results, for the first time, provide a comprehensive design and optimizing process of VCSEL-based indoor high-capacity OWC systems for future optical uplink, D2D, and IoT applications.

Modeling and Performance Study of Vehicle-to-Infrastructure Visible Light Communication System for Mountain Roads

Abstract:Visible light communication (VLC) is considered to be a promising technology for realizing intelligent transportation systems (ITSs) and solving traffic safety problems. Due to the complex and changing environment and the influence of weather and other aspects, there are many problems in channel modeling and performance analysis of vehicular VLC. Unlike existing studies, this study proposes a practical vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) VLC propagation model for a typical mountain road. The model consists of both line-of-sight (LOS) and non-line-of-sight (NLOS) links. In the proposed model, the effects of vehicle mobility and weather conditions are considered. To analyze the impact of the considered propagation characteristics on the system, closed-form expressions for several performance metrics were derived, including average path loss, received power, channel capacity, and outage probability. Furthermore, to verify the accuracy of the derived theoretical expressions, simulation results were presented and analyzed in detail. The results indicate that, considering the LOS link and when the vehicle is 50 m away from the infrastructure, the difference in channel gain between moderate fog and dense fog versus clear weather conditions is 1.8 dB and 3 dB, respectively. In addition, the maximum difference in total received optical power between dense fog conditions and clear weather conditions can reach 76.2%. Moreover, under clear weather conditions, the channel capacity when vehicles are 40 m away from infrastructure is about 98.9% lower than when they are 10 m away. Additionally, the outage probability shows a high correlation with the threshold data transmission rate. Therefore, the considered propagation characteristics have a significant impact on the performance of V2I-VLC.

Abstract:Visible light communication (VLC) is an advanced, highly developed optical wireless communication (OWC) technology that can simultaneously provide lighting and high-speed wireless data transmission. A VLC system has several key advantages: ultra-high data rate, secure communication channels, and a lack of interference from electromagnetic (EM) waves, which enable a wide range of applications. Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) have been considered the optimal choice for VLC systems since they can provide excellent illumination performance. However, the quantum confinement Stark effect (QCSE), crystal orientation, carrier lifetime, and recombination factor will influence the modulation bandwidth, and the transmission performance is severely limited. To solve the insufficient modulation bandwidth, micro-LEDs (μ-LEDs) and laser diodes (LDs) are considered as new ideal light sources. Additionally, the development of modulation technology has dramatically increased the transmission capacity of the system. The performance of the VLC system is briefly discussed in this review article, as well as some of its prospective applications in the realms of the industrial Internet of Things (IoT), vehicle communications, and underwater wireless network applications.

Abstract:Factory automation is the next industrial revolution. 5G and IIoT are enabling smart factories to seamlessly create a network of wirelessly connected machines and people that can instantaneously collect, analyze, and distribute real-time data. A 5G-enabled communication network for IIOT will boost overall efficiency, launching a new era of market opportunities and economic growth. This article presents the 5G-enabled system architecture and ultra-reliable use cases in smart factories associated with automated warehouses. In particular, for URLLC-based cases, key techniques and their corresponding solutions, including diversity for high reliability, short packets for low latency, and on-the-fly channel estimation and decoding for fast receiver processing, are discussed. Then the channel modeling requirements concerning technologies and systems are also identified in industrial scenarios. Ray tracing channel simulation can meet such requirements well, and based on that, the channel characteristic analysis is presented at 28 and 60 GHz for licensed and unlicensed band frequencies to exploit the available degrees of freedom in the channels.

Abstract:We consider visible light communication (VLC) for Industrial Internet of Things (IOT), where multi-user area aggregation and distributed scheduling are adopted to improve network throughput and reduce user packet loss rate. For one thing, because of the massive connection, it faces huge computational complexity, and for another, when allocating limited resources, it is also necessary to consider the quality of service requirements. Based on the above requirements, we have proposed an approach of user area aggregation and maximizing the user sum throughput. In addition, we consider short packet transmission as the control message in Industry 4.0, and derive the achievable transmission rate of short packet. To solve the optimization problem, we adopt the Markov decision process (MDP). Simulation results show the performance gain over the conventional Round-robin method.

Abstract:6G networks are expected to provide extremely high capacity and satisfy emerging applications, but current frequency bands may not be sufficient. Moreover, 6G will provide superior coverage by integrating space/air/underwater networks with terrestrial networks, given that traditional wireless communications are not able to provide high-speed data rates for nonterrestrial networks. Visible light communication (VLC) is a high-speed communication technique with an unlicensed frequency range of 400-800 THz and can be adopted as an alternative approach to solving these problems. In this article, we present the prospects and challenges of VLC in 6G in conjunction with its advances in high-speed transmissions. Recent hot research interests, including new materials and devices, advanced modulation, underwater VLC (UVLC), and signal processing based on machine learning, are also discussed. It is envisaged that VLC will become an indispensable part of 6G given its high-speed transmission advantages and will cooperate with other communication methods to benefit our daily lives.

Abstract:We are seeing a growing use of light emitting diodes (LEDs) in a range of applications including lighting, TV and backlight board screen, display etc. In comparison with the traditional incandescent and fluorescent light bulbs, LEDs offer long life-space, much higher energy efficiency, high performance cost ratio and above all very fast switching capability. LED based Visible Light Communications (VLC) is an emerging field of optical communications that focuses on the part of the electromagnetic spectrum that humans can see. Depending on the transmission distance, we can divide the whole optical network into two categories, long haul and short haul. Visible light communication can be a promising candidate for short haul applications. In this paper, we outline the configuration of VLC, its unique benefits, and describe the state of the art research contributions consisting of advanced modulation formats including adaptive bit loading OFDM, carrierless amplitude and phase (CAP), pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) and single carrier Nyquist, linear equalization and nonlinear distortion mitigation based on machine learning, quasi-balanced coding and phase-shifted Manchester coding. These enabling technologies can support VLC up to 10Gb/s class free space transmission.

Abstract:ABSTRACTLight‐emitting diode‐based (LED) visible light communication (VLC) has become a candidate in next generation ultrahigh‐speed indoor wireless local area network. Within this scenario, it is most likely for a receiver to obtain the signals from multiple LED sources, which in general brings about interference among the transmitters and may result in failure detection. In this article, space‐time block coding (STBC), as a representative multiple antenna techniques, is adopted to enhance the VLC network performance for its effective suppression on the intertransmitter interference. We experimentally demonstrate a multiple input single output VLC network consisting of two RGB‐LEDs. Using STBC‐OFDM Coding, a total throughput of 500 Mb/s is achieved and the free space transmission reach can be extended as long as 5 m. As far as we know, it is the fastest speed and longest distance in multiple antenna VLC network using STBC coding. Both theoretical simulation and experimental investigation reveal great improvements in the robustness, flexibility, and compatibility of a LED‐VLC network due to the appropriate coding scheme. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. SmartVLC: Co-Designing Smart Lighting and Communication for Visible Light Networks

Abstract:Visible Light Communication (VLC) based on LEDs has been a hot topic investigated for over a decade. However, most of the research efforts assume the intensity of LED light is constant. This hypothesis is not true when Smart Lighting is introduced to VLC, which requires LEDs to adapt their brightness based on the intensity of natural ambient light. Smart lighting saves power consumption and improves user comfort. However, intensity adaptation severely affects the throughput performance of data communication. In this paper, we propose SmartVLC, a system that can maximize the throughput (benefit communication) while still maintaining the LEDs' illumination function (benefit smart lighting). A novel Adaptive Multiple Pulse Position Modulation (AMPPM) scheme is proposed to support fine-grained dimming levels to avoid flickering while maximizing the throughput under each dimming level. SmartVLC is implemented on off-the-shelf commodity hardware. Several real-life challenges in both hardware and software are addressed to make it a robust real-time system. Comprehensive experiments are carried out to evaluate the system performance under multifaceted scenarios. Experimental results demonstrate that SmartVLC supports a communication distance up to 3.6m, and improves the throughput achieved with two state-of-the-art approaches by 40 and 12 percent on average, respectively, without bringing any flickering to users.
