Abstract:Optical microcavity‐enhanced light‐matter interaction offers a powerful tool to develop fast and precise sensing techniques, spurring applications in the detection of biochemical targets ranging from cells, nanoparticles and large molecules. However, the intrinsic inertness of such pristine microresonators limits their spread in new fields such as gas detection. Here, we realize a functionalized microlaser sensor by depositing graphene in an erbium doped over‐modal microsphere. By using a 980 nm pump, multiple laser lines excited in different mode families of the microresonator are co‐generated in one single device. The interference between these splitting mode lasers produce beat notes in the electrical domain (0.2∼1.1 MHz) with sub kHz accuracy, thanks to the graphene‐induced intracavity backward scattering. Gas Detection in a Graphene Based Dual-Mode Fiber Laser Microcavity

Abstract:Detection with both high sensitivity and component distinguishability is the major goal of any chemical sensor. In the case of gas detection, such capability could enable wide applications ranging from environmental monitoring, medical diagnosis to explosion analysis. But it is still difficult to achieve in label-free photonic devices, which usually lacks versatile freedoms of measurement. Here, we report a scheme to generate both approximate to 100 kHz Q switching and approximate to 2.5 GHz cavity-mode laser oscillations in a graphene based D-shaped fiber microcavity. This allows us to simultaneously measure the two beat notes in the radio frequency. In this condition, we exploit our unique dual-mode gas sensing scheme, and we achieve real-time detection of two gas samples (CO2 and NH3) in mixture, with detect limit down to single nM/L in vacuum, and tens of ppb in air. Such combination of graphene optoelectronics, integrated fiber laser cavity and dual-mode heterodyne technique paves a way toward high performance chemical sensing, and provides inspirations for design of diverse 2D material optical devices.

Abstract:Optical microcavities offer a promising platform for highly efficient light–matter interactions. Recently, the combination of microresonators and 2D materials in the nanoscale has further enriched the optoelectronics of microcavity geometries, spurring broad advances including lasers, nonlinear converters, modulators, and sensors. Here, we report the concept of compact dual-laser cogeneration in a graphene-microcavity fiber, which offers a way to cancel the optical common mode noises. Driven by a single 980 nm pump, orthogonally polarized laser lines are generated in a pair of degeneracy breaking modes. The two laser lines produce a heterodyne beat note at 118.96 MHz, with frequency noise down to 200 Hz2/Hz at 1 MHz offset, demonstrating a linewidth of 930 Hz in vacuum. This compact device enables on-line and label-free NH3 gas detection with high resolution, realizing a detection limit on a single pmol/L level, and a capability to quantitatively trace gas–graphene interactions. Such a combination of graphene optoelectronics and microcavity photonics demonstrates a novel physical paradigm for microlaser control and offers a new scheme for in situ chemical sensing.

Abstract:Since its successful preparation in 2004, graphene has attracted a great deal of attention, and the sensing application is an important research field. But nearly all the researches about graphene sensors focus on low frequency band, of which the mechanism is mainly dependent on the detection of charge carrier concentration and conductivity variation induced by the absorption of molecules. However, due to the fact that most of the molecules absorbed on the surface of graphene will induce the change of conductivity, this method is incapable of distinguishing different molecules. Transmission mode of a single molecular layer is studied based on Kubo formula and combined with a numerical method. The relation between transmission properties and effective mode index is analyzed, and the broadband localization capability of the waveguide mode is demonstrated. Meanwhile, the variation of the transmission intensity which is due to the interaction between the first order waveguide mode and the gas is adopted to retrieve the vibration spectrum of molecules. Taking the sensing of SO2, CO and C7H8 as examples, the effectiveness of this method is verified based on eigenmode analysis. Results show that the transmission spectrum is consistent with the variation spectrum of gas molecules; besides, in the transmission direction, the larger the interaction range, the greater the attenuation of mode transmission intensity will be. This study has provided a theoretical foundation for the realization of the detection and identification of gas moleculan fingerprints.

Here, we report the concept of a Brillouin laser sensor, by depositing graphene on an over-modal microsphere. Driven by a single continuous-wave pump at 1550 nm, multiple Brillouin lasers from distinct mode families are co-generated in a single device. The Brillouin lasers excited in the high Q cavity produce heterodyne beating notes with phase noise down to −161 dBc/Hz at 1 MHz offset, not only enabling label-freely identifiable detection of multispecies gas molecules adsorbed on the graphene in situ but also rendering it possible to trace individual molecules. Such a combination of graphene optoelectronics and Brillouin lasers in microcavities demonstrates a novel physical paradigm and offers insights into powerful tools for fast and precise optical sensing.

Abstract:Mid-infrared (Mid-IR) silicon photonics has attracted great attention for its promising potential in developing chip-integrated molecular sensors. With the merits of high-quality factors, excellent fabrication reproducibility, and compact device footprints, microring resonators (MRRs) are useful silicon photonic devices for sensing. However, expensive and bulky mid-IR facilities, namely, tunable lasers or spectrometers, may limit applications of MRR-based sensing devices. Here, we theoretically study an MRR-based nitrogen dioxide gas sensor probing with a monochromatic mid-IR laser to conquer this limitation. Moreover, graphene is used as a sensitizing medium by changing the phase of the propagating light in the silicon waveguide after gas molecules adsorption. Specifically, we theoretically realized a sensitivity of 1.259 × 10 −5 RIU/ppm, a limit of detection of 5.1 ppm, and a detection range of 5135 ppm based on the proposed sensor. Our study is expected to open a door to the development of chip-integrated, low-cost, high-sensitivity optical gas sensors.

Abstract:Graphene's physical and chemical properties have garnered significant attention for its use in detecting hazardous gases through electrical detection methods such as conductance or resistance measurements. Despite the development of multi-functionalized sensor arrays, the challenge of limited selectivity in detecting multiple gases persists. To address this issue, we employ a lock-in technique to measure both conductance and dielectric modulations in graphene chips, resulting in valuable enhanced selectivity and uncompromised sensing response compared with conventional charge detection methods based on mere conductance measurements. We also demonstrate the practicality of our dual-parameter sensing scheme through selective detection of multiple gases at (sub) ppm concentrations using metal oxide functionalized graphene sensor arrays, serving as a proof of concept for its broader application in gas sensing.

Abstract:The outstanding potential of microwave resonator-based energy-efficient gas sensors has been overshadowed by their underperforming gas sensing capabilities, especially insignificant sensitivity to detect low-concentration volatile organic compounds (VOCs). This unmet challenge persists primarily due to predominant metallic resonator structures, which further limit their wearable applications and pose environmental concerns. This work presents a laser-induced graphene (LIG)-enabled split-ring resonator (SRR) sensor on a flexible polyimide substrate for the rapid and sensitive detection of gaseous VOCs. To implement the sensor, the conductive traces of the SRR were created using a computer-controlled CO2 laser at an optimized power level, thus inducing 48 mu m thick, conductive (24 S/cm) graphene layers on a polyimide substrate. The SRR gas sensor, in which LIG with three-dimensional networks of porosity serves as conductive and even gas-sensitive traces, benefits from a significantly enhanced interaction between the SRR's electromagnetic field and VOC gases. As a proof of concept, a prototype of the LIG-enabled SRR was implemented and mounted on a test fixture. The developed gas sensor operated at a resonant frequency of 1.402 GHz, which exhibited rapid (similar to 17 s) and noticeable shifts when exposed to 200 ppm of different VOCs (acetone, ethanol, methanol, toluene, and isopropyl alcohol). Additionally, the sensor demonstrated a linear correlation between the resonant frequency and acetone gas concentration (1 ppm-200 ppm), with a sensitivity of 188 KHz/ppm. These electromagnetic and gas sensing results suggest that polyimide-derived LIG traces can replace metal microstrip lines in the SRR structure, opening up possibilities for high-performance microwave resonator gas sensors, even suitable for flexible and wearable applications.

Abstract:On-chip optical gas sensors, which use resonant shifts of cavities to detect molecular concentrations, have the advantages of high sensitivity, real-time detection, and compact footprint. However, such sensors are usually limited by a serious cross-sensitivity issue induced by environmental temperature variations. To overcome this limitation, we study a dual-mode graphene-on-microring resonator to accurately measure gas concentrations without suffering from temperature variations. To be specific, the influences of gas-induced graphene's optical conductivity changes and environmental temperature variations on effective refractive indices of TE 0 and TE 1 modes in the resonator can be decoupled based on the modal linear independent responses. With this method, we designed a nitrogen dioxide sensor with a sensitivity of 0.02 nm/ppm and a limit of detection of 0.5 ppm. Our study paves the way for developing on-chip optical gas sensors with excellent sensitivity and temperature stability.

Abstract:Chemical sensing is one of the most important applications of nanoscience, whose ultimate aim is to seek higher sensitivity. In recent years, graphene with intriguing quantum properties has spurred dramatic advances ranging from materials science to optoelectronics and mechanics, showing its potential to realize individual molecule solid-state sensors. However, for optical sensing the single atom thickness of graphene greatly limits the light-graphene interactions, bottlenecking their performances. Here we demonstrate a novel approach based on the forward phase-matched Brillouin optomechanics in a graphene inner-deposited high Q (>2 × 106) microfluidic resonator, expanding the "electron-photon" interaction in conventional graphene optical devices to the "electron-phonon-photon" process. The molecular adsorption induced surface elastic modulation in graphene enables the Brillouin optomechanical modes (mechanical Q ≈ 43,670) extremely sensitive (200 kHz/ppm) in ammonia gas detection, achieving a noise equivalent detection limit down to 1 ppb and an unprecedented dynamic range over five orders-of-magnitude with fast response. This work provides a new platform for the researches of graphene-based optomechanics, nanophotonics, and optical sensing.

Abstract:An ultra-high sensitivity, multi-parameter monitoring system was established based on a 1.8 mm(3), high-temperature-reduced graphene oxide microcavity. The gas refractive index, pressure, velocity and flux can be detected in real time based on polarization-sensitive absorption of graphene, and the detection limits are 1.1 x 10(-8) RIU (refractive index units), 3.5 Pa, 3.5 mm/s, and 0.1 ml/min respectively, with an experimental response time less than 0.5 s. These results are a great improvement over those measured previously with single-parameter sensors. Furthermore, the system can also recognize gas flow direction accurately, and enable applications for extreme conditions and for precision instruments with microcavity integrated. Hybrid Graphene-Microfiber Waveguide for Chemical Gas Sensing

Abstract:Graphene has been attracting great interest as the basis of novel photonic devices and sensors due to its many unique optical and electric properties that are quite different from conventional film materials. In this paper, we propose and demonstrate a novel hybrid graphene-microfiber waveguide structure and its application to chemical gas sensing for the first time to our knowledge. As the complex refractive index of the extremely thin graphene film (<;1 nm) can be easily modified by chemical gas molecules distributing on its surface, the transverse electric mode surface wave intensity is sensitive to gas concentration. Such an intensity modulation induced by gas molecules can be detected via the coupling of evanescent field between the graphene waveguide and the microfiber. A sensitivity of 0.31 dB/100 ppm and good reversibility are observed experimentally for acetone vapor gas sensing. It is believed that this hybrid waveguide structure could open a new window to realize a variety of graphene-based photonic sensors, for potential applications in the fields of biology, medicine, and chemistry.
Multiple Gas Detection Using V-cavity Coupled Diode Laser

Abstract:A multiple gas detection system based on a V-cavity coupled diode laser around 1550nm has been developed. The V-cavity coupled diode laser exhibits side mode suppression ratio (SMSR) over 40dB and digitally switching over 20nm. The absorption lines of CO, CO2 and H2S are separately around 1567.3nm, 1573nm, 1578nm, which are distributed over the tuning range of the diode laser. The technique of tunable diode laser absorption spectrum (TDLAS) is adopted in the gas detection for the advantage of high sensitivity and resolution. What's more, the systems based on direct absorption spectroscopy (DAS) and wavelength modulation spectroscopy (WMS) are established to measure gas concentration. As a result, a linear relationship between detection signal and gas concentration is worked out and the R-square coefficient of the linear fitting is better than 0.99 for CO and CO2.

Abstract:Resonant sensors offer high stability and sensitivity. Conventional silicon-based resonant sensors focused on micro sizes and kHz-level resonant frequencies ( f re ). Graphene, a two-dimensional material with remarkable electromechanical response efficiency, allows for the fabrication of resonators with MHz-level resonant frequencies, exhibits exceptional sensitivity to gases. The current single-cavity structure suffers from limitations such as low-quality factors, small sensitive area, and structural defects. This paper introduces a graphene multi-cavity array resonant (GMCAR) structure and a driving detection scheme based on electrostatic repulsion. The sensor achieves a fundamental f re of 126.16 MHz and a quality factor (Q) up to 135 at ambient temperature and pressure. Moreover, this sensor successfully detects nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) gas. The f re decreases approximately by 0.4 kHz, indicating the detection of NO 2 gas at a molecular level, with an estimated mass of 0.6 fg. The second vibration mode of the sensor is also detected and used for gas sensing.

Abstract:The miniaturization of optical sensors is a key step towards the development of highly integrated optical sensing techniques and devices. The present work proposes an ultra-compact organic vertical-cavity microlaser based on an active micro-pillar design, and explores its potential applications as a highly integrated gas sensor. The vertical-cavity is realized by embedding an organic Rhodamine 6G doped SiO 2 gain layer inside one small cavity which is formed by distributed bragg reflectors and a high contrast grating thin layer. The hybrid structure of top reflector of cavity enables part of the field to interact with the medium surrounding the cavity, while maintaining a high confinement factor, low lasing threshold, and single-mode operation around 570 nm. In particular, the vertical microlaser can be used as a convenient and versatile wavelength-interrogation sensing architecture, whereby variations of the laser spectral line can be correlated to small changes in the gas concentration. Through using full-wave electromagnetic simulations, we obtain a significantly improved figure of merit (441 RIU -1 ) for the bulk sensitivity. The vertical architecture and small design of the proposed micro-laser-based sensor render it attractive for highly integrated remote sensing of gases.

Abstract:Detection of individual molecules is the ultimate goal of any chemical sensor. In the case of gas detection, such resolution has been achieved in advanced nanoscale electronic solid-state sensors, but it has not been possible so far in integrated photonic devices, where the weak light-molecule interaction is typically hidden by noise. Here, we demonstrate a scheme to generate ultrasensitive down-conversion four-wave-mixing (FWM) in a graphene bipolar-junction-transistor heterogeneous D-shaped fiber. In the communication band, the FWM conversion efficiency can change steeply when the graphene Fermi level approaches 0.4 eV. In this condition, we exploit our unique two-step optoelectronic heterodyne detection scheme, and we achieve real-time individual gas molecule detection in vacuum. Such combination of graphene strong nonlinearities, electrical tunability, and all-fiber integration paves the way toward the design of versatile high-performance graphene photonic devices.

Abstract:Gas-sensitive semiconducting nanomaterials (e.g., metal oxides, graphene oxides, and transition metal dichalcogenides) and their heterojunctions hold great promise in chemiresistive gas sensors. However, they often require a separate synthesis method (e.g., hydrothermal, so-gel, and co-precipitation) and their integration on interdigitated electrodes (IDE) via casting is also associated with weak interfacial properties. This work demonstrates in situ laser-assisted synthesis and patterning of various sensing nanomaterials and their heterojunctions on laser-induced graphene (LIG) foam to form LIG composites as a flexible and stretchable gas sensing platform. The porous LIG line or pattern with nanomaterial precursors dispensed on top is scribed by laser to allow for in situ growth of corresponding nanomaterials. The versatility of the proposed method is highlighted through the creation of different types of gas-sensitive materials, including transition metal dichalcogenide (e.g., MoS 2 ), metal oxide (e.g., CuO), noble metal-doped metal oxide (e.g., Ag/ZnO) and composite metal oxides (e.g., In 2 O 3 /Cr 2 O 3 ). By eliminating the IDE and separate heaters, the LIG gas sensing platform with self-heating also decreases the device complexity. The limit of detection (LOD) of the LIG gas sensor with in situ synthesized MoS 2 , CuO, and Ag/ZnO to NO 2 , H 2 S, and trimethylamine (TMA) is 2.7, 9.8, and 5.6 ppb, respectively. Taken together with the high sensitivity, good selectivity, rapid response/recovery, and tunable operating temperature, the integrated LIG gas sensor array can identify multiple gas species in the environment or exhaled breath.

Abstract:For gas sensors, the ultrasensitive and highly selective detection of multiple components is of great significance in a wide range of applications extending from environment to healthcare, which is still a long-term challenge due to the single sensing mechanism of most sensors. Here, we combine the advantages of microfluidic chips and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) spectra to fabricate a smart single-chip for simultaneously detecting an arbitrary combination of VOCs that incorporates different detection units, working on either a physisorption or chemisorption mechanism. Full integration of microfluidic and multiplex nanostructure components on one chip permits programmable design for sensing multifarious volatile compounds, and enables on-chip signal amplifications with increased reproducibility. As a proof-of-principle experiment, we demonstrate the simultaneous identification of 9 different gases that belong to aromatic compounds, aldehydes, ketones, or sulfides in one mixture, with high sensitivity (ppb level), high selectivity, and high robustness (error ∼8%). We further evaluated the application of our universal gas sensor in two scenarios including indoor air pollution monitoring and exhaled breath-based disease diagnosis. We expect that our design will improve the various practical applications of gas sensors.
