Abstract:A comprehensive examination of the wave-induced oscillatory response of seabeds around structures is of great significance for ensuring the safe operation of marine engineering projects and enhancing the efficiency of marine resource development. Soil properties in nature exhibit spatial variability due to various geological processes, which should be considered in seabed stability analysis. An integrated CFD-SFEM is proposed for spatially heterogeneous seabeds, incorporating multi-physical solvers for nonlinear wave motion and poroelastic seabed response within a unified framework through a one-way coupling procedure. The wave sub-model for nonlinear fluid flow is based on RANS equations, with an internal wave-maker and absorbing layers realized by employing a momentum source function and damping source terms. The spatially heterogeneous seabed sub-model is based on Biot's poroelastic theory and the random field method. We have implemented the integrated model and automated the iterative algorithm for MCS using MATLAB codes, assisted by the LiveLink platform. The proposed method has been validated from various perspectives and applied to a study of soil response around a partially buried pipeline to demonstrate its practical utility. This study offers a novel framework and perspective for the probabilistic evaluation of oscillatory responses in spatially varied seabeds surrounding structures.

Abstract:Wave induced motions and structural distortions, and machinery or propeller excited vibrations and acoustic radiations of a ship are two kinds of important fluid-structure interaction problems. The branch of ship science that describes the coupled wave induced dynamic behavior of fluid-structure interaction system is referred to as hydroelasticity. During the past three decades the development of three-dimensional hydroelasticity theories and applications gained great progress. Recently the 3-D hydroelasticity theory was further extended to account for the fluid compressibility and the effect of the ocean acoustic environment with finite water depth. A three-dimensional sono-elasticity theory was then produced. In this paper, the 3-D hydroelasticity theory and the 3-D sono-elasticity theory of ships are briefly described. To illustrate the applicability and feasibility of these theories and the corresponding numerical approaches, several examples are presented including the predictions of wave loads, rigid-body and flexiblebody responses, springing and fatigue behaviors, machinery or propeller excited coupled structural vibrations and acoustic radiations, as well as design optimizations for improving safety and acoustic behaviors of ships.

Abstract:Offshore oil and gas development plays an important part in the global energy sector. Offshore platforms and flexible pipes are the key equipments in the whole offshore oil and gas development system. Because of the randomness and uncertainty of wave and current loads in the ocean environment, the structural design and mechanical analysis of the marine equipment can be highly complicated. Therefore, this paper reviews the recent works of the theoretical model, numerical simulation, and experimental test in three research areas: hydrodynamic analysis of offshore platforms, structural mechanics analysis of flexible pipe and cable, and monitoring technology of offshore floating structures under marine loads. By analyzing their main research methods and key technical difficulties, this paper provides theoretical basis and technical support for the reliability engineering application of offshore platforms and flexible pipelines. Also, China is relatively backward in the design of marine floating platform, the design, analysis and testing of flexible pipeline and cable, as well as the marine equipment prototype monitoring technology research. Calling for breakthroughs at the earliest possible stage in the above fields, prime research should be focused on and strategic planning should be made to deal with "key areas and stranglehold problems". It is of great significance for the development of China's deep-sea energy and resource development of independent technology and on time to achieve the "carbon peak" national strategic objectives.

Abstract:A better understanding of physical process of the fluid-seabed-structure interaction (FSSI) is beneficial for engineers involved in the design of marine infrastructures. Most previous studies for the problem of FSSI have considered wave-only conditions, despite the co-existence of wave and current in the real ocean environment. Unlike the previous studies, currents are included in the present study for the numerical modelling of FSSI, using an integrated FVM-FEM scheme, in which the VARANS equation is used to simulate fluid field, while Biot's poro-elastic model is used for porous flow in a seabed. Numerical examples show the important influences of currents on the local hydrodynamic process and the resulting dynamics of seabed foundation around a submerged rubble mound breakwater. The structure is relatively stable in the presence of counter-current waves, whereas the co-current waves would significantly compromise the instability of structure due to potential of shear failure and liquefaction in its sandy seabed foundation.

Abstract:A semi-submersible offshore platform always operates under complex weather conditions, especially wind and waves. It is vital to analyze the structural dynamic responses of the platform in short-term sea states under the combined wind and wave loads, which touches upon three following work. Firstly, a derived relationship between wind and waves reveals a correlation of wind velocity and significant wave height. Then, an Improved Mixture Simulation (IMS) method is proposed to simulate the time series of wind/waves accurately and efficiently. Thus, a wind-wave scatter diagram is expanded from the traditional wave scatter diagram. Finally, the time series of wind/wave pressures on the platform in the short-term sea states are converted by Workbench-AQWA. The numerical results demonstrate that the proposed numerical methods are validated to be applicable for wind and wave simulations in structural analyses. The structural dynamic responses of the platform members increase with the wind and wave strength. In the up-wind and wave state, the stresses on the deck, the connections between deck and columns, and the connection between columns and pontoons are relatively larger under the vertical bending moment. These numerical methods and results are wished to provide some references for structural design and health monitoring of several offshore platforms.

Abstract:The three-dimensional (3D) hydroelasticity theory of floating structures established in 1984 embodies the predictions of seakeeping behaviors, structural loads, dynamic strength, fatigue, and vibration of a surface ship or an underwater vehicle travelling in the sea in a unified generalized fluid-structure interaction theory. After more than thirty years of development, this theory has been further extended to two main branches: the 3D hydroelasticity theories for examining the wave excited dynamic responses of ships, and the 3D hydroelasticity theories for investigating the machinery or propeller excited vibrations and underwater acoustic radiations of a ship. The latter is also called the 3D sono-elasticity theory of ships. Drawn by the momentum gained from the comprehensive demand of marine applications, China Ship Scientific Research Center (CSSRC) has been devoted to the systematic innovative research in creating the linear and non-linear 3D hydroelasticity theories of ships, the 3D hydroelasticity theory of floating structures deployed in complicated ocean geographical environment near islands and reefs, the 3D sono-elasticity theory of ships in ocean acoustic environment etc. together with developing the numerical methods and corresponding software. These have been extensively employed to solve the key technical problems, such as motion and structural response predictions, behavior and safety assessment, design check and optimization of surface ships, underwater vehicles and other marine structures, This paper is not to present the state of the art of the worldwide development of hydroelasticity theories, but to concisely described the concept and framework of the 3D hydroelasticity and sono-elasticity theories of ships which are mainly developed by the research group of CSSRC. Typical application examples of the hydroelastic analyses of a 500000 DWT ultra large ore carrier and an 8-module very large floating structure, as well as the sono-elastic analysis of a simplified submarine model are also briefly illustrated. Finally, simply mentioned are the important directions of future research in the field of hydroelasticity and sono-elasticity of ships.

Furthermore, deep seas and oceans make up 92. 8% of the oceans and seas. Therefore, oceanfloor is also a window for understanding many processes of the earth. From the view of geodynamics, dynamic system of oceanfloor can be subdivided into mid-oceanic ridge, deep-sea basin, subductin and mantle subsystems. Many high techniques for exploration and processing in the fields of marine sciences such as marine geology, marine geophysics and marine geochemistry as well as international infrastructures of various scales of ocean observatory networks connecting with many sensors, are employed to reveal, measure, observe and monitor different-scale architectures, structures and processes in different subseafloor tectonic settings and various variables of different geological processes, and transportation, interchange, transition and cycling of materials and energy on different interfaces or between different spheres. These techniques can help scientists understand change of the earth system.

On the Instability of Offshore Foundations: Theory and Mechanism

Abstract:As the offshore engineering moving from shallow to deep waters, the foundation types for fixed and floating platforms have been gradually evolving to minimize engineering costs and structural risks in the harsh offshore environments. Particular focus of this paper is on the foundation instability and its failure mechanisms as well as the relevant theory advances for the prevailing foundation types in both shallow and deep water depths. Piles, spudcans, gravity bases, suction caissons, and plate anchors are detailed in this paper. The failure phenomena and mechanisms for each type of foundations are identified and summarized, respectively. The theoretical approaches along with sophisticated empirical solutions for the bearing capacity problems are then presented. The major challenges are from flow-structure-soil coupling processes, rigorous constitutive modeling of cyclic behaviors of marine sediments, and the spatial variability of soil properties for large-spreading structures. Further researches are suggested to reveal the instability mechanisms for underpinning the evolution of offshore foundations.

Abstract:Solid mechanics is an old discipline of applied science and its development is very much influenced by the advances of technology as is the case of many other disciplines of science. The advent of electronic computers led to an advance for mechanics, activated many branches of mechanics, and enabled theoretical studies and applications to have a rapid development in both depth and scope. Traditionally, solid mechanics is divided into several branches, for example structural mechanics, theory of elasticity, plasticity, plates and shells, geomechanics, etc., which are now well incorporated in the curricula of engineering colleges and institutes. In fact, the basic concepts were derived from the same source. Once the computational barrier is removed, some naturally developed unified approaches can be applied to all those branches, such as the finite element method (FEM) and other numerical methods. With the help of computers, computational structural mechanics has developed a far wider scope than in the past. It no longer limits itself to the study of elastic framed structures or trusses, now covering plates and shells, three dimensional continuum, and other complicated composed structural systems such as coupled structure-soil or structure-fluid systems. The loading conditions are no longer limited within the elastic range but can be extended to plastic, fracture or failure ranges. More importantly, computational structural mechanics not only analyses a given structure in a passive way, but also provides the possibility of finding its optimum design in an active way. The advances of CAD technique further extend the area of computational solid mechanics and the engineers may be provided with final drawings.
Simulating Cross-Scale Flow Dynamics Around Offshore Monopile Foundations with a GFD-CFD Coupled Model

Abstract:Flow dynamics are complex and undergo significant impact from offshore engineering infrastructures, such as wind turbines, involving interactions across different temporal and spatial scales. Individual numerical models of geophysical fluid dynamics (GFD) or computational fluid dynamics (CFD) face challenges in accurately representing these dynamics. To effectively capture the three-dimensional cross-scale flow around offshore infrastructures, we propose a generalized coupling framework that integrates the unstructured-grid Finite-Volume Community Ocean Model (FVCOM) for GFD and the Open Field Operation and Manipulation (OpenFOAM) for CFD. With the validation against the flume experiment, the common-boundary nesting method was developed to allow an accurate representation of flow dynamics around offshore hydraulic infrastructures. Idealized monopile foundation experiments demonstrate the model's capability to capture the formation of Karman vortex street, rotating horseshoe vortex under realistic astronomical tidal conditions. Application of this coupling framework to the offshore wind farm in Yangjiang, China, reveals flow direction lagging of 15 degrees in the wake of a monopile under diurnal tide. This coupling approach, leveraging the strengths of both CFD and GFD models, provides a universal downscaling methodology in geophysical conditions, for a better understanding of the impact of offshore hydraulic infrastructures on the surrounding environment and further planning offshore engineering projects.

Abstract:This paper proposes a modeling and simulation method of seafloor seismic motions on offshore sites, which are composed of the base rock, the porous soil layers and the seawater layer, based on the fundamental hydrodynamics equations and one-dimensional wave propagation theory. The base rock motions are assumed to consist of P- and S-waves and are modeled by the seismological model in southwest of Western Australia (SWWA). The transfer functions of the offshore site are calculated by incorporating the derived dynamic-stiffness matrix of seawater layer into the total stiffness matrix. The effect of water saturation on the P-wave velocity and Poisson׳s ratio of subsea soil layers are considered in the model. Both onshore and seafloor seismic motions are stochastically simulated. The comparison results show that the seafloor vertical motions are significantly suppressed near the P-wave resonant frequencies of the upper seawater layer, which makes their intensities much lower than the onshore vertical motions. The simulated seafloor motions are in compliance with the characteristics of available seafloor earthquake recordings and can be used as inputs in the seismic analyses of offshore structures.

Abstract:This study proposes a hydroelastic optimization method for multiseparated modules of high-specific-strength floating structures with low-weight cores and high-strength surfaces in two-dimension. A sixth-order dynamical model of this floating composite structure is deduced from the fluid-structure interaction condition of the wave surface. Drawing upon potential flow theory and separation of variables, we discretize the water domain into plate-covered areas and open water areas, in which the analytical solution for the interaction between waves and the floating composite structure with any number of separated modules is derived. The convergence and accuracy of the analytical solution are verified by calculating the transmission and reflection coefficients of the waves and various hydrodynamic parameters, including deflection, bending moment, and shear force. Furthermore, the effects of the number of modules, module spacing, and core thickness on the hydrodynamic parameters of the floating structure are investigated. The module number and structural-component-material parameters are coupled in influencing the hydroelastic behavior and mechanical responses of this floating cluster. This proposed method is an alternative optimization technique for considering the sea state, spatial modules, structural features and material properties in practical engineering applications.

Abstract:Structural Optimization is an important development in the theory of structural design, which has been an effective tool of the conventional design. Now the trial-and-error design method based on the design codes is still widely used in the design of offshore platforms. With the carrying out of the national tenth-five-year plan of the oil exploitation in Bohai, the structural optimization will play an important role in the design of ice-resistant offshore platforms. The state of the art of structural optimization for offshore platforms is reviewed in the present paper, including optimization design based on static analysis, dynamic analysis, reliability and life-cycle cost. Some aspects for the future research on the structural optimization for offshore platforms are discussed.
