Abstract:Realization of the highly linear acoustic wave filters/ multiplexers is one of the most important challenges on a radio-frequency front-end portion of cellular phone handsets, thus many studies on it, such as measurement techniques, simulation techniques, and generation mechanisms, have been performed. Abstract:Requirements being placed on acoustic devices for mobile communication systems are becoming more and more stringent every year. In addition to very low insertion loss and steep cutoff characteristics, it is vital to reduce the inter-modulation distortion (IMD) or so-called triple-beat (TB) products, so that they can be used in the wideband code division multiple access (WCDMA) or third-generation systems [1,3]. This paper clarifies nonlinearities on surface acoustic wave (SAW) and bulk acoustic wave (BAW) resonators and indicates the importance to suppress the even-order nonlinearity of BAW resonators. Then, we demonstrate the further effectiveness of our proposed method [4] using several types BAW duplexers and present how to reduce nonlinearities.

Abstract:Terahertz (THz) communication is of great importance to utilize the huge bandwidth for future broadband wireless communications. Photonics is recognized as a promising technique to support high-speed THz communication attributed to its broad bandwidth and signal transparency [1]. In the photonics enabled hybrid high-speed THz communication links, the system impairments is however complicated. Not only the distortions from electrical devices, but also the impairments from optical devices, such as the nonlinear saturation from optical modulators, square-law detection of photodetectors [2], will severely deteriorate the THz system performance. Thus, the implementations of THz communication must develop advanced baseband digital signal processing (DSP) techniques to deal with these issues.

Abstract:Surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices are one of the indispensable components in the radio frequency (RF) front-end of mobile phones. With the development of mobile communication technology, the requirements for linear specification of devices are more and more strict. Nonlinear distortions of SAW devices have a serious influence on the application of mobile RF modules. To satisfy the strict requirement of linearity of communication system, it is necessary to understand the generation mechanism of nonlinearity and study the accurate modeling, appropriate measurement methods, and nonlinear response elimination technology. In this paper, we summarize the research progress on the nonlinearity of SAW devices in recent years from four aspects: the generation mechanism, simulation methods, measurement system, and suppression technology. The nonlinear harmonics with the nonlinear Mason equivalent circuit model are simulated. Furthermore, harmonics and intermodulation signals of SAW filters are tested by the authors. Thanks to these research studies, it is of great significance to the development of future RF front-end modules with high linear SAW devices.

Abstract:Introduction of new communication standards makes specifications given to RF surface and bulk acoustic wave (SAW/BAW) devices tougher and tougher. For example, futher improvement of the device linearity is demanded without increasing the device size. Nevertheless, it is still unclear where and how the non-linearity occurs. For finding origin(s) of the very weak non-linearity, its measurement system must possess excellent linearity, large signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and low feedthrough level. This paper discusses the setup of the non-linear measurement system for RF SAW/BAW devices.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss the nonlinear performance difference between surface acoustic wave (SAW) and bulk acoustic wave (BAW) resonators, which include intermodulation distortion (IMD) or triple-beat (TB) products, and indicate the importance of reducing even-order nonlinearities of BAW resonators. We were able to validate the accuracy and efficiency of our proposed simulation technique for BAW devices by comparing the results of our simulation with experimental data. We verified that our circuit model is a high-performance tool that can be used to predict BAW device nonlinearities, and we propose how to suppress even-order nonlinearities by employing a thin-film bulk acoustic resonator (FBAR) duplexer for wideband code division multiple access (WCDMA) band 1. Finally, we introduce highly linear FBAR duplexers.

Abstract:This paper describes the physical mechanisms of passive intermodulation generation, including nonlinearity in metal contacts and materials. The nonlinearity in metal contact considers the weakly nonlinear conduction mechanism under microscopic condition, surface roughness, mechanical stress and symmetry of contact interfaces. The nonlinearity in material considers the multiphysics coupling effects inside the transmission line, such as thermo-electricity coupling, nonlinear source scattering effects, and other structural factors. Finally, the future development direction is clarified according to the research trends.

Abstract:This paper discusses the effect of nonlinearities introduced by Radio Frequency (RF) amplifier in practical digital receivers. Taking downlink as an example, after considering several main limitations in engineering implementation and simplifying the model of the receiver, the effects of receiver nonlinearities on the performance both in A WGN and Rayleigh fading channel are obtained. In A WGN channel, the SNR at the input of Am converter has a limit, even though the transmitting SNR is very large with given input power of A/D converter. Combining with the characteristic of quantization, we find trade-off relationship between the SNR at the input and the output of A/D converter. Then, a method is proposed to maximize the SNR at the output of Am converter, and an upper bound of the SNR is also obtained. Considering nonlinearities and using the optimizing method in this paper, the SNR at the output of AID converter increase 4 dB at most, as the digital bit increases 1 bit. In Rayleigh fading channel, a threshold of transmitting rate is derived, which is affected by nonlinearities of the receiver.

Abstract:In the silicon-based devices, the third-order nonlinear effects containing Kerr effects, two-photon absorption (TPA), free carrier absorption (FCA) and free carrier dispersion (FCD) play the important role in the physical characteristics. In this paper, taking consideration of the linear and nonlinear effects, a comprehensive numerical analysis model based on the finite-difference-time-domain (FDTD) method is built and demonstrated. The nonlinear characteristics of the silicon-based waveguides and micro ring resonators are further discussed in the simulated results. The proposed model might provide an effective analysis method for all silicon-based devices, due to its good compatibility and accuracy.

Abstract:Nonlinearity, widely existing in passive radio frequency (RF) devices, can distort the signals in the communication system and draw increasing attention in satellite communication, 5G, and future 6G communication. The nonlinearity in RF metal contacts is theoretically and experimentally investigated in this article. First, the tunneling current and the thermionic emission current induced by the native oxide film on the metal surface are numerically calculated by exploiting the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin method. The spectrum characteristics of the nonlinear current are investigated and analyzed. Then, an equivalent circuit for the RF metal contact is established based on the mechanical and electric parameters as well as the surface topographic parameters. The equivalent circuit is used for nonlinearity investigation and the second/third-order harmonics are simulated. The proposed method can provide good agreement with the third-order harmonic of experiments when the input power varies from 17.5 to 27.5 dBm. The simulated results reveal that the nonlinearity can be reduced by a relatively thick oxide film, which can be used to suppress nonlinearity by intentionally introducing a thick oxide film. Our methods provide a way for RF nonlinearity analysis and design.

Abstract:This paper discusses the measurement setup of non-linearity caused in radio frequency (RF) surface and bulk acoustic wave (SAW/BAW) devices with high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). It is shown that when some important points are considered, the background level can be suppressed better than -135 dBm, and the non-linearity signals can be measured in high SNR. Finally, measured results are compared with those measured independently by Murata Manufacturing, and validity of the measurement is cross-checked. (C) 2015 The Japan Society of Applied Physics

Abstract:Suppression of nonlinear signal generation in radiofrequency (RF) surface and bulk acoustic wave devices is one of the most important subjects for the RF front-end modules of recent cellular handsets. In particular, issues with second-order nonlinear products of bulk acoustic waves are well known. In this work, we succeeded in extracting the dominant parameters for second-order nonlinear analysis proposed by Hashimoto et al. [Joint Conf. European Frequency and Time Forum and IEEE Freq. Cont. Symp., 2017, p. 538] and verified that it is applicable in a wide frequency range and also effective for film bulk acoustic resonator (FBAR) device design. Combining the extracted nonlinear coefficients on the perturbation analysis by driving near the fundamental frequency (f0) and half resonant frequency (1/2f0) of the FBAR could reproduce second-order nonlinear characteristics in a wide frequency range. It was also confirmed that the proposed simulations are in good agreement with measurement results for various types of resonators and FBAR filters.

Abstract:Acoustic communication has become a research focus without requiring extra hardware and facilitates numerous near-field applications such as mobile payment. To communicate, existing researchers use either an audible frequency band or an inaudible one. The former gains a high throughput but endures being audible, which can be annoying to users. The latter, although inaudible, falls short in throughput due to the available (near) ultrasonic bandwidth. In this article, we achieve both high speed and inaudibility for acoustic communication by utilizing the nonlinearity effect on microphones. We theoretically prove the maximum throughput of inaudible acoustic communication by modulating an audible signal onto an ultrasonic band. Then, we design and implement UltraComm , which utilizes a specially designed OFDM scheme. The scheme takes into account the characteristics of the nonlinear speaker-to-microphone channel, aiming to mitigate the effects of signal distortion. We evaluate UltraComm on different mobile devices and achieve throughput as high as 16.24 kbps.

Abstract:Acoustic communication has become a research focus without requiring extra hardware on the receiver side and facilitates numerous near-field applications such as mobile payment, data sharing. To communicate, existing researches either use audible frequency band or inaudible one. The former gains a high throughput but endures being audible, which can be annoying to users. The latter, although inaudible, falls short in throughput due to the limited available (near) ultrasonic bandwidth (18-22 kHz). In this paper, we achieve both high speed and inaudibility for acoustic communication by modulating the coded acoustic signal (0-20 kHz) on ultrasonic carrier. By utilizing the nonlinearity effect on microphone, the modulated audible acoustic signal can be demodulated and then decoded. We design and implement UltraComm, an inaudible acoustic communication system with OFDM scheme based on the characteristics of the nonlinear speaker-to-microphone channel. We evaluate UltraComm on different mobile devices and achieve throughput as high as 16.24 kbps, meanwhile, keep inaudibility.

Abstract:Requirements for radio frequency (RF) devices in mobile phones have been getting more stringent, especially in multiband / carrier aggregation systems constructing many RF components. In this paper, we discuss two important items for RF acoustic devices developed by our team. First, we introduce the heat radiation effect and temperature compensation technology to suppress the temperature drift of acoustic devices for lower insertion loss. Heat sink effect of substrates and package, and temperature compensated film bulk acoustic resonator (FBAR) devices employing SiOF is introduced. Then, how to suppress the signal leakage from transmission (Tx) to reception (Rx) of the duplexer using signal cancellation technique is discussed, and SAW Band 8 duplexer is demonstrated as an example.

Abstract:Wireless communications are rapidly becoming the means of data and information transfer for a broad range of applications. As wireless communication applications continue to expand, the information transfer rates are evolving toward the Gigabit per second data rate and, for some applications, there is even a need for terabit per second data rate transfer in the wireless network. In addition, wireless terminals often require instantaneous switching and communications between network members. For most applications directional antennas are needed to support the high data throughput requirements, and phased array antennas are the only high gain, directional antennas that can be rapidly switched to provide instantaneous communications among network members scattered geographically. Wireless terminal equipment is currently designed to operate in the 1 to 60 GHz frequency range and, traditionally, these equipment are designed with RF hardware. More recently, optics technology has been demonstrated to play an important role in RF systems as the True-Time-Delay in the phased array antenna, and, for some systems operating at high data rates, optical interconnects at the baseband level require E-O and O-E conversions. This paper discusses the considerations in using optics technology in the design of the wireless terminal network including optical signal processing, optical backplanes, optical networking, optical interconnects, and optical components. This paper also describes the architecture of an RF wireless communications network using a range of optical technologies.
