Abstract:<p>From basic research to industry process, battery energy storage systems have played a great role in the informatization, mobility, and intellectualization of modern human society. Some potential systems such as Li, Na, K, Mg, Zn, and Al secondary batteries have attracted much attention to maintain social progress and sustainable development. As one of the components in batteries, electrolytes play an important role in the upgrade and breakthrough of battery technology. Since room‐temperature ionic liquids (ILs) feature high conductivity, nonflammability, nonvolatility, high thermal stability, and wide electrochemical window, they have been widely applied in various battery systems and show great potential in improving battery stability, kinetics performance, energy density, service life, and safety. Thus, it is a right time to summarize these progresses. In this review, the composition and classification of various ILs and their recent applications as electrolytes in diverse metal‐ion batteries (Li, Na, K, Mg, Zn, Al) are outlined to enhance the battery performances.</p>

Abstract:Conventional flammable liquid electrolytes are not suitable for next generation lithium metal batteries with high energy density, stable performance, and excellent safety. Although solid polymer electrolytes have been studied for decades, it is still quite challenging for them to be pushed forward for practical application. Developing polymer/inorganic hybrid electrolytes that take advantage of both polymers and inorganic materials is considered to be an important route to make breakthrough. Ionic liquids are green materials in electrochemical process with unique advantages. This review summarizes recent research advances in developing ionic liquid containing, polymer/inorganic hybrid electrolytes, including their preparation routes, ion conduction, electrochemical properties, and mechanical and thermal properties.

Abstract:Ionic liquids (ILs) have appeared as the most promising electrolytes for lithium-ion batteries, owing to their unique high ionic conductivity, chemical stability and thermal stability properties. Poly(ionic liquid)s (PILs) with both IL-like characteristic and polymer structure are emerging as an alternative of traditional electrolyte. In this review, recent progresses on the applications of IL/PIL-based semi-solid state electrolytes, including gel electrolytes, ionic plastic crystal electrolytes, hybrid electrolytes and single-ion conducting electrolytes for lithium-ion batteries are discussed.

Abstract:Two-dimensional inorganic materials, such as exfoliated graphene, have been under much research attention as of late, for their high surface-to-mass ratio and unique physical and chemical properties. Many of these properties are highly sought after in Li/Na-based batteries. In this paper, we review recent advances in inorganic 2D materials and summarize their applications as: (i) the electrode materials or additives for Li/Na-ion batteries; (ii) the scaffold or interfacial layer for lithium-metal anodes; (iii) the cathode for Li/Na-O-2 batteries; and (iv) the anchoring material for lithium polysulfides for Li-S batteries. The challenges of employing 2D materials in these Li/Na-based batteries to improve performance are discussed and possible solutions are proposed.

Abstract:Ionic liquids (ILs) with remarkable performance offer opportunities to advance the green and low-carbon chemical processes. Much work is focused on building innovative theory and knowledge framework to unravel the ILs' nature, yet there is also an increasing trend to utilize ILs in the rapidly emerging fields. Aiming to provide an overview regarding the recent advances and challenges of ILs in the development of green processes for renewable resources, this review highlights the properties and functions of ILs as electrolyte additives, modifiers, exfoliation agents, nucleation substrates, IL gating, tunable solvents, versatile carriers or biosensor components in three representative and revolutionary production processes, including new energy, electronic information materials, and biotechnologies. The innovative applications of ILs demonstrate their potential to create the landscape of low-carbon, high-end and smart technologies.

Abstract:Developing post-lithium-ion battery technology featured with high raw material abundance and low cost is extremely important for the large-scale energy storage applications, especially for the metal-based battery systems such as aluminum, sodium, and magnesium ion batteries. However, their developments are still in early stages, and one of the major challenges is to explore a safe and reliable electrolyte. An ionic liquid-based electrolyte is attractive and promising for developing safe and nonflammable devices with wide temperature ranges owing to their several unique properties such as ultralow volatility, high ionic conductivity, good thermal stability, low flammability, a wide electrochemical window, and tunable polarity and basicity/acidity. In this review, the recent emerging limitations and strategies of ionic liquid-based electrolytes in the above battery systems are summarized. In particular, for aluminum-ion batteries, the interfacial reaction between ionic liquid-based electrolytes and the electrode, the mechanism of aluminum storage, and the optimization of electrolyte composition are fully discussed. Moreover, the strategies to solve the problems of electrolyte corrosion and battery system side reactions are also highlighted. Finally, a general conclusion and a perspective focusing on the current development limitations and directions of ionic liquid-based electrolytes are proposed along with an outlook. In order to develop novel high-performance ionic liquid electrolytes, we need in-depth understanding and research on their fundamentals, paving the way for designing next-generation products.

Abstract:The rapid evolution in electrolyte engineering has significantly propelled the development of synthesis and the precise tailoring of the properties of inorganic solid electrolytes (ISEs). These advancements are crucial to meeting the stringent performance requirements of high-performance all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs). This review comprehensively summarizes recent progress in the synthesis techniques and electrochemical characteristics of various ISEs, including oxides, sulfides, hydroborates, antiperovskites, and halides, highlighting their applications in ASSBs. Additionally, we review key challenges in ASSB development, such as the limited compatibility between ISEs and electrodes, and the detrimental interfacial reactions. Strategies to overcome these challenges, including the use of composite cathodes and solid interface layers, are discussed. Finally, we present current ASSB models and propose emerging approaches driving the future development of ASSBs for the next generation of energy storage solutions.

Abstract:Interfacial issues impede the advancement of current solid state battery technology; thus, interface engineering approaches are necessary to enable solid-state configuration. The advantage of solid-state cells stems from their low flammability and high electrochemical stability. Ionic liquids are viscous and nonflammable compounds that possess the requisite physical properties while optimizing the interface between solid electrodes and solid electrolytes, accelerating interfacial ion transport and enabling the fabrication of engineered interphases via the supply of robust chemical building blocks. This review summarizes the roles of ionic liquids in solid-state batteries focusing on the interface, with insights into their functionality as well as highlighting their applicability in the next generation battery systems.

Abstract:Lithium metal is regarded as one of the most promising anode materials due to its intrinsic superiority including the lowest electrode potential (−3.04 V vs. SHE) and impressive theoretical specific capacity (3860 mAh/g). Even though the study of lithium metal batteries (LMBs) can be traced back to the 1970s, the practical promotion has been hindered by some substantial obstacles, such as the growth of dendrite and the low Coulombic efficiency (CE). During the past decade, extensive investigative approaches have been devoted to stabilizing the deposition of lithium metal as well as inhibiting the undesirable parasitic reactions. Electrolytes play a crucial role in the deposition of lithium, and that explains the reason why a great deal of progress has been attained in this field. This review summarizes the representative work in recent years, including the optimization of conventional electrolyte components, as well as the novel materials in a solvent, Li salt, and additives. Moreover, high-concentration electrolytes and localized high-concentration electrolytes are summarized representing two fruitful fields, based on the emerging theories of lithium-ion coordination and solvation sheath layer. Finally, some prospects are proposed to lead us closer to the large-scale application of LMBs.

Abstract:A relevant issue associated with the environmental impact of current and future technologies is the balance between performance and sustainability. In this regard, there is an effort to increase the sustainability of energy storage systems and, in particular, of lithium-ion batteries, by replacing the most harmful battery components by environmentally friendlier ones. The application of ionic liquids, both as a replacement for the electrolytes or solid polymer electrolytes, is a promising strategy to achieve this goal. In this work, a perspective of the use of ionic liquids for lithium-ion batteries is presented, focusing on the main used types, and their applications in separators and solid polymer electrolytes. The future trends in the use of ionic liquids for battery systems are also presented. Considering their properties and features widely reported in the literature, the use of ionic liquids for energy storage systems has the potential to properly address sustainability issues without jeopardizing their performance.

Abstract:Aqueous batteries are emerging power sources due to the merits of high safety, low cost, environmental friendliness, etc. However, several key issues such as narrow electrochemical stability window, dissolution of active materials, notorious dendrite growth and poor cycling lifespan hinder the practical application of aqueous batteries. Recently, 2D MXenes and their derivatives for aqueous batteries have exhibited substantial encouraging progress due to the special characters. The related researches have dramatically increased since 2019. However, comprehensive reviews on this topic are rare. Herein, the latest advances of MXenes and their derivatives for aqueous Zn-, Li-, Na-and dual-ion batteries are systematically reviewed, including cathode fabrication, anode design and electrolyte optimization, etc. This review aims to boost rational design strategies for practical application of aqueous batteries by combining the fundamental principle and research developments. Firstly, the fundamental background of aqueous rechargeable batteries is introduced and the superior merits for electrochemical energy storage of MXenes and their derivatives are summarized. Subsequently, the design strategies and internal mechanism of MXenes and their derivatives for aqueous batteries are comprehensively summarized and discussed. Finally, perspectives on the future design tactics of MXenes-based materials for aqueous batteries are proposed.

Abstract:In this review, elemental 2D materials and their applications in Li/Na storage have been concisely outlined and systematically summarized from group IIIA to VIA. Preparation methods and structures are described and compared. Latest research progress of elemental 2D materials in Li/Na ion batteries are summarized and discussed with future challenges and prospects for elemental 2D materials in Li/Na‐ion batteries. Two‐dimensional (2D) nanostructure is currently the subject in the fields of new energy storage and devices. During the past years, a broad range of 2D materials represented by graphene have been developed and endow with excellent electrochemical properties. Among them, elemental 2D materials (Xenes) are an emerged material family for Li/Na‐ion battery (LIB/SIB) anodes. Compared with other 2D materials and bulk materials, Xenes may exhibit some great superiorities for Li/Na storage, including excellent conductivity, fast ion diffusion and large active sites exposure. In this review, we provide a systematic summary of the recent progress and achievements of Xenes as well as their applications in LIBs/SIBs. The broad categorization of Xenes from group IIIA to VIA has been concisely outlined, and the related details in syntheses, structures and Li/Na‐ion storage properties are reviewed. Further, the latest research progress of Xenes in Li/Na ion batteries are summarized, together with mechanism discussions. Finally, the challenges and prospects of Xenes applied to Li/Na ion battery are proposed based on its current developments.
