Abstract:Compared with traditional lithium-ion systems, solid-state batteries could achieve high safety and energy density. Although great improvements have been made, especially in solid-state electrolyte, fundamental challenges still remain in the solid-state systems in terms of chemistry and mechanics. This review summarizes the fundamental issues in solid-state batteries with a focus on three critical phenomena: (i) the principles of developing high ionic conductors, (ii) structural evolution at chemically unstable electrolyte-electrode interfaces, and (iii) the effects of manufacturing solid-state batteries, including electrode, electrolyte design. The future perspectives are also outlined to guide the development of solid-state batteries.

Abstract:From the viewpoint of molecular engineering, this review presents a comprehensive and in‐depth overview of recent advancements in designing new electrolyte components for high‐energy Li–metal batteries. Recent progress and perspectives from both the academia and the industry are also discussed to guide the design of future high‐performance electrolytes and practical Li–metal battery devices. Lithium–metal batteries (LMBs) have garnered significant interests for their promising high gravimetric energy density (Eg) ∼ 750 Wh kg−1. However, the practical application of the LMBs is plagued by the high reactivity and large volume change during charging–discharging of the lithium–metal anode (LMA), seriously deteriorating the battery safety and cycle life. Great efforts have been devoted to tailoring the electrolytes to favor the Li–metal electroplating by uniformizing the deposition morphology and by suppressing the side reactions between electrolytes and LMA. The aggressive chemistries of both the LMA and its high‐voltage counterpart give new electrolyte components more opportunities, especially designing via molecular engineering. Here, a comprehensive and in‐depth overview of the scientific challenges, fundamental mechanisms, and particularly historical strategies of designing new molecules for electrolyte components including solvents, salts, and additives. Their important roles in tuning the Li+ solvation structure, interface composition, decomposition pathways, and the resultant electrochemical performance of LMBs are also presented. Finally, novel insights and promising research directions from the practical application viewpoints are proposed for future electrolyte designs for high‐voltage LMBs.

Abstract:High-voltage lithium metal batteries (HVLMBs) have received widespread attention as next generation high-energy-density batteries to meet the urgent demands of modern life. However, the unstable interphase between electrolytes and highly reactive electrodes is still an important threshold for practical applications. In this feature article, we review the formation mechanism of the electrode-electrolyte interphase in terms of cathodes and the Li metal anode, respectively, and summarize the surface modification methods to stabilize the interphase of HVLMBs. Electrolyte regulation strategies especially those using electrolyte additives are introduced, and the relationship between liquid electrolyte formulation, interphase engineering and the electrochemical performance of HVLMBs is analyzed. Finally, an industry-level evaluation is carried out and the remaining challenges are discussed for advanced electrolytes to guarantee the practical applications and commercialization of HVLMBs.

Abstract:High-voltage lithium metal batteries (HVLMBs) have been arguably regarded as the most prospective solution to ultrahigh-density energy storage devices beyond the reach of current technologies. Electrolyte, the only component inside the HVLMBs in contact with both aggressive cathode and Li anode, is expected to maintain stable electrode/electrolyte interfaces (EEIs) and facilitate reversible Li + transference. Unfortunately, traditional electrolytes with narrow electrochemical windows fail to compromise the catalysis of high-voltage cathodes and infamous reactivity of the Li metal anode, which serves as a major contributor to detrimental electrochemical performance fading and thus impedes their practical applications. Developing stable electrolytes is vital for the further development of HVLMBs. However, optimization principles, design strategies, and future perspectives for the electrolytes of the HVLMBs have not been summarized in detail. This review first gives a systematical overview of recent progress in the improvement of traditional electrolytes and the design of novel electrolytes for the HVLMBs. Different strategies of conventional electrolyte modification, including high concentration electrolytes and CEI and SEI formation with additives, are covered. Novel electrolytes including fluorinated, ionic-liquid, sulfone, nitrile, and solid-state electrolytes are also outlined. In addition, theoretical studies and advanced characterization methods based on the electrolytes of the HVLMBs are probed to study the internal mechanism for ultrahigh stability at an extreme potential. It also foresees future research directions and perspectives for further development of electrolytes in the HVLMBs.

Abstract:The specific energy of commercial lithium (Li)-ion batteries is reaching the theoretical limit. Future consumer electronics and electric vehicle markets call for the development of high energy density Li metal batteries, which have been plagued by poor cyclability. Electrolyte engineering can afford a promising approach to address the issues associated with Li metal batteries and has recently resulted in much improved cycle life under practical conditions. However, gaps still exist between the performance of current Li metal batteries and those required for commercial applications. Further improvements will require systematic analysis of existing electrolyte design methodologies. In this review, we first summarize recent approaches of advanced electrolytes for Li metal batteries paired with high-voltage cathodes. We then extract common features among these advanced electrolytes and finally discuss the future rational design directions and strategies.

Abstract:Electrolytes and the associated electrode-electrolyte interfaces are crucial for the development and application of high-capacity energy storage systems.Specifically,a variety of electrolyte properties,ranging from mechanical(compressibility,vis-cosity),thermal(heat conductivity and capacity),to chemical(solubility,activity,reactivity),transport,and electrochemical(interfa-cial and interphasial),are correlated to the performance of the resultant full energy storage device.In order to facilitate the operation of novel electrode materials,extensive experimental efforts have been devoted to improving these electrolyte properties by tuning the physical design and/or chemical composition.Meanwhile,the recent development of theoretical modeling methods is providing atomistic understandings of the electrolyte's role in regulating the ion transport and enabling a functional interface.In this regard,we stand at a new frontier to take advantage of the revealed mechanistic insights into rationally design novel electrolyte systems.In this review,we first summarize the composition,solvation structure,and transport properties of conventional electrolytes as well as the formation mechanism of the electrode-electrolyte interphase.Moreover,some of the promising energy storage systems are briefly introduced.Further,approaches to stabilize the electrode-electrolyte interphase using novel electrolyte design,including electrolyte additives,high-concentration electrolytes,and solid-state electrolytes,are discussed.Some recent advances in the atom-istic modeling of these aspects are particularly focused to provide a fundamental understanding of electrolytes and a comprehensive guide for future electrolyte design.Finally,we highlight the prospects of theoretical screening of novel electrolytes.

Abstract:With the increasing scale of energy storage, it is urgently demanding for further advancements on battery technologies in terms of energy density, cost, cycle life and safety. The development of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) not only relies on electrodes, but also the functional electrolyte systems to achieve controllable formation of solid electrolyte interphase and high ionic conductivity. In order to satisfy the needs of higher energy density, high-voltage (> 4.3 V) cathodes such as Li-rich layered compounds, olivine LiNiPO 4 , spinel LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 have been extensively studied. However, high-voltage cathode-based LIBs fade rapidly mainly owing to the anodic decomposition of electrolytes, gradually thickening of interfacial passivation layer and vast irreversible capacity loss, hence encountering huge obstacle toward practical applications. To tackle this roadblock, substantial progress has been made toward oxidation-resistant electrolytes to block its side reaction with high-voltage cathodes. In this review, we discuss degradation mechanisms of electrolytes at electrolyte/cathode interface and ideal requirements of electrolytes for high-voltage cathode, as well as summarize recent advances of oxidation-resistant electrolyte optimization mainly from solvents and additives. With these insights, it is anticipated that development of liquid electrolyte tolerable to high-voltage cathode will boost the large-scale practical applications of high-voltage cathode-based LIBs.

Abstract:This review summarizes recent progress of electrolyte design in terms of fast charge, wide range of working temperatures, and long lifespan lithium metal batteries. Lithium metal batteries (LMBs) have attracted considerable interest for use in electric vehicles and as next‐generation energy storage devices because of their high energy density. However, a significant practical drawback with LMBs is the instability of the Li metal/electrolyte interface, with concurrent parasitic reactions and dendrite growth, that leads to low Coulombic efficiency and poor cycle life. Owing to the significant role of electrolytes in batteries, rationally designed electrolytes can improve the electrochemical performance of LMBs and possibly achieve fast charge and a wide range of working temperatures to meet various requirements of the market in the future. Although there are some review papers about electrolytes for LMBs, the focus has been on a single parameter or single performance separately and, therefore, not sufficient for the design of electrolytes for advanced LMBs for a wide range of working environments. This review presents a systematic summary of recent progress made in terms of electrolytes, covering the fundamental understanding of the mechanism, scientific challenges, and strategies to address drawbacks of electrolytes for high‐performance LMBs. The advantages and disadvantages of various electrolyte strategies are also analyzed, yielding suggestions for optimum properties of electrolytes for advanced LMBs applications. Finally, the most promising research directions for electrolytes are discussed briefly.

Abstract:<p>Rechargeable lithium metal batteries (LMBs) have attracted wide attention for future electric vehicles and next‐generation energy storage because of their exceptionally high specific energy density. Recently, the development of electrode materials for LMBs has been extensively discussed and reviewed in the literature, but there have been very few reports that systematically review the status and progress of electrolytes for such applications. Actually, the viability of practical LMBs critically depends on the development of suitable liquid electrolytes due to the high reactivity of Li metals toward most solvents. This paper provides a systematic summary of the background and recent advances of the electrolytes for LMBs with an emphasis on the thermodynamic and kinetic stabilities at the interfaces. In addition, the emerging advanced characterization techniques for understanding the electrolyte–electrode interfaces are surveyed. Finally, a perspective for future directions is provided.</p>

A Computational Review on Localized High‐Concentration Electrolytes in Lithium Batteries

Abstract:The use of localized high‐concentration electrolytes (LHCEs) in lithium batteries has been a focus of attention due to their ability to retain the merits of high‐concentration electrolytes (HCEs) while addressing their drawbacks. This review paper presents the latest computational progress in understanding the characteristics and working mechanism of LHCEs in lithium batteries, using techniques such as density functional theory (DFT), molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD). Results from these simulations offer valuable insights into the redox stability, solvation structures, and interface characteristics of LHCE‐based lithium batteries. Electrolyte engineering plays a vital role in improving the battery performance of lithium batteries. The idea of localized high‐concentration electrolytes that are derived by adding "diluent" in high‐concentration electrolytes has been proposed to retain the merits and alleviate the disadvantages of high‐concentration electrolytes, and it has become the focus of attention in high‐voltage lithium batteries, flame‐retardant lithium batteries, and low‐temperature lithium batteries. Extensive efforts have been made to elucidate the fundamentals of localized high‐concentration electrolytes. This review provides an overview of state‐of‐the‐art computational progress in the studies of localized high‐concentration electrolytes, focusing on the application of computational techniques to analyze the redox stability, solvation structures, and interface characteristics of lithium batteries with localized high‐concentration electrolytes. Integrated with experimental approaches, complementing each other, computational methods are believed to be conducive to understanding the working mechanism and designing localized high‐concentration electrolytes for better lithium batteries in the future.

Abstract:Over the past decades, Li-ion battery (LIB) has turned into one of the most important advances in the history of technology due to its extensive and in-depth impact on our life. Its omnipresence in all electric vehicles, consumer electronics and electric grids relies on the precisely tuned electrochemical dynamics and interactions among the electrolytes and the diversified anode and cathode chemistries therein. With consumers' demand for battery performance ever increasing, more and more stringent requirements are being imposed upon the established equilibria among these LIB components, and it became clear that the state-of-the-art electrolyte systems could no longer sustain the desired technological trajectory. Driven by such gap, researchers started to explore more unconventional electrolyte systems. From superconcentrated solvent-in-salt electrolytes to solid-state electrolytes, the current research realm of novel electrolyte systems has grown to unprecedented levels. In this review, we will avoid discussions on current state-of-the-art electrolytes but instead focus exclusively on unconventional electrolyte systems that represent new concepts.

Abstract:Herein, a review focussed on discussing the future development directions for all‐solid‐state lithium batteries (ASSLBs) based on the high‐voltage cathode is put forward. Considering the promising prospect for rechargeable ASSLBs, their related challenges, failure mechanism, recent progress in electrolytes and cathodes, and practical prospects are discussed in detail. All‐solid‐state lithium batteries (ASSLBs) have become a recent research hotspot because of their excellent safety performance. In order to better reflect their superiority, high‐voltage cathodes should be applied to enhance the energy density of solid batteries to compete with commercial liquid batteries. However, the introduction of high‐voltage cathodes suffers from many problems, such as low electrochemical stability, inferior interface chemical stability between cathode and electrolyte, poor mechanical contact, and gas evolution. These drawbacks significantly influence the battery performance, even causing battery failure and hindering the commercialization of solid‐state batteries. This paper first reviews the above failure mechanisms of high‐voltage cathode‐based ASSLBs from different perspectives. Then, recent advances in solid‐state electrolytes for ASSLBs are summarized, mainly including polymer solid electrolytes, sulfide solid electrolytes, and oxide solid electrolytes. In addition, the influence of the cathode materials is also highly critical, and strategies to improve electrochemical performance are put forward, which can be divided into coating protection, synthesis modification, and structure improvement. Finally, guidelines for the future development of solid‐state batteries are also discussed.

Abstract:Lithium metal is regarded as one of the most promising anode materials due to its intrinsic superiority including the lowest electrode potential (−3.04 V vs. SHE) and impressive theoretical specific capacity (3860 mAh/g). Even though the study of lithium metal batteries (LMBs) can be traced back to the 1970s, the practical promotion has been hindered by some substantial obstacles, such as the growth of dendrite and the low Coulombic efficiency (CE). During the past decade, extensive investigative approaches have been devoted to stabilizing the deposition of lithium metal as well as inhibiting the undesirable parasitic reactions. Electrolytes play a crucial role in the deposition of lithium, and that explains the reason why a great deal of progress has been attained in this field. This review summarizes the representative work in recent years, including the optimization of conventional electrolyte components, as well as the novel materials in a solvent, Li salt, and additives. Moreover, high-concentration electrolytes and localized high-concentration electrolytes are summarized representing two fruitful fields, based on the emerging theories of lithium-ion coordination and solvation sheath layer. Finally, some prospects are proposed to lead us closer to the large-scale application of LMBs.

Abstract:Lithium‐sulfur (Li−S) batteries are one of the most promising candidates for next‐generation energy storage devices. The electrolyte affects the redox mechanism of Li−S batteries, which needs to be focused. In this review, the electrolytes are reviewed according to the "solid‐liquid‐solid" and "solid‐solid" conversion of the active material sulfur. The direction of the development of Li−S battery is prospected. Lithium–sulfur batteries with high energy density are considered to be one of the most promising candidates for the next‐generation energy storage devices. Electrolyte as the medium for Li+ transportation between the electrodes, also plays a crucial role in inhibiting the dissolution and diffusion of lithium polysulfides in Li–S batteries. The working mechanism of Li–S batteries in different electrolytes is classified into "solid‐liquid‐solid" and "solid‐solid" conversions. Under the "solid‐liquid‐solid" conversion, Li–S batteries would inevitably face the challenges such as "shuttle effect" that lead to poor cycle performance, and under the "solid‐solid" conversion, they would face interface mismatch that limits the utilization of sulfur with low energy density, while both conversion mechanisms cause uncontrollable Li dendrites on anode. According to the conversion mechanism, electrolytes can be divided into ether‐based, ionic liquid‐based, gel polymer electrolytes, and polymer‐based solid‐state electrolytes with "solid‐liquid‐solid" conversion, as well as carbonate‐based electrolytes and oxide/sulfide‐based solid‐state electrolytes with "solid‐solid" conversion. Based on the conversion mechanism of active materials in different electrolytes, the current status on the strategies from multiple perspectives are summarized to improve the electrochemical performance, with the hope to provide a comprehensive guideline toward the development of suitable electrolytes for Li–S batteries.

Not only will that continue, but they are also now powering plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and zero-emission vehicles. There is impressive progress in the exploration of electrode materials for lithium-based batteries because the electrodes (mainly the cathode) are the limiting factors in terms of overall capacity inside a battery. However, more and more interests have been focused on the electrolytes, which determines the current (power) density, the time stability, the reliability of a battery and the formation of solid electrolyte interface. This review will introduce five types of electrolytes for room temperature Li-based batteries including 1) non-aqueous electrolytes, 2) aqueous solutions, 3) ionic liquids, 4) polymer electrolytes, and 5) hybrid electrolytes. Besides, electrolytes beyond lithium-based systems such as sodium-, magnesium-, calcium-, zinc- and aluminum-based batteries will also be briefly discussed.
