Abstract:Lithium nickel manganese oxide (LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4) is a promising cathode material for next-generation lithium-ion rechargeable batteries due to its high operating voltage of 4.7 V vs. Li/Li+. However, there are lots of drawbacks in using LNMO as a cathode material because of the liquid electrolyte instability. When carbonate-based electrolytes are decomposed at high cut-off voltage, they generate a hydrofluoric acid which attacks the surface of LNMO. This unwanted parasitic reaction at the electrode-electrolyte interface accelerates the decay in cycle life. In this work, Ionic liquid (1M LiFSI in Pyr13FSI) is adopted as an electrolyte for LNMO cathode material. Highly stable ionic liquid mitigates dissolution of Ni and Mn even in the high cut-off voltage of 5.1 V vs. Li/Li+. X-ray fluorescence mapping analysis confirmed the mitigation of dissolution by building up a 2D image of the varying composition of a sample.

Abstract:Development of rechargeable lithium metal battery (LMB) remains a challenge because of uneven lithium deposition during repeated cycles of charge and discharge. Ionic liquids have received intensive scientific interest as electrolytes because of their exceptional thermal and electrochemical stabilities. Ionic liquid and ionic-liquid-nanoparticle hybrid electrolytes based on 1-methy-3-propylimidazolium (IM) and 1-methy-3-propylpiperidinium (PP) have been synthesized and their ionic conductivity, electrochemical stability, mechanical properties, and ability to promote stable Li electrodeposition investigated. PP-based electrolytes were found to be more conductive and substantially more efficient in suppressing dendrite formation on cycled lithium anodes; as little as 11 wt % PP-IL in a PC-LiTFSI host produces more than a ten-fold increase in cell lifetime. Both PP- and IM-based nanoparticle hybrid electrolytes provide up to 10 000-fold improvements in cell lifetime than anticipated based on their mechanical modulus alone. Galvanostatic cycling measurements in Li/Li4 Ti5 O12 half cells using IL-nanoparticle hybrid electrolytes reveal more than 500 cycles of trouble-free operation and enhanced rate capability.

Abstract:We demonstrate a novel rechargeable energy storage system having a metallic lithium negative electrode and a liquid–solid hybrid positive electrode of Fe3+/Fe2+/Fe in N,N-Dimethylformamide, which are separated by an impermeable NASICON–type Li1.4Al0.4Ge0.2Ti1.4(PO4)3–epoxy resin composite film with a lithium ion conductivity of ca. 5.0 × 10−4 S cm−1. The discharge curve for the battery shows two plateaus. The first plateau corresponds to Li + FeCl3 = LiCl + FeCl2, while the second one is associated with 2 Li + FeCl2 = 2 LiCl + Fe. In the process of reduction of Fe3+ to Fe2+, it delivers a stable discharge capacity of ca. 110 mAh gFeCl3−1 with a Coulombic efficiency higher than 95% and is capable of enduring over 60 circles at a high current density of 1.0 mA cm−2 without any catalyst. Furthermore, a stable discharge capacity up to ca. 455 mAh gFeCl3−1 is achieved for conversion of FeCl3/FeCl2/Fe with a three–electron reaction. This work demonstrates a proof of feasibility of hybrid liquid–solid hybrid positive electrode, since these reactions are reversible confirmed by x–ray diffraction patterns and EDX mapping test.

Abstract:Solid polymer electrolytes are potential replacement of liquid electrolytes due to their much less flammability and leakage. Among them, poly (vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP)-based electrolytes have several advantages including improved processability and electrochemical stability. Unfortunately, poor ionic conductivity and mechanical properties due to high plasticizer concentration hinder their practical applications. Herein, we address these issues by exploiting the solvation effect in the electrolyte through tuning the amount of residual N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) and lithium salts. Moreover, by blending with porous carbon (PC) the mechanical integrity of the PVDF-HFP electrolytes is substantially enhanced due to improved interfacial bonding and specific surface area. The appropriate value of electrical conductivity and highly porous morphology of PC also meet the ionic transport and electronic insulation requirements. With the absorbed residual NMP as plasticizer and complexed with Li ions to formLi[NMP](3)(+) , ionic conductivity and amorphicity are improved. By elucidating the solvent and salt concentration interplay, Li-ion conductivity of up to 0.56 mS cm(-,) wide electrochemical window of 5 V versus Li/Li+ and 1000 h of cycling stability (versus Li, 0.2 mA/cm(2)) are obtained. These findings afford a novel electrolyte design guideline for enhancing interfacial compatibility and cycling through hybridization and ion solvation to develop practical lithium batteries.

Abstract:The intrinsic limitations of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) with regard to safety, cost, and the availability of raw materials have promoted research on so-called "post-LIBs". The recent intense research of post-LIBs provides an invaluable lesson that existing electrode materials used in LIBs may not perform as well in post-LIBs, calling for new material designs compliant with emerging batteries based on new chemistries. One promising approach in this direction is the development of materials with intercalated water or organic molecules, as these materials demonstrate superior electrochemical performance in emerging battery systems. The enlarged ionic channel dimensions and effective shielding of the electrostatic interaction between carrier ions and the lattice host are the origins of the observed electrochemical performance. Moreover, these intercalants serve as interlayer pillars to sustain the framework for prolonged cycles. Representative examples of such intercalated materials applied to batteries based on Li+, Na+, Mg2+, and Zn2+ ions and supercapacitors are considered, along with their impact in materials research.

Abstract:<p>From basic research to industry process, battery energy storage systems have played a great role in the informatization, mobility, and intellectualization of modern human society. Some potential systems such as Li, Na, K, Mg, Zn, and Al secondary batteries have attracted much attention to maintain social progress and sustainable development. As one of the components in batteries, electrolytes play an important role in the upgrade and breakthrough of battery technology. Since room‐temperature ionic liquids (ILs) feature high conductivity, nonflammability, nonvolatility, high thermal stability, and wide electrochemical window, they have been widely applied in various battery systems and show great potential in improving battery stability, kinetics performance, energy density, service life, and safety. Thus, it is a right time to summarize these progresses. In this review, the composition and classification of various ILs and their recent applications as electrolytes in diverse metal‐ion batteries (Li, Na, K, Mg, Zn, Al) are outlined to enhance the battery performances.</p>

Abstract:Understanding the ionic transport behaviors in hybrid solid electrolytes (HSEs) is critically important for the practical realization of rechargeable Li‐metal batteries (LMBs) with high safety. Herein, it is reported a new solid “Ionogel‐in‐Ceramic” electrolyte by using the Li1.3Al0.3Ti1.7(PO4)3 (LATP) ceramic particles as a framework and “Poly(ionic liquid)s‐in‐Salt” (“PolyIL‐in‐Salt”) ionogel as an ionic bridge via a simple pressing process. The “PolyIL‐in‐Salt” ionogel precursor is designed to improve the chemical compatibility at solid–solid interfaces. Molecular dynamics simulations reveal the roles of salt concentrations on the distribution of co‐coordination of “PolyIL‐in‐Salt” ionogel. Moreover, the “PolyIL‐in‐Salt” ionogel containing co‐coordination not only inhibits the parasitic reactions between LATP and Li anode but also provides efficient Li+ conducting pathways. Benefiting from the designed structure, the “Ionogel‐in‐Ceramic” HSE exhibits an excellent ionic conductivity of 0.17 mS cm−1 at 50 °C. Meanwhile, the as‐formed solid electrolyte enables a long cycle of over 3500 h in Li/Li symmetric cell. Further, all‐solid‐state lithium metal batteries fabricated on LiFePO4 and high voltage LiCoO2 cathodes deliver 160.0 mAh g−1, 125.0 mAh g−1, respectively. This study sheds light on the rational design of solid‐state electrolytes with efficient interparticle Li+ conduction, compatible, stable, compact, and durable electrode–electrolyte interfaces. A novel type “Ionogel‐in‐Ceramic” hybrid electrolyte exhibits the merits of both soft ionogel electrolyte and the inorganic solid ceramic electrolyte is proposed. The synergistic coupling mechanism in the distribution of co‐coordination and interaction between inorganic filler and lithium salt are systemically studied. Understanding molecular‐level interfacial interaction/transport of as‐developed electrolyte will boost the development of next‐generation batteries.

Abstract:<p>Rechargeable lithium metal batteries (LMBs) have attracted wide attention for future electric vehicles and next‐generation energy storage because of their exceptionally high specific energy density. Recently, the development of electrode materials for LMBs has been extensively discussed and reviewed in the literature, but there have been very few reports that systematically review the status and progress of electrolytes for such applications. Actually, the viability of practical LMBs critically depends on the development of suitable liquid electrolytes due to the high reactivity of Li metals toward most solvents. This paper provides a systematic summary of the background and recent advances of the electrolytes for LMBs with an emphasis on the thermodynamic and kinetic stabilities at the interfaces. In addition, the emerging advanced characterization techniques for understanding the electrolyte–electrode interfaces are surveyed. Finally, a perspective for future directions is provided.</p>

Abstract:Nanoscaled AgO with high purity was synthesized by a chemical oxidation method. It can perform well as the cathode material in the proposed Li-AgO battery which coupled a Li metal anode and employed an aqueous//LISICON//nonaqueous electrolyte. The assembled Li-AgO cell demonstrated both a higher energy density and a superior power performance than its predecessors.

Abstract:Ionic liquids (ILs) are considered as appealing alternative electrolytes for application in rechargeable batteries, including next-generation sodium-ion batteries, because of their safe and eco-friendly nature, resulting from their extremely low volatility. In this work, two groups of advanced pyrrolidinium-based IL electrolytes are concerned, made by mixing sodium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (NaFSI) or sodium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (NaTFSI) salts salts with N-methyl- N-propylpyrrolidinium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (Pyr13FSI), N-butyl- N-methylpyrrolidinium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (Pyr14FSI), and N-butyl- N-methylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (Pyr13FSI). The characterization of eight different electrolytes, including single anion electrolytes and binary anion mixtures, in terms of thermal properties, density, viscosity, and conductivity, as well as electrochemical stability window and cycling performance in room-temperature sodium cells, is reported here. Among all of the blends, those containing Pyr14FSI outperform the others in terms of cell performance enabling the layered P2-Na0.6Ni0.22Al0.11Mn0.66O2 cathode to deliver about 140 mAh g-1 for more than 200 cycles.

Abstract:Depleting fossil fuels has put pressing need for the search of alternative energy resources. Solar and wind energy resources are being considered one of the viable solutions. However, these intermittent sources require efficient energy storage systems in terms of rechargeable Li batteries. In Li batteries, electrolyte is one of the most important components to determine the performance, as it conducts the ions between the electrodes. In battery, mostly liquid electrolyte is used as it shows high ionic conductivity and electrode/electrolyte contact which help to reduce the internal resistance. But these are not electrochemically very stable and raised some major problems such as reactivity with electrode, dissolution of electrode ions, leakage, volatility, fast Li dendrite growth, etc. Therefore, in order to improve its electrochemical performance, selection of electrolyte is an important issue. In the present study, ionic liquid (IL)-based polymer electrolyte is used over liquid electrolyte in which IL acts as a plasticizer and improves ionic conductivity and amorphicity. These electrolytes have high thermal and electrochemical stability, therefore, can be used in high voltage Li battery. Also, their mechanical stability helps to suppress Li dendrites growth. Therefore, polymer electrolytes can open a new way in the progression of battery application.
In-situ Synthesis of Fluoropolymer-Grafted Nanohybrid Electrolyte As Ion Reservoir for Li-metal Batteries

Abstract:Heterogeneity in ion flux of electrolyte materials largely dictates the growth of lithium dendrites and performance of lithium metal anode, which is considered “holy grail” to enable safe rechargeable batteries with ultrahigh energy density. This challenge is even more prominent in polymer-based electrolytes, which thereby leads to uneven ion distribution and mobility of ionic charge carriers, disturbing electrodeposition. In this work, we propose an ion-immobilization strategy achieved by an in-situ grafted nanohybrid fluoropolymer electrolyte, which takes advantages of unique weak solvation of fluoropolymers to tether anions to solvation structure of Li+. Such regulation in conjunction with the well dispersed nanometric aggregates, enables polymer electrolytes serving as ion reservoirs with strengthened weakly-solvating effect. As such, we suppressed formation of dendritic lithium by inducing uniform ion distribution, which significantly extended cell lifetime to over 1900 h in electrodeposition and prolonged charge-discharge cycles of in-situ lithium metal batteries up to 4.6 V at ambient temperature. This work demonstrates a new approach to regulate interfacial chemistry of Li anode and access high-performance polymer-based electrolytes.

Abstract:Ionogels, which are being considered as quasi-solid electrolytes for energy-storage devices, exhibited technical superiority in terms of nonflammability, negligible vapor pressure, remarkable thermostability, high ionic conductivity, and broad electrochemical stability window. However, their applications in lithium metal batteries (LMBs) have been hindered by several issues: poor compatibility with Li-metal anodes and high-voltage cathodes, high viscosity, and inadequate wettability. Little attention has been paid to ionogel-based low-concentration electrolytes, despite their potential advantages in terms of Li+ mobility, viscosity, electrode wettability, and cost. Here, we demonstrate the surprising capabilities of localized high-concentration ionogel (LHCI) and dilutedly localized high-concentration ionogel (DLHCI) electrolytes, utilizing the non-solvating fluorinated ether 1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethyl-2,2,3,3-tetrafluoropropyl ether, to realize high-voltage quasi-solid-state lithium metal batteries (QSLMBs). Notably, the DLHCI electrolyte not only delivers superior ionic conductivity of 3.93 × 10−3 S cm−1 but also provides a high Li plating/stripping Coulombic efficiency exceeding 99%. Moreover, it significantly enhances anodic stability when paired with 4.4 V LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NCM811) and 4.8 V LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 (LNMO). Consequently, substantial improvement in cycling performance of QSLMBs has been realized with the DLHCI electrolyte.
