Abstract:Poly(ionic liquid)s combine the unique properties of ionic liquids (ILs) within ionic polymers holding significant promise for energy storage applications. We report here the synthesis and characterization of a new family of poly(ionic liquid)s synthesized from cationic piperazinium ionic liquid monomers. The cationic poly(acrylamide piperazinium) in combination with sulfonamide anions like TFSI and FSI were characterized as solid polymer electrolytes. The polymer electrolytes in combination with pyrrolidonium ionic liquids and LiFSI showed high ionic conductivity, 5×10−3 S cm−1 at 100 °C. Piperazinium polymer electrolytes showed excellent compatibility with lithium metal reversible plating and stripping at high current density and low temperature 40 °C. Abstract:Development of rechargeable lithium metal battery (LMB) remains a challenge because of uneven lithium deposition during repeated cycles of charge and discharge. Ionic liquids have received intensive scientific interest as electrolytes because of their exceptional thermal and electrochemical stabilities. Ionic liquid and ionic-liquid-nanoparticle hybrid electrolytes based on 1-methy-3-propylimidazolium (IM) and 1-methy-3-propylpiperidinium (PP) have been synthesized and their ionic conductivity, electrochemical stability, mechanical properties, and ability to promote stable Li electrodeposition investigated. PP-based electrolytes were found to be more conductive and substantially more efficient in suppressing dendrite formation on cycled lithium anodes; as little as 11 wt % PP-IL in a PC-LiTFSI host produces more than a ten-fold increase in cell lifetime. Both PP- and IM-based nanoparticle hybrid electrolytes provide up to 10 000-fold improvements in cell lifetime than anticipated based on their mechanical modulus alone. Galvanostatic cycling measurements in Li/Li4 Ti5 O12 half cells using IL-nanoparticle hybrid electrolytes reveal more than 500 cycles of trouble-free operation and enhanced rate capability.

Abstract:Solid polymer electrolytes are potential replacement of liquid electrolytes due to their much less flammability and leakage. Among them, poly (vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP)-based electrolytes have several advantages including improved processability and electrochemical stability. Unfortunately, poor ionic conductivity and mechanical properties due to high plasticizer concentration hinder their practical applications. Herein, we address these issues by exploiting the solvation effect in the electrolyte through tuning the amount of residual N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) and lithium salts. Moreover, by blending with porous carbon (PC) the mechanical integrity of the PVDF-HFP electrolytes is substantially enhanced due to improved interfacial bonding and specific surface area. The appropriate value of electrical conductivity and highly porous morphology of PC also meet the ionic transport and electronic insulation requirements. With the absorbed residual NMP as plasticizer and complexed with Li ions to formLi[NMP](3)(+) , ionic conductivity and amorphicity are improved. By elucidating the solvent and salt concentration interplay, Li-ion conductivity of up to 0.56 mS cm(-,) wide electrochemical window of 5 V versus Li/Li+ and 1000 h of cycling stability (versus Li, 0.2 mA/cm(2)) are obtained. These findings afford a novel electrolyte design guideline for enhancing interfacial compatibility and cycling through hybridization and ion solvation to develop practical lithium batteries.

Abstract:In this study, an organic‐inorganic hybrid polymer membrane is successfully designed and developed by grafting stearyl methacrylate (SMA) side chains onto the backbone of the P(VDF‐HFP) copolymer followed by blending with varying amounts of imidazolium ionic liquids functionalized ZrO2 nanoparticles. Different microporous gel polymer electrolytes (MGPEs) are prepared by immersing the membranes into a LiTFSI salt‐dissolved ionic liquid electrolyte. The membranes' crystallinity, surface morphology, porosity, and thermal stability are investigated using various characterization techniques. The copolymer membrane blended with 60 wt% functionalized nanoparticles exhibits the highest porosity of 64.5 %, which allows it to achieve a maximum electrolyte uptake of 387 wt%. That enables the corresponding MGPE to achieve the highest room temperature lithium ion conductivity of ~5.34 ×10‒3 S cm−1 with a wide electrochemical stability window and good electrochemical stability against Li metal. Leveraging these advantageous characteristics, the lab‐scale truly solid‐state Li|MGPE|LiFePO4 and Li|MGPE|LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 cells demonstrate excellent rate capability and reversible cycling stability while maintaining high specific capacities (up to 154 and 172 mAh g‐1, respectively, at 0.5 C) with >99.0% coulombic efficiency over 100 cycles. Such exceptional interfacial compatibility with both low‐ and high‐voltage cathodes establishes the applicability of these newly developed MGPEs in next‐generation all‐solid‐state lithium‐metal batteries.

Abstract:Here, we propose a piperidine-based ionic liquid additive. The electrostatic shielding effect of the piperidine cation (PP13+) effectively inhibits the growth of lithium dendrites. Simultaneously, the redox activity of the bromine anion synergistically reduces the overpotential. This approach significantly improves the cycling performance of lithium-oxygen batteries.

Abstract:Metal-organic framework (MOF)-based solid-like electrolytes have attracted more prospective due to the combined merits of solid-state electrolytes and liquid electrolytes. However, most MOF-based solid-like electrolytes using organic liquid electrolytes cannot fundamentally solve the safety issues of lithium-metal batteries, and the ionic conductivity and mechanical strength of the electrolytes should be further enhanced. Herein, the ionic liquid-impregnated polypropylene (PP) porous membrane with integrally distributed ZIF-8 nanoparticles is designed. The solid-like electrolyte possesses an increased ionic conductivity of 2.09 × 10-4 S cm-1 at 25 °C, lithium-ion transference number (0.45), mechanical strength, electrochemical window, and excellent nanowetted interfaces. Furthermore, the Li symmetrical cell shows excellent Li plating/stripping properties for 550 h at 0.1 mA cm-2 and 0.1 mA h cm-2. The LiFePO4/Li full battery with the solid-like electrolyte demonstrates an excellent rate capability and cycling stability with the initial discharge capacity of 157.9 mA h g-1 and a capacity retention ratio of 91.23% after 450 cycles at 0.2 C. The work offers a new avenue toward MOF-based solid-like electrolytes for high-safety lithium-metal batteries.

Abstract:Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) garner tremendous attention for both enabling higher energy density battery chemistry and alleviating the safety concerns of liquid electrolytes, but the practical utilizations of SPEs are severely hindered by the limited room temperature ionic conductivity, low transference number and huge interface impedance. Unlike the polymer chain movement in traditional SPEs, in the present work, we develop novel "polymer-in-plastic salts" electrolytes (PIPSEs) via a high weight ratio of plastic salts to polymer in which polymer just function as framework so that non-flammable, superionic conductive and flexible SPEs can be obtained. Also, the high content of plastic salts in PIPSEs can wet electrodes and form compatible solid electrolyte interface (SEI) with lithium metal. As a consequence, solid-state dendrite-free symmetric Li cells with PIPSEs show ultralong cycle life over 1000 h under up to 2.0 mA cm−2 and Li/LiFePO4 and high-voltage Li/LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 cells utilizing above PIPSEs exhibit excellent cycle performance and appealing rate performance. It is anticipated that our work provides a new strategy for the next-generation solid-state batteries.

Abstract:Heterogeneity in ion flux of electrolyte materials largely dictates the growth of lithium dendrites and performance of lithium metal anode, which is considered “holy grail” to enable safe rechargeable batteries with ultrahigh energy density. This challenge is even more prominent in polymer-based electrolytes, which thereby leads to uneven ion distribution and mobility of ionic charge carriers, disturbing electrodeposition. In this work, we propose an ion-immobilization strategy achieved by an in-situ grafted nanohybrid fluoropolymer electrolyte, which takes advantages of unique weak solvation of fluoropolymers to tether anions to solvation structure of Li+. Such regulation in conjunction with the well dispersed nanometric aggregates, enables polymer electrolytes serving as ion reservoirs with strengthened weakly-solvating effect. As such, we suppressed formation of dendritic lithium by inducing uniform ion distribution, which significantly extended cell lifetime to over 1900 h in electrodeposition and prolonged charge-discharge cycles of in-situ lithium metal batteries up to 4.6 V at ambient temperature. This work demonstrates a new approach to regulate interfacial chemistry of Li anode and access high-performance polymer-based electrolytes.

Abstract:PEO-based electrolytes are promising for solid-state lithium metal batteries, but their low ionic conductivity and unstable interfacial compatibility with electrodes are the bottlenecks restricting their further applications. Herein, a unique ionic liquid (Pyr 14 TFSI)-encapsulated cross-linked polymer electrolyte with abundant ether–oxygen repeat units (C-SPE-IL) is proposed and prepared through an in-situ thermal polymerization process. The Pyr 14 + cations of ionic liquid present a stronger affinity towards ether–oxygen groups by means of tight coordinated interactions, which promotes ionic liquid encapsulated uniformly in the polymer matrix to release more mobile Li ions into ionic liquid and create multiple ionic conduction highways in both ionic liquid and polymer matrix. The C-SPE-IL shows a much higher ionic conductivity of 3.98 × 10 −4 S/cm at 30 °C. Moreover, tight interfaces with LiF– and Li 3 N– rich components between C-SPE-IL and Li anode are constructed to ensure effective suppression of lithium dendrites during cycling. The LiFePO 4 /Li batteries using C-SPE-IL present stable cycling performances at both 35 °C and 60 °C. This work provides a facile and accessible approach to design novel SPE with both ionic conduction highways and good interfacial stability for high-performance solid-state lithium metal batteries.

Abstract:An in situ hybrid crosslinking polymerized TiO2 nanoparticles are proposed for the preparation of a highly stable polymer composite electrolyte (NHCPE) with an extremely high ionic conductivity of 1.74 × 10−3 S cm−1 and a lithium‐ion transfer number of 0.725 at 25 °C. The proposed PDOL@nanoTiO2 (NHCPE) greatly inhibits the defects of easy agglomeration of composite electrolytes, and solves the problems of easy decomposition, low thermal stability, and poor safety of polyether electrolytes. The composite solid electrolyte, which combines the advantages of inorganic conductors and organic polymer electrolytes, has become a crucial strategy for the construction of solid‐state batteries. However, the physical deposition and agglomeration of traditional composite fillers seriously affect their structural uniformity and ion transport performance, and the construction of uniform and stable composite electrolytes is still an insurmountable challenge. Herein, a strategy of in situ hybrid crosslinking polymerization of TiO2 nanoparticles is proposed for highly stable polymer composite electrolytes (NHCPE) with an ultrahigh ionic conductivity of 1.74 × 10−3 S cm−1 at 25 °C, and a high lithium‐ion transference number of 0.725. These properties enable the composed lithium symmetric battery to be stably deposited/plating off at 0.5 mA cm−2 for more than 1000 h. Moreover, the assembled LFP|PDOL@nanoTiO2|Li battery exhibits a superior specific discharge capacity of 142.6 mAh g−1 at 1 C and 25 °C, and an ultrahigh capacity retention rate of 90% after 1000 cycles. The proposed PDOL@nanoTiO2 NHCPE greatly inhibits the defects of easy agglomeration of composite electrolytes, solves the problems of easy decomposition, low thermal stability, and poor safety of polyether electrolytes, and opens up a new way for the design and industrial application of high‐stability composite polymer electrolytes.

High performing ionanofluid electrolyte with higher lithium salt concentration for safer lithium metal batteries

Abstract:A new class of high-performance pyrrolidinium cation based ionanofluid electrolytes with higher lithium salt concentration are developed. The electrolytes are formed by dispersing imidazolium ionic liquid functionalized TiO2 nanoparticles in low conducting, 0.6 M lithium salt doped N-alkyl-N-butylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (Pyr14TFSI) ionic liquid (IL) hosted electrolyte. Viscosity, ionic conductivity and thermal properties of these electrolytes are compared with well studied 0.2 M salt doped Pyr14TFSI IL-based electrolyte. The highly crystalline 0.6 M lithium salt dissolved IL-based electrolytes gradually become amorphous with the increasing dispersion of surface functionalized nanoparticles within it. The ionic conductivity of the electrolytes shows unusual viscosity decoupled characteristics and at the 5.0 wt% nanoparticle dispersion it attains a maximum value, higher than that of pure IL host. As compared to pure IL-based electrolytes, the ionanofluid electrolyte also possesses a significantly higher value of lithium ion transference number. The Li/LiMn2O4 cell with the best conducting ionanofluid electrolyte delivers a discharge capacity of about 131 mAh g-1 at 25 degree C at a current density of 24 mA g-1, much higher than that obtained in 0.2 M Li salt dissociated Pyr14TFSI electrolyte (87 mAh g-1). Superior interfacial compatibility between ionanofluid electrolyte and electrodes as indicated by the excellent rate performance with outstanding capacity retention of the cell as compared to pure IL-based analogue, further establish great application potentiality of this optimized newly developed electrolyte for safer LMBs.

Abstract:Composite polyethylene-oxide/garnet electrolytes containing LiTFSI as the lithium salt have a Li+ conductivity σLi > 10−4Scm−1 at 55°C and a low plating/stripping impedance of a dendrite-free Li-metal anode; they have been developed for a safe solid-state Li-metal rechargeable battery. Composites consisting of “ceramic-in-polymer” to “polymer-in-ceramic” that are flexible and mechanically robust are fabricated by hot-pressing. Safe pouch cells with a remarkable flexibility have been fabricated. Solid-state LiFePO4|Li batteries with electrolytes of “ceramic-in-polymer” and “polymer-in-ceramic” deliver excellent cycling stability with high discharge capacities (139.1mAhg–1 with capacity retention of 93.6% after 100 cycles) and high capacity retention (103.6% with coulombic efficiency of 100% after 50 cycles) at 0.2C and 55°C. Both kinds of electrolytes can be applied to solid-state lithium batteries.
PIM-1 As an Artificial Solid Electrolyte Interphase for Stable Lithium Metal Anode in High-Performance Batteries

Abstract:Lithium metal anode is a promising electrode with high theoretical specific capacity and low electrode potential.However,its unstable interface and low Coulombic efficiency,resulting from the dendritic growth of lithium,limits its commercial application.PIM-1(PIM:polymer of intrinsic microporosity),which is a polymer with abundant micropores,exhibits high rigidity and flexibility with contorted spirocenters in the backbone,and is an ideal candidate for artificial solid electrolyte interphases(SEI).In this work,a PIM-1 membrane was synthesized and fabricated as a protective membrane on the surface of an electrode to facilitate the uniform flux of Li ions and act as a stable interface for the lithium plating/stripping process.Nodule-like lithium with rounded edges was observed under the PIM-1 membrane.The Li@PIM-1 electrode delivered a high average Coulombic efficiency(99.7%),excellent cyclability(80%capacity retention rate after 600 cycles at 1 C),and superior rate capability(125.3 m Ah g -1 at 10 C).Electrochemical impedance spectrum(EIS)showed that the PIM-1 membrane could lower the diffusion rate of Li + significantly and change the rate-determining step from charge transfer to Li + diffusion.Thus,the PIM-1 membrane is proven to act as an artificial SEI to facilitate uniform and stable deposition of lithium,in favor of obtaining a compact and dense Li-plating pattern.This work extends the application of PIMs in the field of lithium batteries and provides ideas for the construction of artificial SEI.

Herein, an ionic liquid with a long aliphatic chain (N-methyl-N-decyl pyrrolidinium (Pyr1(10) + ) bis(trifluoromethanesulphonyl)imide (TFSI - )) is introduced as a non-consuming electrostatic shielding additive into the ether-based electrolyte. The admirable compatibility of Pyr1(10) + cation with Li metal is verified via electrochemical analysis, and the adsorption of Pyr1(10) + on the Li-metal/electrolyte interface is confirmed by Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy technique. Through redistributing the Li ions on the surface of Li metal, the growth of Li dendrites is suppressed, so as to improve the cycling performance of Li metal anodes in symmetric cells, asymmetric cells and Li||LiFePO 4 full cells with low N/P ratio (3:1). This study provides new insights into revealing the electrostatic shielding mechanism of regulating Li metal deposition and prolonging the long-term cycling.

Abstract:Solid-state electrolytes have good mechanical and thermal stability to meet the safety and performance of advanced lithium-based rechargeable battery technologies. However, the drawbacks such as high interfacial impedance and low ionic conductivity of the solid-state polymer electrolytes at room temperature are the current demanding challenges that need to be addressed. Here, we report hybrid polymer composite electrolyte that is composed of a chitosan composite polymer electrolyte soaked with a slightly liquid electrolyte. The hybrid polymer composite electrolyte has a high ionic conductivity about 6.8x10(-4) Scm(-1) with a low interfacial impedance at room temperature and outstanding flexibility. The lithium-metal/LiFePO4 solid-state cell using this hybrid polymer composite electrolyte can be operated at room temperature maintaining a high cathode capacity of 120 mA h g(-1) for 130 cycles. This chitosan/poly(ethylene oxide)-based hybrid polymer composite electrolyte system provides a promising direction for the creation of novel solid-electrolyte, which meets both high ionic conductivity and low interfacial impedance requirements for practical solid-polymer batteries.
