Abstract:A general mathematical model for analyzing and predicting the void fraction profiles in the moderator cell of a Cold Neutron Source (CNS) is developed in this paper. The model is validated by comparing the results calculated from the developed model to that published in previous literatures and that obtained in the related experiments. The model is then employed to explore the influence of various factors on void fraction profiles in the moderator cell, including the diameter of the boiling vapor bubbles, the density and viscosity of the fluid, the total heating power. The model calculations indicate that the void fraction in the moderator cell increases with the viscosity of the liquid, decreases as the size of bubbles increases, and increase linearly with the heating power. The model and the calculation results will provide theoretical supports for the design of the moderator cell of CNS.

Abstract:A physical model is developed for analyzing and evaluating the void fraction profiles in the moderator cell of the Cold Neutron Source (CNS) of the China Advanced Research Reactor (CARR), which is now constructing in the China Institute of Atomic Energy (CIAE). The results derived from the model are compared with the related experimental data and its propriety is verified. The model is then used to explore the influence of various factors, including the diameter of boiling vapor bubbles, liquid density, liquid viscosity and the total heating power acted on the moderator cell, on the void fraction profiles in the cell. The results calculated with the present model indicate that the void fraction in the moderator cell increases linearly with heating power, and increases with the liquid viscosity, but decreases as the size of bubbles increases, and increases linearly with heating power. For the case where hydrogen is being used as a moderator, calculation results show that the void fraction in the moderator cell may be less than 30%, which is the maximum void fraction permitted from the nuclear physics point of view. The model and the calculation results will help to obtain insight of the mechanism that controls the void fraction distribution in the moderator cell, and provide theoretical supports for the moderator cell design.

Abstract:The void fraction at different heights in the annular channel of moderator cell mockup was measured with a differential pressure transducer. The tests proved that the ratio of surface tension to density of liquid phase is the main factor that determines the physical properties on void fraction. The larger the ratio, the smaller the void fraction. The ratio of surface tension to density of Freon 113 is lower than that of liquid hydrogen. Therefore, Freon 113 can be used as working fluid to study the void fraction in the hydrogen two-phase thermo-siphon loop in the cold neutron source (CNS) of China Advanced Research Reactor (CARR)), and the results are conservative.

Abstract:The mathematical model developed in a previous paper is improved in the present paper for analyzing and evaluating the void fraction profiles in the crescent-shape moderator cell of the Cold Neutron Source (CNS) of the China Advanced Research Reactor (CARR) which is now under construction in the China Institute of Atomic Energy (CIAE). The model is then applied to the case of the CARR-CNS with liquid hydrogen as a moderator and the void fraction in the crescent-shape moderator cell of the CARR-CNS is evaluated. The calculation results show that the void fraction in the crescent-shape moderator cell less than 20%. The model and the calculation results will help to obtain insight of the mechanism that controls the void fraction distribution in the crescent-shape moderator cell, and provide theoretical supports for the moderator cell construction.

Abstract:Phase-field modeling of void ensemble development under simultaneous generation of vacancies and interstitials is considered. Void nucleation is treated as precipitation in a metastable point-defect solution via classical nucleation theory, driven by stochastic fluctuations arising both from correlated point-defect production in collision cascades and random diffusion jumps. A statistical approach derives a formulation in which driving forces for the evolution of the void ensemble can be modeled through a Cahn–Hilliard-type functional. The functional is not equivalent to the actual thermodynamic potential when vacancies and SIAs are simultaneously present, but the model is thermodynamically consistent and satisfies the fluctuation–dissipation theorem in the thermodynamic limit. The model is tested by comparing with the evolutionary characteristics of the void ensemble in the sharp interface model solved via a master-equation approach.

Abstract:The moderator cell is of great importance in CNS system, which is a main part of Chinese Advanced Research Reactor (CARR). Void fraction in the moderator cell has great influence on the modera-tion ability, safety of reactor and so on. In order to decrease the void fraction in the annular channel between the moderator cell and the inner cell, holes may be opened in the top of the inner cell, so that some hydrogen gas vaporized from liquid hydrogen under the inner cell can be discharged without flowing through the annu-lar channel. After a series of measurement of the relation between pressure drop and mass flux in small di-ameter short pipes, a correlation was obtainded, according to which the optimized number and diameter of holes are calculated. Moreover, self-adjusting ability and stability of this method at variable reactor powers is analyzed.

Abstract:This paper reviews some moderators for cold neutron source. As a good cold moderator, solid methane was studied and evaluated using the new synthetic frequency spectrum theory (SFS). Due to its high proton density and easy handling, mesitylene (not included in ENDF/B) has also been considered as a very good moderator for cold neutron source. Evaluation of this material in different crystalline phases was done by using a preliminary frequency spectra built combining experimental and synthetic contributions. As a result, we have generated ACE format scattering data files by the NJOY code, with validations of comparing total cross sections from experiments.

Abstract:The Chinese Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) is the national major scientific equipment, which will be completed around 2018. The moderator is the core of the CSNS parts, and CSNS uses three types of moderator to meet the requirements of different neutron wavelength and pulse shapes, and the structure and flow field of Decoupled Poisoned Hydrogen Moderator (DPHM) is the most complicated. Currently, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is the primary tool for thermal design of DPHM to ensure the reliability of calculation result and precision of the engineering requirements. In the current work, three-dimensional simulation of fluid-solid conjugate heat transfer and flow for container pipe, poisoned plate and moderator material were carried out, by compiling corresponding UDF program for ANSYS FLUENT to describe the non-uniform heat source distribution accurately. Thermal-Hydraulic behaviors such as pressure disturbance, pressure rise and temperature distribution cooling capacity are investigated.

Abstract:Full-scale mockup tests were carried out using freon-113 as a working fluid to verify the design of China Advanced Research Reactor (CARR) Cold Neutron Source (CNS), which is a two-phase hydrogen thermosiphon loop consisting of an annular cylindrical moderator cell, two separated hydrogen transfer tubes and a condenser. The circulation characteristics, liquid level and void fraction in the moderator cell against the variation of the heat load were studied. The density ratio and the volumetric evaporating rate of the mockup test are kept the same as those of CARR CNS. The test results show that the mockup loop can establish stable circulation and has a self-regulating characteristic. Within the moderator cell, the inner shell contains only vapor and the outer shell contains the mixture of vapor-liquid with void fraction in a certain range.

Abstract:In nuclear reactor safety assessment studies, void formation in the coolant, both in nominal operation and in accidental scenarios, must be considered since bubble nucleation can lead to fast reactivity changes, thus putting a strain on the reactor control. The evaluation of such a phenomenon is not trivial due to the non-linearities related to the competing phenomena (e.g. neutron absorption and scattering) and the spatial effects. This work aims to analyse the impact of void formation on the multiplication factor in the Pavia (Italy) TRIGA Mark II reactor, focusing on spatial effects. A model of the TRIGA has been developed using Serpent Monte Carlo code and validated against experimental measurements conducted at the Pavia reactor. Two approaches have been adopted. The first consists of directly evaluating the multiplication factor of several configurations, each featured by a different water density to mimic a homogeneous void formation. The second approach consists of a perturbative procedure, i.e., a first-order sensitivity analysis, which allows the gathering of more information on the aforementioned competing phenomena. Both cases subdivide the core into several radial and axial regions to recover the spatial effect. The two approaches appear to be complementary in the information they provide. The results show that the void coefficient is negative in the core and strongly dependent on both position and void fraction. Moreover, the results show the strong influence of the fuel elements type (101 and 103), their location, and the experimental methods adopted on the void coefficient.

Abstract:Understanding the void swelling dependence on irradiation dose for structural materials is critical for the design and operation of advanced nuclear reactors. Due to their easy accessibility in high-voltage transmission electron microscopes, electron beams have been frequently employed to investigate the void swelling mechanisms. Here, we build a general model to describe the radiation-induced swelling produced by energetic electrons. Based on this model, we develop a quantitative relation between void swelling and irradiation dose, which is in good agreement with experimental data. By extrapolating to high-dose swelling in electron-irradiated alloys, our model validation is consistent with available experiments. Furthermore, the model is well supported by our phase-field simulations.

Abstract:In existing schemes of cold neutron sources ,two-phase thermo-siphon loop is widely adopted for its high heat exchange performance .However ,the void fraction in moderator may affect the stability of moderation . In this paper , the single-phase thermo-siphon loop was studied in its performance of dealing with high heat flux in order to replace the two-phase one .A couple method based on iteration ,which combines the one-dimensional theoretical formula and three-dimensional numerical simulation , was presented to analyze the feasibility of single-phase moderator cell scheme in CARR cold neutron source .Both macro-performance of the loop and the detailed information such as flow and temperature field inside moderator cell can be analyzed by this method .T he results show that the thermo-siphon loop only takes away about 30% of the total heat release .However ,with the addition of helium cooling jacket ,the rest of heat can be removed by the direct heat transfer between the metal walls and helium gas . The temperature field shows maximum temperatures of liquid hydrogen and walls are 21.7 K and 23.7 K ,respectively .T he above results indicate that the moderator cell can be cooled adequately ,which proves the single-phase thermo-siphon with helium direct cooling as well as the corresponding moderator cell scheme can meet the requirement of CARR project .

Abstract:The Compact Pulsed Hadron Source (CPHS) of Tsinghua University will produce neutrons by the Be(n,p) reaction through bombarding a proton beam with 13MeV/50Hz/1.25mA from a LINAC system on a beryllium target. One of the purposes of this neutron source facility is to provide the neutron scattering capability for characterization of materials, especially soft matters and biological systems. Cold neutrons (wavelength > 4 Å) are essential to characterize the structure of these materials over the length scale of ∼100 nm with good resolution. We discuss the design and optimization of a cold neutron source (CNS) which employs a solid methane moderator for cold neutron generation. The moderator configuration, the associated cryogenic system, and operation conditions will be discussed.

Abstract:Coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) processes may raise the uncertainty of nuclide transport behavior in long-term operation of nuclear waste repository. A far-field modeling framework on nuclide transport around a nuclear waste repository under coupled THM conditions was developed and verified. Base on conceptual models of high-level waste repository in fractured rocks, a three-dimensional repository model including a vertical fault and a horizontal fracture was built, and influence of coupled THM processes on nuclide transport is numerically investigated. Effects of repository depth, fracture inclination, and internal aperture heterogeneity were investigated using the developed model. The results show that the coupled THM processes significantly affect nuclide transport behavior, especially in the early stages of nuclide leaching. The thermal stress induced by heat release of nuclear waste causes the reduction in fracture aperture around the repository. The nuclide transport under THM conditions is retarded before 103 years than that under hydraulic condition. The deeper locations of the candidate repository exhibit the lower rate of nuclide transport. The inclined fracture induces opposite flow directions between two fractures, which causes the delaying of nuclide transport. Fractures with heterogeneous apertures have preferential flow paths, which results in early arrivals of nuclide transport than fractures with homogenous apertures.

Abstract:Pipe height in cylindrical neutron moderator is an important factor to flow pattern, temperature distribution and even the neutron characters. In this paper, the steady-state thermal analysis of cold neutron moderator is carrying out with different heights, conjugated heat transfer method and one-way coupled with a neutron transfer software. The different pipe heights, which is the jet-to-surface distances (H/D = 0.5~6), were compared using a 2D moderator model. The results show that vortex size and velocity gradient from container wall to vortex center vary with H/D, the center of recirculation zone nearly remain constant, and heat transfer effect is weakened on the target bottom surface. With H/D increasing, the velocity at bottom target surface is progressively decreased, and cooling effect is poor, leading to the rise in temperature. The optimal range cooling performance is (H/D) = 0.5~1 at Re = 1.7 × 105, and the enhancement of beam power further strengthens the thermal deposition difference between container and liquid hydrogen. The results can be applied to moderator component design and optimization in the future spallation neutron source.

Applicability of Void Fraction Models in Rod Bundle at High Quality Conditions

Abstract:Void fraction model is of great importance to the sub-channel analysis.However,the applica-bility of the void fraction models in the sub-channel codes COBRA under high void fraction conditions is not sufficiently validated.Based on a literature review,four void fraction models are selected and applied to the COBRA code to calculate the thermal hydraulic parameters in rod bundles.Comparing to the experimental data obtained in a 4×4 rod bundle using water as coolant,the selected void fraction models are assessed by using relative enthalpy rise and relative mass flux in various sub-channels.It was found that the calculated sub-channel parameters with the Dix model and the slip model(with a slip ratio of 1.5) give the best agree-ment with the experiment data.

Abstract:Void drift between subchannels in a rod bundle is a crucial phenomenon affecting the calculation accuracy of thermal-hydraulic parameters in SMRs. It holds significant importance in enhancing the precision of safety analysis for SMRs. Existing research on experiment and model of void drift between rod bundle subchannels is relatively rare, and the accuracy of model calculations requires improvement. In this study, experiments on gas-liquid two-phase non-equilibrium flow were conducted to measure the redistribution of two-phase flow induced by void drift in a 1 × 2 rod bundle. The experiment results indicated that in bubby flow regime with void fraction less than 0.3, the void diffusion coefficient showed little variation with changes in void fraction. However, in slug flow and annular flow regimes with void fraction exceeding 0.3, the void diffusion coefficient significantly increased with an increase in void fraction. Furthermore, a new void drift model was developed and validated based on a subchannel code. The overall predicted uncertainty for the outlet void fraction in the rod bundle benchmark was less than 13%.

Abstract:The moderator cell is the key structural component of a cold neutron source (CNS), which is installed close to the core of the research reactor to increase the cold neutron flux. It is subjected to great heat load by radiation and the neutron moderators inside it are generally inflammable matters such as hydrogen and deuterium. Therefore, its thermal and mechanical characteristics are closely related to the reactor safety. In this study, thermal and stress analyses are performed for the structural integrity evaluation of the moderator cell of China Advanced Research Reactor (CARR) CNS. The thermal performances in two operating modes, normal mode and stand-by mode, are calculated by the computational fluid dynamics code, FLUENT. The maximum temperatures of liquid hydrogen and walls in normal mode are 21.9 K and 23.0 K. respectively. The maximum wall temperature in stand-by mode is below 393 K. These results satisfy the user's requirement. The static and thermal stresses are analyzed using the finite element analysis program, ANSYS. The stresses are far below the allowable values of the ASME code. The results of the analyses show that the helium direct cooling plays an important role in the cooling for the moderator cell with a helium cooling jacket and the stresses of the moderator cell are significantly affected by the wall thickness. It is expected that the results presented in this paper will be useful in the design and safety evaluation of the moderator cell in CNS. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The focus of this paper is on the measurement and calculation model of void fraction for the vertical upward co-current air-water slug flow in a circular tube of 15 mm inner diameter. High-speed photog-raphy and optical probes were utilized, with water superficial velocity ranging from 0.089 to 0.65 m.s-1 and gas superficial velocity ranging from 0.049 to 0.65 m?s?1. A new void fraction model based on the local parameters was proposed, disposing the slug flow as a combination of Taylor bubbles and liquid slugs. In the Taylor bubble region, correction factors of liquid film thickness Cd and nose shape CZ* were proposed to calculate aTB. In the liquid slug region, the radial void fraction distribution profiles were obtained to calculate aLS, by employing the image processing technique based on supervised machine learning. Results showed that the void fraction proportion in Taylor bubbles occupied crucial contribu-tion to the overall void fraction. Multiple types of void fraction predictive correlations were assessed using the present data. The performance of the Schmidt model was optimal, while some models for slug flow performed not outstanding. Additionally, a predictive correlation was correlated between the central local void fraction and the cross-sectional averaged void fraction, as a straightforward form of the void fraction calculation model. The predictive correlation showed a good agreement with the present exper-imental data, as well as the data of Olerni et al., indicating that the new model was effective and appli-cable under the slug flow conditions.
