Abstract:Carbon nanotube and Polyaniline(Pani)composite for gas sensing were investigated in this paper.Pani coated multi-walled carbon nanotube(MWNT)was synthesized by means of in-sute polymerization and dielectrophoresis.The nano-composite sensor showed a 3.4 reversible resistance change to 10×10-6 NH3 with a response time of 15 s while the sensitivities of Pani film sensor is 1.9 in the contrast experiment.The results indicate that the nano-composite sensitivity and sensing dynamic are improved due to the nanostructure with ultra-high surface-volume ratio and good conductivity.The mechanism of sensitivity to NH3 of the sensor was also discussed.

Abstract:Electrospun polyaniline (PAni) fibers doped with different levels of (+)‐camphor‐10‐sulfonic acid (HCSA) are fabricated and evaluated as chemiresistive gas sensors. The experimental results, based on both sensitivity and response time, show that doped PAni fibers are excellent ammonia sensors and that undoped PAni fibers are excellent nitrogen dioxide sensors. The fibers exhibit changes in measured resistances up to 60‐fold for ammonia sensing, and more than five orders of magnitude for nitrogen dioxide sensing, with characteristic response times on the order of one minute in both cases. A time‐dependent reaction‐diffusion model is used to extract physical parameters from fitting experimental sensor data. The model is then used to illustrate the selection of optimal material design parameters for gas sensing by nanofibers.

Abstract:A chemical prototype sensor was constructed based on nanofiber-structured TiO2 and highly sensitive quartz resonators. The gas-sensing behavior of this new sensor to selected simulant warfare agents was investigated at room temperature. Results showed rapid response and good reversibility of this sensor when used with high-purity nitrogen. This provides a simple approach to preparation of materials needed as chemical sensors for selected organic volatiles or warfare agents.

Abstract:Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) has been severely polluting the atmosphere and deteriorating human beings' sustainable lives. Therefore, development of gas sensors for high-selectivity and high-sensitivity detection of NO2 has been attracting increasing attention. The state-of-the-art inorganic NO2 gas sensors require harsh fabrication conditions or toxic materials, making the devices intrinsically eco-unfriendly. Furthermore, in most cases the sensors work at high temperatures. These disadvantages severely impede their practical applications. Herein, we report a room-temperature and highly-integrated NO2 sensor composed of p-type self-assembled peptide fibrillar nanoforests (SPNFs) scaffolded with n-type SnO2 nanoparticles (NPs) heterojunctions. The p-n conformations provide efficient access to target gases and allow reliable electron transformations, while the SPNFs afford a large specific surface area and multiporous structures for gas adsorption and SnO2 NPs dispersion, resulting in an ultrahigh selectivity for NO2 detection. Especially, the sensing performance can be optimized by modulating the thickness and density of the SPNFs, showing a high response, short response and recovery times, along with a low detection limitation. Our strategy demonstrates the development of a bioinspired platform by utilizing peptide selfassemblies to fabricate integrated sensors for polluting gas detections.

Abstract:Porous and polycrystalline In2O3 nanotubes are prepared by layer-by-layer assembly on CNT templates and subsequent calcination (see figure). The as-prepared In2O3 nanotubes exhibit superior sensitivity to NH3 at room temperature, as well as a good reproducibility and short re sponse/recovery time. This novel approach presented herein can be extended to synthesize other metal oxide nanotubes such as NiO, SnO2, Fe2O3, and CuO.

Abstract:Electrospinning as a cost-effective process to synthesize nanofiber with controlled morphology and structure has regained attention in the last decade as result of rapid advancements in nanoscale science and engineering and their applications. Although there are a few works demonstrated the ability to fabricate nano gas sensor using electrospun nanofibers as sensing materials, there are limited works to show the optimization of the sensing performance by understanding the electron transport properties and their sensing mechanism. The overall objective of this work is to electrospun conducting polymer/insulating polymer composite nanofibers (i.e., (+)- camphor-10-sulfonic acid (HCSA) doped polyanline PANI (conductive) blended with PEO (non-conductive)) with different compositions (i.e., 12 to 68 wt.%) and apply them as chemiresistive sensing material to detect ammonia at room temperature. The diameter, defects, and morphology of nanofibers were adjusted by controlling solution composition, processing parameters and their effect toward the sensing performance were also investigated. Viscosity of electrospinning solutions was found to have a pronounced impact on fiber diameter and morphology of PANI/PEO nanofibers. Diameters around 350nm of different compositions of PANI/PEO nanofibers were achieved, where decreasing solution viscosity by increasing the PANI content resulted in a morphology changing from individual fibers to junctions. Although all the compositions of PANI/PEO nanofibers show semiconducting behavior and fit a three dimensional variable hopping range model, the activation energy and hopping distance increased as the PANI content decreased. The PANI/PEO nanofibers exhibited excellent sensitivity towards NH3 with fast response and recovery times where a low detection limit of 0.5 ppm with the sensitivity of 5.6 %/ppm of NH3 was achieved from 26 wt.% PANI/PEO nanofibers. Additionally, the PANI/PEO nanofibers response toward water vapor changed from positive to negative indicating the humidity independent ammonia gas sensor can be fabricated by controlling the composition of PANI/PEO nanofibers.

Abstract:Hollow carbon-coated In2O3 (C#In2O3) nanofibers were prepared using an efficiently combined approach of electrospinning, high-temperature calcination, and hydrothermal process. The polyaniline (PANI)/hollow C#In2O3 nanofiber composites were synthesized used hollow C#In2O3 nanofibers worked as a core through the in situ chemical oxidative polymerization. The morphology and crystalline structure of the PANI/hollow C#In2O3 nanofiber composite were identified using wide-angle X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The gas-sensing performances of the fabricated PANI/hollow C#In2O3 nanofiber composite sensor were estimated at room temperature, and the response value of the composite sensor with an exposure of 1 ppm NH3 was 18.2, which was about 5.74 times larger than that of the pure PANI sensor. The PANI/hollow C#In2O3 nanofiber composite sensor was demonstrated to be highly sensitive to the detection of NH3 in the concentration range of 0.6~2.0 ppm, which is critical for kidney or hepatic disease detection from the human breath. This composite sensor also displayed superior repeatability and selectivity at room temperature with exposures of 1.0 and 2.0 ppm NH3. Because of the outstanding repeatability and selectivity to the detection of NH3 at 1.0 and 2.0 ppm confirmed in this investigation, the PANI/hollow C#In2O3 nanofiber composite sensor will be considered as a favorable gas-sensing material for kidney or hepatic disease detection from human breath.

Abstract:NH3 gas sensors with good sensing performance including wide detection range at room temperature are highly desirable for a large variety of applications. In this work, multi-walled carbon nanotubes grafted with sodium polystyrenesulfonate (PSSNa-MWCNTs) are prepared via a controlled radical polymerization and show good dispersibility in water. The composite of polypyrrole with PSSNa-MWCNTs (PPy/PSSNa-MWCNT) is prepared by in situ vapor phase polymerization of pyrrole to fabricate NH3 gas sensors. Effects of the content of PSSNa-MWCNTs, the concentration of the oxidant, polymerization time and temperature on the gas sensing properties of the composite are investigated at room temperature. It is revealed that the composite shows much higher response magnitude than the single components. Under optimal conditions, PPy/PSSNa-MWCNT exhibits very wide detection range from 5 to 2000 ppm, and good sensing linearity over 5-20 ppm and 20-100 ppm, respectively. Moreover, the electrical responses of the composite towards NH3 gas are fast (response and recovery time to 1000 ppm NH3 gas are 16.7 s and 143.6 s, respectively), reproducible and highly selective. The interactions between PPy and MWCNTs promote the charge transfer in the composite, leading to good sensing performance and exhibiting a synergetic effect.

Abstract:With the development of industrial and medical technology, chemical sensors based on electron charge carriers are difficult to meet the upping requirements on excellent sensitivity, good selectivity, and portability. Herein, a new type of sensing material is developed via facile preparation method. Metal ions, instead of electrons, are used as charge carriers and distributed in the polymer matrix. As a representative, the ionic conductive gas sensor based on polyacrylic acid and copper ions (PAA-Cu(II)) is fabricated. The PAA-Cu(II) sensor exhibits excellent linear response to ammonia (NH3), together with high sensitivity (50.3% for 50 ppm NH3), good selectivity, and fast response/recovery time (10/10.5 s). The sensor also displays high transparency, long-term air stability, and excellent flexibility. In addition, sensor arrays based on various metal ions (Cu2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Ag+, Fe3+, Mg2+) and polymers (polyacrylic acid, polyvinyl alcohol, polyethyleneimine) are also developed, and the sensing properties are investigated. The results suggest that metal ions-based capacitive flexible sensors have great potential for low-cost chemical sensors and provide a promising strategy for developing new sensing materials.

Abstract:Hollow indium trioxide (In2O3) nanofibers fabricated via an effectively combined method of electrospinning and high-temperature calcination were coated with nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) prepared by a hydrothermal process through electrostatic interaction. The N-GQD-coated hollow In2O3 nanofibers served as a core for the synthesis of polyaniline (PANI)/N-GQD/hollow In2O3 nanofiber ternary composites using in situ chemical oxidative polymerization. The chemical structure and morphology of the fabricated ternary composites were characterized using Fourier transform infrared, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The gas-sensing performances of the ternary composites were estimated by a homemade dynamic test system which was supplied with a real-time resistance acquisition platform at room temperature. The response value of the PANI/N-GQD/hollow In2O3 nanofiber sensor with a loading of 20 wt% N-GQD-coated hollow In2O3 nanofiber and an exposure of 1 ppm NH3 was 15.2, which was approximately more than 4.4 times higher than that of the PANI sensor. This ternary composite sensor was proved to be very sensitive in the detection of NH3 at a range of concentration between 0.6 ppm and 2.0 ppm at room temperature, which is crucial in the detection of hepatic or kidney disease in human breath. The PANI/N-GQD/hollow In2O3 nanofiber sensor also revealed higher selectivity and repeatability when exposed to 1.0 and 2.0 ppm NH3 at room temperature. Because of the excellent selectivity and repeatability in the detection of 1.0 and 2.0 ppm NH3 at room temperature achieved in this study, it is considered that the PANI/N-GQD/hollow In2O3 nanofiber composite sensor will be a favored gas-sensing material applied on human breath for the detection of hepatic or kidney disease.

Abstract:Nanocomposites of SnO2 nanosheets and polypyrrole (PPy) were facilely prepared and their gas sensing properties towards low concentration of NH3 have been investigated at room temperature. Vertically aligned SnO2 nanosheets were in situ grown on the substrates via hydrothermal treatment of electrospun nanofibers containing SnCl2 precursors at a low temperature (135 degrees C), and coated with PPy by vapor phase polymerization of pyrrole. The SnO2 nanosheets and the nanocomposites were characterized by X-ray diffraction patterns, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy and high resolution transmission microscopy. The nanocomposite sensors exhibited much higher response magnitude towards NH3 than the sensors based on PPy alone. The effect of the type of doping acids and polymerization time of pyrrole on the sensing properties of the nanocomposites was examined. The nanocomposite sensors revealed sensitive (sensitivity of 6.2%/ppm in the range of 1-10.7 ppm of NH3, detection limit of similar to 257 ppb), selective and repeatable response to NH3, and the sensing mechanism has been explored. This work could provide references for the facile preparation of advanced gas sensors based on in situ grown nanostructured metal-oxide semiconductors and their composites. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Semiconducting nanomaterials with different sizes and shapes have wide applications in the field of electronics, and one of the key pathway to improve their performance is by recombination of different materials. In our innovative work, the nanocomposites of polypyrrole (PPy) and MXene were prepared by a simple in situ polymerization reaction. The samples were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The samples were made into sensors, and the gas sensitivities of the materials were investigated under different test conditions. The results showed that the response value of PPy/MXene-12 sensor to 100 ppm ammonia at room temperature was 2.38 times than that of pure PPy and 6.38 times than that of pure MXene. In addition, the sensor has excellent selectivity and low detection limit, which demonstrate the excellent practicability of them in the field of Internet of Things (IoT).
High-performance Ammonia Sensor at Room Temperature Based on 2D Conductive MOF Cu3(HITP)2

Abstract:Sensitive detection of ammonia in the environment is crucial due to its potential danger to human ecology and health. In gas detection technology, resistive sensors utilizing golden cross finger electrodes combined with gas-sensitive materials are commonly employed. In this study, we demonstrated a room-temperature sensor for ambient ammonia detection. The sensor is composed of two-dimensional layer-stacked metal-organic framework (MOF) Cu3(HITP)2 nanomaterials drop-coated onto gold-forked finger electrodes. Density-functional theory simulation (DFT) and sensor gas-sensitive performance testing were conducted for characterization. The sensor exhibited high sensitivity, selectivity, low detection limit, excellent reproducibility, and stability. This can be attributed to the abundant Cu active sites exposed in the hexagonal ring and layer-stacked framework structure of Cu3(HITP)2 nanomaterials. Ammonia adsorption leads to electron transfer into the Cu3(HITP)2 framework, resulting in decreased sensor resistance. Real-time monitoring of sensor resistance changes enabled quantitative analysis. Results showed a 91.4% response of the Cu3(HITP)2 sensor to 100 ppm NH3, with response and recovery times of 26 s and 20 s, respectively. The sensor's limit of detection (LOD) was approximately 15 ppb. The sensor exhibited a relatively high response to NH3 at 25 °C, as demonstrated by dynamic gradient test curves. These findings suggest that constituting a room-temperature ammonia sensor by uniformly drop-coating Cu3(HITP)2 onto a gold-forked finger electrode is a feasible strategy.

Abstract:Development of chemo-resistive room-temperature ammonia (NH3) sensor with high performance remains a great challenge to this day. In this paper, we demonstrate a room-temperature NH3 sensor based on organic-inorganic cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4)/polyaniline (PANI) composite. The CoFe2O4 porous nanosheets were firstly prepared by using a direct precipitation method, and then the PANI were anchored onto the surfaces of the CoFe2O4 porous nanosheets through an in-situ polymerization process to form the CoFe2O4/PANI composite. The crystal structure, morphology, and surface chemistry of the CoFe2O4/PANI composite were characterized by combined techniques of X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, and spectroscopy. Due to the porous feature of the composite and the formation of p-p heterojunctions between the CoFe2O4 and PANI, the CoFe2O4/PANI gas sensor exhibited excellent NH3-sensing performance with high response (13 to 100 ppm NH3), good selectivity, wide detection range (10–500 ppm), and rapid response/recovery rate (18/31 s to 100 ppm NH3) at room temperature. Additionally, the CoFe2O4/PANI gas sensor owned outstanding repeatability and long-term stability. This study offered a promising candidate of CoFe2O4/PANI composite for constructing room-temperature NH3 sensor.

Abstract:An initiator is applied to synthesize single-walled carbon nanotube/polyaniline composite nanofibers for use as high-performance chemosensors. The composite nanofibers possess widely tunable conductivities (10(-4) to 10(2) S/cm) with up to 5.0 wt % single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) loadings. Chemosensors fabricated from the composite nanofibers synthesized with a 1.0 wt % SWCNT loading respond much more rapidly to low concentrations (100 ppb) of HCl and NH(3) vapors compared to polyaniline nanofibers alone (120 s vs 1000 s). These nanofibrillar SWCNT/polyaniline composite nanostructures are promising materials for use as low-cost disposable sensors and as electrodes due to their widely tunable conductivities.

Abstract:Electrospum polyaniline nanofibers doped with palladium nanoparticles have been demonstrated for hydrogen sensing in the formation of a chemresistor. These nanofibers have been deposited as single nanofibers across two gold electrodes by means of near-field electrospinning without using the conventional lithography process. These palladium nanoparticle based chemresistors have recorded 1.8% resistance change in the environment with 0.3% hydrogen concentration. These nanofibers sensors are flexible with good reversibility and potentially versatile by doping with different particles. As such, nanofiber-based sensors could be promising for environmental and industrial applications.
Room Temperature NH3 Selective Gas Sensors Based on Double-Shell Hierarchical SnO2@polyaniline Composites

Abstract:Morphology and structure play a crucial role in influencing the performance of gas sensors. Hollow structures, in particular, not only increase the specific surface area of the material but also enhance the collision frequency of gases within the shell, and have been studied in depth in the field of gas sensing. Taking SnO2 as an illustrative example, a dual-shell structure SnO2 (D-SnO2) was prepared. D-SnO2@Polyaniline (PANI) (DSPx, x represents D-SnO2 molar content) composites were synthesized via the in situ oxidative polymerization method, and simultaneously deposited onto a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate to fabricate an electrode-free, flexible sensor. The impact of the SnO2 content on the sensing performance of the DSPx-based sensor for NH3 detection at room temperature was discussed. The results showed that the response of a 20 mol% D-SnO2@PANI (DSP20) sensor to 100 ppm NH3 at room temperature is 37.92, which is 5.1 times higher than that of a pristine PANI sensor. Moreover, the DSP20 sensor demonstrated a rapid response and recovery rate at the concentration of 10 ppm NH3, with response and recovery times of 182 s and 86 s.

Highly Sensitive Ammonia Gas Detection at Room Temperature by Integratable Silicon Nanowire Field-Effect Sensors

Abstract:Toxic gas monitoring at room temperature (RT) is of great concern to public health and safety, where ultrathin silicon nanowires (SiNWs), with diameter <80 nm, are ideal one-dimensional candidates to achieve high-performance field-effect sensing. However, a precise integration of the tiny SiNWs as active gas sensor channels has not been possible except for the use of expensive and inefficient electron beam lithography and etching. In this work, we demonstrate an integratable fabrication of field-effect sensors based on orderly SiNW arrays, produced via step-guided in-plane solid-liquid-solid growth. The back-gated SiNW sensors can be tuned into suitable subthreshold detection regime to achieve an outstanding field-effect sensitivity (75.8% @ 100 ppm NH3), low detection limit (100 ppb), and excellent selectivity to NH3 gas at RT, with fast response/recovery time scales (Tres/Trec) of 20 s (at 100 ppb NH3) and excellent repeatability and high stability over 180 days. These outstanding sensing performances can be attributed to the fast charge transfer between adsorbed NH3 molecules and the exposed SiNW channels, indicating a convenient strategy to fabricate and deploy high-performance gas detectors that are widely needed in the booming marketplace of wearable or portable electronics.
