Abstract:Carbon nanotube and Polyaniline(Pani)composite for gas sensing were investigated in this paper.Pani coated multi-walled carbon nanotube(MWNT)was synthesized by means of in-sute polymerization and dielectrophoresis.The nano-composite sensor showed a 3.4 reversible resistance change to 10×10-6 NH3 with a response time of 15 s while the sensitivities of Pani film sensor is 1.9 in the contrast experiment.The results indicate that the nano-composite sensitivity and sensing dynamic are improved due to the nanostructure with ultra-high surface-volume ratio and good conductivity.The mechanism of sensitivity to NH3 of the sensor was also discussed.

Abstract:Fe2O3 nanosheets were in-situ deposited on the interdigitated gold electrodes by hydrothermal treatment of the electrospun nanofibers containing FeCl3 and poly(vinyl butyral). As-prepared electrode was further dip-coated with water-dispersible polyaniline (PANI) to fabricate a resistance gas sensor based on Fe2O3/PANI nanocomposite. The structure and morphology of the nanocomposite were investigated by X-ray diffraction pattern, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. It was found that the nanocomposite sensor exhibited much higher response magnitude towards low concentration of NH3 (0.5-10.7 ppm) than the sensors based on either PANI or Fe2O3 at room temperature (similar to 20 degrees C), indicating an obvious synergetic effect. The nanocomposite sensor was featured with ultra high response magnitude (relative resistance change of similar to 3070% towards 10.7 ppm of NH3) and excellent selectivity towards NH3. A sensing mechanism has been put forward, which takes into account of the conducting network comprising of bulk PANI and composites of PANI and Fe2O3 nanosheets. It was proposed that the pin heterojunction established between Fe2O3 nanosheets and PANI coating played a major role in the highly desirable sensing performance of the composite. Polyaniline–TiO2 Nano-Composite-based Trimethylamine QCM Sensor and Its Thermal Behavior Studies

Abstract:Inorganic/organic composites are very attractive due to synergetic behavior and a wide range of potential use. A polyaniline–TiO2 nano-composite, obtained by combination of chemical polymerization and a sol–gel method, was deposited on the electrode of quartz crystal to implement a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) chemical sensor. The morphology of the composite film was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) measurements. The coated quartz crystal and a non-coated quartz crystal were mounted in a sealed chamber, and their frequency difference was monitored. When analyte vapor was injected into the chamber, gas absorption decreased the frequency of the coated quartz crystal and thereby caused an increase of the frequency difference between the two crystals. The frequency difference change response towards trimethylamine was evident and could be recovered by N2 purgation easily. The calibration curve towards trimethylamine, its long-term stability and selectivity were investigated. The thermal behavior of the sensing characteristics was compared with that of a polyaniline QCM sensor. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra of polyaniline and polyaniline–TiO2 nano-composite and QCM data under various conditions were used to study the effect of thermal treatment.

Abstract:Nanocomposites of SnO2 nanosheets and polypyrrole (PPy) were facilely prepared and their gas sensing properties towards low concentration of NH3 have been investigated at room temperature. Vertically aligned SnO2 nanosheets were in situ grown on the substrates via hydrothermal treatment of electrospun nanofibers containing SnCl2 precursors at a low temperature (135 degrees C), and coated with PPy by vapor phase polymerization of pyrrole. The SnO2 nanosheets and the nanocomposites were characterized by X-ray diffraction patterns, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy and high resolution transmission microscopy. The nanocomposite sensors exhibited much higher response magnitude towards NH3 than the sensors based on PPy alone. The effect of the type of doping acids and polymerization time of pyrrole on the sensing properties of the nanocomposites was examined. The nanocomposite sensors revealed sensitive (sensitivity of 6.2%/ppm in the range of 1-10.7 ppm of NH3, detection limit of similar to 257 ppb), selective and repeatable response to NH3, and the sensing mechanism has been explored. This work could provide references for the facile preparation of advanced gas sensors based on in situ grown nanostructured metal-oxide semiconductors and their composites. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. A Very Thin Layer of NiO, Ni(OH)2 Nanosheets Arrays with Organic Functional Modification of Polyaniline

Abstract:NiO, conductive polymers have many important applications in supercapacitor, lithium-ion batteries, H2production with photocatalysis, chemical sensors, biosensors, electrochromic, environmental fields, and so on. Due to P-type semiconductors of NiO and polyaniline, the NiO/Polyaniline (PANi) would be a new nanocomposite with synergistic behaviors or complementary properties. Different morphologies of NiO were synthesized with hydrothermal method. NiO nanosheets arrays on glass substrate were obtained with optimized condition. And the NiO nanosheets arrays were immersed in the solution of aniline accompanying chemical oxidation reaction. The results indicated that a very thin layer of NiO, Ni (OH)2nanosheets arrays with organic functional modification of polyaniline were formed on glass substrate due to acid etching effects. The results of XRD showed that the presence of NiO and Ni (OH)2in prepared film were observed. The FTIR results also confirmed that this very thin film contained the components of polyaniline. This method is very simple, which would be used in many film electrodes for photocatalysis fields, supercapacitor, sensors, et al.

Abstract:NH3 gas sensors with good sensing performance including wide detection range at room temperature are highly desirable for a large variety of applications. In this work, multi-walled carbon nanotubes grafted with sodium polystyrenesulfonate (PSSNa-MWCNTs) are prepared via a controlled radical polymerization and show good dispersibility in water. The composite of polypyrrole with PSSNa-MWCNTs (PPy/PSSNa-MWCNT) is prepared by in situ vapor phase polymerization of pyrrole to fabricate NH3 gas sensors. Effects of the content of PSSNa-MWCNTs, the concentration of the oxidant, polymerization time and temperature on the gas sensing properties of the composite are investigated at room temperature. It is revealed that the composite shows much higher response magnitude than the single components. Under optimal conditions, PPy/PSSNa-MWCNT exhibits very wide detection range from 5 to 2000 ppm, and good sensing linearity over 5-20 ppm and 20-100 ppm, respectively. Moreover, the electrical responses of the composite towards NH3 gas are fast (response and recovery time to 1000 ppm NH3 gas are 16.7 s and 143.6 s, respectively), reproducible and highly selective. The interactions between PPy and MWCNTs promote the charge transfer in the composite, leading to good sensing performance and exhibiting a synergetic effect.

Abstract:ZnO nanoparticles, nanorods and nanosheets were in-situ deposited on the interdigitated gold electrodes by hydrothermal treatment of electrospun nanofibers containing zinc salt precursors and seed-induced solution growth of ZnO. The nanostructured ZnO was further covered with polyaniline (PANI) via vapor phase polymerization of aniline or dip-coating with water-dispersible PANI to prepare ZnO/PANI nanocomposites. The morphology and structure of the nanocomposites were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction patterns and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The electrical responses of the nanocomposites toward NH3 have been examined at room temperature, and the nanocomposite revealed much better gas sensing properties than ZnO or PANI alone. The morphology of the nanocomposites had a great effect on their sensing properties. Specifically, the composite of ZnO nanosheets covered with vapor phase polymerized aniline demonstrated optimal sensing performance, featuring high response magnitude (relevant resistance change of similar to 2150% towards NH3 as low as 10 ppm), ultralow limit of detection (similar to 5 ppb), good repeatability and excellent selectivity. It is proposed that the morphology and the interactions between p-type PANI and n-type ZnO are responsible for the highly desirable sensing properties of the nanocomposites. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. Gas sensing properties of layer-by-layer self-assembled ultrathin film of polyaniline/titanium dioxide

Abstract:Electrostatic layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly (SA) was realized with processable polyaniline prepared with polystyrene sulfonic acid as a template (PANI-PSSA) and titanium dioxide sol as the starting materials, resulting in an ultrathin film of PANI-PSSA/TiO2. The SA process was confirmed by UV–vis spectra and quartz crystal microbalance measurements. The composite ultrathin film was characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction patterns, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy. It was revealed that the content of TiO2 in the composite film was much higher than that of PANI-PSSA, and the doping level of PANI-PSSA was as high as 19.1%. Gas sensors were fabricated by depositing self-assembled ultrathin film of PANI-PSSA/TiO2 on interdigital gold electrodes, then covering another layer of PANI-PSSA via dip-coating. Electrical response to NH3 of the sensor was investigated at room temperature. Gas sensitivity of the sensor was found to closely relate to the number of self-assembled bilayers. Under optimal conditions, the sensor displayed high sensitivity (26.5% and 81.2% towards NH3 of 10 and 100ppm, respectively), fast response (response time∼1min; recovery time∼2min), good reversibility and repeatability.
Facile Synthesis of Polyaniline/Carbon-Coated Hollow Indium Oxide Nanofiber Composite with Highly Sensitive Ammonia Gas Sensor at the Room Temperature

Abstract:Hollow carbon-coated In2O3 (C#In2O3) nanofibers were prepared using an efficiently combined approach of electrospinning, high-temperature calcination, and hydrothermal process. The polyaniline (PANI)/hollow C#In2O3 nanofiber composites were synthesized used hollow C#In2O3 nanofibers worked as a core through the in situ chemical oxidative polymerization. The morphology and crystalline structure of the PANI/hollow C#In2O3 nanofiber composite were identified using wide-angle X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The gas-sensing performances of the fabricated PANI/hollow C#In2O3 nanofiber composite sensor were estimated at room temperature, and the response value of the composite sensor with an exposure of 1 ppm NH3 was 18.2, which was about 5.74 times larger than that of the pure PANI sensor. The PANI/hollow C#In2O3 nanofiber composite sensor was demonstrated to be highly sensitive to the detection of NH3 in the concentration range of 0.6~2.0 ppm, which is critical for kidney or hepatic disease detection from the human breath. This composite sensor also displayed superior repeatability and selectivity at room temperature with exposures of 1.0 and 2.0 ppm NH3. Because of the outstanding repeatability and selectivity to the detection of NH3 at 1.0 and 2.0 ppm confirmed in this investigation, the PANI/hollow C#In2O3 nanofiber composite sensor will be considered as a favorable gas-sensing material for kidney or hepatic disease detection from human breath.

Abstract:Porous and polycrystalline In2O3 nanotubes are prepared by layer-by-layer assembly on CNT templates and subsequent calcination (see figure). The as-prepared In2O3 nanotubes exhibit superior sensitivity to NH3 at room temperature, as well as a good reproducibility and short re sponse/recovery time. This novel approach presented herein can be extended to synthesize other metal oxide nanotubes such as NiO, SnO2, Fe2O3, and CuO.
Gas Sensing Properties of A Composite Composed of Electrospun Poly(Methyl Methacrylate) Nanofibers and in Situ Polymerized Polyaniline

Abstract:Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) nanofibers with different diameters were fabricated by electrospinning and their composites with polyaniline (PANI) were formed by virtue of in situ solution polymerization. The coaxial composite nanofibers so prepared were then transferred to the surface of a gold interdigitated electrode to construct a gas sensor. The structure and morphology of the PANI/PMMA composite fibers were characterized by UV–vis spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy, which indicated that the coaxial nanofibres of PANI emeraldine salt and PMMA were successfully prepared. The electrical responses of the gas sensor based on the composite nanofibres towards triethylamine (TEA) vapors were investigated at room temperature. It was revealed that the sensor showed a sensing magnitude as high as 77 towards TEA vapor of 500ppm. In addition, the responses were linear, reversible and reproducible towards TEA vapors ranging from 20 to 500ppm. The diameters of the electrospun PMMA fibers had an effect on the sensing magnitude of the gas sensor, which is proposed to relate to the difference in the surface-to-volume ratio of the fibers. Furthermore, it was found that the concentration of doping acids only led to changes in resistance of the sensor, but could not affect its sensing characteristics. In contrast, the nature of the doping acids was determinative for the sensing magnitude of the sensor. The gas sensor with toluene sulfonic acid as the doping acid exhibited the highest sensing magnitude, which is explained by taking into account of the sensing mechanism and the interactions of doping acids with TEA vapor.

Abstract:A sensitive polyaniline (PANI)/titanium dioxide (TiO2) based toxic gas sensor deposited on a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) chip was fabricated and developed through electrostatic layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly (SA) with polyaniline and titanium dioxide sol as original materials. The synthesis process and the obtained nanocomposite were confirmed through a home-made measurement set-up, field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), which demonstrates that a thin PANI/TiO2 nanocomposite sensing film was successfully achieved by LbL self-assembly. The sensor response was found to be greatly influenced by the number of deposited layers. The resulting PANI/TiO2 based gas sensor exhibited good sensitivity and smooth shift in terms of responses based on frequency data compared to responses based on resistance data. It exhibited high sensitivity toward 10 ppm of three different toxic gases (ammonia, hydrogen sulfide and trimethylamine) with an evident frequency shift and a fast response and recovery time. The sensor showed excellent reversibility and long-term stability as well as good selectivity towards NH3. In real-time application, the obtained PANI/TiO2 based gas sensor exhibited excellent performance and accurate evaluation of three typical foodstuffs. The PANI/TiO2 nanocomposite based gas sensor coated on QCM substrate via LbL self-assembly provides a promising efficient sensor to detect toxic gases in relatively low concentrations.
PANI/Ti3C2Tx composite nanofiber-based flexible conductometric sensor for the detection of NH3 at room temperature

Abstract:The rational design of sensing materials with distinct morphologies and compositions is important to construct outstanding flexible gas sensors. Herein, a mesh polyaniline (PANI)/Ti3C2Tx composite nanofiber-based flexible sensor was constructed by electrospinning of PANI and few-layer Ti3C2Tx nanosheets. Sensing results indicated that this novel PANI/Ti3C2Tx flexible sensor demonstrated much higher NH3 sensing response (2.3-fold improvement @ 20 ppm) in comparison with the sensor based on pure PANI nanofibers at 25 °C. Under different bending angles (maximum compression of 150°) and different bending times (maximum bending of 3200 times), the PANI/Ti3C2Tx flexible sensor maintained steady sensing behavior towards 20 ppm NH3, which reflected its good flexible bending stability. The PANI/Ti3C2Tx flexible sensor also exhibited good selectivity, repeatability, as well as good long-term stability. The improvement of NH3 sensing properties can be ascribed to the formation of Schottky junctions between PANI and Ti3C2Tx nanosheets, improved protonation degree of PANI, and the special three-dimensional mesh fiber structure. Our work revealed that the PANI/Ti3C2Tx composite nanofibers with interconnected mesh fiber structure have great potential to construct flexible NH3 sensors.

Abstract:A nanocomposite of polypyrrole (Ppy) and palladium was fabricated by a facile method involving thermal dynamic refluxing of palladium salt and encapsulation of Pd nanoclusters with Ppy by vapor phase polymerization. The composite film was characterized using transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. It was found that the morphologies of the composite film were heavily affected by concentration and ratio of the reactants, polymerization time and polymer additives. The nanocomposite showed a response magnitude of 13.9–58.9% towards NH3 gas of 50–2000ppm at room temperature, which is higher than that of Ppy alone by a factor of two. Moreover, the electrical response was reversible, reproducible and fast, with response and recovery times of 14s and 148s for 1000ppm NH3, respectively. Gas sensory properties of the nanocomposite greatly depended on the size of Pd nanoparticles and the morphology of the composite film.
Electrospun Polyaniline/Poly(ethylene oxide) Composite Nanofibers Based Gas Sensor

Abstract:Electrospinning as a cost-effective process to synthesize nanofiber with controlled morphology and structure has regained attention in the last decade as result of rapid advancements in nanoscale science and engineering and their applications. Although there are a few works demonstrated the ability to fabricate nano gas sensor using electrospun nanofibers as sensing materials, there are limited works to show the optimization of the sensing performance by understanding the electron transport properties and their sensing mechanism. The overall objective of this work is to electrospun conducting polymer/insulating polymer composite nanofibers (i.e., (+)- camphor-10-sulfonic acid (HCSA) doped polyanline PANI (conductive) blended with PEO (non-conductive)) with different compositions (i.e., 12 to 68 wt.%) and apply them as chemiresistive sensing material to detect ammonia at room temperature. The diameter, defects, and morphology of nanofibers were adjusted by controlling solution composition, processing parameters and their effect toward the sensing performance were also investigated. Viscosity of electrospinning solutions was found to have a pronounced impact on fiber diameter and morphology of PANI/PEO nanofibers. Diameters around 350nm of different compositions of PANI/PEO nanofibers were achieved, where decreasing solution viscosity by increasing the PANI content resulted in a morphology changing from individual fibers to junctions. Although all the compositions of PANI/PEO nanofibers show semiconducting behavior and fit a three dimensional variable hopping range model, the activation energy and hopping distance increased as the PANI content decreased. The PANI/PEO nanofibers exhibited excellent sensitivity towards NH3 with fast response and recovery times where a low detection limit of 0.5 ppm with the sensitivity of 5.6 %/ppm of NH3 was achieved from 26 wt.% PANI/PEO nanofibers. Additionally, the PANI/PEO nanofibers response toward water vapor changed from positive to negative indicating the humidity independent ammonia gas sensor can be fabricated by controlling the composition of PANI/PEO nanofibers.

Abstract:A composite of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and polypyrrole (Ppy) has been synthesized by vapor phase polymerization, and characterized by Fourier transformed infrared spectra, Raman spectra, thermal gravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction study and scanning electron microscopy. Its gas sensitive characteristics towards NH3 vapor were investigated at room temperature. It was found that the composite exhibited a higher sensitivity than both Ppy and MWCNTs separately. In addition, the response was reversible even when the concentration of NH3 vapor was as high as 12,500ppm, in contrast to the usually observed unrecoverable response of carbon nanotubes and their composite to low concentration NH3 vapor at room temperature. The oxidizing agents and dopants used for preparation of the composite have a great effect on its gas sensitive characteristics, which is related to its morphology and contact with the electrode.
Tin oxide/graphene composite fabricated via a hydrothermal method for gas sensors working at room temperature

Abstract:SnO2/graphene (GN) composite was fabricated via a simple one-pot hydrothermal method with graphene oxide (GO) and SnCl2 as the precursors. The composite was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction patterns, scanning electron microscopy and high resolution transmittance electron microscopy. It exhibited 3D nanostructure in which flower-like microspheres consisting of SnO2 nanoflakes distributed among GN layers decorated with tiny SnO2 nanoparticles, and was featured with high surface area (94.9m2/g). GO is supposed to act as a template in the hydrothermal process, promoting the preferential growth of SnO2 nanocrystals and preventing the agglomeration of SnO2 nanoparticles. NH3 sensing characteristics of the composite at room temperature were investigated, and found to closely relate to its composition and structure. Under optimal conditions, the composite displayed high response magnitude (15.9% for 50ppm NH3), fast response (response and recovery time<1min), good reversibility and repeatability. Moreover, it exhibited small temperature coefficients in the range of 15–45°C. The ability of detecting gas at good room temperature of the composite is proposed to relate to its high specific surface, good conductivity of GN and interactions between GN and SnO2.

Abstract:With increasing applications of sensors for daily activity monitoring, it is important to have a high‐sensitivity sensor. The study demonstrates significant sensing response enhancement by introducing surface functionalization onto MXene sensing materials. The obtained P‐type response of COOH‐Ti3C2Tx/PANI sensor exhibits a higher and table response to NH3 than pristine MXene at room temperature with different humidity conditions. Various sensing materials have been demonstrated to increase the precision of sensing technology. Nevertheless, this complicates the fabrication process for materials integration to obtain devices that can simultaneously accommodate various gas detectors, like electronic nose. The study here focuses on exploring the sensing response of different functionalization of specific sensing materials to provide an alternative way to achieve selective response to multiple gases. Triethoxysilylpropyl succinic anhydride silane (TESPSA) was introduced on 2D material MXene‐Ti3C2Tx to form carboxylic acid terminated MXene (COOH‐Ti3C2Tx) and alternately coated with polyaniline (COOH‐Ti3C2Tx/PANI). This modification doubled up the gas binding sites and improved the binding strength of the Ti3C2Tx surface to NH3 gas molecules. The 5CC‐COOH‐Ti3C2Tx/PANI sensor prepared from five coating cycles showed the highest sensitivity (214.70 %) with fast gas response rate at 80 ppm NH3 (1.75 % s‐1). Therefore, the different signal responses from specific functionalization of the same sensing material functionalization will allow the possible sensor array fabrication to achieve fingerprint‐like sensing map recognition in the presence of mixed gases.
