The Arctic in World Affairs

Abstract:Long dismisses as a frozen wasteland, of interest only to a handful of explorers, traders, missionaries, scientists, and indigenous people, the Arctic has emerged as a region of major significance. As the possibilities for military, economic, and environmental benefits and losses rise, so, too, do the stakes of all the Arctic nations in devising ways of work together. The author argues that all Arctic states can gain from cooperating to devise ways of exploiting Northern resources while protecting the region's ecosystems and cultures.
