Abstract:Wireless broadband digital communication systems with high spectral efficiency suffer from severe power efficiency problem. Peak-to-Average Power Ratio is reported up to 12dB for WiMAX 802.16e systems implementing OFDM IFFT-1024 and 64-QAM modulation. In this work, outphasing (LINC) and polar transmitter architectures are investigated and compared with direct conversion (DC) architecture. Complete system solution targeting 23dBm output power is evaluated. System level simulation result shows that, with linear power combiner, LINC consumes more power than DC if non-clipping modulation scheme used. And polar system has stringent 3 degree phase matching and 0.5 dB gain matching requirements to meet EVM and spectrum mask specifications.

Abstract:Power amplifier as the power source of wireless power transfer system is a critical part in this system, al?so called witricity. To improve the efficiency of the whole system and adapt to different coil structure, a high effi?ciency class?E power amplifier is developed. To determine the S?parameters in modelling board layout for electro?magnetic analysis, the method of moments ( MOM) is employed. Also the electromagnetic compatibility issues in designing are carefully considered. This paper provides the design steps and simulation results. The practical am?plifier can provides a peak Power?Added?Efficiency of 93% with a power gain of 19?9 dB at an output power of 43?9 dBm. A power gain of 19 dB and PAE of 89% can be achieved for different coil structure. A PAE more than 60% can be got for different internal resistance or coil distance coil structure. Those experimental results confirm positively the feasibility of the proposed work.

Abstract:We study radio frequency (RF) wireless power transfer (WPT) using a digital radio transmitter for applications where alternative analog transmit circuits are impractical. An important parameter for assessing the viability of an RF WPT system is its end-to-end efficiency. In this regard, we present a prototype test bed comprising a software-defined radio (SDR) transmitter and an energy-harvesting receiver with a low resistive load; employing an SDR makes our research meaningful for simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT). We analyze the effect of clipping and nonlinear amplification at the SDR on multisine waveforms. Our experiments suggest that when the direct current (dc) input power at the transmitter is constant, high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) multisines are unsuitable for RF WPT over a flat-fading channel, due to their low average radiated power. The results indicate that the end-to-end efficiency is positively correlated with the average RF power of the waveform and that it reduces with increasing PAPR. Consequently, digital modulations, such as phase shift keying (PSK) and quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM), yield better end-to-end efficiency than multisines. Moreover, the end-to-end efficiency of PSK and QAM signals is invariant to the transmission bit rate. An in-depth analysis of the end-to-end efficiency of WPT reveals that the transmitter efficiency is lower than the receiver efficiency. Furthermore, we study the impact of a reflecting surface on the end-to-end efficiency of WPT and assess the transmission quality of the information signals by evaluating their error vector magnitude (EVM) for SWIPT. Overall, the experimental observations of end-to-end efficiency and EVM suggest that, while employing an SDR transmitter with fixed dc input power, a baseband quadrature PSK signal is most suitable for SWIPT at large, among PSK and QAM signals.

Abstract:Microwave power transmission served as the core technology of the Space Solar Power Satellite (SSPS) was studied. The rectifying surface was researched based on the concept of perfectly matched layer to solve the problem that beam collection efficiency would decline with distance away from transmitting antenna because of the spread of beam, by changing perfectly matched layer structure conjugate match between antenna output impedance and rectifier circuit input impedance. The rectifying surface exhibits a strong restrain to high-order harmonics, without the need of RF filter which is an important element for the traditional rectenna, so the circuit structure is simple and high conversion efficiency energy can be realized. And under the proposed limit for the center-of-beam power density to assure environmental health and safety for microwave transmission, an experimental system with solid power amplifier at 5. 8 GHz was constructed and tested, and the maximum conversion efficiency is 57. 7%. The experiment results show that the designed microwave power transmission system is benefit for ground demonstration testing in miniature version and building of SSPS in future.

Abstract:We report on the theoretical design and experimental verification of a high efficiency microwave wireless power transmission (MWPT) system operating in the Fresnel region. To achieve high conversion efficiency over a transmit distance of 11 meters, the transmit reflector antenna was optimized to locate the focal point at 11 m. The size of the receive antenna was decided by calculating the field distribution and the received power at different positions in the receive antenna aperture. Furthermore, an accurate model of the diode is presented, which was imported into the ADS software for high-precision rectifying circuit design. As a result, an overall DC-DC conversion efficiency of 20% was achieved, as measured in an anechoic chamber at a given distance of 11 m. The experimental results validated the proposed method.

Abstract:W-band (75-110 GHz) is a potential radio frequency band to provide long-distance wireless links for mobile data transmission. This paper proposes and experimentally demonstrates high-speed wireless transmission at W-band using photonics-aided method, including optical heterodyne, photonics-aided down-conversion without RF oscillator and coherent detection. A comparison between the photonics-aided method and the conventional electronic method employing solid-state electronic devices is conducted for the first time. The photonics-aided method is shown to offer advantages such as lower harmonic components, spur, reduced nonlinearity, and no local oscillator leakage, results in a 2.5 dB better performance of the photonic-aided W-band mm-wave transmitter compared to the electronic one. In the terms of receiver, the photonics-aided method can surpass the electronic method, with the help of larger electro-optical modulator bandwidth and lower drive voltage in the photonic down-conversion stage. Ultimately, using the photonics-aided method, a recorded equivalent transmission distance of 29km@84GHz and 45km@75.6GHz is achieved respectively for 1Gbaud QPSK signal.

Abstract:A 700MHz direct-conversion transceiver based on the IEEE802.16e standard has been designed and implemented. The transceiver employs TDD mode and high digital IF technology, which makes the architecture and design of the RF transceiver simplified. The experiment results show that the transceiver possesses the features of high linearity, low noise figure and phrase noise, excellent EVM, high dynamic range, compact and high stability, and is fit for mobile applications of WiMAX.

Abstract:Radio power transmission is studied herein. A rectenna with high‐efficiency microwave power transmission is proposed. Improvement on the traditional Yagi antenna structure is implemented by using a rectenna. In this design, the antenna is fed by a coplanar waveguide, and the impedance bandwidth is widened by adding a set of radiation dipoles. A set of parasitic directors is used to enhance the directionality of the antenna. A rectifier circuit based on a power‐recovery network is designed using an open branch‐line network with harmonic rejection characteristics as a low‐pass filter. The rectifier network topology is adopted with a diode in parallel connection to increase the output voltage of the circuit. The reflected power generated by the impedance mismatch can be recycled by the power‐recovery network. Thus, the rectifying efficiency can be improved. Finally, experimental data show that the radiofrequency–direct current power conversion efficiency of the rectenna can be as high as 77.5% at the operating frequency 2.45 GHz and the input power 12 dBm. The proposed rectenna can be potentially used for the power supply of various wireless sensor nodes with high efficiency.

Abstract:Power consumption is one of the most stringent bottlenecks in mobile devices. In this paper, we investigate the joint effect of MAC and PHY layers on power efficiency in IEEE 802.11 a WLAN. Specifically, we study the link adaptation for a power efficient transmission by selecting a proper transmission mode and power level with the aid of our derived power efficiency model. This study addresses the fundamental impact of the CSMA MAC protocol on the power efficiency of IEEE 802.11a WLANs. Some implications for system design are also discussed. In particular, we show that the non-radio-transmission power plays an important role in the power optimization of IEEE 802.11a WLAN.

Abstract:Compared to the existing lower frequency wireless power transfer, millimeter wave (mmWave) power transfer takes advantage of the high-dimensional multi-antenna and narrow beam transmission. In this paper we introduce wireless power transfer for mmWave cellular networks. Here, we consider users with large energy storage that are recharged by the mmWave base stations prior to uplink information transmission, and analyze the average harvested energy and average achievable rate. Numerical results corroborate our analysis and show that the serving base station plays a dominant role in wireless power transfer, and the contribution of the interference power from the interfering base stations is negligible, even when the interfering base stations are dense. By examining the average achievable rate in the uplink, when increasing the base station density, a transition from a noise-limited regime to an interference-limited regime is observed.

Abstract:With broader available bandwidth, W-band wireless transmission has attracted a lot of interests for future Giga-bit communication. In this article, we experimentally demonstrate W-band radio-over-fiber (RoF) system employing single-sideband single-carrier (SSB-SC) modulation with lower peak-to-average-power ratio (PAPR) than orthogonal frequency division multiplex (OFDM). To overcome the inter-symbol interference (ISI) of the penalty from uneven frequency response and SSB-SC modulation, frequency domain equalizer (FDE) and decision feedback equalizer (DFE) are implemented. We discuss the maximum available bandwidth of different modulation formats between SSB-SC and OFDM signals at the BER below forward error correction (FEC) threshold (3.8 x 10(-3)). Up to 50-Gbps 32-QAM SSB-SC signals with spectral efficiency of 5 bit/s/Hz can be achieved. (C) 2014 Optical Society of America

Abstract:This paper focuses on the design of an optimal resource allocation scheme to maximize the energy efficiency (EE) in the wireless-powered backscatter communication networks (WPBCN) with decode and forward (DF) relaying. The two different devices are supported to operate in different modes, the harvest-then-transmit (HTT) mode and backscatter communication (BackCom) mode, respectively. In particular, we formulate an optimization problem to maximize system EE by jointly optimizing the transmit power of hybrid access point (H-AP) and the system time resource allocation. To deal with the nonconvex problem, we investigate the characteristics of the EE expression and a variable substitution approach. Then, the optimal power allocation scheme and iterative optimization algorithm were derived for achieving maximum EE. Extensive simulation results have demonstrated that the system EE can be improved about 10% because the proposed scheme provides more flexibility to utilize the resource efficiently by employing the proposed scheme.

Abstract:To accommodate multistandard wireless communications, energy-efficient concurrent dual-band transmitter, related digital predistortion (DPD) methods as well as crest factor reduction (CFR) will be investigated in this paper. For efficiency enhancement in dual-band power amplifiers (PAs), an inter-modulation tuning (IM-Tuning) technique is employed in dual-band concurrent Doherty PA design. To reduce the complexity of conventional two dimensional DPD (2D-DPD) model, an error variation ranking-based (EVR) pruning method is proposed and demonstrated for dual band applicaiton. Finally, a two dimensional crest factor reduction (2D-CFR) algorithm will be studied to improve the output power and linearity simutanesouly.

Abstract:In recent years, network densification and edge caching become effective approaches to reduce the burden on the fronthaul links and the content delivery latency for wireless communication systems. However, maximizing system spectral efficiency cannot directly provide any insight on their energy requirements/efficiency for cache-enabled millimeter-wave (mmWave) radio access networks (RANs). In this paper, we study the design of energy-efficient transceiver, consisting of analog and digital precoder/combiner, for the delivery phase of the downlink of cache-enabled mmWave RANs. Due to the non-convexity of the delivery rate and objective, the coupling between the digital and analog precoders/combiners, and the constant module constraint on the elements of analog precoders/combiners, the problem of interest is non-convex and hard to obtain the global optimal solution, even the local optimal solution. To this end, we first overcome these challenges one-by-one and then transform the original problem into tractable one. Finally, an algorithmic framework that converges to the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker solution with provable is developed to achieve the design of energy-efficient transceiver. Numerical results are provided to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm, where fully digital precoding is used as benchmark.

Per simulations, the novel architecture with the proposed reconfiguration strategy is confirmed with the improvement of the power efficiency for the network.
A Dual-Carrier IR-based UWB Transmitter with Improved Spectral Efficiency

Abstract:This paper describes a dual-carrier pulse-based ultra-wideband (UWB) transmitter for wireless personal area networks (WPANs). The UWB transmitter designed in 0.18µm CMOS realizes an impulse radio communication using 3–5GHz and 6–10GHz bands with low power and low complexity. By using the multi-phase technique, the proposed dual band transmitter significantly reduces the noise power in 5–6GHz WLAN bands while meeting the FCC noise mask efficiently. Binary phase shift keying (BPSK) and pulse position modulation (P PM) are employed to generate pulses of 1ns duration and two center frequencies of 4GHz and 8GHz. Simulation results show that the pulse generator consumes 8.1pJ/b with the minimum data rate of 1Gb/s. When the system works in high speed mode, the dual band pulse carries two bits per period to have the data rate doubled.

Abstract:An energy-efficient millimeter-wave transceiver with direct-modulation digital transmitter (TX), I/Q phase-coupled frequency synthesizer and Substrate-Integrated Waveguide (SIW) E-shaped patch antenna is presented in this paper. The proposed transceiver achieves the 10-Gbps data rate while consuming 340.4 mW. The measured Over-the-Air (OTA) EVM is -13.8 dB. The energy efficiency is 34 pJ/bit, which is a significant improvement compared with the state-of-the-art mm-wave transceivers.
High-Performance Control in Radio Frequency Power Amplification Systems

Abstract:This thesis presents a broad study of methods for increasing the efficiency of narrow-band radio transmitters. The study is centered around the base station application and TETRA/TEDS networks. The general solution space studied is that of envelope tracking applied to linear class-A/B radio frequency power amplifiers (RFPAs) in conjunction with Cartesian feedback (CFB) used to linearize the overall transmitter system. On a system level, it is demonstrated how envelope tracking is particularly useful for RF carriers with high peak-to-average power ratios, such as TEDS with 10dB. It is also demonstrated how the envelope tracking technique introduces a number of potential pitfalls to the system, namely in the form of power supply ripple intermodulation (PSIM), reduced RFPA linearity and a higherimpedance supply rail for the RFPA. Design and analysis techniques for these three issues are introduced and demonstrated. On subcomponent level, solutions for implementing the envelope tracking power supply are proposed and demonstrated. A number of buck-type DCDC converter topologies are investigated and compared, with the objective of showing the trade-offs involved between switching frequency, control bandwidth and ripple voltage. It is found that the simple fourth-order filter buck converter is ideal for TETRA and TEDS envelope tracking power supplies. The problem of extracting maximum control bandwidth from a given power topology is given particular attention, with a range of, arguably new, insights resulting. It is clearly shown that single-phase switch-mode control systems based on oscillation (controlled unstable operation) of the whole power train provide the highest possible control bandwidth. A study of the limitations of Cartesian feedback is also included. It is shown that bandwidths in excess of 4MHz can be achieved for a 400MHz carrier frequency using readily available discrete components. Even higher CFB bandwidths are the key to flexible RFPA system capable of transmitting multiple RF carriers simultaneously. A number of key problem areas are identified and shown to need further research. Practically demonstrated is a high-efficiency 25W TEDS transmitter capable of meeting all base station adjacent channel power ratio and wideband noise specifications with ample margins. Efficiency is improved from 23% to 44% by application of envelope tracking almost a doubling at the cost of a single-phase buck converter and without any penalties in RFPA output spectrum purity.

Abstract:To meet the ever growing traffic in mobile communication, mmWave (millimeter-Wave) frequency bands have gained considerable attention for having a greater amount of bandwidth available than the current cellular spectrum below 3 GHz. Several test systems have been reported on recently to validate the possibility of mmWave links in mobile scenarios. However, there still exist practical issues to enable the application of mmWave in mobile communication, including reliability and cost. In this article, we present some new designs that address these issues, where system architecture, transceiver architecture, and related issues such as circuits and antenna arrays are considered. Hypercellular architecture is applied in mmWave mobile networks to overcome blockage problems, and a Butler-matrix-based HBF (Hybrid Beamforming) architecture is considered in an mmWave link. Simulations and experimental results are presented to validate the effectiveness of the Butler-matrix-based system.

Abstract:A RF generator for all-digital transmitter is presented. High speed band-pass ΣΔ modulation and multi-stage FIR filter techniques are applied in the design to reduce power while assuring speed and accuracy. The chip is manufactured in TSMC 65 nm 1P9M GP CMOS process. Measurement results indicate that the chip could work at the frequency 1.408 GHz and the in-band SNR for inputting single tone signal is 53.19 dB when power voltage is 1.1 V. The ACPR of modulator output meet the requirements of WCDMA and the most consumption is 32 mW when WCDMA signal is processed.
