Abstract:The work and heat exchange network synthesis problem refers to the problem of determining a network of heat exchangers and pressure equipment that minimize the total annual cost or exergy consumption, where the thermodynamic paths (i.e., pressure-change and temperature-change paths) are variable. In this work, an efficient optimization strategy is presented, consisting of two synthesis phases. In the targeting phase, a novel targeting model is introduced to identify the optimal thermodynamic paths of process streams. The genetic algorithm in the outer level is applied to adjust the streams' temperatures, and the golden section search method in the inner level is used to adjust the hot utility consumption. With the obtained thermodynamic paths, the detailed heat exchanger network is determined using a global search algorithm in the design phase. The integrated methodology is applied to four cases. Except for the illustrating example, results show a decrease of 4.26% in the total annual cost (TAC) for the liquefied natural gas (LNG) example, 48.7% in the TAC for the postcombustion CO2 capture example, and 1.05% in the TAC for the two-stage membrane separation process example.

Abstract:Work and heat are the two major forms of energy consumption in the process industry. They are respectively consumed in the work exchange and heat exchange networks. Because of the tight interactions between these two networks, a growing number of researchers tend to consider them as a whole: work and heat exchange networks (WHENs). However, this is a complicated system that includes not only pressure manipulation units but also heat exchangers. To synthesize such a complicated system, we propose a two-phase strategy: targeting and design. In the targeting phase, the optimal thermodynamic paths of process streams are determined by optimizing the utility consumption and estimated capital investments. To represent possible thermodynamic paths of unclassified process streams, we propose a novel stage-wise superstructure where the utility consumption and heat exchanger area of the HEN part are estimated by an extended pinch analysis method under the assumption of vertical heat transfer. With obtained thermodynamic paths, the HEN synthesis problem in the design phase is carried out by the well-known stage-wise superstructure (SWS) model. Two literature examples are presented to illustrate the effectiveness and applicability of the proposed method. In two case studies, our approach yields WHENs with 30.7 and 28.3% lower total annual cost, respectively.

Abstract:This work describes a systematic procedure to integrate a heat exchanger network (HEN) considering heat and flow exergy consumptions. The flow exergy consumption by the HEN is calculated by means of pressure drop correlation and stepwise optimization. Case studies reveal that the flow exergy loss changes the two-way trade-off between the operating cost and the capital cost in the traditional method. The introduction of heat exergy loss adds the weight of energy cost by considering both the external utility consumption and internal heat exergy loss in the HEN, which benefits heat recovery and energy conservation at the cost of more area and investment. In contrast, the flow exergy loss shifts the balance to the capital cost by adding the cost relating to area in terms of flow frictional dissipation.

Abstract:Heatexchanger networks (HENs) discharge a large amount of low-gradeheat to the cold utilities, resulting in excessive energy consumption.Organic Rankine cycle (ORC) which converts low-grade heat into electricityis a promising technology to recover such low-grade heat. The operatingparameters of ORCs are determined according to the amount and qualityof the low-grade heat generated from the HEN. Therefore, it is necessaryto optimize the ORC and the HEN simultaneously, which is the goalof this work. The proposed model adds the ORC streams of uncertaintemperature and pressure into the stage-wise superstructure of theHEN. The thermodynamic behavior of the ORC streams is predicted bypolynomial regression instead of the highly nonlinear Peng–Robinsonequation of state. Both single basic ORC and dual independent basicORCs are considered in the model. As a result, solving the proposedmodel could obtain ORC parameters, including the evaporation temperature,condensation temperature, and flow rate of working fluids, and HENparameters involving the matches of process-to-process and process-to-ORCsimultaneously. Case studies prove that the simultaneous method performsbetter than the sequential method, and superior results have beenobtained compared to those in the literature.

Abstract:Heat exchanger network (HEN) is one of the most important parts in chemical process industry, owing to its significant advantages of energy recovery. However, models with plentiful HEN structures always result in complex mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) models with non-convexity of nonlinear constraints, which will cause heavy computational burdens. The computational time of MINLP models and even the feasibility of models without good initial points are still challenging researchers. This paper presents a novel transshipment type model for heat exchanger network synthesis (HENS), which is formulated as a MINLP problem with all linear constraints. Stream splitting, stream by-pass, isothermal and nonisothermal mixing, and recycling flows are all included, while multiple utilities are available in the model. Furthermore, new formulations are presented to calculate the temperature difference of heat exchangers, while a more precise heat exchanger area calculation method by piecewise calculation is developed in the new model. Six literature examples are presented to illustrate the effectiveness and applicability of the proposed model. It is shown that several better results are obtained by the proposed model. Abstract:Owing to the growing environmental concerns, super-critical and ultra-supercritical coal-fired power plants dominate the electricity generation with the demand of near-zero air pollutant emission in China. Therefore, it is highly expected to assess the environmental impact and optimize the design at global and local levels. Exergoenvironmental analysis is a valid approach to investigate the formation of environmental impacts (EIs) associated with energy conversion systems at the component level. It generates information crucial for designing systems with a lower overall environmental impact, based on life cycle assessment (LCA) and exergy analysis. A 600 MW supercritical coal-fired system with and without dust, SO2 and NOx mitigation controls was analyzed. Heat transfer in the boiler, condenser(CND), low pressure cylinder(LP), air preheater(APH) show high potential to decrease the environmental impact due to high exergy destructions. The deaerator (DEA), induced draft fan(IDF), forced draft fan(FDF) should be focussed on construction design and manufacturing optimization. Purification units reveal high benefit for reducing EI produced by coal combustion, but there is a large space for the EI saving for it. The specific EI of electricity in China is much greater than European.

Abstract:Energy and resources saving is of significance to sustainable development. In the past decades, heat integrated water allocation networks (HIWANs) have been applied to generate effective strategies for water and energy management in chemical process industries, where large amounts of water and energy are consumed. In this paper, a graphical approach for the synthesis of heat exchanger networks (HENs) in HIWANs has been proposed to reveal the new insights into T–H/H–F diagrams and fully exploit the HEN structure possibilities. Current conceptual design methods for HENs in HIWANs by the original separate systems (T–H diagram) and the matching composite curve (H–F diagram) only generate two special kinds of HEN structures: series and parallel structures. A transformation method is proposed to generate HENs with different structures based on these two tools. Abstract:Integrating a heat pump into a heat exchanger network (HEN) can effectively recover the low-grade heat and reduce energy consumption. In this paper, a multi-objective optimization model on a HEN retrofit with a heat pump is proposed, with the goals of minimizing the total annual cost for the retrofit and maximizing the total annual CO2 emission reduction simultaneously. The Pareto front of these two objectives is obtained by solving the proposed model. Each point on the Pareto front corresponds to the optimal configuration of the heat pump and the process heat exchangers near the pinch of the HEN. The effect of the heat pump on the economic efficiency and CO2 emission reduction of the HEN are analyzed. The results indicate that integrating the heat pump into the HEN can improve the recovery of low-grade heat and reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions. However, the integration of the heat pump into a HEN could offset the benefits from CO2 emission reduction by energy savings, in which the CO2 emission reduction is restricted by a critical power input and a critical temperature rise. Consequently, rational installation and reasonable operation parameters of heat pump become significantly important to simultaneously ensure the reduction of CO2 emissions and energy savings in HEN retrofit. Abstract:A multi-objective optimization method of heat exchanger network (HEN) on the basis of partition of minimum approach temperature (Delta T-min) intervals is proposed to minimize the total annual cost and accumulated CO2 emissions in construction and operation phases. In this method, both dominant and recessive CO2 emissions are considered, and the effects of Delta T-min on multi-objective optimization problems of HEN are investigated. We find that a multi-objective optimization problem may reduce to a single objective optimization problem as Delta T-min changes. The critical Delta T-min that distinguishes the intervals for the single objective optimization and the multi-objective optimization problem can be identified by combining the pinch analysis and mathematical programming method. The optimal structure and CO2 emissions of HEN are obtained in the single objective optimization problem, whereas the Pareto front of two objectives and a trade-off strategy are obtained in the multi-objective optimization problem. The HEN in a vacuum gas oil hydro-treating unit in a refinery is taken as a case study. Results indicate that the partition of Delta T-min intervals helps to identify the nature of the multi-objective optimization problems and reduce the computation loads of the multi-objective optimization problem of HENs. In addition, the optimal solutions of HEN obtained by the epsilon-constraint method distribute uniformly, and the dominant objective changes gently within the intervals of Delta T-min for the multi-objective optimization. Abstract:Integrating the Heat Exchanger Network (HEN) by Pinch Technology is an efficient method to decrease energy consumption. In a HEN, some source and sink streams, and their heating and cooling duties are dictated by the reactor. Hence, the reactor design affects the integration of HEN. There is the possibility to reduce the utility further by adjusting the reactor design parameters. To achieve this, it is necessary to consider the influence of reactor on the HEN integration.In this work, a graphical method is proposed to analyze the effect of the reactor's uncertainty of VGO hydrotreating process. Since the variation of the reactor parameters affects the inlet and outlet streams' target and/or supply temperature, the temperature variation of the corresponding source and sink is accommodated by shifting the corresponding inflection point of the composite curve. Correspondingly, the part of the composite curve below or above the inflection point is shifted to target the heating and/or cooling utility. When the operating parameter of the reactor changes, whether the pinch will change or not can be identified by the proposed method, as well as the minimum heating and cooling utilities.

Abstract:Heat exchanger network synthesis is an essential optimisation tool for Process Integration, particularly in energy-intensive industries. Proper design or retrofit of heat exchanger network can enable energy conservation, efficiency improvement, and process debottlenecking. Many earlier pieces of research have focused on the impact of the network structure and process features such as network topology, temperature intervals, continuous/batch processes, and so on. As the major device in heat exchanger networks, heat exchangers research has always been a hot topic. However, the individual heat exchanger research is different from the number of heat exchangers in a network. Various performance aspects of the heat exchangers, e.g., pressure drop, fouling, and thermal performance, could influence the whole network and the passive responses between each heat exchanger. Besides, integrating those aspects of individual heat exchangers into the network synthesis is still an open problem, especially for cases that demand simultaneous optimisations. This work presents a thorough assessment of research into those aspects in heat exchanger networks, as well as the state-of-the-art of current approaches for heat exchanger networks optimisation that take heat exchanger performance into account. The essential coupling among fouling, pressure drop and thermal design is explored, and the nexus between them and the heat exchanger network is analysed. Researchers will benefit from this overview of heat exchanger network synthesis retrofitting methods and applications.

Abstract:Heat exchanger network synthesis (HENS) is an effective tool for heat recovery in chemical and petrochemical industries. This study aims to show a method for HENS with the consideration of different shell-side flow arrangements in shell-and-tube heat exchangers. The proposed MINLP model is modified from the stage-wise superstructure model, incorporating newly developed correlations for shell-side pressure drop calculation for the helical baffle. The objective is to minimise the total annual cost (TAC) with a trade-off between the cost of different shell-side heat exchangers, utility cost, and pumping cost. The selection of baffle design is decided by the saved pumping cost and the increased area cost. The proposed model is tested from different points of view: with/without utility constraints and different statuses of the streams. Three case studies are presented and compared with the results from the literature. The proposed method with different shell-side baffles can reduce the heat transfer area and pressure drop. For fixed utility consumptions, the TAC in a case study is decreased by 8.9% with mixed baffle types. Although the unit per area cost of the helical baffle is higher than the segmental baffle, the increased investment cost could be compensated by the reduced operation cost, especially for plants with high viscosity streams and long-term cost-saving.

Abstract:Work exchange is a promising innovative technology in recovering residual pressure energy. However, at the systematic level, the comprehensive utilization of different energy resources in an energy system has become an issue of concern. In this work, a systematic approach is proposed, one that successively integrates heat, work and adjusts operation parameters. A detailed procedure for building a heat-work coupling transfer network is provided. The synthesis mainly consists of constructing a work exchange sub-network with pinch analysis based on positive displacement type work exchangers. Simultaneously, another kind of sub-network based on turbine-type work exchangers is built as a schematic comparison. The influence of applying a positive displacement work exchanger on the system is investigated. Finally, as a case study, a renovation design of a typical rectisol process in the coal-water slurry gasification section of an ammonia plant is presented. The results show that the added work exchanger has little impact on the existing heat exchange sub-network. Moreover,extra pressure energy is recovered by coupling the transfer network. It is concluded that the heat-work systematic design is a promising and powerful method to use energy more efficiently.

Abstract:<p>Controllability issue of heat exchanger networks (HENs) has drawn an increasing attention in recent years. Currently, the study of controllability of HENs is still towards a certain network structure, which is still not able to integrate controllability within HEN synthesis. To overcome this challenge, a new two-stage optimization framework is proposed in this work to implement the HEN design with economy and controllability automatically incorporated. In the first stage, an iterative procedure is developed to incorporate the optimization of network and control structure. Two controllability rules, referring to network structure design and control loops selection, are introduced to ensure the initial network structure is endowed with good controllability property, and the disturbance propagation and control (DP&C) model is re-formulated based on superstructure presentation to perform the automatic evaluation of controllability. Afterwards, the decision variable optimization stage is executed to further optimize the results by taking the locations and fractions of bypasses as decision variables. Finally, two cases are studied and the results show that the controllability are improved by 10.6% and 30.0%, respectively, with a less increment of total cost. Based on the results, the inconsistent effect of bypass fraction on cost and controllability has been also discussed.</p>

Abstract:Practical implementation of indirect heat integration for non-continuous processes is limited compared to direct heat integration of continuous processes, due to requirement of heat storage units, a greater number of heat exchangers and more complex of heat recovery network. To promote the implementation of indirect heat integration in the industries, this paper proposes a new graphical methodology to synthesise the cost-effective Heat Exchanger Storage Networks (HESN) for non-continuous processes, which integrates both Heat Exchanger Network (HEN) and Thermal Energy Storage System (TESS) together using the Batch Stream Temperature Enthalpy Plot (Batch STEP). Batch STEP adapts and extends the STEP tool for the Heat Exchanger Network (HEN) synthesis and retrofit of continuous processes. Compared to other graphical and mathematical modelling approaches, Batch STEP provides valuable insights to determine the number and operating temperatures of the Heat Recovery Loops (HRLs), as well as allows the flexible selection of the process heat sources and sinks to be integrated into the appropriate HRLs in synthesising the HESN. The systematic procedures of mapping the individual processes in Batch STEP, synthesising the HESN based on the Batch STEP and sizing of heat storage units (HSUs) using Volume Problem Table Algorithm (Volume PTA) are described in this work. Application of the proposed methodology on an illustrative case study resulted in hot utility savings of 78.8%, cold utility savings of 77.9% and greenhouse gas emission reduction of 78.8% via a HESN with payback period of 2.72 years. This work is expected to empower the users to synthesise the HESN in a user-friendly and cost-effective manner to support the decarbonisation for non-continuous industrial processes.

Abstract:Heat Integration with heat exchanger network (HEN) is a widely used way to save energy and improve efficiency. Varied types of heat exchangers and materials would influence the investment cost and affect the design of HEN retrofit. This paper critically reviews the features of various types of heat exchangers, their working conditions and investment costs, as well as the state-of-the-art of the current methods for HEN synthesis and retrofit, to introduce a framework for HEN retrofit which considers heat exchanger and material selection. The proposed framework divides the retrofit design process into two stages, diagnosis and optimisation. In the diagnosis stage, two graphical decision-making tools, the Shifted Retrofit Thermodynamic Grid Diagram with Shifted Heat Exchanger Temperature Range (SRTGD-SHTR) and Shifted Material Temperature Range (SRTGD-SMTR) are proposed for analysis and diagnosis of the existing HEN to determine feasible retrofit plans with pre-selected heat exchangers and materials. In the optimisation stage, the constrained particle swarm optimisation algorithm is applied to optimise the plans made in the first stage and minimise the total annual cost. A case study demonstrates a possible implementation of the proposed framework. The suitable types for new heat exchangers and their materials are selected, and the retrofitted design can reduce the utility cost by 8.9% compared with the existing HEN. This framework can be applied easily with a sound solution for HEN retrofit.
Design and Analysis of Heat Exchanger Networks for Integrated Ca-Looping Systems

Abstract:One of the main challenges of carbon capture and storage technologies deals with the energy penalty associated with CO2 separation and compression processes. Thus, heat integration plays an essential role in the improvement of these systems' efficiencies. CO2 capture systems based on Ca-looping process present a great potential for residual heat integration with a new supercritical power plant. The pinch methodology is applied in this study to define the minimum energy requirements of the process and to design four configurations for the required heat exchanger network. The Second Law of Thermodynamics represents a powerful tool for reducing the energy demand since identifying the exergy losses of the system serves to allocate inefficiencies. In parallel, an economic analysis is required to asses the cost reduction achieved by each configuration. This work presents a combination of pinch methodology with economic and exergetic analyses to select the more appropriate configuration of heat exchanger network. Step-by-step retrofit of heat exchanger network with heat pump installation and multi-objective optimization strategies

Abstract:In order to investigate the comprehensive effects of heat pump installation on energy saving and CO2 emission reduction in heat exchanger network (HEN) retrofit, a step-by-step multi-objective optimization model with combination of multiple strategies was proposed for HEN retrofit, in which the objective was to minimize the annual HEN retrofit cost and newly increased CO2 emissions. A HEN retrofit problem of a benzol-ketone dewaxing unit was taken to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. The Pareto fronts that represented the trade-offs between economy and CO2 emission were presented. The location of heat pump installation in HEN was discussed. For the three retrofit strategies, the effects of economy, CO2 emission and energy saving were compared and analyzed. The proposed method would provide theoretical fundamentals for formulating schemes of energy conservation and CO2 emission control in process industries.
An engineering target-oriented multi-scenario heat exchanger network retrofit methodology with consideration of exergoeconomic assessment

Abstract:Energy efficiency in process systems has attracted increasing attention due to the benefits of decreased greenhouse gas emissions and improvements in sustainability. As a vital solution, the retrofit of heat exchanger networks (HENs) mainly focuses on recombining the existing heat exchangers or modifying the HEN topology by adding/removing heat exchangers. Yet, there are still challenges that need to be addressed for HENs retrofit problems. In this paper, a systematic HENs retrofit methodology with exergoeconomic assessment is proposed. To be consistent with the actual industrial application, three retrofit scenarios, namely heat transfer area distribution retrofit, topology retrofit without additional heat exchangers, and topology retrofit with additional heat exchangers, are considered in the retrofit optimization model. A typical HEN retrofit case in the crude distillation unit is tested. The comparative results indicate that the Scenarios 2 and 3 outperform the Scenario 2 since they have a relatively high annual profit ($3.42MM and $3.47MM) and a low exergy destruction coefficient (0.321 and 0.303). This study is helpful to address the engineering target-oriented HENs retrofit problems by considering different practical retrofit levels.
