Abstract:SO3 is an important sulfur oxide in coal-burning flue gas. Considering the disadvantaged sulfur-resistance of low-temperature SCR catalyst of MnOx/TiO2 and the high reactivity of SO3, experiment on the influence of SO3 on MnOx/TiO2 and Fe modified MnOx/TiO2 for elemental mercury (Hg0) removal was implemented systematically. Characterizations of Hg-TPD and XPS were conducted to explore related mechanisms over the effect of SO3 on Hg0 removal properties of the catalysts. The results showed that SO3 generated irreversible inhibition on Hg0 removal efficiency of MnOx/TiO2, which was led by transformation of Mn4+ and chemisorbed oxygen to MnSO4. The existence of water vapor would intensify the inhibition. The inhibitory effect was weakened and even converted to promotion with increase of temperature. Fe modification on MnOx/TiO2 improved Hg0 removal performance under SO3 condition and enhanced the resistance to SO3 poisoning since more active sites and chemisorbed oxygen were produced and Mn4+ was protected by formation of Fe2(SO4)3. SO3 showed negligible influence on Hg0 removal efficiencies of MnOx/TiO2 and Fe-MnOx/TiO2 in simulated coal-fired flue gas, and the efficiencies maintained excellent stability during a 12h experimental period. This study will supply valuable information for understanding the application prospect of MnOx/TiO2 for synergistic Hg0 removal comprehensively.
