Abstract:The high-temperature durability of SiBCN ceramics is significantly influenced by the boron concentration and synthesis methods. Although single-source synthetic routes allow one to obtain homogeneous ceramics at the atomic level, the content of the boron element therein is limited by borane (BH3). In this study, the synthesis of carborane-substituted polyborosilazanes was performed via a simple one-pot reaction of polysilazanes with alkyne bonds on the main chain and decaborododecahydrodiacetonitrile complexes with different molar ratios. This enabled one to vary the boron content from ∼0 to 40.00 wt %. The ceramic yields were in the range of 50.92-90.81 wt %. Independently of the borane concentration, SiBCN ceramics started to crystallize at 1200 °C, and B4C appeared as a new crystalline phase with increasing boron content. The introduction of boron inhibited the crystallization of Si3N4 and increased the crystallization temperature of SiC. The presence of the B4C phase improved both thermal stability and functional properties such as neutron-shielding characteristics of the ceramics. Therefore, this research opens up new prospects for the design of novel polyborosilanzes with great application potential.

Abstract:Polyborosilazanes with controllable B/N ratio were synthesized using high-boron-content m-carborane, dichloromethylsilane, and hexamethydisilazane. After high-temperature pyrolysis, Si–B–C–N quaternary ceramics with SiC and B4C as the main phases were obtained. The B/N ratio in the precursors corresponded to the change in the feeding ratio of carborane and dichloromethylsilane. The effects of boron content and B/N ratio on the ceramic precursors and microphase structure in Si–B–C–N quaternary ceramics were explored in detail through a series of analytical characterization methods. A high boron content results in a significant increase in the ceramic yield (up to 71 wt%) of polyborosilazanes, and at the same time, the B/N molar ratio was regulated from 28.4:1 to 1.62:1. The appearance of the B4C structure in the Si–B–C–N quaternary ceramics through the regulation of the B/N ratio, has rarely been reported.

Abstract:SiBCN ceramics have excellent high-temperature stability and anti-oxidation properties, and they are candidates for materials used at extreme conditions. In this paper, amorphous SiBCN(O) ceramics were obtained through pyrolysis of cross-linked polyborosilazanes. The element content could be readily tuned through adjusting the structures of polymer precursors. The cerminization process and microstructure evolution process were systematically investigated. The SiBCN(O) ceramics remain amorphous below 1400 °C. The carbothermal reduction was suppressed because of the presence of boron. The SiBCN(O) ceramics showed 95.7% and 99.2% carbon residual in argon and air at 1600 °C, indicating high-temperature stability and good anti-oxidation properties. These SiBCN(O) precursors/ceramics could be potentially used in composites or protective coatings for harsh environments.

Abstract:Incorporation of B atoms into SiOC ceramic can suppress the carbothermal reaction and improve the thermal stability. Polymer derived ceramics from single source preceramic polymer is a good solution but the B/Si ratio could not be efficiently adjusted. In this article, a simple, low cost, but efficient method to synthesize SiBCO preceramic polymers was introduced. The B/Si ratio could be adjusted from 1:10 to 5:10, and transformed into SiB0.05C0.66O1.22, SiB0.07C0.62O1.28, and SiB0.27C0.54O1.32 upon sintering. The boron content could be readily tuned and the “pseudo low-temperature sintering” effect was systematically investigated. The boron content of sintered SiBCO ceramics could reach 4.9 wt%. The addition of boron suppresses the crystallization of β-SiC and improved thermal stability, indicating possible applications under harsh environments.

Abstract:Boron-containing organosilicon polymers are widely used under harsh environments as preceramic polymers for advanced ceramics fabrication. However, harmful chemicals released during synthesis and the complex synthesis routes have limited their applications. To solve the problems, a two-component route was adopted to synthesize cross-linked boron-containing silicone polymer (CPBCS) via a solventless process. The boron content and CPBCSs’ polymeric structures could be readily tuned through controlling the ratio of multifunctional boron hybrid silazane monomers (BSZ12) and poly[imino(methylsilylene)]. The CPBCSs showed high thermal stability and good mechanical properties. The CPBCS with Si-H/C=C ratio of 10:1 showed 75 wt% char yields at 1000 °C in argon, and the heat release capacity (HRC) and total heat release (THR) are determined to be 37.9 J/g K and 6.2 KJ/g, demonstrating high thermal stability and flame retardancy. The reduced modulus and hardness of CPBCS are 0.30 GPa and 2.32 GPa, respectively. The novel polysilazanes can be potentially used under harsh environments, such as high temperatures or fire hazards.

Abstract:One of the main features of SiBCN‐based ceramics is their high temperature stability with respect to crystallization and decomposition in protective atmospheres. High temperature studies of a polyborosilazane in air up to 1500 °C show that the formation of coexisting nano‐quartz and amorphous B2O3 is suitable for the application as adhesive for bonding advanced ceramics. Spectroscopic and X‐ray studies combined with thermal analysis clearly demonstrate the strong influence of the presence of air on the cross‐linking and pyrolysis behavior and, thus, finally on the ceramization process of the applied SiBCN preceramic polymer. Accordingly, cross‐linking and subsequent pyrolysis of the SiBCN‐precursor up to 1600 °C in air result in the formation of a network structure comprised of SiO2 and B2O3 with minor amounts of residual amorphous SiBCN. In contrast to the polymer‐to‐ceramic transformation of the used polyborosilazane in protective atmospheres like Ar or N2, the ceramic yield at 1400 °C is high and amounts 85.6 wt%. Furthermore, the elemental composition of the resulting SiBCNO does not change significantly at T > 1200 °C even after heat‐treatment at 1600 °C indicating the high temperature stability of the resulting SiBCNO material. Cross‐linking and pyrolysis of the SiBCN‐precursor in air up to 1600 °C forms a network structure comprised of SiO2 and B2O3. The elemental composition of the resulting SiBCNO does not change significantly from 1200 to 1600 °C, indicating the high temperature stability of the resulting SiBCNO material.

Abstract:The design of Si-(B)-C materials is investigated, with detailed insight into the precursor chemistry and processing, the precursor-to-ceramic transformation, and the ceramic microstructural evolution at high temperatures. In the early stage of the process, the reaction between allylhydridopolycarbosilane (AHPCS) and borane dimethyl sulfide is achieved. This is investigated in detail through solid-state NMR and FTIR spectroscopy and elemental analyses for Si/B ratios ranging from 200 to 30. Boron-based bridges linking AHPCS monomeric fragments act as crosslinking units, extending the processability range of AHPCS and suppressing the distillation of oligomeric fragments during the low-temperature pyrolysis regime. Polymers with low boron contents display appropriate requirements for facile processing in solution, leading to the design of monoliths with hierarchical porosity, significant pore volume, and high specific surface area after pyrolysis. Polymers with high boron contents are more appropriate for the preparation of dense ceramics through direct solid shaping and pyrolysis. We provide a comprehensive study of the thermal decomposition mechanisms, and a subsequent detailed study of the high-temperature behavior of the ceramics produced at 1000 °C. The nanostructure and microstructure of the final SiC-based ceramics are intimately linked to the boron content of the polymers. B4 C/C/SiC nanocomposites can be obtained from the polymer with the highest boron content.
Synthesis and Characterization of a Novel Borazine-Type UV Photo-Induced Polymerization of Ceramic Precursors.

Abstract:A preceramic polymer of B,B′,B′′-(dimethyl)ethyl-acrylate-silyloxyethyl-borazine was synthesized by three steps from a molecular single-source precursor and characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometry. Six-member borazine rings and acrylate groups were effectively introduced into the preceramic polymer to activate UV photo-induced polymerization. Photo-Differential Scanning Calorimetry (Photo-DSC) and real-time FTIR techniques were adapted to investigate the photo-polymerization process. The results revealed that the borazine derivative exhibited dramatic activity by UV polymerization, the double-bond conversion of which reached a maximum in 40 s. Furthermore, the properties of the pyrogenetic products were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), which proved the ceramic annealed at 1100 °C retained the amorphous phase.

Abstract:Tris(dichloromethylsilylethyl)borane is a compound containing a B–C bond and Cl and H elements. Herein, we propose a novel method to synthesize polyborosilazanes using tris(dichloromethylsilylethyl)borane and boron trichlorosilane as boron sources and hexamethyldisilazane as a nitrogen source. The microstructure and chemical composition of the as-synthesized polyborosilazanes and as-annealed SiBCN ceramics were investigated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope, and transmission electron microscope methods. The organic precursors were converted entirely into inorganic ceramics at 800 °C, and the ceramic yield of the polyborosilazanes was 88% at 1000 °C. SiBCN ceramics with irregular shapes contained chemical bonds of B–N, Si–N, and Si–C at 1500 °C and retained an amorphous structure below 1600 °C. After the first cycle, the fabricated SiBCN ceramic anodes exhibited a reversible capacity of 261.3 mA h/g, which was 2.6 times that reported in the literature (101 mA h/g). The discharge capacity decreased to 157.6 mA h/g after 30 cycles. The satisfactory electrochemical performance of the resulting SiBCN ceramic anodes can be attributed to the formation of conductive carbon species favoring the transport properties of lithium ion.

Abstract:In this work, two kinds of ceramic polymers, polyborosilazane and polyhafnoxane, were mixed by a precursor blending method, followed by curing and pyrolysis to obtain Hf-based SiBCN ceramics. Through FTIR and NMR characterization of cured product, it can be found that the two precursors underwent cross-linking reaction during the curing process, resulting in the increase of crystallization temperature of HfO2 and β-SiC, and the formation of new components (HfB2 and HfN) during pyrolysis. When the pyrolysis temperature increases, the average values of the real part and imaginary part of the dielectric constant of Hf-based SiBCN ceramics increased from 7.2 to 4.9 to 9.0 and 6.6, respectively, resulting from the precipitation of HfB2 and HfC(N) with high dielectric constants. The effective absorption width decreased from 3.4 to 2.5 GHz, and the minimum value of reflection coefficient increased from −14.9 to −12.2 dB, which is caused by poor impedance matching. After being oxidized at 500 °C for 50 h in air, the free carbon basically disappears, and the full X-band absorption can be realized for the Hf-based SiBCN ceramic pyrolyzed at 1500 °C with a thickness of 2.8 mm.

Abstract:SiAlON ceramics are of interest for high‐risk applications such as biomedical implants and combustion engine turbines. This work is part of a larger study aimed at leveraging atomic‐ or molecular‐scale additives to control the densification, microstructures, and ultimate structural properties of SiAlONs. Here, we investigate the effects of boron in silicon nitride‐based ceramics. The present work demonstrates a possible chemical method for controlling the microstructural development of SiAlONs by incorporating boric acid (H3BO3) into the starting powder blend. Raman spectroscopy and 11B solid‐state magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance cooperatively indicate that after sintering, boron exists in threefold coordination with nitrogen in the turbostratic boron nitride (t‐BN) structure. The results of this work indicate that the incorporation of boron and generation of t‐BN bonding in the SiAlON system result in a narrower grain size distribution, a suppression of second phases such as yttrium aluminosilicates, and ultimately, increased flexure strength. A separate fractographic study showed that SiAlONs fabricated with 3 wt% boric acid exhibited fracture origins such as subtle surface flaws or cracks, while lower dopant levels and undoped SiAlONs typically failed from flaws such as inclusions or large grains. It is argued that the modification of the intergranular glass chemistry and resulting generation of t‐BN reduces atomic diffusion through the grain boundary phase and inhibits the crystallization of second phases as well as exaggerated grain growth that often characterizes the development of β′‐SiAlON.
Phase evolution and oxidation resistance of Si3N4/HfB2/HfB C N1–– ceramic nanocomposites prepared from tailored preceramic polymers

Abstract:Single-source-precursor derived ceramics exhibit advantages for the preparation of Si-based ceramics with controllable phase composition and adjustable functional/mechanical properties, which has significant potential for (ultra)high temperature ceramic materials. Within the present work, a series of hafnium/boron-containing Si3N4-based ceramics (SiHfBCN) are prepared upon pyrolysis/annealing of the corresponding single-source-precursors in N2 atmosphere at different temperatures ranging from 1000 °C to 1700 °C. The high-temperature (micro)structural evolution with respect to the annealing temperatures and boron concentration was studied using X-ray powder diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The results show that the amorphous SiHfBCN ceramics convert upon crystallization into ceramic nanocomposites consisting of a α-Si3N4 matrix with embedded Si, HfB2, and HfB x C y N1–x–y . The formation and stability of HfB x C y N1–x–y solid solution were discussed in detail. Finally, the oxidation resistance of the obtained α-Si3N4/HfB2/HfB x C y N1–x–y ceramic nanocomposites was investigated by thermal gravimetric analysis in air.

Abstract:Boron nitride (BN) ceramic fibers containing amounts of silicon nitride (Si3N4) were prepared using hybrid precursors of poly(tri(methylamino)borazine) (PBN) and polycarbosilane (PCS) via melt-spinning, curing, decarburization under NH3 to 1000 °C and pyrolysis up to 1600 °C under N2. The effect of Si3N4 contents on the microstructure of the BN/Si3N4 composite ceramics was investigated. Series of the BN/Si3N4 composite fibers containing various amounts of Si3N4 from 5 wt% to 25 wt% were fabricated. It was found that the crystallization of Si3N4 could be totally restrained when its content was below 25 wt% in the BN/Si3N4 composite ceramics at 1600 °C, and the amorphous BN/Si3N4 composite ceramic could be obtained with a certain ratio. The mean tensile strength and Young’s modulus of the composite fibers correlated positively with the Si3N4 mass content, while an obvious BN (shell)/Si3N4 (core) was formed only when the Si3N4 content reached 25 wt%.

Abstract:Given the superior thermal stability and electromagnetic features, continuous Si-B-(C)-N ceramic fibers have displayed great potential to fulfill the increasing demand for the high-temperature structural and functional materials. Manufacture of such ceramic fibers depends heavily upon the design of processable polymer precursors. Herein, a class of polyborosilazanes (PBSZs) with high spinnability were created through a facile one-pot synthesis. The trade-off between spinnability and ceramic yield of PBSZs was overcome by using heptamethyldisilazane and hexamethyldisilazane as the co-condensing agents to polymerize silicon and boron chloride monomers. The optimal PBSZs can fabricate continuous Si-B-C-N fibers with homogeneous diameter of 7.9 ± 0.5 μm and high ceramic yield of 80 wt%. Experimental characterization and quantum chemical computation revealed the mechanistic pictures of the impact of pendant groups on the polycondensation, melt spinning, and pyrolyzing process. These insights improve our understanding of spinnable pre-ceramic polymers for exploiting high-performance nitride ceramic fibers.

Abstract:Boron nitride (BN) is a III-V compound which is the focus of important research since its discovery in the early 19th century. BN is electronic to carbon and thus, in the same way that carbon exists as graphite, BN exists in the hexagonal phase. The latter offers an unusual combination of properties that cannot be found in any other ceramics. However, these properties closely depend on the synthesis processes. This review states the recent developments in the preparation of BN through the chemistry, shaping and ceramic conversion of borazine derivatives. This concept denoted as Polymer-Derived Ceramics (PDCs) route allows tailoring the chemistry of precursors to elaborate complex BN shapes which cannot be obtained by conventional process. The effect of the chemistry of the molecular precursors, i.e., borazine and trichloroborazine, and their polymeric derivatives i.e., polyborazylene and poly[tri(methylamino)borazine], in which the specific functional groups and structural motifs determine the shaping potential by conventional liquid-phase process and plastic-forming techniques is discussed. Nanotubes, nano-fibers, coatings, monoliths and fiber-reinforced matrix composites are especially described. This leads to materials which are of significant engineering interest.

Synthesis and thermal stability of novel high-entropy metal boron carbonitride ceramic powders

Abstract:High-entropy metal boron carbonitride ceramic powders including (Ta0.2Nb0.2Zr0.2Hf0.2W0.2)BCN, (Ta0.2Nb0.2Zr0.2Hf0.2Ti0.2)BCN, and (Ta0.2Nb0.2Zr0.2Ti0.2W0.2)BCN, were successfully synthesized via mechanical alloying at room temperature. Results show that for the first step of 10 h milling, the amorphous BCN phases are observed. After 24 h of second step milling, the as-synthesized high-entropy ceramics exhibit a single face-centered cubic solid solution structure with high compositional uniformity from nano-scale to micron-scale. When heated to 1500 °C for 30min in flowing Ar, the as-prepared high-entropy ceramic powders still show relatively high thermal stability; however, some metals oxides like HfO2 and ZrO2 are detected due to the pre-existing oxides on sample surfaces. After heat treatment, some amorphous phases are still retained. This work suggests a new processing route on the synthesis of high-entropy metal boron carbonitride ceramics.

Structural Modulation and BC8 Enrichment of Silicon via Dynamic Decompression

Abstract:The modern very large-scale integration systems based on silicon semiconductor are facing the unprecedented challenges especially when transistor feature size lowers further, due to the excruciating tunneling effect and thermal management. Besides the common diamond cubic silicon, numerous exotic silicon allotropes with outstanding properties can emerge under high pressure, such as the metastable BC8 and metallic \b{eta}-tin structures. Despite much effort on the controlled synthesis in experiment and theory, the effective approach to rationally prepare Si phases with desired purity is still lacking and their transition mechanism remains controversial. Herein, we systematically investigated on the complicated structural transformations of Si under extreme conditions, and efficiently enriched BC8-Si phase via dynamic decompression strategy. The splendid purity of BC8-Si was achieved up to ~95%, evidently confirmed by Raman spectroscopy and synchrotron X-ray diffraction. We believe these results can shed a light on the controlled preparation of Si metastable phases and their potential applications in nanoelectronics.

Effects of Zr and chopped C fiber on microstructure and mechanical properties of SiBCN ceramics

Abstract:To further improve the thermal shock resistance and ablation resistance of SiBCN system ceramics targeted much harsh environment, both ultra-high temperature ceramic phases and carbon fibers are expected to be incorporated simultaneously as the reinforcements. However, tough problems like difficulty in densification as well as degradation of C fibers (Cf) due to interfacial reaction usually cannot be avoided. Thus, in this study, Zr as well as chopped Cf with BN coating were introduced into SiBCN ceramics by mechanical alloying and after hot-pressing sintering to prepare C/SiBCNZr composites. The structure and phase component development have been characterized in detail by XRD, SEM, TEM and XPS etc., and mechanical properties, fracture behavior and toughening mechanisms were also investigated. Zr-B and Zr-O bonds are detected besides Si-C, N-B and N-B-C bonds when pre-alloyed ZrB2 amorphous powder was incorporated into SiBCN system by further mechanical-alloying treatment. After hot-pressing, the ultra-high temperature phases of ZrB2 and ZrN were formed as expected besides the original matrix phases of BN(C) and SiC. Excellent mechanical properties can be obtained for SiBCNZr ceramic. The BN coating on carbon fibers successfully avoids the severe fiber degradation and makes it possible for moderating strong interface bonding, which ensuring the debonding, crack deflection, fiber pulling-out and bridging during the fracture. As a result, the C/SiBCNZr composites retain good mechanical properties and fractures in a pseudoplastic fracture manner, showing better potential applications in harsh environments. Optimization of the BN coating on Cf and Zr incorporation by pre-mechanical alloying can be a good route to achieve Cf/SiBCNZr composites with a better balance between thermal shock resistance, ablation resistance and mechanical properties.

Abstract:SiBCN films are synthesized by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition at a reduced pressure and 500-600 °C. Organoelement silicon and boron compounds are selected as precursors, namely, hexamethyldisilazane HN(SiMe 3 ) 2 and triethylaminoborane Et 3 N·BH 3 that were not used previously in the synthesis of SiBCN films. Vapor flows of initial compounds and additional gas (ammonia) were separately supplied to the reactor without premixing. The chemical bonding structure, elemental composition, surface morphology, and film deposition rate are studied by FTIR, XPS, wave dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, SEM, and Raman spectroscopy techniques. The surface morphology analysis of the samples shows that the films are smooth, homogeneous, and uniform without features. Variation of precursor concentrations in the initial mixture allows changes in the film composition in a wide range. The boron concentration in four-component coatings reaches 45 at.%. The study of chemical bonding structures of the films reveals the occurrence of Si–C, Si–N, B–N, C–H bonds along with the hybrid BC n N 3– n bond.
