Abstract:We have developed a series of Co-Cu bimetallic oxide nanocatalysts using an environmentally friendly water phase synthesis method, demonstrating significant potential in catalyzing the CO oxidation reaction. The 0.3Co3O4/0.7CuO nano-hybrid, with a feed ratio of 3:7 for Cobalt(II) chloride hexahydrate to Copper(II) chloride dihydrate, exhibited a CO catalytic oxidation T 90 approximately 70 degrees C lower than that of a single transition metal oxide material. Building on this, we enhanced the catalysts by incorporating CeO2 nanoparticles to produce Co3O4/CuO/CeO2 oxide nanocatalysts. By varying the amount of CeO2 nanoparticles added to the 0.3Co3O4/ 0.7CuO catalyst, we achieved further improvement in the CO oxidation performance. Specifically, the T 90 of the CO catalytic oxidation reaction for the 0.3Co3O4/0.7CuO/0.7CeO2 material was approximately 30 degrees C lower than that of 0.3Co3O40.7CuO. Various characterization methods, such as XRD, EDX, and in situ FT-IR, were employed to investigate the impact of different components on the CO oxidation process and the potential reaction mechanism. The results indicated that the introduction of CeO2 successfully enhanced the activity and stability of the catalysts.

Abstract:Nanosheets of coordination polymers (CPs) were synthesized via a facile and one-step complexing-coprecipitation (CC) method. Upon calcination, pure CeO2 and homogeneously La3+- or Cu2+-doped CeO2 products were fabricated by using CPs as precursors. The final products not only retained a stable nano-scale sheet-shaped morphology of their CP precursors, but also possessed high catalytic activity towards CO oxidation. Superior to commercial ceria with negligible catalytic activity, the synthesized CeO2 nanosheets exhibited high activity achieving a CO conversion of 60% at a temperature of 360 degrees C. When doped with Cu2+, remarkable improvement of catalysis is observed owing to the homogeneous incorporation of Cu2+ into the CeO2 lattice. As a catalytically active center, uniformly dispersed CuO also produces more oxygen vacancies and improves oxygen mobility, which results in an enhancement in catalytic activity. The detected temperatures with 50% CO conversion (T-50) for Cu0.1Ce0.9O2-delta and Cu0.04Ce0.96O2-delta are 83 and 95 degrees C, respectively. In contrast, the catalytic test for La3+ doped ceria reveals a decreased activity compared with un-doped ceria. We believe that the Cu2+-doped CeO2 with superior catalytic performance can also be applied to other catalytic systems.

Abstract:Well-dispersed CeO2-CuOx composite hollow spheres have been successfully synthesized through a facile reflux method using carbon spheres as sacrificial templates. The shells of the hollow spheres, similar to 40 nm in thickness, consist of self-assembled 10-15 nm sized nanoparticles. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were employed to study the structural features of the CeO2-CuOx composite hollow spheres. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed that most of the copper element is distributed on the surface of the CeO2 shell support. The CeO2-CuOx composite hollow spheres exhibited enhanced catalytic activity for CO oxidation: complete CO conversion could be obtained at 112 degrees C. The excellent catalytic activity could be ascribed to the hollow structure, high specific surface area and the strong synergistic interaction between CeO2 and CuOx.

Abstract:The Cu-doped CeO2 spheres were synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method. It is confirmed that the spheres composed of many tiny particles are favorable for the gas diffusion in the inner pores. The doping copper is demonstrated to increase the storage and mobility of oxygen vacancy, surface area, and chemisorption sites for CO and enhance the redox capability, which can efficiently convert CO to CO2 at low temperature. The excellent catalytic performance of Cu (10at.%)-doped CeO2 spheres are associated with the porous spherical structure, high redox capability and high oxygen vacancy.

Abstract:Cobalt oxide decorated octahedral ceria hollow structures (CoOx/CeO2) with various contents of CoOx nanoparticles were prepared via a simple chemical impregnation method. The obtained samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), UV-Vis diffuse-reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), surface photovoltage spectroscopy (SPV) and transient photovoltage spectroscopy (TPV). The photocatalytic oxygen evolution via water oxidation was investigated for the as-prepared CoOx/CeO2 nanocage composites. The photocatalytic results indicate that the CoOx/CeO2 nanocage composite with 1 mol% CoOx shows the highest photocatalytic activity. The excellent photocatalytic activity can be attributed to the improved visible-light absorption of CoOx/CeO2 composites and the efficient separation of excited electron-hole pairs between CoOx and CeO2, which can effectively enhance the lifetime of charge carriers in the CoOx-modified samples and then improve the oxygen evolution activity. Cobalt oxide is expected to be an excellent water oxidation co-catalyst for semiconductor photocatalysts.

Abstract:The fabrication of multi-component hybrid nanostructures is of vital importance because their two-phase interface could provide a rich environment for redox reactions, which are beneficial for enhancing catalytic performance. Inspired by the above consideration, strongly coupled Cu 2 O@CeO 2 core@shell nanostructures have been successfully prepared via a non-organic and clean aqueous route without using any organic additive. In this process, an auto-catalytic redox reaction occurred on the two-phase interface, followed by a triggered self-assembly process. Additionally, the size, morphology and composition of the as-obtained nanostructures can be tuned well by varying the reaction temperature, as well as the species and the amount of Cu precursors. The catalytic tests for peroxidase-like activity and CO oxidation have been conducted in detail, and the results confirm a strong synergistic effect at the interface sites between the CeO 2 and Cu 2 O components.
Surfactant-Mediated One-Pot Method to Prepare Pd–CeO2 Colloidal Assembled Spheres and Their Enhanced Catalytic Performance for CO Oxidation

Abstract:A simple, one-pot method to fabricate ordered, monodispersed Pd-CeO2 colloidal assembled spheres (CASs) was developed using the surfactant-mediated solvothermal approach, which involves a tunable self-assembled process by carefully controlling different chemical reactions. The evolution process and formation mechanism of the CASs were thoroughly investigated by time-controlled and component-controlled experiments. For CO oxidation, this CAS nanocatalyst exhibited much higher catalytic activity and thermal stability than Pd/CeO2 prepared by an impregnation method, and its complete CO conversion temperature is ∼120 °C. The enhanced catalytic performance for CO oxidation could be attributed to the synergistic effect of highly dispersed PdO species and Pd2+ ions incorporated into the CeO2 lattice. For this CAS catalyst, each sphere can be viewed as a single reactor, and its catalytic performance can be further improved after being supported on alumina, which is obviously higher than results previously reported. Furthermore, this method was used to successfully prepare M-CeO2 CASs (M = Pt, Cu, Mn, Co), showing further that this is a new and ideal approach for fabricating active and stable ceria-based materials.

Abstract:In this paper, we report a self-assembly method to synthesize high-quality ZnCo2O4@CeO2 core@shell microspheres with tunable CeO2 thickness. ZnCo2O4 spheres were first synthesized as the core, followed by a controlled CeO2 shell coating process. The thickness of CeO2 shell could be easily tuned by varying the feeding molar ratio of Ce/Co. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) images and scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) image have identified the core@shell structure of these samples. In CO oxidation tests these ZnCo2O4@CeO2 core@shell microspheres exhibited promising catalytic performance, and the catalytic activity of the best sample is even close to the traditional noble metal-CeO2 system, attaining 100% CO conversion at a relatively low temperature of 200 °C. Cycling tests confirm their good stability of these core@shell microspheres besides activity. Their high catalytic performance should be attributed to the core@shell structure formation, and moreover further H2-temperature-programmed reduction (TPR) results revealed the possible synergistic effects between the two components of ZnCo2O4 and CeO2.

Abstract:Co3O4/CeO2 multi-shelled nanospheres with various Ce/Co ratios for low temperature CO oxidation were fabricated by using a bimetallic coordination polymer as a self-sacrificial template. The obtained Co0.9Ce0.1O2-delta catalyst exhibited superior CO oxidation performance, which reached 100% conversion at 80 degrees C. After five-cycle tests, the conversion could also be maintained at approximately 100% with almost no activity loss. Furthermore, the effects of the CeO2 component on catalytic performance have been investigated by various advanced physicochemical characterization methods. This indicated that the addition of cerium can significantly increase the surface area, so as to enrich the oxygen vacancies and provide a higher degree of accessible active sites. This work proposed an alternative approach to construct multi-shelled nanosphere composites.

Abstract:Double-shelled CeO2 hollow microspheres (4-5 mu m) were synthesized through a facile one-step hydrothermal treatment of Ce(NO3)(3)center dot 6H(2)O in the presence of citric acid and hexamethylenetetramine (HMTA), and scanning and transmission electron microscopies demonstrated the samples are hollow spheres with litchi-like surfaces. The assembly of the hollow spheres was contributed to coordination effect of additives employed in the reaction system and the ripening growth in the process. Meanwhile, two other spherical structures including polyhedron-constituted and porous microspheres assembled with nanocrystals were also synthesized by varying the experimental parameters in the synthetic route. The UV-vis spectroscopic investigation demonstrated that the absorption edge of the three samples was blue shifted accordingly with their constituted primary crystallite sizes. In addition, investigation showed that the catalytic activities for CO oxidation of the three spheres types were considerably higher than those of commercial CeO2 powders, and their activities were in the order of porous > litchi-like double-shelled hollow > polyhedron-constituted, consistent with their BET surface area of 33, 22, and 10 m(2) g(-1). Specially, the litchi-like double-shelled hollow spheres showed much better catalytic properties per unit weight catalyst.

Abstract:Exploring high-performance catalysts has always been a general concern for promoting extended heterocatalysis reactions. Here, Pt embedded highly-porous CeO2 hollow sphere (Pt/CeO2 HS) composites are developed by a one-pot template-free solvothermal method. Evolution mechanism studies unravel that the Pt/CeO2 HS composites are derived from a self-assembly-reduction-Ostwald ripening process, where Pt nanoparticles (Pt NPs) are embedded into ceria mesoporous hollow spheres. The as-developed embedment strategy is more facile, sustainable and cost-effective than conventional deposition approaches, ensuring the precise control of the location, distribution, and uniformity of Pt NPs throughout the outer shell of hollow spherical CeO2. Importantly, the Pt NP embedding process could be determined to play a key role in creating oxygen vacancies and activating surface chemisorbed oxygen. Besides that, the aggregation of Pt NPs can be efficiently inhibited in the Pt/CeO2 HS composites, and more active sites should be involved in catalytic reactions. All these advantages contribute to the strikingly improved performance as well as excellent stability of the Pt/CeO2 HS composites toward CO oxidation reaction compared with mesoporous CeO2 nanospheres (CeO2 NS) and Pt/CeO2 NS reference catalysts. These findings present a decent protocol for desgining noble metal/oxide hollow structural composites in heterogeneous catalysis.

Abstract:Ceria (CeO2) with abundant oxygen defects, surface alkalinity, low cost effectiveness and admirable redox ability could be used in the photoreduction of CO2. However, little attention has been paid to the interaction of reactant CO2 molecules on CeO2-based photocatalysts. In this work, Cu2O nanoparticles were applied to the modification of the properties of Lewis acid/base, surface oxygen defect content and visible light adsorption of CeO2, and the adsorption/activation abilities of CO2 reactant on Cu2O/CeO2 and CeO2 photocatalysts were investigated in comparison. The photocatalytic performance showed that Cu2O/CeO2 had better activity than CeO2. And the loading of Cu2O resulted in more oxygen defects and Ce3+ species, which was helpful for available visible light adsorption and higher charge-separation efficiency. Furthermore, CO2-TPD, CO2-adsorption DRIFTS and in-situ ESR results demonstrated that the synergistic effects of Cu2O/CeO2 were beneficial for more generated carboxylate and (CO2-)-C-center dot radicals, instead of carbonate species which promoted CO2 reduction to CO.

Abstract:Composite CuxCe1-xO2 nanorod catalysts with abundant Cu-Ce interface for CO preferential oxidation are synthesized via a one-pot co-precipitation method at ambient temperature, and then copper species are induced to migrate and enrich on the surface and subsurface of CuxCe1-xO2 by thermal treatment. The best low temperature catalytic activity (T-50% = 77 degrees C) and widest operation window (95-150 degrees C) are achieved by thermal treatment at 700 degrees C. With the thermal treatment temperature increasing from 200 to 700 degrees C, first Cu-Ce solid solution forms (at 400 degrees C), then Cu species migrate to the surface and subsurface of CuxCe1-xO2 nanorods, forming a lattice relaxation layer containing abundant highly dispersed CuOx species and strongly bonded Cu-[O-x]-Ce species, whose thickness is gradually reduced but the tightness is increased, thus strengthening the Cu-Ce interaction. The amount changing and redox process of the active copper entities respectively involving low and high temperature CO-PROX reaction are in-depth clarified.

Abstract:A clean nonorganic synthetic method has been developed to fabricate the uniform pomegranate-like Pt@CeO2 multicore@shell nanospheres in a large scale. Under the effective protection of Ar atmosphere the redox reaction just simply happened between Ce(NO3)3 and K2PtCl4 in an alkaline aqueous solution, in which no other reducing agents or surfactants were added. The as-obtained nanospheres exhibited excellent structure stability even being calcined at 600 °C for 5 h. Moreover, the as-obtained Pt@CeO2 multicore@shell nanospheres can be further supported on reduced graphene oxide (RGO) to form heterogeneous nanocatalyst, which has been successfully applied in the chemical reduction reaction of nitrophenol (NP) by ammonia borane (NH3BH3, dubbed as AB) instead of hazardous H2 or NaBH4.

Abstract:Practical applications of Pd-based catalysts are severely limited by sintering. A discontinuous shattered nanotube composed of ceria nanoparticles was employed as the shell in this work, and Pd@CeO2 core-shell nanotube catalysts were prepared using multiwalled carbon nanotubes as sacrificial templates, in which the noble metal was preserved at high dispersion, even after being treated at high temperature due to physical confinement and interaction confinement. The quantitative ratio of exposed Pd atoms to interacted Pd atoms could be readily manipulated by fabricating CeO2 shells with varied degrees of thickness and sparseness. The characterization and catalytic evaluation taken together reflected the roles of exposed Pd atoms which offered sites for CO adsorption and reaction, and interacted Pd atoms which activated the interfacial lattice oxygen and multiplied the adsorption oxygen. The enhanced catalytic performance would appear under an optimal distribution of Pd species after deliberate manipulation.
