Abstract:Exploring high-performance catalysts has always been a general concern for promoting extended heterocatalysis reactions. Here, Pt embedded highly-porous CeO2 hollow sphere (Pt/CeO2 HS) composites are developed by a one-pot template-free solvothermal method. Evolution mechanism studies unravel that the Pt/CeO2 HS composites are derived from a self-assembly-reduction-Ostwald ripening process, where Pt nanoparticles (Pt NPs) are embedded into ceria mesoporous hollow spheres. The as-developed embedment strategy is more facile, sustainable and cost-effective than conventional deposition approaches, ensuring the precise control of the location, distribution, and uniformity of Pt NPs throughout the outer shell of hollow spherical CeO2. Importantly, the Pt NP embedding process could be determined to play a key role in creating oxygen vacancies and activating surface chemisorbed oxygen. Besides that, the aggregation of Pt NPs can be efficiently inhibited in the Pt/CeO2 HS composites, and more active sites should be involved in catalytic reactions. All these advantages contribute to the strikingly improved performance as well as excellent stability of the Pt/CeO2 HS composites toward CO oxidation reaction compared with mesoporous CeO2 nanospheres (CeO2 NS) and Pt/CeO2 NS reference catalysts. These findings present a decent protocol for desgining noble metal/oxide hollow structural composites in heterogeneous catalysis.
Facile synthesis of well-dispersed CeO2–CuOx composite hollow spheres with superior catalytic activity for CO oxidation

Abstract:Well-dispersed CeO2-CuOx composite hollow spheres have been successfully synthesized through a facile reflux method using carbon spheres as sacrificial templates. The shells of the hollow spheres, similar to 40 nm in thickness, consist of self-assembled 10-15 nm sized nanoparticles. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were employed to study the structural features of the CeO2-CuOx composite hollow spheres. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed that most of the copper element is distributed on the surface of the CeO2 shell support. The CeO2-CuOx composite hollow spheres exhibited enhanced catalytic activity for CO oxidation: complete CO conversion could be obtained at 112 degrees C. The excellent catalytic activity could be ascribed to the hollow structure, high specific surface area and the strong synergistic interaction between CeO2 and CuOx.

Abstract:In this paper, we report a self-assembly method to synthesize high-quality ZnCo2O4@CeO2 core@shell microspheres with tunable CeO2 thickness. ZnCo2O4 spheres were first synthesized as the core, followed by a controlled CeO2 shell coating process. The thickness of CeO2 shell could be easily tuned by varying the feeding molar ratio of Ce/Co. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) images and scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) image have identified the core@shell structure of these samples. In CO oxidation tests these ZnCo2O4@CeO2 core@shell microspheres exhibited promising catalytic performance, and the catalytic activity of the best sample is even close to the traditional noble metal-CeO2 system, attaining 100% CO conversion at a relatively low temperature of 200 °C. Cycling tests confirm their good stability of these core@shell microspheres besides activity. Their high catalytic performance should be attributed to the core@shell structure formation, and moreover further H2-temperature-programmed reduction (TPR) results revealed the possible synergistic effects between the two components of ZnCo2O4 and CeO2.

Abstract:Exploring the state-of-the-art heterogeneous catalysts has been a general concern for sustainable and clean energy. Here, Pt-embedded CuO x-CeO2 multicore-shell (Pt/CuO x-CeO2 MS) composites are fabricated at room temperature via a one-pot and template-free procedure for catalyzing CO oxidation, a classical probe reaction, showing a volcano-shaped relationship between the composition and catalytic activity. We experimentally unravel that the Pt/CuO x-CeO2 MS composites are derived from an interfacial autoredox process, where Pt nanoparticles (NPs) are in situ encapsulated by self-assembled ceria nanospheres with CuO x clusters adhered through deposition/precipitation-calcination process. Only Cu-O and Pt-Pt coordination structures are determined for CuO x clusters and Pt NPs in Pt/CuO x-CeO2 MS, respectively. Importantly, the close vicinity between Pt and CeO2 benefits to more oxygen vacancies in CeO2 counterparts and results in thin oxide layers on Pt NPs. Meanwhile, the introduction of CuO x clusters is crucial for triggering synergistic catalysis, which leads to high resistance to aggregation of Pt NPs and improvement of catalytic performance. In CO oxidation reaction, both Ptδ+-CO and Cu+-CO can act as active sites during CO adsorption and activation. Nonetheless, redundant content of Pt or Cu will induce a strongly bound Pt-O-Ce or Cu-[O x]-Ce structures in air-calcinated Pt/CuO x-CeO2 MS composites, respectively, which are both deleterious to catalytic reactivity. As a result, the composition-dependent catalytic activity and superior durability of Pt/CuO x-CeO2 MS composites toward CO oxidation reaction are achieved. This work should be instructive for fabricating desirable multicomponent catalysts composed of noble metal and bimetallic oxide composites for diverse heterogeneous catalysis.

Abstract:Co3O4/CeO2 multi-shelled nanospheres with various Ce/Co ratios for low temperature CO oxidation were fabricated by using a bimetallic coordination polymer as a self-sacrificial template. The obtained Co0.9Ce0.1O2-delta catalyst exhibited superior CO oxidation performance, which reached 100% conversion at 80 degrees C. After five-cycle tests, the conversion could also be maintained at approximately 100% with almost no activity loss. Furthermore, the effects of the CeO2 component on catalytic performance have been investigated by various advanced physicochemical characterization methods. This indicated that the addition of cerium can significantly increase the surface area, so as to enrich the oxygen vacancies and provide a higher degree of accessible active sites. This work proposed an alternative approach to construct multi-shelled nanosphere composites.

Abstract:The Cu-doped CeO2 spheres were synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method. It is confirmed that the spheres composed of many tiny particles are favorable for the gas diffusion in the inner pores. The doping copper is demonstrated to increase the storage and mobility of oxygen vacancy, surface area, and chemisorption sites for CO and enhance the redox capability, which can efficiently convert CO to CO2 at low temperature. The excellent catalytic performance of Cu (10at.%)-doped CeO2 spheres are associated with the porous spherical structure, high redox capability and high oxygen vacancy.

Abstract:Au/CeO2 hollow nanospheres were successfully synthesized by template method. Carbon spheres (CSs) were employed as the sacrificial templates, which were fabricated by hydrothermal method, and the shell of CeO2 precursor was formed on the surface of CSs through layer-by-layer self-assembled approach. Then, Au nanoparticles were deposited on the shell. Finally, the templates were removed by calcination and Au/CeO2 hollow spheres with hierarchically porous structure were obtained. The samples were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, TG-DSC, and BET analysis. The diameters and thickness of the nanospheres were about 250nm and 20nm, respectively. Samples with different loading amounts of Au were prepared and noted as L-Au/CeO2, M-Au/CeO2, and H-Au/CeO2, corresponding to the Au weight percentages of 1.8%, 4.2%, and 9.3%. The specific surface area of L-Au/CeO2 could reach 87.1m(2)/g, higher than that of M-Au/CeO2 (77.8m(2)/g), while M-Au/CeO2 showed the best catalytic activity that CO could be completely converted to CO2 at 81 degrees C. The CeO2, L-Au/CeO2, and M-Au/CeO2 hollow nanospheres showed excellent catalytic stability. Moreover, this method can be easily extended to the synthesis of other metal oxide hollow nanospheres compounded with Au nanoparticles.
Facile One-Step Synthesis of Double-Shelled CeO2 Hollow Spheres and Their Optical and Catalytic Properties

Abstract:Double-shelled CeO2 hollow microspheres (4-5 mu m) were synthesized through a facile one-step hydrothermal treatment of Ce(NO3)(3)center dot 6H(2)O in the presence of citric acid and hexamethylenetetramine (HMTA), and scanning and transmission electron microscopies demonstrated the samples are hollow spheres with litchi-like surfaces. The assembly of the hollow spheres was contributed to coordination effect of additives employed in the reaction system and the ripening growth in the process. Meanwhile, two other spherical structures including polyhedron-constituted and porous microspheres assembled with nanocrystals were also synthesized by varying the experimental parameters in the synthetic route. The UV-vis spectroscopic investigation demonstrated that the absorption edge of the three samples was blue shifted accordingly with their constituted primary crystallite sizes. In addition, investigation showed that the catalytic activities for CO oxidation of the three spheres types were considerably higher than those of commercial CeO2 powders, and their activities were in the order of porous > litchi-like double-shelled hollow > polyhedron-constituted, consistent with their BET surface area of 33, 22, and 10 m(2) g(-1). Specially, the litchi-like double-shelled hollow spheres showed much better catalytic properties per unit weight catalyst.

Abstract:Herein, hollow multishelled structure (HoMS) of Co3O4–CeO2−x nanocomposites with controllable molar ratio of Co and Ce elements is synthesized by a general strategy sequential templating approach (STA) with a facile and efficient electrostatic spray process. As a catalyst of carbon monoxide (CO) catalytic oxidation, Co3O4–CeO2−x (Co/Ce = 4/1) HoMS achieves good catalytic activity (complete conversion temperature is 166.9 °C) and stability (100 h). This performance is attributed to synergistic effects between the two components. The combination of Co3O4 and CeO2 not only generates more interfaces of Co3O4–CeO2−x, which is more favorable for the activation of oxygen, but also improves the oxidizability of Co3O4 as well as the capacity of oxygen storage of CeO2. In addition, the relatively larger effective specific surface area of the HoMS can provide more active sites, while the unique structure of HoMS can facilitate gas diffusion and maintain structural stability.
The Rational Design of Sandwich-Like MnO2-Pd-CeO2 Hollow Spheres with Enhanced Activity and Stability for CO Oxidation

Abstract:The development of strategies for the facile fabrication of noble metal/metal oxide nanomaterials with high catalytic activity and thermal stability is very challenging in the field of catalysis and for other relevant applications. Herein, we report a delicate multi-assembly method to prepare sandwich-like MnO2 Pd CeO2 hollow spheres wherein carbon spheres were employed as sacrificial templates. Typically, tiny Pd nanoparticles were deposited on the outer surface of the MnO2 shell, and the CeO2 overcoating served as a nanotrap to anchor the Pd particles on the MnO2 supports. The unique sandwich-like structure effectively prevents the Pd nanoparticles from aggregation during high-temperature calcination and catalyzation. The as-prepared MnO2-Pd-CeO2 hollow spheres exhibited enhanced stability and activity for CO oxidation. The excellent stability and activity exhibited by the as-synthesized MnO2-Pd-CeO2 hollow spheres can be ascribed to the sandwich-like structure and the strong synergistic effects between Pd and the hierarchical porous MnO2-CeO2 shell. We believe that this optimal structure design demonstrates a new approach for the synthesis of noble-metal-based catalysts with superior activity and stability.

Abstract:AbstractMastery of nanomaterial structure enables the control of its properties to enhance its performance for a given application. Herein, we demonstrate a fast and facile self‐assembly method for the synthesis of a series of Co3O4@CeO2 core@shell cubes, which are characterized by SEM, TEM, XRD, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP‐MS), and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses. The results indicate that the thickness of the CeO2 shell can be tuned through simple variation of the feeding molar ratio of Ce/Co. These Co3O4@CeO2 core@shell cubes are used for catalytic CO oxidation and show good catalytic properties. Moreover, the relationship between the catalytic performance and the CeO2 shell thickness is studied in depth to optimize the catalytic properties.

Abstract:We have developed a series of Co-Cu bimetallic oxide nanocatalysts using an environmentally friendly water phase synthesis method, demonstrating significant potential in catalyzing the CO oxidation reaction. The 0.3Co3O4/0.7CuO nano-hybrid, with a feed ratio of 3:7 for Cobalt(II) chloride hexahydrate to Copper(II) chloride dihydrate, exhibited a CO catalytic oxidation T 90 approximately 70 degrees C lower than that of a single transition metal oxide material. Building on this, we enhanced the catalysts by incorporating CeO2 nanoparticles to produce Co3O4/CuO/CeO2 oxide nanocatalysts. By varying the amount of CeO2 nanoparticles added to the 0.3Co3O4/ 0.7CuO catalyst, we achieved further improvement in the CO oxidation performance. Specifically, the T 90 of the CO catalytic oxidation reaction for the 0.3Co3O4/0.7CuO/0.7CeO2 material was approximately 30 degrees C lower than that of 0.3Co3O40.7CuO. Various characterization methods, such as XRD, EDX, and in situ FT-IR, were employed to investigate the impact of different components on the CO oxidation process and the potential reaction mechanism. The results indicated that the introduction of CeO2 successfully enhanced the activity and stability of the catalysts.

Abstract:Herein, we designed an extremely facile method to prepare well-defined MnO2@CeO2-MnO2 ball-in-ball binary oxide hollow spheres by employing carbon spheres (CSs) as sacrificial templates. The synthesis process involves a novel self-assembled approach to prepare core-shell CSs@CeO2 precursor which would directly react with KMnO4 aqueous solution to form yolk-shell CSs@MnO2/CeO2-MnO2 precursor in the following step. Well-dispersed Ce-Mn binary oxide with double-shelled hollow sphere structure could be achieved after annealing the precursor in air. The evolution process and formation mechanism of this novel structure were thoroughly studied in this paper. Especially, the as-prepared double-shell MnO2/CeO2-MnO2 hollow spheres exhibited enhanced catalytic activity for CO oxidation compared with the pure MnO2 hollow spheres and pure CeO2 hollow spheres. We believe the high surface area, hierarchical porous structures and strong synergistic interaction between CeO2 and MnO2 contribute to the excellent catalytic activity. Most importantly, this method could be extended to prepare other transition metal oxides. As an example, triple-shelled Co-Mn composite hollow spheres assembled by ultrathin nanoplates were successfully prepared.

Abstract:Derivation of CuO/CeO2 catalyst from metal-organic framework (MOF) precursor is able to facilitate the dispersion of active sites, resulting in an enhanced catalytic performance for preferential CO oxidation in H2-rich stream (CO-PROX). However, parts of the Cu-O-Ce active interfaces are usually sintered inside the catalyst, which will reduce the catalytic performance. To solve such problem and fully expose the catalytic active sites, herein, we design and synthesize a hollow spherical CeO2 supporting Cu3(BTC)2 precursor shell and then pyrolyze it to generate CuO/CeO2-S catalyst. The results demonstrated by the various characterizations such as PXRD, TEM, H2-TPR, O2-TPD, Raman and XPS are as follows: The quantitative Cu active species are achieved by controlling the loading layer of MOFs; The hollow structure can avoid the active Cu-O-Ce interface being coated inside; The CeO2-S provides the lowest loading energy of Cu and more oxygen vacancy. Further in-situ analysis of Raman and DRIFTs as well as kinetic detects exhibit the highest interfacial active Cu species ratio and Ce3+ concentration of the CuO/CeO2-S, comparing to catalysts with diverse morphologies and traditional impregnation method from MOF precursors. The as-synthesized CuO/CeO2-S-10-700 displays nearly 100% CO conversion at ca. 80 °C and outstanding stability for CO-PROX.

Abstract:Uniform-sized and monodisperse CeO2 mesoporous hollow nanospheres composed of ceria nanocrystals were synthesized via a template-free and surfactant-assisted benign hydrothermal route. On the basis of a time-dependent experiment, the precipitation–dissolution–renucleation–assembly and Ostwald ripening processes mechanism is proposed for the formation of the CeO2 mesoporous hollow spheres. Poly(vinyl-pyrrolidone) (PVP) was applied as a surfactant to facilitate the reassembly of the CeO2 nanoparticles and the formation of the mesoporous shell of the hollow nanospheres. By increasing the amount of PVP, the mesoporous shell of the hollow spheres could be fabricated and became more apparent. Meanwhile, altering the amounts of H2O2 could control the size of the primary nanocrystals via affecting the nucleation/growth process of them, which is another key factor in the formation of the hollow structure and the uniform, monodispersed nanoparticles. The catalytic test results show that the as-obtained CeO2 mesoporous hollow spheres exhibited desirable CO catalytic properties. The synthesized Au–CeO2 nanospheres demonstrate a higher catalytic activity in CO oxidation than pure ceria nanospheres.

Abstract:Pd@Zr/Ce O2 core-shell catalyst prepared by hydrothermal method was applied in CO oxidation reaction, exhibiting high CO oxidation activity at low temperature.XRD(X-ray diffraction) analysis demonstrated that the remarkable enhancement of catalytic performance was found to depend on the presence of more oxygen vacancies in the core-shell structure, which contributed higher content of and ready release of active oxygen species at low temperature, confirmed by H2-TPR(temperature programed reduction) results.Interestingly, introducing a small amount of zirconium(0.5 wt.%) exhibited a significant improvement of catalytic activity because the introduction of Zr further improved the amount of crystal defects and promoted the migration of oxygen species.

Abstract:A facile one-step strategy has been developed for preparing monodisperse CeO(2) mesoporous spheres with high surface areas, uniform size distributions, and well-defined pore topologies. These mesoporous spheres have been demonstrated to be catalytically stable and active for CO oxidation.

Abstract:Silica hollow spheres were synthesized by sol–gel process using carbon microspheres as templates, and used as supports for CuO/SiO2 catalysts. The samples were characterized by TEM, nitrogen adsorption–desorption, XRD and TPR, and furthermore, the catalytic performance for CO oxidation was approached. The results indicated that the catalytic activity of CuO supported on SiO2 hollow spheres exhibited much higher as compared to that supported on commercial SiO2. Enhancement of the catalytic activity may be attributed to the fact that the unique hollow spherical texture should facilitate the formation of main active species and gas diffusion in catalysts.
