Abstract:Nanosheets of coordination polymers (CPs) were synthesized via a facile and one-step complexing-coprecipitation (CC) method. Upon calcination, pure CeO2 and homogeneously La3+- or Cu2+-doped CeO2 products were fabricated by using CPs as precursors. The final products not only retained a stable nano-scale sheet-shaped morphology of their CP precursors, but also possessed high catalytic activity towards CO oxidation. Superior to commercial ceria with negligible catalytic activity, the synthesized CeO2 nanosheets exhibited high activity achieving a CO conversion of 60% at a temperature of 360 degrees C. When doped with Cu2+, remarkable improvement of catalysis is observed owing to the homogeneous incorporation of Cu2+ into the CeO2 lattice. As a catalytically active center, uniformly dispersed CuO also produces more oxygen vacancies and improves oxygen mobility, which results in an enhancement in catalytic activity. The detected temperatures with 50% CO conversion (T-50) for Cu0.1Ce0.9O2-delta and Cu0.04Ce0.96O2-delta are 83 and 95 degrees C, respectively. In contrast, the catalytic test for La3+ doped ceria reveals a decreased activity compared with un-doped ceria. We believe that the Cu2+-doped CeO2 with superior catalytic performance can also be applied to other catalytic systems.

Facile synthesis of well-dispersed CeO2–CuOx composite hollow spheres with superior catalytic activity for CO oxidation

Abstract:Well-dispersed CeO2-CuOx composite hollow spheres have been successfully synthesized through a facile reflux method using carbon spheres as sacrificial templates. The shells of the hollow spheres, similar to 40 nm in thickness, consist of self-assembled 10-15 nm sized nanoparticles. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were employed to study the structural features of the CeO2-CuOx composite hollow spheres. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed that most of the copper element is distributed on the surface of the CeO2 shell support. The CeO2-CuOx composite hollow spheres exhibited enhanced catalytic activity for CO oxidation: complete CO conversion could be obtained at 112 degrees C. The excellent catalytic activity could be ascribed to the hollow structure, high specific surface area and the strong synergistic interaction between CeO2 and CuOx.

Sustainable and Facile Route to Nearly Monodisperse Spherical Aggregates of CeO2 Nanocrystals with Ionic Liquids and Their Catalytic Activities for CO Oxidation

Abstract:This article reports a novel preparation of nearly monodisperse spherical aggregates of CeO2 nanocrystals by using ionic liquid (1-hexadecyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide, C(16)MimBr) as both template and solvent. The products were characterized with X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution TEM (HRTEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy, FT-IR spectroscopy, and N-2 adsorption-desorption methods. The spherical aggregates, with average diameter of 100 - 150 nm, are composed of ca. 3.5 nm CeO2 nanocrystals as building units, giving rise to three-dimensional (313) open porous structures with high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area of 119 m(2).g(-1). Mesoporous CeO2 with surface area up to 227 m(2).g(-1) was prepared by simply tuning the amount of the ionic liquids. Loaded with 5 wt% CuO, both the spherical aggregates and the mesoporous CeO2 exhibit high catalytic activities for CO conversion with 100% conversion rates at low temperature of 150 degrees C, suggesting potential applications in preferential oxidation (PROX) and water-gas shift reaction (WGSR). This sustainable and facile method may be extended to the preparation of other metal oxide nanoarchitectures and provides guidance for structure-controlled synthesis.

Abstract:The fabrication of multi-component hybrid nanostructures is of vital importance because their two-phase interface could provide a rich environment for redox reactions, which are beneficial for enhancing catalytic performance. Inspired by the above consideration, strongly coupled Cu 2 O@CeO 2 core@shell nanostructures have been successfully prepared via a non-organic and clean aqueous route without using any organic additive. In this process, an auto-catalytic redox reaction occurred on the two-phase interface, followed by a triggered self-assembly process. Additionally, the size, morphology and composition of the as-obtained nanostructures can be tuned well by varying the reaction temperature, as well as the species and the amount of Cu precursors. The catalytic tests for peroxidase-like activity and CO oxidation have been conducted in detail, and the results confirm a strong synergistic effect at the interface sites between the CeO 2 and Cu 2 O components.
Facile Synthesis of Co and Ce Dual-Doped Ni3S2 Nanosheets on Ni Foam for Enhanced Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:Developing efficient and stable oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts via doping strategy has well-documented for electrochemical water splitting. Herein, a homogeneous structure (denoted as Co/Ce-Ni3S2/NF) composed of Co and Ce dual doped Ni3S2 nanosheets on nickel foam was synthesized by a facile one-step hydrothermal method. Co and Ce dopants are distributed inside the host sulfide, thereby raising the active sites and the electrical conductivity. Besides, the CeOx nanoparticles generated by part of the Ce dopants as a cocatalyst further improve the catalytic activity by adding defective sites and enhancing the electron transfer. As a consequence, the obtained Co/Ce-Ni3S2/NF electrode exhibits better electrocatalytic activity than single Co or Ce doped Ni3S2 and pure Ni3S2, with low overpotential (286 mV) at 20 mA-cm−2, a small Tafel slope and excellent long-term durability in strong alkaline solution. These results presented here not only offer a novel platform for designing transition metal and lanthanide dual-doped catalysts, but also supply some guidelines for constructing catalysts in other catalytic applications.

Abstract:Copper, renowned for its intrinsic C-C coupling ability, emerges as a promising electrocatalyst for converting CO2 into value-added C2+ products. However, improving selectivity and stability remains a critical hurdle. This study presents a novel strategy: integrating CeO2 nanoparticles onto CuO nanosheets (CuO NSs). This synergistic approach effectively stabilizes the mixed oxidation state of Cu (Cu+ and Cu0) during the reaction, as confirmed in situ X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (XAFs). In situ attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) reveals that CeO2 promotes the formation of the crucial *COH intermediate, facilitating C-C coupling. The optimized catalyst demonstrates exceptional performance, achieving a Faraday efficiency of 64.1% for C2H4 production at 600 mA/cm2. This research underscores the potential of surface engineering to enhance the stability and activity of Cu-based catalysts for CO2 electroreduction.

Abstract:We have developed a series of Co-Cu bimetallic oxide nanocatalysts using an environmentally friendly water phase synthesis method, demonstrating significant potential in catalyzing the CO oxidation reaction. The 0.3Co3O4/0.7CuO nano-hybrid, with a feed ratio of 3:7 for Cobalt(II) chloride hexahydrate to Copper(II) chloride dihydrate, exhibited a CO catalytic oxidation T 90 approximately 70 degrees C lower than that of a single transition metal oxide material. Building on this, we enhanced the catalysts by incorporating CeO2 nanoparticles to produce Co3O4/CuO/CeO2 oxide nanocatalysts. By varying the amount of CeO2 nanoparticles added to the 0.3Co3O4/ 0.7CuO catalyst, we achieved further improvement in the CO oxidation performance. Specifically, the T 90 of the CO catalytic oxidation reaction for the 0.3Co3O4/0.7CuO/0.7CeO2 material was approximately 30 degrees C lower than that of 0.3Co3O40.7CuO. Various characterization methods, such as XRD, EDX, and in situ FT-IR, were employed to investigate the impact of different components on the CO oxidation process and the potential reaction mechanism. The results indicated that the introduction of CeO2 successfully enhanced the activity and stability of the catalysts.
Tailoring electron transfer with Ce integration in ultrathin Co(OH)2 nanosheets by fast microwave for oxygen evolution reaction

Abstract:The intrinsic activity of Co(OH)2 for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) may be elaborately improved through the suitable valence adjustment. Ce modification at electronic level is proved to be an efficient strategy owing to the flexible transformation of Ce3+/Ce4+. Herein, Ce0.21@Co(OH)2 with the optimized Ce doping have been fabricated to tailor the fast electron transfer for the enhanced activity and stability for OER. Firstly, the obtained core–shell structure composed of vertical loose Co(OH)2 sheets not only exposes a large number of active sites, but also provides channels for Ce doping. Secondly, the high pressure microwave with instantaneous heating can fast introduce Ce into Co(OH)2, obtaining Cex@Co(OH)2 with well dispersion and close integration. The intimated interaction between Ce and Co species may provide the "d–f electronic ladders" for accelerating electron transfer of the catalytic surface. Meanwhile, Ce promotes the formation of Co-superoxide intermediate and/or the release of oxygen, which is considered to be the rate-determining step for OER. The electrochemical measurements confirmed the low overpotential of 300 mV at 10 mA cm−2 and great stability of Ce0.21@Co(OH)2 for OER. This work demonstrates a meaningful approach to realize the tuned electronic structure through metal doping.

Abstract:Practical applications of Pd-based catalysts are severely limited by sintering. A discontinuous shattered nanotube composed of ceria nanoparticles was employed as the shell in this work, and Pd@CeO2 core-shell nanotube catalysts were prepared using multiwalled carbon nanotubes as sacrificial templates, in which the noble metal was preserved at high dispersion, even after being treated at high temperature due to physical confinement and interaction confinement. The quantitative ratio of exposed Pd atoms to interacted Pd atoms could be readily manipulated by fabricating CeO2 shells with varied degrees of thickness and sparseness. The characterization and catalytic evaluation taken together reflected the roles of exposed Pd atoms which offered sites for CO adsorption and reaction, and interacted Pd atoms which activated the interfacial lattice oxygen and multiplied the adsorption oxygen. The enhanced catalytic performance would appear under an optimal distribution of Pd species after deliberate manipulation.
New Design and Construction of Abundant Active Surface Interfacial Copper Entities in CuxCe1–xO2 Nanorod Catalysts for CO-PROX

Abstract:Composite CuxCe1-xO2 nanorod catalysts with abundant Cu-Ce interface for CO preferential oxidation are synthesized via a one-pot co-precipitation method at ambient temperature, and then copper species are induced to migrate and enrich on the surface and subsurface of CuxCe1-xO2 by thermal treatment. The best low temperature catalytic activity (T-50% = 77 degrees C) and widest operation window (95-150 degrees C) are achieved by thermal treatment at 700 degrees C. With the thermal treatment temperature increasing from 200 to 700 degrees C, first Cu-Ce solid solution forms (at 400 degrees C), then Cu species migrate to the surface and subsurface of CuxCe1-xO2 nanorods, forming a lattice relaxation layer containing abundant highly dispersed CuOx species and strongly bonded Cu-[O-x]-Ce species, whose thickness is gradually reduced but the tightness is increased, thus strengthening the Cu-Ce interaction. The amount changing and redox process of the active copper entities respectively involving low and high temperature CO-PROX reaction are in-depth clarified.
Dopant-Induced Modification of Active Site Structure and Surface Bonding Mode for High-Performance Nanocatalysts: Co Oxidation on Capping-Free (110)-Oriented Ceo2:Ln (ln = La-Lu) Nanowires

Abstract:Active center engineering at atomic level is a grand challenge for catalyst design and optimization in many industrial catalytic processes. Exploring new strategies to delicately tailor the structures of active centers and bonding modes of surface reactive intermediates for nanocatalysts is crucial to high-efficiency nanocatalysis that bridges heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysis. Here we demonstrate a robust approach to tune the CO oxidation activity over CeO2 nanowires (NWs) through the modulation of the local structure and surface state around Ln(Ce)' defect centers by doping other lanthanides (Ln), based on the continuous variation ;of the ionic radius of lanthanide dopants caused by the lanthanide contraction. Homogeneously doped (110)-oriented CeO2:Ln NWs with no residual capping agents were synthesized by controlling the redox chemistry of Ce(III)/Ce(IV) in a mild hydrothermal process. The CO oxidation reactivity over CeO2:Ln NWs was dependent on the Ln dopants, and the reactivity reached the maximum in turnover rates over Nd-doped samples. On the basis of the results obtained from combined experimentations and density functional theory simulations, the decisive factors of the modulation effect along the lanthanide dopant series were deduced as surface oxygen release capability and the bonding configuration of the surface adsorbed species (i.e., carbonates and bicarbonates) formed during catalytic process, which resulted in the existence of an optimal doping effect from the lanthanide with moderate ionic radius.

Abstract:Two-dimensional transition metal (2D TM)-based oxyhydroxides are widely used for electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) due to their high activity and low price. However, the limited active sites and insuf-ficient intrinsic activity restrict their commercial applications. In this work, we develop a novel electrochemical oxidation etching-induced in-situ doping strategy to construct two-dimensional (2D) oxygen vacancy (Ov)-rich porous Ce-doped CoOOH ultrathin nanosheets consisting of ultrafine nanocrystals on carbon cloth (Ce-CoOOH/ CC) using lamellar cobalt nitrate-hydroxide on CC (CoLNH/CC) as the precursor for electrocatalytic OER. Benefiting from the abundant active sites and efficient mass/electron transfer rooted in the 2D ultrathin porous structure, as well as the optimized electronic structure resulting from Ce doping and Ov introducing, the Ce-CoOOH/CC exhibits a superior OER activity, with a low overpotential of 306 mV at 50 mA cm-2 and a small Tafel slope of 72.2 mV dec-1, compared to that of Co LHN/CC (368 mV and 93.9 mV dec-1), CeO2/Co LHN/CC (359 mV and 94.3 mV dec-1), and CoOOH/CC (337 mV and 75.9 mV dec-1) counterparts. Meanwhile, it shows good stability, with negligible current attenuation after 3000 cyclic voltammetry cycles or 24 h of continuous test. This study provides a feasible strategy for constructing various metal-doped porous transition metal oxyhydroxide-based electrocatalysts.

Abstract:CeOx as a (co-)catalyst has been proved a promising material toward the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in water splitting. In this study, a novel two-step method for the synthesis of cerium oxide nanoparticles in-situ generatedon CoP nanosheets toward OER is presented. Interestingly, Ce ions were gradually hydrolyzed and oxidized under the action of alkaline ligand andsolvothermal environment, and eventually existed in the form of CeOx on the 2D Co-MOF nanosheets in the first step. In the followed selective phosphating process, 2D Co-MOF nanosheets act as the template are transformed into CoP nanosheets but CeOx is still maintained. Optimal CeOx/CoP nanosheets exhibit low OER overpotential, small Tafel slope and robust durability. Furthermore, in situ electrochemical Raman spectroscopy demonstrates the transformation of the active catalytic species during the oxidation process. This in situ generation of a cocatalyst and selective phosphidation strategy provides some guidelines for the designing of highly efficient catalysts for OER and even other explorations.

Abstract:Due to tunable redox properties and cost-effectiveness, copper-ceria (Cu-CeO2 ) materials have been investigated for a wide scope of catalytic reactions. However, accurately identifying and rationally tuning the local structures in Cu-CeO2 have remained challenging, especially for nanomaterials with inherent structural complexities involving surfaces, interfaces, and defects. Here, a nanocrystal-based atom-trapping strategy to access atomically precise Cu-CeO2 nanostructures for enhanced catalysis is reported. Driven by the interfacial interactions between the presynthesized Cu and CeO2 nanocrystals, Cu atoms migrate and redisperse onto the CeO2 surface via a solid-solid route. This interfacial restructuring behavior facilitates tuning of the copper dispersion and the associated creation of surface oxygen defects on CeO2 , which gives rise to enhanced activities and stabilities catalyzing water-gas shift reaction. Combining soft and solid-state chemistry of colloidal nanocrystals provide a well-defined platform to understand, elucidate, and harness metal-support interactions. The dynamic behavior of the supported metal species can be further exploited to realize exquisite control and rational design of multicomponent nanocatalysts.

Abstract:In this study, we develop a facile hydrothermal route to build a nanostructure of porous CeO2 nanobundles with hierarchical architectures by the design and growth of anisotropic CeO2 precursors in a carbonate-assisted formaldehyde hydrothermal system without templates and surfactants. The key to this synthesis is to control the formation of their anisotropic CeO2 precursors with formate and carbonate promoted by carbonate and ammonium ions during the hydrothermal treatment. The as-prepared CeO2 nanobundles have a hierarchical porous structure assembled by numerous nanorods with a small diameter, and they show much higher catalytic activities for CO oxidation compared with CeO2 nanorods, nanowires and nanoparticles prepared by formaldehyde-assisted hydrothermal treatment and traditional precipitation methods. The outstanding catalytic performance for the nanobundles is attributed to their excellent physicochemical properties such as larger lattice cell parameters, much larger surface areas and the best redox behaviour of surface oxygen on the CeO2 surface.
