Abstract:Mesoporous TiO(2) with a hierarchically 3D dendrimeric nanostructure comprised of nanoribbon building units has been synthesized via a spontaneous self-formation process from various titanium alkoxides. These hierarchically 3D dendrimeric architectures can be obtained by a very facile, template-free method, by simply dropping a titanium butoxide precursor into methanol solution. The novel configuration of the mesoporous TiO(2) nanostructure in nanoribbon building units yields a high surface area. The calcined samples show significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity and degradation rates owing to the mesoporosity and their improved crystallinity after calcination. Furthermore, the 3D dendrimeric architectures can be preserved after phase transformation from amorphous TiO(2) to anatase or rutile, which occurs during calcination. In addition, the spontaneous self-formation process of mesoporous TiO(2) with hierarchically 3D dendrimeric architectures from the hydrolysis and condensation reaction of titanium butoxide in methanol has been followed by in situ optical microscopy (OM), revealing the secret on the formation of hierarchically 3D dendrimeric nanostructures. Moreover, mesoporous TiO(2) nanostructures with similar hierarchically 3D dendrimeric architectures can also be obtained using other titanium alkoxides. The porosities and nanostructures of the resultant products were characterized by SEM, TEM, XRD, and N(2) adsorption-desorption measurements. The present work provides a facile and reproducible method for the synthesis of novel mesoporous TiO(2) nanoarchitectures, which in turn could herald the fabrication of more efficient photocatalysts.

Abstract:Synthesis of hierarchically porous zeolites has drawn intensive interest because of their improved catalytic performance. It is highly desirable to find ways to generate these materials in a low‐cost and scalable way for their commercial applications. A solvent evaporation route has been established to synthesize hierarchically porous titanosilicalite‐1 (TS‐1). In the protocol, hexadecyltrimethoxysilane was added to an ethanolic solution of titanium isopropoxide, tetraethyl orthosilicate and tetrapropylammonium hydroxide, i.e. the embryo solution of TS‐1. The solution was subjected to solvent evaporation‐induced self‐assembly to afford an ordered dry gel. Subsequent steam‐assisted crystallization converted the dry gel into a hierarchically porous TS‐1. X‐ray powder diffraction (XRD), UV–visible diffusive reflectance spectroscopy, N2 physisorption and electron microscopic characterizations have been employed to elucidate the structure. Ti is incorporated into the tetrahedral sites of the MFI structure and mesopores around 20 nm penetrating the crystalline framework are formed. Hexadecyltrimethoxysilane plays a key role in creating mesopores as well as increasing the crystal size. The hierarchically porous TS‐1 exhibits improved activity in styrene oxidation and phenol hydroxylation. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:Mesoporous silica molecular sieve SBA-15 has been synthesized and incorporated with variable amounts of titanium via incipient-wetness impregnation with titanium isopropoxide in ethanol followed by calcination. Characterization by powder X-ray diffraction, nitrogen adsorption, X-ray photoelectron, Raman, and diffuse reflectance ultraviolet spectroscopies has been carried out to understand the chemical nature of the titanium. The results suggest that titanium is present in two distinct chemical farms and that their relative amounts depend on the titanium loading. At low titanium loading of 1 atom % relative to silicon, the titanium ions are monatomically dispersed and the pore size of SBA-15 is not altered. This isolated titanium species reaches a maximum concentration around 6 atom % relative to silicon. At higher titanium loading, titanium dioxide (anatase) is also formed. The materials with significant titanium dioxide formation have reduced pore diameters, which suggests that the titanium dioxide exists as a thin film anchored inside the mesopores of SBA-15. This new material may have potential as a novel catalyst.

Abstract:The successful synthesis of hierarchically structured titanium silicalite-1 (TS-1) with large intracrystalline macropores by steam-assisted crystallisation of mesoporous silica particles is reported. The macropore topology was imaged in 3D by using electron tomography and synchrotron radiation-based ptychographic X-ray computed tomography, revealing interconnected macropores within the crystals accounting for about 30 % of the particle volume. The study of the macropore formation mechanism revealed that the mesoporous silica particles act as a sacrificial macropore template during the synthesis. Silicon-to-titanium ratio of the macroporous TS-1 samples was successfully tuned from 100 to 44. The hierarchically structured TS-1 exhibited high activity in the liquid phase epoxidation of 2-octene with hydrogen peroxide. The hierarchically structured TS-1 surpassed a conventional nano-sized TS-1 sample in terms of alkene conversion and showed comparable selectivity to the epoxide. The flexible synthesis route described here can be used to prepare hierarchical zeolites with improved mass transport properties for other selective oxidation reactions.

Abstract:This study details the novel self-assembly of sodium titanate converted Ti-based microspheres into hierarchical porous 3D constructs, with macro-, micro-, and nanoporosity, for the first time. Ti6Al4V microspheres were suspended into 5 M NaOH (60 °C/24 h) solutions, with extensive variations in microsphere:solution ratios to modify microsphere interaction and initiate self-assembly through proximity merging of titanate surface dendritic growth. The formed structures, which either produced 1) unbonded, sodium titanate-converted microspheres; 2) flat (non-macroporous) scaffolds; or 3) open, hierarchically porous scaffolds, were then assessed in terms of their formation mechanism, chemical composition, porosity, as well as the effect of post-heat treatments on compressive mechanical properties. It was found that specific microsphere:solution ratios tended to form certain structures (<⅓ powder, 0.5 to 3 porous, >3 flat non-macroporous, >8 powder) due to a combination of microsphere freedom of movement, H2 gas bubble formation, and exposed surface reactivity. This promising discovery highlights the potential for lower temperature, simplistic production of 3D constructs with modifiable chemical properties due to the ion-exchange potential of titanate structures, with clear applications in a wide-range of fields, from medical materials to catalysts.

Interface Actions Between TiO2 and Porous Diatomite on the Structure and Photocatalytic Activity of TiO2-diatomite

Abstract:TiO2-diatomite photocatalysts were prepared by sol-gel process with various pre-modified diatomite. In order to obtain diatomite with different surface characteristics, two modification approaches including calcination and phosphoric acid treatment on the micro-structure of diatomite are introduced. The photocatalysts were characterized by XRD, XPS, nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms and micromorphology analysis. The results indicate that, compared with pure TiO2, the anatase-to-rutile phase transition temperature of TiO2 loaded on diatomite carrier is significantly increased to nearly 900 degrees C, depending on the different pretreatment method of diatomite. The photocatalytic activities of different samples were evaluated by their degradation rate of methyl orange ( MO) dye under UV and visible-light irradiation. The samples prepared by phosphoric acid pretreatment method exhibit the highest photocatalytic activity. After 90 min of UV irradiation, about 90% of MO is decomposed by the best effective photocatalyst. And after 8 h visible-light irradiation, nearly 60% of MO is decomposed by the same sample. Further mechanism investigation reveals that the H3PO4 pretreatment process can obviously change the surface features of diatomite carrier, cause the formation of Si-O-Ti bond, increase the binding strength between TiO2 and diatomite, restrain crystal growth of loaded TiO2, and thus form thermal-stable meso-porous structure at the granular spaces. It helps to build micro-, meso- and macro-porous hierarchical porous structure in TiO2-diatomite, and improves the charge and mass transfer efficiency during catalyzing process, resulting in the significantly increased photocatalytic activity of TiO2-diatomite pretreated by phosphoric acid. Abstract:Decreasing the shell thickness of TiO2 hollow spheres is a promising route to achieve an overall enhanced photocatalytic performance. However, in traditional synthetic approaches, the thin shell can not guarantee the structural stability of the TiO2 hollow spheres in the following calcination process to achieve a high degree of crystallinity. In this paper, ultrathin porous TiO2 hollow spheres with good structural stability, high degree of crystallinity as well as in small grain size were prepared through a novel etching and reconstruction route using amorphous SiO2/TiO2 hollow spheres as precursor. With hot water as etchant, the removal of SiO2 leads to the reconstruction of TiO2 hollow spheres and receiving a thinner and thinner shell. Such thin shell enables the exposure of more catalytic active sites of TiO2 nanocrystals and the improved photogenerated charge transfer and separation. Meanwhile, the residual SiO2 on the TiO2 shell protects the TiO2 nanocrystals from growing larger during high-temperature calcinations. The as-obtained ultrathin porous TiO2 hollow spheres exhibited enhanced photocatalytic activity in hydrogen production from water in comparison with those with thicker shell.

Abstract:Cocontinuous porous monolithic TiO2 was synthesized via a facile sol-gel route accompanied by phase separation followed by calcination treatment with low-cost TiOSO4 center dot xH(2)O as the titanium source, mixtures of distilled water and ethylene glycol as solvent. Formamide (FA) was exploited to initiate gelation and poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) was used as a polymer to induce the phase separation during the reaction process. The influence of the amount of PVP on the morphology, structure and crystallinity of the resultant TiO2 product was investigated by SEM, mercury intrusion porosimeter, TG-DTA, XRD and TEM. The results show that the hierarchically porous structure with a porosity of 60% can be obtained with the amount of PVP of 1.76 g, which consists of interconnected porous structures with the pore size of 1 similar to 3 um and skeletons constructed by fine nanocrystals of 20 similar to 40 nm. Anatase phase can be obtained after calcination at 600 degrees C

Abstract:Hierarchical nano-crystalline TS-1 can be directly synthesized using tetrapropylammonium hydroxide (TPAOH) as single template in the presence of a ‘seed’ gel. The hierarchical nano-crystalline TS-1 was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and nitrogen adsorption–desoprtion. Compared with the conventional TS-1, the hierarchical nano-crystalline TS-1 contained an additional porosity including supermicro/mesopores, which attributed to the interstitial voids existing between the nanocrystals. The secondary porosity in the TS-1 material provided an enhanced external surface area and high mesopore volume in favor of fast diffusion of both reactants and products, which resulted in an enhanced activity in the epoxidation of bulky molecules cyclohexene using aqueous H2O2 solution as oxidant.

Abstract:The development of hierarchical catalytic heterogeneous catalytic systems with a controlled micro/mesopore ratio is an important issue in catalysis. The main purpose of the paper is to the establish influence of the size of the template molecule on the main characteristics of hierarchical titanium-containing silicas (H-TS). The H-TS were successfully synthesized by a bi-template method using tetrapropylammonium hydroxide (TPAG) as permanent template of MFI topology and tetramethylammonium bromide (TMAB), tetraethylammonium bromide (TEAB), tetrabutylammonium hydroxide (TBAG), dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTMAB), cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), didecyldimethylammonium chloride (DDAC), tetradecylbenzyldimethylammonium bromide (TBDAB) as variable structure-directing agent (SDA) of a different size. The structure and morphology were characterized by X-ray diffraction, a Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, a Raman spectroscopy, a scanning electron microscopy and low-temperature nitrogen adsorption-desorption. The catalytic properties of the prepared titanium-containing micro-mesoporous silicas for hydroxylation of phenol with \(\hbox {H}_{2}\hbox {O}_{2}\) have been evaluated, and their activities have been compared with those of TS-1 with only micropores. The findings of the research illustrate that with an increase in the molecule volume of the structure-directing agent, there is a decrease in the proportion of the crystalline phase and in the degree of the inclusion of \(\hbox {Ti}^{4+}\) atoms in the structure of the zeolite material. Increase in the volume of the structure-directing agent leads to the decrease of the crystallinity of the samples and decrease in the specific surface area of the material and in the specific volume of micropores. The result of this research will be used to create a theoretical model of controlled micro-/mesoporous ratio in silicas and it may open new perspectives for their potential application in selective oxidation reactions involving large molecules.<h3 class="Heading">Graphic </h3>SYNOPSIS Synthesis and characterization of hierarchical titanium-containing silicas produced by a bi-template method are reported. Abstract:Porous nanostructures of semiconductors are well-known for their ability to enhance the photocatalytic activity thanks to the large specific surface area and abundant active sites for the reactions, interfacial transport, and high utilization of light arising from multireflections in the pores. In this paper, we have successfully fabricated a special porous SrTiO3 three-dimensional (3D) architecture through a facile hydrothermal reaction at 150 degrees C, using layered protonated titanate hierarchical spheres (LTHSs) of submicrometer size as a precursor template. The SrTiO3 architecture is characterized by the 3D assembly of hundreds of highly oriented nanocubes of 60-80 nm by the partial sharing of (100) faces, thereby displaying porous but single-crystal-like features reminiscent of mesocrystals. Our experimental results have shown the key roles played by the template effect akin to that in topotactic transformation in crystallography and Ostwald-ripening-assisted oriented attachment in the formation of such nanocube assemblies. Compared to the solid SrTiO3 photocatalysts previously synthesized by high-temperature solid-state methods, the as-synthesized porous SrTiO3 nanocube assemblies have relatively large specific surface areas (up to 20.83 m(2).g(-1)), and thus they have exhibited enhanced photocatalytic activity in hydrogen evolution from water splitting. Expectantly, our synthetic strategy using LTHSs as the precursor template may be extended to the fabrication of other titanate photocatalysts with similar porous hierarchical structures by taking advantage of the diversity of the perovskite-type titanate.
Direct Synthesis of Titanium Substituted SBA-15 under Conventional Hydrothermal Conditions and Their Catalysis Characterization

Abstract:Titanium-substituted mesoporous molecular sieve SBA-15 have been first successfully synthesized by a new direct approach under conventional hydrothermal conditions. The products obtained by reacting titanium butoxide with acetylacetone were used as the titanium precursor. By means of X-ray diffraction, nitrogen adsorption, UV-Vis diffuse reflectance, a successful isomorphous substitution of titanium in the silica framework of SBA-15 samples with Si/Ti = 50, 25, 20 has been proved, the substitution of Ti for Si does not change the highly ordered two-dimensional hexagonal mesostructure of SBA-15. Titanium is totally tetrahedral and highly dispersed. Higher titanium loading leads to the formation of titanium dioxide. Comparing with two-step preparation method, it shows that under the direct synthesis method, or one-step preparation method, titanium and silicon precursor hydrolyze harmoniously. Ti-SBA-15 demonstrates relatively high catalytic ability on the oxidation of cyclohexene. The differences of structure and catalytic ability between Ti-SBA-15 synthesized by one-step method and two-step method are explained.

Abstract:Titanium dioxide (TiO2) polymorphs photocatalysts containing two or more crystal phases have customarily been synthesized at high temperature using complicated procedures or expensive equipment, accompanied by the formation of by-products. Therefore, here, we propose an effective acid-regulated hydrolysis and condensation of titanium cation strategy to directly synthesize mesoporous TiO2 with controllable phase junctions. In the method, poly dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride (PDADMAC) is used as the structure directing agent to produce mesostructure, and hydrochloric acid (HCl) is used as the acid regulator and coordination agent to adjust the hydrolysis and condensation modes of Ti4+, thereby controlling the crystal structure and phase junctions of synthesized mesoporous TiO2 polymorphs. Furthermore, since the heterophase junctions and mesostructure effectively improve the separation and transfer of photo-generated electron-holes, the obtained R74B26 with unique brookite and rutile phase junctions owns the highest photocatalytic activity among all obtained samples, the evolution rate of H2 is 8.98 mmol h‐1−1 g−1. This work will open up new perspectives toward the synthesis of mesoporous polycrystalline material for various potential applications.

Abstract:Porous intermetallics show potential in the field of filtration and separation as well as in the field of catalysis. Herein, porous TiFe 2 intermetallics were fabricated by the reactive synthesis of elemental powders. The phase transformation and pore formation of porous TiFe 2 intermetallics were investigated, and its corrosion behavior and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance in alkali solution were studied. Porous TiFe 2 intermetallics with porosity in the range of 34.4%–56.4% were synthesized by the diffusion reaction of Ti and Fe elements, and the pore formation of porous TiFe 2 intermetallic compound is the result of a combination of the bridging effect and the Kirkendall effect. The porous TiFe 2 samples exhibit better corrosion resistance compared with porous 316L stainless steel, which is related to the formation of uniform nanosheets on the surface that hinder further corrosion, and porous TiFe 2 electrode shows the overpotential of 220.6 and 295.6 mV at 10 and 100 mA·cm −2 , suggesting a good catalytic performance. The synthesized porous Fe-based intermetallic has a controllable pore structure as well as excellent corrosion resistance, showing its potential in the field of filtration and separation.

Abstract:Hierarchical porous TiO2-carbon hybrid composites with a hollow structure were successfully fabricated by a one-pot low-temperature solvothermal approach in the presence of dodecylamine. The growth mechanism of the hierarchical hollow spheres was demonstrated to include the condensation of a carbon source and the co-instantaneous in situ hydrolysis of Ti-alkoxide, and the consequent assembly of TiO2@C hybrid nanoparticles on a self-conglobated template. As compared with the TiO2@C solid spheres (86%), the hierarchical TiO2@C hybrid hollow spheres exhibited an enhanced photocatalytic efficiency (97%) for the visible-light photooxidation of rhodamine B. Investigations demonstrated that the enhancement can be attributed to the hierarchical porous hollow structure. Moreover, the superoxide radical was detected as the main active species generated in the oxidation reaction of RhB over TiO2@C photocatalysts. A corresponding mechanism was also proposed for the photocatalysis process.
Synthesis of easily shaped ordered mesoporous titanium-containing silica

Abstract:A synthesis for easily shaped Ti-containing mesoporous silicates has been reported, which uses as-prepared mesoporous silica SBA-15 as a host template, an inorganic titanium salt (such as TiCl3 or TiOSO4) as a titanium source and water as a solvent. The synthesis involves three steps: obtaining as-prepared mesostructured silicate, grafting functional moieties, and thermal treatment, which is feasible in industry. The as-prepared titanium-containing mesostructured silicates can be easily shaped. XRD, N-2 sorption isotherms, TEM, FT-IR and UV-vis techniques reveal that Ti-containing mesoporous silicates after calcination have the highly ordered 2-D hexagonal mesostructure, high surface areas (475-837 m(2)/g), large pore volumes (0.56-0.92 cm(3)/g), uniform pore sizes (6.4-7.3 nm), and tetrahedrally incorporated titanium species in silica frameworks. The titanium source has a great influence on grafting.

Abstract:A direct-triblock-copolymer templating method is demonstrated to synthesize ordered mesoporous crystalline C-TiO2 (MCT) composites using phenolic resins and acid–base pairs [acidic TiCl4 and basic counterpart Ti(OC4H7)4] as carbon and titanium sources, respectively. The composites possess highly crystalline anatase pore walls that are “glued” by amorphous carbon, ordered mesostructure, high surface areas (∼200 m2/g), and large pore volumes (∼0.15 cm3/g). The titania content is as high as 87 wt%. MCT composite favors the immobilization of proteins and enhances the electrocatalytic properties in relation to the reduction of hydrogen peroxide.

Abstract:Amorphous titania was added to the gel for titanium-silicalite synthesis using TPABr as templating agent. In the hydrothermal condition, a nanostructured titanium-silicalite grew on the amorphous titania owing to the restriction effect of titania. The resulting material had low XRD crystallinity (below 40%) but high IR crystallinity (I550/I450 > 0.7). High resolution TEM showed that the material contained particles with dimension less than 50 nm. A typical catalyst with n(Si)/n(Ti) = 2 contained secondary porous structure with diameter of about 8 nm, which was disclosed by N2 desorption data. The catalytic activity of TS/TiO2 catalyst was even higher than TS-1 catalyst in epoxidation of 3-chloropropylene with aqueous hydrogen peroxide. A new cheap method to prepare the highly active catalyst for selective oxidation was provided.
