Abstract:A new borosilicate zeolite vertical bar N2H36C16 vertical bar[Si22B2O48].H2O, denoted as EMM-26, has been synthesized by employing a linear dicationic organic structure directing agent 1,6-bis(N-methylpyrrolidinium) hexane (OSDA). EMM-26 has a novel zeolite framework and contains two-dimensional (2D) intersecting 10 x 10-ring channels. Its structure was solved from sub-micrometer sized crystals using rotation electron diffraction (RED) and refined against both the RED and synchrotron powder diffraction data. We have shown for the first time that RED data alone can be used to accurately determine zeolite structures. The OSDAs can be removed from the framework generating permanent pores. EMM-26 shows good CO2 uptake and CO2/CH4 selectivity.

Abstract:AbstractZeolites have been widely used in industry owing to their ordered micropores and stable frameworks. The pore sizes and shapes are the key parameters that affect the selectivity and efficiency in their applications in catalysis, sorption, and separation. Zeolites with pores defined by 10 and 12 TO4 tetrahedra are often used for various catalytic processes. To optimize the performance of zeolites, it is extremely desirable to fine‐tune the pore sizes/shapes. The first germanosilicate zeolite with a three‐dimensional 11×11×12‐ring channel system, PKU‐16 (PKU, Peking University) is presented. Nanosized PKU‐16 was structurally characterized by the new three‐dimensional rotation electron diffraction (RED) technique. PKU‐16 is structurally related to the zeolite β polymorph C (BEC, 12×12×12‐ring channels) by rotating half of the four‐rings in double mtw units.

Abstract:A new aluminosilicate zeolite, denoted EMM-37, with a 3D small pore channel system, has been synthesized using a diquaternary ammonium molecule as the structure directing agent (SDA) and metakaolin as the aluminum source. The structures of both as-made and calcined forms of EMM-37 were solved and refined using continuous rotation electron diffraction (cRED) data. cRED is a powerful method for the collection of 3D electron diffraction data from submicron- and nanosized crystals, which allows for successful solution and refinement of complex structures in symmetry as low as P1̅.

Abstract:Electron crystallography has evolved as a powerful method for structural characterization of a wide range of materials. It has two significant advantages over other methods for structure determination, e.g. X-ray diffraction. Electrons interact much more strongly with matter compared to X-rays and they can be focused by electromagnetic lenses to form images with atomic resolution. These advantages make electron crystallography a unique tool for characterization of crystalline materials suffering from small crystal size and complex or disordered structures. Zeolites are a class of microporous materials with significance in several applications. They often possess complex and disordered structures, which demand large efforts in the structure determination. Over the last years, two new electron crystallographic methods have been developed; the rotation electron diffraction (RED) and the structure projection reconstruction from a through-focus series of high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) images. In this thesis, they will be applied for structure determination of four new zeolite structures, including EMM-25 and EMM-23 with two ordered structures, and ITQ-39 and ITQ-38 with disordered structures. Each of the structure solutions have different challenges to overcome. The high silica borosilicate EMM-25 was solved by the RED method. The aluminosilicate EMM-23 was solved by a combination of HRTEM and RED. The structure solution of two materials with disordered structures, ITQ-39 and ITQ-38, will be described. For materials containing disorders, structure projection images are of utmost importance. Furthermore, the mesoporosity inside hierarchically porous ZSM-5 crystals was studied by a combination of focused ion beam (FIB) and HRTEM imaging. The last part of this thesis explores STEM imaging for use in structure determination from 3D reconstruction.

Abstract:Stable, multidimensional, and extra-large pore zeolites are desirable by industry for catalysis and separation of bulky molecules. Here we report EMM-23, the first stable, three-dimensional extra-large pore aluminosilicate zeolite. The structure of EMM-23 was determined from submicron-sized crystals by combining electron crystallography, solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and powder X-ray diffraction. The framework contains highly unusual trilobe-shaped pores that are bound by 21-24 tetrahedral atoms. These extra-large pores are intersected perpendicularly by a two-dimensional 10-ring channel system. Unlike most ideal zeolite frameworks that have tetrahedral sites with four next-nearest tetrahedral neighbors (Q(4) species), this unusual zeolite possesses a high density of Q(2) and Q(3) silicon species. It is the first zeolite prepared directly with Q(2) species that are intrinsic to the framework. EMM-23 is stable after calcination at 540 degrees C. The formation of this highly interrupted structure is facilitated by the high density of extra framework positive charge introduced by the dicationic structure directing agent.
SCM-25: A Zeolite with Ordered Meso-cavities Interconnected by 12 × 12 × 10-Ring Channels Determined by 3D Electron Diffraction

Abstract:Zeolites with large cavities that are accessible via wide pore windows are desirable but very rare. They have been dominantly used as catalysts in industry. Here we report a novel porous germanosilicate SCM-25, the zeolite structure containing ordered meso-cavities (29.9 × 7.6 × 6.0 Å3) interconnected by 10- and 12-ring channels. SCM-25 was synthesized as nanosized crystals by using a simple organic structure-directing agent (OSDA). Three-dimensional (3D) electron diffraction shows that SCM-25 crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Cmmm with a = 14.62 Å, b = 51.82 Å, c = 13.11 Å, which is one of the zeolites with the largest unit cell dimensions. We demonstrate that 3D electron diffraction is a powerful technique for determining the complex structure of SCM-25, including the disorders and distributions of framework atoms silicon and germanium. SCM-25 has a high surface area (510 m2/g) and high thermal stability (700 °C). Furthermore, we propose a potential postsynthetic strategy for the preparation of zeolites with ordered meso-cavities by applying the ADOR (assembly-disassembly-organization-reassembly) approach.

Abstract:AbstractThe structure of zeolite SSZ‐43 was determined by 3D electron diffraction, synchrotron X‐ray powder diffraction, and high‐resolution transmission electron microscopy. The SSZ‐43 framework forms one‐dimensional, sinusoidal 12‐ring channels from 5461 butterfly units commonly found in other zeolites, but with unique 6.5×6.5 Å apertures and 12‐ring 6.5×8.9 Å windows perpendicular to the channels. SSZ‐43 crystals are intergrowths of two polytypes: ≈90 % orthorhombic polytype A with ABAB stacking of the 12‐rings, and ≈10 % monoclinic polytype B with ABCABC stacking. Molecular modeling performed on the idealized Si‐SSZ‐43 structure along with empirical relationships for zeolite selectivity in boron‐ and aluminum‐containing synthesis gels were used in a combined approach to design new di‐quaternary ammonium organic structure‐directing agents (OSDAs). Experimental trials demonstrated that the new OSDAs produced SSZ‐43 over a broader range of compositions than previous mono‐quaternary OSDAs.

Abstract:Layered solids often form thin plate-like crystals that are too small to be studied by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Although powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) is the conventional method for studying such solids, it has limitations because of peak broadening and peak overlapping. We have recently developed a software-based rotation electron diffraction (RED) method for automated collection and processing of 3D electron diffraction data. Here we demonstrate the ab initio structure determination of two interlayer expanded zeolites, the microporous silicates COE-3 and COE-4 (COE-n stands for International Network of Centers of Excellence-n), from submicron-sized crystals by the RED method. COE-3 and COE-4 are built of ferrierite-type layers pillared by (-O-Si(CH3)2-O-) and (-O-Si(OH)2-O-) linker groups, respectively. The structures contain 2D intersecting 10-ring channels running parallel to the ferrierite layers. Because both COE-3 and COE-4 are electron-beam sensitive, a combination of RED datasets from 2 to 3 different crystals was needed for the structure solution and subsequent structure refinement. The structures were further refined by Rietveld refinement against the PXRD data. The structure models obtained from RED and PXRD were compared.

Abstract:The structures of zeolite beta polymorph B and of IM-5 have been determined by combining selected area electron diffraction (SAED) patterns and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) images. The zeolite beta polymorph B structure could be solved using just a single HRTEM image while that of IM-5 required three images taken along the main crystallographic directions. The average deviations of the IM-5 model from that refined using X-ray powder diffraction data are about 0.16 angstrom for Si and 0. 31 angstrom for O.

Abstract:Electron crystallography has two main advantages in structure solution compared to X-ray diffraction: 1) crystals millions times smaller than what is needed for X-ray diffraction can be studied and 2) the crystallographic structure factor phases are present in high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) images [1].In order to make electron crystallography more feasible for non-TEM experts, we have developed two methods; 1)rotation electron diffraction (RED) [2] for collectingcomplete 3D electron diffraction data that transforms a TEM into a single nano-crystal diffractometer and 2)structure projection reconstruction [3] that determines the defocus values from a through-focus series of HRTEM images.Each image in the series is corrected for the effects of contrast transfer function and then combined into a structure projection image.The method works for both crystalline and non-crystalline objects.Here we show how these two methods are used to solve the structures of complex intergrown zeolites ITQ-39 [4].The structure was confirmed by simulations of powder X-ray diffraction from the disordered model.The methods are general and can be applied to any crystalline materials, where the crystals are too small or the structures too complicated to be solved by X-ray powder diffraction alone, especially for those crystals containing defects.
SSZ-87: a Borosilicate Zeolite with Unusually Flexible 10-Ring Pore Openings.

Abstract:The structure of the as-synthesized borosilicate zeolite SSZ-87 has been solved by combining high-resolution X-ray powder diffraction (XPD) and rotation electron diffraction (RED) techniques. The unit cell and space group symmetry were found from the XPD data, and were essential for the initial analysis of the RED data. Although the RED data were only 15% complete, this proved to be enough for structure solution with the program Focus. The framework topology is the same as that of ITQ-52 (IFW), but for SSZ-87 the locations of the structure directing agent (SDA) and the B atoms could also be determined. SSZ-87 has large cages interconnected by 8- and 10-rings. However, results of hydroisomerization and Al insertion experiments are much more in line with those found for 12-ring zeolites. This prompted the structure analyses of SSZ-87 after calcination, and Al insertion. During calcination, the material is also partially deboronated, and the location of the resulting vacancies is consistent with those of the B atoms in the as-synthesized material. After Al insertion, SSZ-87 was found to contain almost no B and to be defect free. In its calcined and deboronated form, the pore system of SSZ-87 is more flexible than those of other 10-ring zeolites. This can be explained by the fact that the large cages in SSZ-87 are connected via single rather than double 10-ring windows and that there are vacancies in some of these 10-rings.

Abstract:The aluminosilicate zeolite ZSM-43 (where ZSM = Zeolite Socony Mobil) was first synthesized more than 3 decades ago, but its chemical structure remained unsolved because of its poor crystallinity and small crystal size. Here we present optimization of the ZSM-43 synthesis using a high-throughput approach and subsequent structure determination by the combination of electron crystallographic methods and powder X-ray diffraction. The synthesis required the use of a combination of both inorganic (Cs+ and K+) and organic (choline) structure-directing agents. High-throughput synthesis enabled a screening of the synthesis conditions, which made it possible to optimize the synthesis, despite its complexity, in order to obtain a material with significantly improved crystallinity. When both rotation electron diffraction and high resolution transmission electron microscopy imaging techniques are applied, the structure of ZSM-43 could be determined. The structure of ZSM-43 is a new zeolite framework type and possesses a unique two-dimensional channel system limited by 8-ring channels ZSM-43 is stable upon calcination, and sorption measurements show that the material is suitable for adsorption of carbon dioxide as well as methane.

Abstract:A new germanosilicate zeolite named SCM-15 (Sinopec Composite Material No. 15), the first zeolite containing a 3-dimensional (3D) channel system with interconnected 12-, 12-, and 10-ring channels (pore sizes: 6.1×7.2, 6.1×7.4, and 5.2×5.9 Å), has been synthesized using neutral 4-pyrrolidinopyridine as organic structure-directing agents (OSDAs). Its structure has been determined by combining single-crystal electron diffraction (SCED) and synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction (SPXD) data. The unique open framework structure of SCM-15 is related to that of FOS-5 (BEC), ITQ-7 (ISV), PKU-16 (POS), ITQ-26 (IWS), ITQ-21, Beta polymorph B, and SU-78B, since all these framework structures can be constructed from similar chains which are connected through shared 4-ring or double 4-ring (d4r) units. Based on this relation, six topologically reasonable 3D large or extra-large pore hypothetical zeolites are predicted.

However, many materials are obtained as polycrystalline powders with large unit cells and/or complex structures, making it challenging to investigate detailed structural changes using conventional X-ray diffraction techniques. Here, we employ time-resolved 3D electron diffraction (3D ED) to unravel the topotactic reactions and transformations of extra-large pore silicate zeolites ECNU-45 to ECNU-46. Notably, ECNU-45 features 3D interconnecting 24×10×10-ring channels, while ECNU-46 exhibits 1D 24-ring channels connected to 10-ring pockets. ECNU-45 and ECNU-46 are the first reported examples of pure silicate zeolites with pores larger than 22-rings. Our findings showcase detailed changes at six distinct tetrahedral Si sites, involving atom displacement, addition, and removal of framework atoms through bond breakage and formation. This work not only presents the discovery of novel zeolites but also provides unprecedented atomic-level insights into the dynamic processes of topotactic reactions. Our results have significant implications for advancing materials engineering and understanding complex solid-state reactions at an atomic scale.

Localized Boron Sites in Large Pore Borosilicate Zeolite EMM-59 Determined by Electron Crystallography

Abstract:The structure of a novel large pore borosilicate zeolite EMM-59 (|C19H42N2|8[B5.2Si218.8O448]) with localized framework boron sites was determined using three-dimensional electron diffraction (3D ED) and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) imaging. EMM-59 was synthesized using 2,2-(cyclopentane-1,1-diyl)bis(N,N-diethyl-N-methylethan-1-aminium) as an organic structure-directing agent (OSDA). The framework has a three-dimensional intersecting channel system delimited by 12 × 10 × 10-ring openings and contains 28 T and 60 oxygen atoms in the asymmetric unit, making it the most complex monoclinic zeolite. The 3D ED data collected from as-made EMM-59 under cryogenic conditions revealed three symmetry-independent locations of the OSDAs and STEM imaging showed that the OSDAs are flexible and adopt different molecular conformations in channels with identical structural environments. The framework boron atoms were exclusively found in T-sites of 4-rings, especially those shared by multiple 4-rings. The tetrahedral BO4 with the highest boron content (38.6%) was transformed into a trigonal BO3 after the OSDAs were removed upon calcination. Its location and the boron content could also be identified by STEM imaging.

Abstract:Electron crystallography has two main advantages in structure solution compared to X-ray diffraction: 1) crystals millions times smaller than what is needed for X-ray diffraction can be studied and 2) the crystallographic structure factor phases are present in high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) images [1].In order to make electron crystallography more feasible for non-TEM experts, we have developed two methods; 1)rotation electron diffraction (RED) [2] for collectingcomplete 3D electron diffraction data that transforms a TEM into a single nano-crystal diffractometer and 2)structure projection reconstruction [3] that determines the defocus values from a through-focus series of HRTEM images.Each image in the series is corrected for the effects of contrast transfer function and then combined into a structure projection image.The method works for both crystalline and non-crystalline objects.Here we show how these two methods are used to solve the structures of complex intergrown zeolites ITQ-39 [4].The structure was confirmed by simulations of powder X-ray diffraction from the disordered model.The methods are general and can be applied to any crystalline materials, where the crystals are too small or the structures too complicated to be solved by X-ray powder diffraction alone, especially for those crystals containing defects.
