Abstract:The aluminosilicate zeolite ZSM-43 (where ZSM = Zeolite Socony Mobil) was first synthesized more than 3 decades ago, but its chemical structure remained unsolved because of its poor crystallinity and small crystal size. Here we present optimization of the ZSM-43 synthesis using a high-throughput approach and subsequent structure determination by the combination of electron crystallographic methods and powder X-ray diffraction. The synthesis required the use of a combination of both inorganic (Cs+ and K+) and organic (choline) structure-directing agents. High-throughput synthesis enabled a screening of the synthesis conditions, which made it possible to optimize the synthesis, despite its complexity, in order to obtain a material with significantly improved crystallinity. When both rotation electron diffraction and high resolution transmission electron microscopy imaging techniques are applied, the structure of ZSM-43 could be determined. The structure of ZSM-43 is a new zeolite framework type and possesses a unique two-dimensional channel system limited by 8-ring channels ZSM-43 is stable upon calcination, and sorption measurements show that the material is suitable for adsorption of carbon dioxide as well as methane.

Abstract:AbstractThe structure of zeolite SSZ‐43 was determined by 3D electron diffraction, synchrotron X‐ray powder diffraction, and high‐resolution transmission electron microscopy. The SSZ‐43 framework forms one‐dimensional, sinusoidal 12‐ring channels from 5461 butterfly units commonly found in other zeolites, but with unique 6.5×6.5 Å apertures and 12‐ring 6.5×8.9 Å windows perpendicular to the channels. SSZ‐43 crystals are intergrowths of two polytypes: ≈90 % orthorhombic polytype A with ABAB stacking of the 12‐rings, and ≈10 % monoclinic polytype B with ABCABC stacking. Molecular modeling performed on the idealized Si‐SSZ‐43 structure along with empirical relationships for zeolite selectivity in boron‐ and aluminum‐containing synthesis gels were used in a combined approach to design new di‐quaternary ammonium organic structure‐directing agents (OSDAs). Experimental trials demonstrated that the new OSDAs produced SSZ‐43 over a broader range of compositions than previous mono‐quaternary OSDAs.

Abstract:AbstractZeolites have been widely used in industry owing to their ordered micropores and stable frameworks. The pore sizes and shapes are the key parameters that affect the selectivity and efficiency in their applications in catalysis, sorption, and separation. Zeolites with pores defined by 10 and 12 TO4 tetrahedra are often used for various catalytic processes. To optimize the performance of zeolites, it is extremely desirable to fine‐tune the pore sizes/shapes. The first germanosilicate zeolite with a three‐dimensional 11×11×12‐ring channel system, PKU‐16 (PKU, Peking University) is presented. Nanosized PKU‐16 was structurally characterized by the new three‐dimensional rotation electron diffraction (RED) technique. PKU‐16 is structurally related to the zeolite β polymorph C (BEC, 12×12×12‐ring channels) by rotating half of the four‐rings in double mtw units.

Abstract:Unit-cell-thin zeolitic nanosheets have emerged as fascinating materials for catalysis and separation. The controllability of nanosheet stacking is extremely challenging in the chemistry of two-dimensional zeolitic materials. To date, the organization of zeolitic nanosheets in hydrothermal synthesis has been limited by the lack of tunable control over the guest-host interactions between organic structure-directing agents (OSDAs) and zeolitic nanosheets. A direct synthetic methodology is reported that enables systematic manipulation of the aluminosilicate MWW-type nanosheet stacking. Variable control of guest-host interactions is rationally achieved by synergistically altering the charge density of OSDAs and synthetic silica-to-alumina composition. These finely controlled interactions allow successful preparation of a series of three-dimensional (3D) zeolites, with MWW-layer stacking in wide ranges from variably disorder to fully ordered, leading to tunable catalytic activity in the cracking reaction. These results highlight unprecedented opportunities to modulate zeolitic nanosheets arrangement in 3D zeolites whose structure can be tailored for catalysis and separation.
SSZ-87: a Borosilicate Zeolite with Unusually Flexible 10-Ring Pore Openings.

Abstract:The structure of the as-synthesized borosilicate zeolite SSZ-87 has been solved by combining high-resolution X-ray powder diffraction (XPD) and rotation electron diffraction (RED) techniques. The unit cell and space group symmetry were found from the XPD data, and were essential for the initial analysis of the RED data. Although the RED data were only 15% complete, this proved to be enough for structure solution with the program Focus. The framework topology is the same as that of ITQ-52 (IFW), but for SSZ-87 the locations of the structure directing agent (SDA) and the B atoms could also be determined. SSZ-87 has large cages interconnected by 8- and 10-rings. However, results of hydroisomerization and Al insertion experiments are much more in line with those found for 12-ring zeolites. This prompted the structure analyses of SSZ-87 after calcination, and Al insertion. During calcination, the material is also partially deboronated, and the location of the resulting vacancies is consistent with those of the B atoms in the as-synthesized material. After Al insertion, SSZ-87 was found to contain almost no B and to be defect free. In its calcined and deboronated form, the pore system of SSZ-87 is more flexible than those of other 10-ring zeolites. This can be explained by the fact that the large cages in SSZ-87 are connected via single rather than double 10-ring windows and that there are vacancies in some of these 10-rings.

Abstract:Zeolites have been extensively studied over many years due to their widely applications in catalysis, ion exchange, adsorption, and separation.[1] Knowing the structure of zeolite is important for understanding their properties and predicting possible applications of such materials. Structure determination of zeolites has remains challenging, as submicroand nano-sized crystals are often obtained. Here, we elucidate a novel germanate-based zeolite PKU-14 with a 3D 12*12*12-ring channel system. The structure was solved by combing high-resolution PXRD, rotation electron diffraction method, NMR and IR spectroscopy. Ordered Ge4O4 vacancies inside the [46612] cages has been found in PKU-14, where a unique water dimer was located at the vacancies and played a structure-directing role.

Abstract:An organic cation lacking specificity in its structure-directing action offers the possibility, through the screening of other structure-directing parameters, to synthesize a variety of zeolites. In this work we show that the organic structure-directing agent 2-isopropyl-1,3-dimethylimidazolium (2iPr13DMI) can produce up to seven different zeolite phases depending on water concentration, the presence of inorganic impurities, crystallization temperature and time, and germanium molar fraction. The obtained phases are very different in terms of pore system, connectivity of the zeolite structure and structural units. At the pure SiO2 side, ZSM-12 and SSZ-35 dominate, with ZSM-12 being favored by the presence of potassium impurities and by less concentrated conditions. The introduction of Ge at low levels favors SSZ-35 over ZSM-12 and as the Ge fraction increases it successively affords CSV, -CLO and two distinct UOS zeolites, HPM-11 and HPM-6. These two zeolites have the same topology but distinct chemical compositions and display powder X-ray diffraction patterns that are much different from each other and from that of as-synthesized IM-16 (UOS reference material). They also show different symmetry at 96 K. Rietveld refinements of the three as-made UOS materials mentioned are provided. HPM-6 and HPM-11 are produced in distinct, non-adjacent crystallization fields. The frequent cocrystallization of the chiral STW zeolite, however, did not afford its synthesis as a pure phase. Molecular mechanics simulations of the location of the organic cation and host-guest interactions fail to explain the observed trends, but also considering the intrinsic stability of the zeolites and the effect of germanium help to rationalize the results. The study is completed by DFT calculations of the NMR chemical shifts of 13C in UOS (helping to understand splittings in the spectrum) and 19F in CSV (supporting the location of fluoride inside the new [4452], which is an incomplete double 4-ring). Organic structure directing agents with low specificity offer opportunities for zeolite discovery by tweaking other structure-directing factors.

Abstract:A zeolite phillipsite (PHI) analogue with low silica contents has been synthesized from a NH4F–Al2O3–SiO2–piperazine–H2O system. The obtained zeolite PHI analogue grows as agglomerates of intergrown submicron-sized crystals. The synthesis process in fluoride-based media has been investigated. It has been unequivocally demonstrated that no zeolite phase occurred in the absence of piperazine or NH4F. The results of CHN elemental analyses as well as of TG analyses confirmed that both piperazine and NH4+ had been incorporated into the zeolitic structure. Thus, the zeolite PHI analogue is seemingly derived from the cooperative structure-directing effect of the organic molecule piperazine and the inorganic cation NH4+. The use of a suitable combination of inorganic cation and organic molecule in fluoride-based media may provide an effective means of exploring new frameworks with low Si/Al ratios.

Abstract:A new borosilicate zeolite vertical bar N2H36C16 vertical bar[Si22B2O48].H2O, denoted as EMM-26, has been synthesized by employing a linear dicationic organic structure directing agent 1,6-bis(N-methylpyrrolidinium) hexane (OSDA). EMM-26 has a novel zeolite framework and contains two-dimensional (2D) intersecting 10 x 10-ring channels. Its structure was solved from sub-micrometer sized crystals using rotation electron diffraction (RED) and refined against both the RED and synchrotron powder diffraction data. We have shown for the first time that RED data alone can be used to accurately determine zeolite structures. The OSDAs can be removed from the framework generating permanent pores. EMM-26 shows good CO2 uptake and CO2/CH4 selectivity.

Abstract:SCM-14 (Sinopec Composite Material No. 14), a new stable germanosilicate zeolite with a 12×8×8-ring channel system, was synthesized using commercially available 4-pyrrolidinopyridine as organic structure-directing agents (OSDAs) in fluoride medium. The framework structure of SCM-14 was determined using rotation electron diffraction (RED), and refined against synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction (SXPD) data for both as-made and calcined materials. The framework structure of SCM-14 is closely related to that of three known zeolites: mordenite (MOR), GUS-1 (GON), and IM-16 (UOS). SCM-14 has the same projection as that of mordenite and GUS-1 when viewed along the 12-ring channels, and possesses two more straight 8-ring channels running perpendicular to the 12-ring channels. The structure of SCM-14 can be constructed by either the same layers as that of GUS-1 or the same columns as that of IM-16. Based on their structural relationship, three topologically reasonable hypothetical zeolites were predicted.
Optimized Synthesis and Structural Characterization of the Borosilicate MCM-70

Abstract:A structure analysis of the borosilicate zeolite MCM-70, whose synthesis had been patented in 2003, was reported in 2005. Unfortunately, that structure analysis was somewhat ambiguous. Anisotropic line broadening made it difficult to model the peak shape, some peaks in the electron density map could not be interpreted satisfactorily, the framework geometry was distorted, and MAS NMR results were partially contradictory. In an attempt to resolve some of these points, an optimization of the synthesis was undertaken, and the structure was reinvestigated. The structure was solved from synchrotron powder diffraction data collected on an as-synthesized sample (Pmn2(1), a = 13.31.67(1) angstrom, b = 4.6604(1) angstrom, c = 8.7000(1) angstrom) using a powder charge-flipping algorithm. The framework topology, with a 1-dimensional, 10-ring channel system, is identical to the one previously reported. However, the Bin this new sample was found to be ordered in the framework, fully occupying one of the four tetrahedral sites. Two extra-framework K+ ion positions, each coordinated to five framework O atoms and one water molecule, were also found. The solid state Si-29, B-11 and H-1 NMR results are fully consistent with this ordered structure.

Abstract:Highly crystalline and (hydro)thermally stable zeolites with extra-large pores [≥14-ring (14-R)] are desirable as catalysts. A novel zeolite, ECNU-9, with an intersecting 14*12-R channel system was rationally designed and synthesized by a building block strategy, in which the interlayer expansion of a two-dimensional silicate structure was realized by combining organic amine assisted layer-stacking reorganization and subsequent silylation with a square-shaped single 4-ring (S4R) silane, 1,3,5,7-tetramethylcyclotetrasiloxane (TMCS). The PLS-3 precursor was disassembled into building blocks and then intercalated with flexible and removable organic amine pillars to offer enough interlayer spacing for accommodating TMCS molecules. The additionally introduced building blocks interconnected the neighboring layers to construct new 14-R and 12-R pores. ECNU-9 possesses a well-ordered structure with a novel topology. The corresponding Ti-ECNU-9, with tetrahedral Ti ions in the framework, showed superior catalytic performance in the selective epoxidation of bulky alkenes.

Abstract:Zeolites with large cavities that are accessible via wide pore windows are desirable but very rare. They have been dominantly used as catalysts in industry. Here we report a novel porous germanosilicate SCM-25, the zeolite structure containing ordered meso-cavities (29.9 × 7.6 × 6.0 Å3) interconnected by 10- and 12-ring channels. SCM-25 was synthesized as nanosized crystals by using a simple organic structure-directing agent (OSDA). Three-dimensional (3D) electron diffraction shows that SCM-25 crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Cmmm with a = 14.62 Å, b = 51.82 Å, c = 13.11 Å, which is one of the zeolites with the largest unit cell dimensions. We demonstrate that 3D electron diffraction is a powerful technique for determining the complex structure of SCM-25, including the disorders and distributions of framework atoms silicon and germanium. SCM-25 has a high surface area (510 m2/g) and high thermal stability (700 °C). Furthermore, we propose a potential postsynthetic strategy for the preparation of zeolites with ordered meso-cavities by applying the ADOR (assembly-disassembly-organization-reassembly) approach.

Abstract:The synthesis of zeolite X is characterized by UV Raman spectroscopy, NMR spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. UV Raman spectra of the liquid phase of the synthesis system indicate that Al(OH)4− species are incorporated into silicate species, and the polymeric silicate species are depolymerized into monomeric silicate species during the early stage of zeolite formation. An intermediate species possessing Raman bands at 307, 503, 858 and 1020 cm−1 is detected during the crystallization in the solid phase transformation. The intermediate species is attributed to the β cage, the secondary building unit of zeolite X. A model for the formation of zeolite X is proposed, which involves four-membered rings connecting to each other via six-membered ring to form β cages, then the β cages interconnect via double six-membered rings to form the framework of zeolite X.

Abstract:A novel zeolite-like metal-organic framework, [Cd-12(trz)(12)center dot F-10 center dot(SiF6)(3)].(H3O)(4) (Htrz = 1,2,4-triazole), has been synthesized under solvothermal conditions using 1H-1,2,4-triazole-3-carboxylic acid and CdF2 as the starting materials. The complex has been characterized by elemental analysis, IR, SEM-EDS, gas adsorption, powder and single-crystal X-ray diffiaction analyses. The title complex crystallizes in the cubic I-43m space group, with a = 14.6436(8), V = 3140.1(3) angstrom(3), Z = 2, M-r = 2857.96, D-c = 3.023 g/cm(3) and F(000) = 2668. The final R = 0.0653 and wR = 0.1880 for 586 observed reflections with I> 2 sigma(I). In the title complex, three adjacent Cd(II) centers are connected by three mu(3)-bridging triazole ligands to form triagonal secondary building units (SBUs), which are further interconnected to fouli a three-dimensional skeleton with tetrahedral cages.
Direct Synthesis of Aluminosilicate IWR Zeolite from a Strong Interaction Between Zeolite Framework and Organic Template.

Abstract:A large amount of zeolite structures are still not synthetically available or not available in the form of aluminosilicate currently. Despite significant progress in the development of predictive concepts for zeolite synthesis, accessing some of these new materials is still challenging. One example is the IWR structure as well. Despite successful synthesis of Ge-based IWR zeolites, direct synthesis of aluminosilicate IWR zeolite is still not successful. In this report we show how a suitable organic structure directing agent (OSDA), through modeling of an OSDA/zeolite cage interaction, could access directly the aluminum-containing IWR structure (denoted as COE-6), which might allow access to new classes of materials and thus open opportunities in valuable chemical applications. The experimental results reveal that the COE-6 zeolites with a SiO2/Al2O3 ratio as low as 30 could be obtained. Very interestingly, the COE-6 zeolite has much higher hydrothermal and thermal stabilities than those of the conventional Ge-Al-IWR zeolite. In methanol-to-propylene (MTP) reaction, the COE-6 zeolite exhibits excellent selectivity for propylene, offering a potential catalyst for MTP reaction in the future.
Atomic-scale insights into topotactic transformations in extra-large pore silicate zeolites using time-resolved 3D electron diffraction

Abstract:Understanding the atomic scale structural dynamics of phase transformations is crucial for developing new materials and tailoring the properties of the materials. However, many materials are obtained as polycrystalline powders with large unit cells and/or complex structures, making it challenging to investigate detailed structural changes using conventional X-ray diffraction techniques. Here, we employ time-resolved 3D electron diffraction (3D ED) to unravel the topotactic reactions and transformations of extra-large pore silicate zeolites ECNU-45 to ECNU-46. Notably, ECNU-45 features 3D interconnecting 24×10×10-ring channels, while ECNU-46 exhibits 1D 24-ring channels connected to 10-ring pockets. ECNU-45 and ECNU-46 are the first reported examples of pure silicate zeolites with pores larger than 22-rings. Our findings showcase detailed changes at six distinct tetrahedral Si sites, involving atom displacement, addition, and removal of framework atoms through bond breakage and formation. This work not only presents the discovery of novel zeolites but also provides unprecedented atomic-level insights into the dynamic processes of topotactic reactions. Our results have significant implications for advancing materials engineering and understanding complex solid-state reactions at an atomic scale.

Abstract:A new germanosilicate zeolite named SCM-15 (Sinopec Composite Material No. 15), the first zeolite containing a 3-dimensional (3D) channel system with interconnected 12-, 12-, and 10-ring channels (pore sizes: 6.1×7.2, 6.1×7.4, and 5.2×5.9 Å), has been synthesized using neutral 4-pyrrolidinopyridine as organic structure-directing agents (OSDAs). Its structure has been determined by combining single-crystal electron diffraction (SCED) and synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction (SPXD) data. The unique open framework structure of SCM-15 is related to that of FOS-5 (BEC), ITQ-7 (ISV), PKU-16 (POS), ITQ-26 (IWS), ITQ-21, Beta polymorph B, and SU-78B, since all these framework structures can be constructed from similar chains which are connected through shared 4-ring or double 4-ring (d4r) units. Based on this relation, six topologically reasonable 3D large or extra-large pore hypothetical zeolites are predicted.
Dual Organic-Structure Directing Agents in the Synthesis of High-Silica MOR Zeolite: Cooperation or Competition?

Abstract:Constructing a high-silica framework of a given zeolite topology via a conventional hydrothermal synthetic strategy is still an open question. In this work, In this contribution, we report the high-silica MOR zeolite (Si/Al ratio: ∼30) was fabricated by a dual OSDA combination strategy at a fixed alkalinity (OH−/SiO2) ratio of around 0.4. Additionally, we found that bulky TEA+ cation and smaller neutral heterocycle molecules severed as the pore-filling agent and cooperatively squeeze the occupation of sodium cation resulting in the low sodium content of high-silica MOR zeolite. However, such cooperative behavior can be easily spoiled by the high alkalinity ratio above 0.5. With the increment of the alkalinity ratio, the sodium cations can retake the occupied sites and facilitate the MOR framework with a relatively low Si/Al ratio. As unveiled by the powder X-ray diffraction crystallography and combined spectroscopy strategies, the nature of different dual OSDA combinations occluded in the high-silica MOR zeolite with deduced aluminum enriched T sites provide the reference for the forthcoming target design of zeotype catalysts.
