Abstract:Since the price of oil may increase in the world, coal as a main energy source will become more attractive in the near future. CS{sub 2} exists in various feedstocks based on coal. CS{sub 2} however can greatly reduce the catalytic activity and lifetimes of some catalysts applied in down stream processes. The elimination of CS{sub 2} from the gases becomes increasingly necessary. Publications about the mechanism of CS{sub 2} hydrolysis is reported only rarely. The structure of adsorbed species and different adsorption mechanisms for CS{sub 2} on alumina studied by in-situ FTIR are put forward in this paper. It was found that weak chemical adsorption and strong chemical adsorption of CS{sub 2} on the surface of catalysts occur. The results show that the CS{sub 2} hydrolysis follows the Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism from studying the FTIR spectra of CS{sub 2} and H{sub 2}O coadsorbed over the surface of catalysts. COS, as matter of the fact, can be considered to be the surface reaction intermediate during CS{sub 2} hydrolysis in the temperature range from 45--140.
