Integrating these systems on a photonic chip would revolutionize instrumentation, time keeping, spectroscopy, navigation and potentially create new mass-market applications. A key element of such a system-on-a-chip will be a mode-locked comb that can be self-referenced. The recent demonstration of soliton pulses from a microresonator has placed this goal within reach. However, to provide the requisite link between microwave and optical rate signals soliton generation must occur within the bandwidth of electronic devices. So far this is possible in crytalline devices, but not chip-based devices. Here, a monolithic comb that generates electronic-rate soliton pulses is demonstrated.

Abstract:Frequency combs are having a broad impact on science and technology because they provide a way to coherently link radio/microwave-rate electrical signals with optical-rate signals derived from lasers and atomic transitions. Integrating these systems on a photonic chip would revolutionize instrumentation, time keeping, spectroscopy, navigation, and potentially create new mass-market applications. A key element of such a system-on-a-chip will be a mode-locked comb that can be self-referenced. The recent demonstration of soliton mode locking in crystalline and silicon nitride microresonators has provided a way to both mode lock and generate femtosecond time-scale pulses. Here, soliton mode locking is demonstrated in high-Q silica resonators. The resonators produce low-phase-noise soliton pulse trains at readily detectable pulse rates—two essential properties for the operation of frequency combs. A method for the long-term stabilization of the solitons is also demonstrated, and is used to test the theoretical dependence of the comb power, efficiency, and soliton existence power on the pulse width. The influence of the Raman process on the soliton existence power and efficiency is also observed. The resonators are microfabricated on silicon chips and feature reproducible modal properties required for soliton formation. A low-noise and detectable pulse rate soliton frequency comb on a chip is a significant step towards a fully integrated frequency comb system.

Abstract:Soliton microcombs are a promising new approach for photonic-based microwave signal synthesis. To date, however, the tuning rate has been limited in microcombs. Here, we demonstrate the first microwave-rate soliton microcomb whose repetition rate can be tuned at a high speed. By integrating an electro-optic modulation element into a lithium niobate comb microresonator, a modulation bandwidth up to 75 MHz and a continuous frequency modulation rate up to 5.0 × 10 14 Hz/s are achieved, several orders-of-magnitude faster than existing microcomb technology. The device offers a significant bandwidth of up to tens of gigahertz for locking the repetition rate to an external microwave reference, enabling both direct injection locking and feedback locking to the comb resonator itself without involving external modulation. These features are especially useful for disciplining an optical voltage-controlled oscillator to a long-term reference and the demonstrated fast repetition rate control is expected to have a profound impact on all applications of frequency combs.

Abstract:Microwave photonic technologies, which upshift the carrier into the optical domain to facilitate the generation and processing of ultrawide-band electronic signals at vastly reduced fractional bandwidths, have the potential to achieve superior performance compared to conventional electronics for targeted functions. For microwave photonic applications such as filters, coherent radars, subnoise detection, optical communications and low-noise microwave generation, frequency combs are key building blocks. By virtue of soliton microcombs, frequency combs can now be built using CMOS compatible photonic integrated circuits, operated with low power and noise, and have already been employed in system-level demonstrations. Yet, currently developed photonic integrated microcombs all operate with repetition rates significantly beyond those that conventional electronics can detect and process, compounding their use in microwave photonics. Here we demonstrate integrated soliton microcombs operating in two widely employed microwave bands, X- and K-band. These devices can produce more than 300 comb lines within the 3-dB-bandwidth, and generate microwave signals featuring phase noise levels below 105 dBc/Hz (140 dBc/Hz) at 10 kHz (1 MHz) offset frequency, comparable to modern electronic microwave synthesizers. In addition, the soliton pulse stream can be injection-locked to a microwave signal, enabling actuator-free repetition rate stabilization, tuning and microwave spectral purification, at power levels compatible with silicon-based lasers (<150 mW). Our results establish photonic integrated soliton microcombs as viable integrated low-noise microwave synthesizers. Further, the low repetition rates are critical for future dense WDM channel generation schemes, and can significantly reduce the system complexity of photonic integrated frequency synthesizers and atomic clocks.

Abstract:Mode-locked ultrashort pulse sources with a repetition rate of up to several tens of gigahertz greatly facilitate versatile photonic applications such as frequency synthesis, metrology, radar, and optical communications. Dissipative Kerr soliton microcombs provide an attractive solution as a broadband, high-repetition-rate compact laser system in this context. However, its operation usually requires sophisticated pump laser control to initiate and stabilize the soliton microcombs, particularly in millimeter-sized ultrahigh-Q whispering-gallery resonators. Here, we realize a mechanically actuated soliton microcomb oscillator with a microwave repetition rate of 15 GHz. This enables direct soliton initiation, long-term stabilization, and fine tuning, where the operation now lifts the prerequisite pump laser tunability that must be relaxed if the technology is to be widely used outside the laboratory environment. We reveal the prospects for using this method with a wide range of applications that would benefit from mechanical soliton actuation such as optical clocks, spectral extension, and dual-comb spectroscopy.

Abstract:Microresonator soliton frequency combs offer unique flexibility in synthesizing microwaves over a wide range of frequencies, while their phase noise is currently limited by thermal noise. Enlarging the mode volume would mitigate thermal noise but also raise power consumption. Here, we fabricate optical microresonators with large mode volumes by lathe machining high-purity fiber preforms. Quality factors greater than 4 billion result in a record-low threshold power of 110 µW to initiate comb operation in millimeter-sized devices. The synthesized X-band microwaves with an absolute phase noise level of − 107 ( − 133 ) d B c / H z at 1(10) kHz offset frequency feature considerable noise reduction compared to other silica-microresonator-based oscillators, which are further used to cope with high-speed data links as carrier waves. Our work illuminates a pathway toward low-noise photonic microwave generation as well as the quantum regime of soliton microcombs.

Abstract:Frequency combs have applications that extend from the ultra-violet into the mid-infrared bands. Microcombs, a miniature and often semiconductor-chip-based device, can potentially access most of these applications, but are currently more limited in spectral reach. Here, we demonstrate mode-locked silica microcombs with emission near the edge of the visible spectrum. By using both geometrical and mode-hybridization dispersion control, devices are engineered for soliton generation while also maintaining optical Q factors as high as 80 million. Electronics-bandwidth-compatible (20 GHz) soliton mode locking is achieved with low pumping powers (parametric oscillation threshold powers as low as 5.4 mW). These are the shortest wavelength soliton microcombs demonstrated to date and could be used in miniature optical clocks. The results should also extend to visible and potentially ultra-violet bands.

Abstract:Generation and processing of millimeter-wave (MMW) signal based on photonic technologies is a new trend. A simple and effective optical technique to generate 60 GHz millimeter-wave signal by frequency quadrupling is proposed and demonstrated. In this approach, the frequency quadrupling efficiency is greatly improved by a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) fiber ring laser with 2nd-order rational harmonic mode-locking and a Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) which is biased at odd-order optical modulation side-bands suppressing state. A center-wavelength tunable comb filter outside the ring laser is tuned to select the optical sidebands separated by 60GHz. The result shows that the power ratio between quadruple-frequency signal and double-frequency signal is improved at least 30 dB with the mode-locking ring laser when the modulation depth is less than 0.4 and the phase noise of the 60GHz signal generated is better than -75dBc/Hz at 1-kHz offset. The key advantage of the technique is that a high-frequency MMW signal can be generated with high efficiency by a low power microwave signal.

Abstract:The mode-locked microcomb offers a unique and compact solution for photonics applications, ranging from the optical communications, the optical clock, optical ranging, the precision spectroscopy, novel quantum light source, to photonic artificial intelligence. However, the photonic micro-structures are suffering from the perturbations arising from environment thermal noises and also laser-induced nonlinear effects, leading to the frequency instability of the generated comb. Here, a universal mechanism for fully stabilizing the microcomb is proposed and experimentally verified. By incorporating two global tuning approaches and the autonomous thermal locking mechanism, the pump laser frequency and repetition rate of the microcomb can be controlled independently in real-time without interrupting the microcomb generation. The high stability and controllability of the microcomb frequency enables its application in wavelength measurement with a precision of about 1 kHz. The approach for the full control of comb frequency could be applied in various microcomb platforms, and improve their performances in timing, spectroscopy, and sensing.

Abstract:Microsonator-based photonic microwave oscillators can deliver ultralow phase noise with a compact form factor and a low power consumption. Here, we report on a low noise microwave oscillator at 10 GHz using a chip-based silica wedge soliton microcomb. By operating in a quiet point, the phase noise at the offset frequency of 100 kHz (10 kHz) can reach -143 dBc/Hz (-132 dBc/Hz). By measuring the phase noise under different amplified microcomb powers, we find that the phase noise at the offset frequencies above 1 MHz are limited by the photodetector, instead of shot noise. The phase noise for low offset frequencies is suppressed by injection locking to a high quality commercial electric oscillator. When locked, the soliton microcomb oscillator can purify the electric oscillator more than 10 dB at the offset frequency of hundreds of kHz. Different from previous results in a MgF $_{2}$ microcavity, no deterioration of the phase noise at high offset frequencies due to injection locking is observed. The injection locking is relatively loose for the silica mcirocomb operating in the quiet point, with phase noise reduction only observed below an offset frequency of kHz. Our measurements show how the injection locking impacts the low noise silica soliton oscillators.

Abstract:Soliton mode locking and femtosecond pulse generation have recently been demonstrated in high-Q optical microcavities and provide a new way to miniaturize frequency comb systems, as well as create integrated comb systems on a chip. However, triggering the mode-locking process is complicated by a well-known thermal hysteresis that can destabilize the solitons. Moreover, on a longer time scale, thermal drifting of the cavity resonant frequency relative to the pumping frequency causes loss of mode locking. In this Letter, an active feedback method is used both to capture specific soliton states and to stabilize the states indefinitely. The capture and stabilization method provides a reliable way to overcome thermal effects during soliton formation and to excite a desired number of circulating cavity solitons. It is also used to demonstrate a low pumping power of 22 mW for generation of microwave-repetition-rate solitons on a chip.

Abstract:Soliton microcombs constitute chip-scale optical frequency combs, and have the potential to impact a myriad of applications from frequency synthesis and telecommunications to astronomy. The requirement on external driving lasers has been significantly relaxed with the demonstration of soliton formation via self-injection locking of the pump laser to the microresonator. Yet to date, the dynamics of this process has not been fully understood. Prior models of self-injection locking were not able to explain sufficiently large detunings, crucial for soliton formation. Here we develop a theoretical model of self-injection locking to a nonlinear microresonator (nonlinear self-injection locking) for the first time and show that self- and cross-phase modulation of the clockwise and counter-clockwise light enables soliton formation. Using an integrated soliton microcomb of directly detectable 30 GHz repetition rate, consisting of a DFB laser self-injection-locked to a Si3N4 microresonator chip, we study the soliton formation dynamics via self-injection locking, as well as the repetition rate evolution, experimentally. We reveal that Kerr nonlinearity in microresonator significantly modifies locking dynamics, making laser emission frequency red detuned. We propose and implement a novel technique for measurements of the nonlinear frequency tuning curve and concurrent observation of microcomb states switching in real time.

Abstract:Numerous modern technologies are reliant on the low-phase noise and exquisite timing stability of microwave signals. Substantial progress has been made in the field of microwave photonics, whereby low noise microwave signals are generated by the down-conversion of ultra-stable optical references using a frequency comb. Such systems, however, are constructed with bulk or fiber optics and are difficult to further reduce in size and power consumption. Our work addresses this challenge by leveraging advances in integrated photonics to demonstrate low-noise microwave generation via two-point optical frequency division. Narrow linewidth self-injection locked integrated lasers are stabilized to a miniature Fabry-Pérot cavity, and the frequency gap between the lasers is divided with an efficient dark-soliton frequency comb. The stabilized output of the microcomb is photodetected to produce a microwave signal at 20 GHz with phase noise of -96 dBc/Hz at 100 Hz offset frequency that decreases to -135 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz offset--values which are unprecedented for an integrated photonic system. All photonic components can be heterogeneously integrated on a single chip, providing a significant advance for the application of photonics to high-precision navigation, communication and timing systems.

Abstract:We demonstrate theoretically that robust mode-locking can be achieved on a semiconductor chip with a waveguide array architecture. The waveguide arrays are used as an ideal saturable absorption mechanism for initial noise start-up as well as pulse shaping and stabilization. The cavity gain is provided by an injection current and forward biasing of the semiconductor material. The technology can be integrated directly with semiconductor architectures and technologies, thus allowing for the potential of an on-chip, broadband device.

Abstract:Low-noise microwave oscillators are cornerstones for wireless communication, radar and clocks. Optical frequency combs have enabled photonic microwaves with unrivalled noise performance and bandwidth. Emerging interest is to generate microwaves using chip-based frequency combs, namely microcombs. Here, we demonstrate the first, fully integrated, microcomb-based, microwave oscillator chip. The chip, powered by a microelectronic circuit, leverages hybrid integration of a DFB laser, a nonlinear microresonator, and a high-speed photodetector. Each component represents the best of its own class, yet allows large-volume manufacturing with low cost in CMOS foundries. The hybrid chip outputs an ultralow-noise laser of 6.9 Hz linewidth, a microcomb of 10.7 GHz repetition rate, and a 10.7 GHz microwave of 6.3 mHz linewidth -- all three in one entity of 76 mm$^2$ size.The microwave phase noise reaches -75/-105/-130 dBc/Hz at 1/10/100 kHz Fourier offset frequency. Our results can reinvigorate our information society for communication, sensing, timing and precision measurement.
