Abstract:By using a continuous-wave Ti:sapphire laser as a pumping source, we demonstrated a passively Q-switched Yb:YAG laser at room temperature with Cr(4+):YAG as the saturable absorber. We achieved an average output power of as much as 55 mW at 1.03 mum with a pulse width (FWHM) as short as 350 ns. The initial transmission of the Cr(4+):YAG has an effect on the pulse duration (FWHM) and the repetition rate of the Yb:YAG passively Q-switched laser. The Yb:YAG crystal can be a most promising passively Q-switched laser crystal for compact, efficient, solid-state lasers.

Abstract:We report on a highly efficient, compact, passively Q-switched Yb:KLu(WO4)2 laser, with few-layer MoS2 or WS2 acting as saturable absorber. A maximum output power of 2.45 W was generated at a repetition rate of 2.52 MHz, with 6.49 W of pump power absorbed in passively Q-switched operation induced by MoS2; the largest pulse energy, shortest duration, and highest peak power were, respectively, 1.27 μJ, 43 ns, and 29.5 W. With WS2 as saturable absorber, the output power attainable in stable Q-switched operation was 1.87 W, produced with an optical-to-optical efficiency of 37% and a slope efficiency of 71%. The minimum pulse duration obtained was 39 ns; while the largest pulse energy and highest peak power were 1.19 μJ and 30.5 W.

Abstract:In the present work, we report the first Q-switching operation at ∼ 2.3 µm based on a Tm3+:YAlO3 (Tm:YAP) crystalline gain medium and a zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) saturable absorber. The ZIF-67 nanomaterials were designed and fabricated to possess a small size in the range from 200 to 500 nm in order to the reduce the possible scattering when working as the nonlinear optical modulator. Based on the conventional Z-scan technique with a home-made excitation source at 2275 nm, the modulation depth of ZIF-67 saturable absorber was determined as large as 6.9%, indicating the great potential in the short Q-switching pulse generation. With an output coupler (OC) of T = 0.5%, a maximum output power of 455 mW was achieved with a slope efficiency of 27%. For the Q-switching operation at 2.3 µm with ZIF-67 saturable absorber, the highest output power of 220 mW and a minimum pulse duration of 220 ns were obtained with a pulse repetition rate of 95 kHz at 2271.7 nm.

Abstract:We report on a passively Q -switched 2 μm Ho :YAG ceramic laser, using pure GaAs as a saturable absorber. At an absorbed pump power of 1.28 W, the highest pulse repetition rate, shortest pulse width, largest single pulse energy, and highest peak power are measured to be 295 kHz, 83 ns, 1.49 μJ and 17.95 W, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first 2 μm passively Q -switched laser with a pure GaAs absorber, the three-photon absorption is believed to play an important role in the saturable absorption process.

Abstract:We demonstrate a 980-nm Q-switch Yb-doped photonic crystal fiber laser by a multilayer molybdenum sulfide polymer composite as the broadband saturable absorber which is prepared by the chemical vapor deposition method. We achieve passively Q-switching operations at 978 nm with the pulse width of 2.7 and 0.63 μs, corresponding to the repetition rate of 212 and 221 kHz, respectively. The maximum output power is 127 mW. It is the first time that MoS 2 Q-switched Yb-doped photonic crystal fiber laser at 980 nm is demonstrated. The experimental results show that few-layer MoS 2 is a promising broadband saturable absorber material.

Abstract:We report on an efficient Yb:KLu(WO4)2 laser that could be passively Q-switched with 2D MoTe2 serving as saturable absorber. Stable repetitively Q-switched operation was realized with the resonator output coupling changed over a wide range from 10 to 90%, producing a maximum output power of 2.06 W at a repetition rate of 2.18 MHz with an optical-to-optical efficiency of 35%, while the slope efficiency was 56%. The largest pulse energy, shortest duration, and highest peak power achieved were 1.3 µJ, 36 ns, and 36.1 W, respectively.

Abstract:In this paper, TaSe 2 material was prepared and used as a saturable absorber (SA) to modulate a Tm:YAP laser. Under the continuous-wave mode, an 18.31 W diode laser was used to pump the Tm:YAP crystal, and an output power of 6.22 W was achieved at 1993.1 nm with an optical–optical conversion efficiency of 33.9%. Under the passively Q-switched mode, the Tm:YAP pulse laser was modulated by a TaSe 2 -based SA, and a 2.8 W average power and a 440 ns pulse width at 73.15 kHz were obtained at 1988.4 nm, corresponding to an optical–optical conversion efficiency of 15.2% and a per pulse energy of 38.2 μJ.

Abstract:All-solid-state Tm lasers have a wider wavelength range and higher output power compared to other types of lasers. In this work, we demonstrate an all-solid-state, high repetition, Tm:YAP laser Q-switched by a graphdiyne (GDY) saturable absorber. The high-quality optical nonlinear material GDY, synthesized by a cross-coupling method, exhibits a strong nonlinear optical response. The application of GDY as a saturable absorber in the passively Q-switched (PQS) Tm:YAP of an all-solid-state laser has been realized with the shortest pulse duration of ~785 ns and repetition frequency of ~199.6 kHz at a central wavelength of 1985.8 nm. This represents the shortest pulse duration and the highest repetition frequency achieved from GDY in a solid-state Tm laser to date. Our work demonstrates the remarkable nonlinear optical properties of GDY, which holds promising potential in the field of optoelectronics.

Abstract:We report on passive Q-switching action induced by a few-layer MoTe2 saturable absorber in an Yb:YCa4O(BO3)3 (Yb:YCOB) microchip laser. With a sapphire-based few-layer MoTe2 incorporated into the 4 mm long plane-parallel resonator of the Yb:YCOB microchip laser, efficient stable passively Q-switched operation was achieved under output couplings of 40%-70%, producing, at an incident pump power of 5.0 W, an average output power of 1.58 W at a repetition rate of 704 kHz with a slope efficiency of 36%; the pulse energy and peak power were respectively 2.25 μJ and 40.8 W, while the shortest pulse duration obtained was 52 ns.

Abstract:Based on a high-quality WSe2 film prepared by the ultrasound-assisted liquid phase exfoliation (UALPE) method, a passively Q-switched all-solid-state Tm:YLF laser at 2 mu m with high peak power was presented. The laser characteristics versus the pump power were investigated experimentally. Under the pump power of 8.84 W, the maximum single pulse energy of 12.8 mu J and peak power of 30 W were obtained, corresponding to the perfect pulse duration and maximum repetition rate of 427 ns and 82 kHz, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first presentation of WSe2-SA employed in a solid-state Q-switched crystalline laser at 2 mu m.

Abstract:We report on efficient passively Q-switched operation of an Yb:GdCa4O(BO3)(3) laser induced by a few-layer Bi2Te3 topological insulator saturable absorber. A maximum average output power of 2.38 W is produced at a repetition rate of 325kHz with a slope efficiency of 36%; the resulting pulse energy, duration, and peak power are respectively 7.32 mu J, 104 ns, and 70.4 W. The results obtained in our work demonstrate the potential of Yb:GdCa4O(BO3)(3) crystal in the development of passively Q-switched solid-state lasers using 2D topological insulator saturable absorbers.

Abstract:A novel nickel–cobalt (NiCo)-layered double hydroxide (LDH) saturable absorber (SA) was fabricated by the liquid-phase exfoliation method and applied as the laser modulator for the first time. We successfully investigated the laser modulation performance of the NiCo-LDH SA at 2 µm with a passively Q-switched (PQS) Tm:YAG ceramic laser. The narrowest pulse width of 322.6 ns was obtained, corresponding to a pulse repetition frequency of 119.3 kHz and a single pulse energy of 2.10 µJ. As far as we know, this is the shortest pulse width of PQS Tm:YAG crystal and ceramic lasers with two-dimensional materials saturable absorber. The results show that NiCo-LDH SA is a promising candidate for the application of laser modulators at 2 µm.

Abstract:In recent years, 2D Cr 2 S 3 has earned lots of attentions in the fields of photocatalysis and photodetector due to its outstanding environmental stability and high responsivity. However, up to now, the optical properties of 2D Cr 2 S 3 , especially the NLO properties of Cr 2 S 3 have been rarely studied. In this work, the NLO properties of Cr 2 S 3 -nanoparticles in 1 μm have been investigated by using open-aperture (OA) Z-scan method. The nonlinear absorption coefficient (β), modulation depth and saturable intensity are measured to be -2.6 cm/GW, 11.5%, and 0.115 MW/cm 2 , respectively. Furthermore, by depositing Cr 2 S 3 nanoparticles on a side-polished fiber and inserting into a ytterbium-doped fiber laser (YDFL) cavity, stable mode-locking laser and Q-switching laser with a pulse width of 10.2 ns and 2.95 μs are achieved, respectively. These results demonstrate that Cr 2 S 3 is a promising saturable absorber (SA) for the fiber laser applications.

Abstract:The passive Q-switching performance of an Yb:LaCa4O(BO3)(3) crystal laser was investigated for the first time to our knowledge. Stable repetitively pulsed laser action was demonstrated with a 2D MoTe2 saturable absorber under high output couplings ranging from 70% up to 95%. A maximum pulsed output power of 2.11 W was produced at a repetition rate of 357 kHz, with a slope efficiency of 32% in terms of incident pump power. The largest pulse energy, minimum pulse duration, and highest peak power achievable were, respectively, 6.6 mu J, 103 ns, and 52.4 W. Our work suggests that this relatively new monoclinic oxyborate crystal may be more advantageous over most of other Yb-ion materials in making high-energy pulsed lasers passively Q-switched with 2D saturable absorbers.

Abstract:We report an efficient high-power Yb:YCa4O(BO3)3 laser that was passively Q-switched by a few-layer WS2 saturable absorber. A maximum average output power of 4.05 W was produced at a pulse repetition rate of 606 kHz, with an optical-to-optical efficiency of 40.5% and a slope efficiency of 47%. The resulting pulse energy, duration, and peak power were 6.67 mu J, 66 ns, and 101 W, respectively. Our work demonstrates the great potential of few-layer WS2 and other 2D transition metal dichalcogenides as saturable absorbers for developing high-power, high-repetition-rate, nanosecond, pulsed solid-state lasers.

Abstract:We report on a diode end-pumped passively Q-switched Nd:YAG ceramic laser. By using a Cr4+:YAG single crystal with an 80% initial transmission as the saturable absorber, stable Q-switched pulses with a 126-μJ pulse energy, a 12-ns pulse width, and an 8.4-kHz pulse repetition rate have been obtained. The Q-switching performance of the laser under different saturable absorption strengths and output couplings was experimentally investigated.
