Abstract:In this article we propose and study finite reversible nearest particle systems in inhomogeneous and random environments. Using the Dirichlet principle and the ergodic theorem we prove that a finite reversible nearest particle system in a random environment determined by an i.i.d. sequence Ai survives if E logAi > 0 and dies out if EAi 1.

Abstract:We study a one-parameter family of attractive reversible nearest particle systems on a finite interval. As the length of the interval increases, the time at which the nearest particle system first hits the empty set increases from logarithmic to exponential depending on the intensity of interaction. In the critical case, the first hitting time is polynomial in the interval length.

Abstract:The random walk in Dirichlet environment is a random walk in random environment where the transition probabilities are independent Dirichlet random variables. This random walk exhibits a property of statistical invariance by time-reversal which leads to several results. More precisely, a time-reversed random walk in Dirichlet environment (with null divergence) is also a random walk in random environment where the transition probabilities are independent Dirichlet random variables with different parameters. We show that on all graphs that satisfy a few weak assumptions, a random walk in random environment with independent transition probabilities and such that the transition probabilities of the time-reversed random walk in random environment are also independent is a random walk in Dirichlet environment.

Abstract:We study a class of models of i.i.d.~random environments in general dimensions $d\ge 2$, where each site is equipped randomly with an environment, and a parameter $p$ governs the frequency of certain environments that can act as a barrier. We show that many of these models (including some which are non-monotone in $p$) exhibit a sharp phase transition for the geometry of connected clusters as $p$ varies.

Abstract:We consider a ballistic random walk in an i.i.d. random environment that does not allow retreating in a certain fixed direction. Homogenization and regeneration techniques combine to prove a law of large numbers and an averaged invariance principle. The assumptions are non-nestling and $1+\e$ (resp.\ $2+\e$) moments for the step of the walk uniformly in the environment, for the law of large numbers (resp. invariance principles). We also investigate invariance principles under fixed environments, and invariance principles for the environment-dependent mean of the walk.

Abstract:In this paper we study random walks on dynamical random environments in $1 + 1$ dimensions. Assuming that the environment is invariant under space-time shifts and fulfills a mild mixing hypothesis, we establish a law of large numbers and a concentration inequality around the asymptotic speed. The mixing hypothesis imposes a polynomial decay rate of covariances on the environment with sufficiently high exponent but does not impose uniform mixing. Examples of environments for which our methods apply include the contact process and Markovian environments with a positive spectral gap, such as the East model. For the East model we also obtain that the distinguished zero satisfies a Law of Large Numbers with strictly positive speed.

Abstract:We consider random walks in dynamic random environments and propose a criterion which, if satisfied, allows to decompose the random walk trajectory into i.i.d. increments, and ultimately to prove limit theorems. The criterion involves the construction of a random field built from the environment, that has to satisfy a certain random Markov property along with some mixing estimates. We apply this criterion to correlated environments such as Boolean percolation and renewal chains featuring polynomial decay of correlations.

Abstract:We establish via a probabilistic approach the quenched invariance principle for a class of long range random walks in independent (but not necessarily identically distributed) balanced random environments, with the transition probability from $x$ to $y$ on average being comparable to $|x-y|^{-(d+\alpha)}$ with $\alpha\in (0,2]$. We use the martingale property to estimate exit time from balls and establish tightness of the scaled processes, and apply the uniqueness of the martingale problem to identify the limiting process. When $\alpha\in (0,1)$, our approach works even for non-balanced cases. When $\alpha=2$, under a diffusive with the logarithmic perturbation scaling, we show that the limit of scaled processes is a Brownian motion.

Abstract:We consider branching particle processes on discrete structures like the hypercube in a random fitness landscape (i.e., random branching/killing rates). The main question is about the location where the main part of the population sits at a late time, if the state space is large. For answering this, we take the expectation with respect to the migration (mutation) and the branching/killing (selection) mechanisms, for fixed rates. This is intimately connected with the parabolic Anderson model, the heat equation with random potential, a model that is of interest in mathematical physics because of the observed prominent effect of intermittency (local concentration of the mass of the solution in small islands). We present several advances in the investigation of this effect, also related to questions inspired from biology.

One of the main techniques involved is a duality argument.

Abstract:We consider a continuous-time branching random walk on $\mathbb{Z}$ in a random non homogeneous environment. Particles can walk on the lattice points or disappear with random intensities. The process starts with one particle at initial time $t=0$. It can walk on the lattice points or disappear with a random intensity until it reach the point, where initial particle can split into two offspring. This lattice point we call reproduction source. The offspring of the initial particle evolve according to the same law, independently of each other and the entire prehistory. The aim of the paper is to study the conditions for the presence of exponential growth of the average number of particle at an every lattice point. For this purpose we investigate the spectrum of the random evolution operator of the average particle numbers. We derive the condition under which there is exponential growth with probability one. We also study the process under the violation of this condition and present the lower and upper estimates for the probability of exponential growth.

We prove that the empirical velocity of the walker $X_t/t$ eventually lies in an arbitrary small ball around the annealed drift if we choose $\gamma$ large enough. This statement is thus a perturbation of the case $\gamma =+\infty$ where the environment is refreshed between each step of the walker. We extend three-way part of the results of HS15, where the environment was given by the $1$ dimensional exclusion process: $(i)$ We deal with any dimension $d\geq 1$; $(ii)$ Each particle of the interchange process carries a transition vector chosen according to an arbitrary law $\mu$; $(iii)$ We show that $X_t/t$ is not only in the same direction of the annealed drift, but that it is also close to it.

Abstract:We study a general class of random walks driven by a uniquely ergodic Markovian environment. Under a coupling condition on the environment we obtain strong ergodicity properties for the environment as seen from the position of the walker, that is, the environment process. We can transfer the rate of mixing in time of the environment to the rate of mixing of the environment process with a loss of at most polynomial order. Therefore the method is applicable to environments with sufficiently fast polynomial mixing. We obtain unique ergodicity of the environment process. Moreover, the unique invariant measure of the environment process depends continuously on the jump rates of the walker. As a consequence we obtain the law of large numbers and a central limit theorem with nondegenerate variance for the position of the walk.

Abstract:In this paper, we provide relations among the following properties: (a) the tail triviality of a probability measure $\mu$ on the configuration space ${\boldsymbol\Upsilon}$; (b) the finiteness of the $L^2$-transportation-type distance $\bar{\mathsf d}_{\boldsymbol\Upsilon}$; (c) the irreducibility of $\mu$-symmetric Dirichlet forms on ${\boldsymbol\Upsilon}$. As an application, we obtain the ergodicity (i.e., the convergence to the equilibrium) of interacting infinite diffusions having logarithmic interaction arisen from determinantal/permanental point processes including $\mathrm{sine}_{2}$, $\mathrm{Airy}_{2}$, $\mathrm{Bessel}_{\alpha, 2}$ ($\alpha \ge 1$), and $\mathrm{Ginibre}$ point processes, in particular, the case of unlabelled Dyson Brownian motion is covered. For the proof, the number rigidity of point processes in the sense of Ghosh--Peres plays a key role.

Abstract:Abridged abstract: Inert interactions between randomly moving entities and spatial disorder play a crucial role in quantifying the diffusive properties of a system. These interactions affect only the movement of the entities, and examples range from molecules advancing along dendritic spines to anti-predator displacements of animals due to sparse vegetation. Despite the prevalence of such systems, a general framework to model the movement explicitly in the presence of spatial heterogeneities is missing. Here, we tackle this challenge and develop an analytic theory to model inert particle-environment interactions in domains of arbitrary shape and dimensions. We use a discrete space formulation which allows us to model the interactions between an agent and the environment as perturbed dynamics between lattice sites. Interactions from spatial disorder, such as impenetrable and permeable obstacles or regions of increased or decreased diffusivity, as well as many others, can be modelled using our framework. We provide exact expressions for the generating function of the occupation probability of the diffusing particle and related transport quantities such as first-passage, return and exit probabilities and their respective means. We uncover a surprising property, the disorder indifference phenomenon of the mean first-passage time in the presence of a permeable barrier in quasi-1D systems. We demonstrate the widespread applicability of our formalism by considering three examples that span across scales and disciplines. (1) We explore an enhancement strategy of transdermal drug delivery. (2) We associate the disorder with a decision-making process of an animal to study thigmotaxis. (3) We illustrate the use of spatial heterogeneities to model inert interactions between particles by modelling the search for a promoter region on the DNA by transcription factors during gene transcription.
