Abstract:We consider a random walk with transition probabilities weakly dependent on an environment with a deterministic, but strongly chaotic, evolution. We prove that for almost all initial conditions of the environment the walk satisfies the CLT.

Abstract:We study a general class of random walks driven by a uniquely ergodic Markovian environment. Under a coupling condition on the environment we obtain strong ergodicity properties for the environment as seen from the position of the walker, that is, the environment process. We can transfer the rate of mixing in time of the environment to the rate of mixing of the environment process with a loss of at most polynomial order. Therefore the method is applicable to environments with sufficiently fast polynomial mixing. We obtain unique ergodicity of the environment process. Moreover, the unique invariant measure of the environment process depends continuously on the jump rates of the walker. As a consequence we obtain the law of large numbers and a central limit theorem with nondegenerate variance for the position of the walk.

Abstract:In this paper we study random walks on dynamical random environments in $1 + 1$ dimensions. Assuming that the environment is invariant under space-time shifts and fulfills a mild mixing hypothesis, we establish a law of large numbers and a concentration inequality around the asymptotic speed. The mixing hypothesis imposes a polynomial decay rate of covariances on the environment with sufficiently high exponent but does not impose uniform mixing. Examples of environments for which our methods apply include the contact process and Markovian environments with a positive spectral gap, such as the East model. For the East model we also obtain that the distinguished zero satisfies a Law of Large Numbers with strictly positive speed.

Abstract:The random walk in Dirichlet environment is a random walk in random environment where the transition probabilities are independent Dirichlet random variables. This random walk exhibits a property of statistical invariance by time-reversal which leads to several results. More precisely, a time-reversed random walk in Dirichlet environment (with null divergence) is also a random walk in random environment where the transition probabilities are independent Dirichlet random variables with different parameters. We show that on all graphs that satisfy a few weak assumptions, a random walk in random environment with independent transition probabilities and such that the transition probabilities of the time-reversed random walk in random environment are also independent is a random walk in Dirichlet environment.

Abstract:We consider random walks in a random environment of the type p0+γξz, where p0 denotes the transition probabilities of a stationary random walk on ℤd, to nearest neighbors, and ξz is an i.i.d. random perturbation. We give an explicit expansion, for small γ, of the asymptotic speed of the random walk under the annealed law, up to order 2. As an application, we construct, in dimension d≥2, a walk which goes faster than the stationary walk under the mean environment.

Abstract:A Random Walk in Changing Environment (RWCE) is a weighted random walk on a locally finite, connected graph $G$ with random, time-dependent edge-weights. This includes self-interacting random walks, where the edge-weights depend on the history of the process. In general, even the basic question of recurrence or transience for RWCEs is difficult, especially when the underlying graph contains cycles. In this note, we derive a condition for recurrence or transience that is too restrictive for classical RWCEs but instead works for any graph $G.$ Namely, we show that any bounded RWCE on $G$ with "slowly" changing edge-weights inherits the recurrence or transience of the initial weighted graph.

Abstract:We consider a ballistic random walk in an i.i.d. random environment that does not allow retreating in a certain fixed direction. Homogenization and regeneration techniques combine to prove a law of large numbers and an averaged invariance principle. The assumptions are non-nestling and $1+\e$ (resp.\ $2+\e$) moments for the step of the walk uniformly in the environment, for the law of large numbers (resp. invariance principles). We also investigate invariance principles under fixed environments, and invariance principles for the environment-dependent mean of the walk.

Abstract:We consider random walks in dynamic random environments and propose a criterion which, if satisfied, allows to decompose the random walk trajectory into i.i.d. increments, and ultimately to prove limit theorems. The criterion involves the construction of a random field built from the environment, that has to satisfy a certain random Markov property along with some mixing estimates. We apply this criterion to correlated environments such as Boolean percolation and renewal chains featuring polynomial decay of correlations.

Abstract:Let be a random walk with increments that belong (without centering) to the domain of attraction of an -stable law, that is, there exists a process such that , , as for some scaling constants . Assuming that and , we prove several conditional limit theorems for the distribution of the random variable given that and . These theorems supplement the assertions established by Caravenna and Chaumont in 2013. Abstract:In this paper, we study random walks evolving on Z in a dynamic random environment that we assume to have time correlations that decrease polynomially fast. We show a law of large numbers by generalizing methods already used for the nearest-neighbor framework to the finite-range one. This requires some new ideas to get around the absence of a monotonicity property that was crucial in the proof for the nearest-neighbour case. Our proof works both in discrete and continuous time.

Abstract:Consider $(1,2)$ random walk in random environment $\{X_n\}_{n\ge0}.$ In each step, the walk jumps at most a distance $2$ to the right or a distance $1$ to the left. For the walk transient to the right, it is proved that almost surely $\lim_{x\rightarrow\infty}\frac{\#\{X_n:\ 0\le X_n\le x,\ n\ge0\}}{x}=\theta$ for some $0<\theta<1.$ The result shows that the range of the walk covers only a linear proportion of the lattice of the positive half line. For the nearest neighbor random walk in random or non-random environment, this phenomenon could not appear in any circumstance.

Abstract:Deterministic walk in an excited random environment is a non-Markov integer-valued process $(X_n)_{n=0}^{\infty}$, whose jump at time $n$ depends on the number of visits to the site $X_n$. The environment can be understood as stacks of cookies on each site of $\mathbb Z$. Once all cookies are consumed at a given site, every subsequent visit will result in a walk taking a step according to the direction prescribed by the last consumed cookie. If each site has exactly one cookie, then the walk ends in a loop if it ever visits the same site twice. If the number of cookies per site is increased to two, the walk can visit a site infinitely many times and still not end in a loop. Nevertheless the moments of $X_n$ are sub-linear in $n$ and we establish monotonicity results on the environment that imply large deviations.

Abstract:We define a random walk of a particle in $\mathbb{R}^3$ where the space is rotating. The particle is not glued to the space and will collide with it at random times, resulting in changes in its velocity and direction. After many collisions, the random walk starts to have some asymptotic behaviors inherited from the movement of space. The paper will find the limit movement of the particle, and explain how the randomness of the random walk gives rise to the particle asymptotic deterministic movement.

We indicate when the trajectory characterizes the law of the environment, and we say how this law can be determined. Abstract:We consider a random walk in an i.i.d. random environment on Zd and study properties of its large deviation rate function at the origin. It was proved by Comets, Gantert and Zeitouni in dimension d = 1 in 1999 and later by Varadhan in dimensions d >= 2 in 2003 that, for uniformly elliptic i.i.d. random environments, the quenched and the averaged large deviation rate functions coincide at the origin. Here we provide a description of an atypical event realizing the correct quenched large deviation rate in the nestling and marginally nestling setting: the random walk seeks regions of space where the environment emulates the element in the convex hull of the support of the law of the environment at a site which minimizes the rate function. Periodic environments play a natural role in this description.
