Abstract:We study a one-parameter family of attractive reversible nearest particle systems on a finite interval. As the length of the interval increases, the time at which the nearest particle system first hits the empty set increases from logarithmic to exponential depending on the intensity of interaction. In the critical case, the first hitting time is polynomial in the interval length.

Abstract:In this article we propose and study finite reversible nearest particle systems in inhomogeneous and random environments. Using the Dirichlet principle and the ergodic theorem we prove that a finite reversible nearest particle system in a random environment determined by an i.i.d. sequence lambda(i) survives if E log lambda(i) > 0 and dies out if E-lambda(i) < 1. Some discussion is provided to show that both survival and extinction may happen when E log lambda(i) < 0 and E-lambda(i) > 1.

Abstract:The stability of a tree model is studied by randomly and preferentially selecting edges, including adding and removing edges, respectively. Firstly, the critical point of the phase transition in the percolation phenomenon is determined according to the number of connected components with different sizes. Then the feature of the phase transition is distinguished according to the distribution of the connected components with respect to a cluster size at the critical point. The Monte-Carlo numerical results show that the phase transitions in the evolving and fragmentation processes for the Erdos-Renyi tree are continuous. For the product rule tree, however, the evolving process undergoes a discontinuous phase transition, while the phase transition in the fragmentation process is continuous.

Abstract:We define a class of properties on random plane trees, which we call subtree additive properties, inspired by the combinatorics of certain biologically-interesting properties in a plane tree model of RNA secondary structure. The class of subtree additive properties includes the Wiener index and path length (total ladder distance and total ladder contact distance, respectively, in the biological context). We then investigate the asymptotic distribution of these subtree additive properties on a random plane tree distributed according to a Gibbs distribution arising from the Nearest Neighbor Thermodynamic Model for RNA secondary structure. We show that for any property in the class considered, there is a constant that translates the uniformly weighted random variable to the Gibbs distribution weighted random variable (and we provide the constant). We also relate the asymptotic distribution of another class of properties, which we call simple subtree additive properties, to the asymptotic distribution of the path length, both in the uniformly weighted case. The primary proof techniques in this paper come from analytic combinatorics, and most of our results follow from relating the moments of known and unknown distributions and showing that this is sufficient for convergence.

It is shown that there may exist more than one limiting measure for an Ising model on an infinite Cayley tree in both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic cases. Abstract:Monitored many-body systems fall broadly into two dynamical phases, ``entangling'' or ``disentangling'', separated by a transition as a function of the rate at which measurements are made on the system. Producing an analytical theory of this measurement-induced transition is an outstanding challenge. Recent work made progress in the context of tree tensor networks, which can be related to all-to-all quantum circuit dynamics with forced (postselected) measurement outcomes. So far, however, there are no exact solutions for dynamics of spin-1/2 degrees of freedom (qubits) with ``real'' measurements, whose outcome probabilities are sampled according to the Born rule. Here we define dynamical processes for qubits, with real measurements, that have a tree-like spacetime interaction graph, either collapsing or expanding the system as a function of time. The former case yields an exactly solvable measurement transition. We explore these processes analytically and numerically, exploiting the recursive structure of the tree. We compare the case of ``real'' measurements with the case of ``forced'' measurements. Both cases show a transition at a nontrivial value of the measurement strength, with the real measurement case exhibiting a smaller entangling phase. Both exhibit exponential scaling of the entanglement near the transition, but they differ in the value of a critical exponent. An intriguing difference between the two cases is that the real measurement case lies at the boundary between two distinct types of critical scaling. On the basis of our results we propose a protocol for realizing a measurement phase transition experimentally via an expansion process.

Abstract:A quantum phase transition may occur in a system at zero temperature when a controlling parameter is tuned towards a critical point. An important question is whether such a critical point exists in a particular system and how stable it is. Here, we identify the critical point of a quantum phase transition as a singular point in the affine algebraic variety of the characteristic equation for the Hamiltonian describing the system, with an unstable critical point being associated with an isolated singular point which has a finite Tjurina number. The theory is illustrated by studying a model system of zero-dimensional (finite) Heisenberg spin chain with an impurity, which exhibits a nontrivial first-order quantum phase transition. Both analytical and numerical calculations show that the quantum phase transition always exists when the impurity has a $Z_2$ symmetry but only remains in systems with an even number of spin sites when the $Z_2$ symmetry is broken.

Abstract:We consider a system of particles performing a one-dimensional dyadic branching Brownian motion with space-dependent branching rate, negative drift $-\mu$ and killed upon reaching $0$, starting with $N$ particles. More precisely, particles branch at rate $\rho/2$ in the interval $[0,1]$, for some $\rho>1$, and at rate $1/2$ in $(1,+\infty)$. The drift $\mu(\rho)$ is chosen in such a way that, heuristically, the system is critical in some sense: the number of particles stays roughly constant before it eventually dies out. This particle system can be seen as an analytically tractable model for fluctuating fronts, describing the internal mechanisms driving the invasion of a habitat by a cooperating population. Recent studies from Birzu, Hallatschek and Korolev suggest the existence of three classes of fluctuating fronts: pulled, semipushed and pushed fronts. Here, we rigorously verify and make precise this classification and focus on the semipushed regime. More precisely, we prove the existence of two critical values $1<\rho_1<\rho_2$ such that for all $\rho\in(\rho_1,\rho_2)$, there exists $\alpha(\rho)\in(1,2)$ such that the rescaled number of particles in the system converges to an $\alpha$-stable continuous-state branching process on the time scale $N^{\alpha-1}$ as $N$ goes to infinity. This complements previous results from Berestycki, Berestycki and Schweinsberg for the case $\rho=1$.

Abstract:We consider the apeirodic quantum Ising chains constructed with arbitrary substitution rules and initial or zero-order strings. It is shown that whether the spin systems can undergo a magnetic phase transition in the strict sense that the correlation length diverges at criticality depends not only on the substitution rules, but also on the initial strings. More precisely, when the characteristic polynomial associated with the substitution rule has a root of absolute value smaller than 1, the corresponding spin system can exhibit a phase transition analogous to the periodic case. On the other hand, when all roots of the above-mentioned characteristic polynomial are greater than or equal to 1 in absolute value, whether the spin system can exhibit a phase transition or behaves as a random Ising case may depend on the zero-order string.

Abstract:A remarkable connection has been established for antiferromagnetic 2-spin systems, including the Ising and hard-core models, showing that the computational complexity of approximating the partition function for graphs with maximum degree D undergoes a phase transition that coincides with the statistical physics uniqueness/non-uniqueness phase transition on the infinite D-regular tree. Despite this clear picture for 2-spin systems, there is little known for multi-spin systems. We present the first analog of the above inapproximability results for multi-spin systems. The main difficulty in previous inapproximability results was analyzing the behavior of the model on random D-regular bipartite graphs, which served as the gadget in the reduction. To this end one needs to understand the moments of the partition function. Our key contribution is connecting: (i) induced matrix norms, (ii) maxima of the expectation of the partition function, and (iii) attractive fixed points of the associated tree recursions (belief propagation). The view through matrix norms allows a simple and generic analysis of the second moment for any spin system on random D-regular bipartite graphs. This yields concentration results for any spin system in which one can analyze the maxima of the first moment. The connection to fixed points of the tree recursions enables an analysis of the maxima of the first moment for specific models of interest. For k-colorings we prove that for even k, in the tree non-uniqueness region (which corresponds to k<D) it is NP-hard, unless NP=RP, to approximate the number of colorings for triangle-free D-regular graphs. Our proof extends to the antiferromagnetic Potts model, and, in fact, to every antiferromagnetic model under a mild condition.

Abstract:We study topological properties of phase transition points of two topologically non-trivial $\mathbb{Z}_2$ classes (D and DIII) in one dimension by assigning a Berry phase defined on closed circles around the gap closing points in the parameter space of momentum and a transition driving parameter. While the topological property of the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ system is generally characterized by a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological invariant, we identify that it has a correspondence to the quantized Berry phase protected by the particle-hole symmetry, and then give a proper definition of Berry phase to the phase transition point. By applying our scheme to some specific models of class D and DIII, we demonstrate that the topological phase transition can be well characterized by the Berry phase of the transition point, which reflects the change of Berry phases of topologically different phases across the phase transition point.

Abstract:We study absorbing phase transitions in systems of branching annihilating random walkers and pair contact process with diffusion on a one dimensional ring, where the walkers hop to their nearest neighbor with a bias $\epsilon$. For $\epsilon=0$, three universality classes: directed percolation (DP), parity conserving (PC) and pair contact process with diffusion (PCPD) are typically observed in such systems. We find that the introduction of $\epsilon$ does not change the DP universality class but alters the other two universality classes. For non-zero $\epsilon$, the PCPD class crosses over to DP and the PC class changes to a new universality class.

Abstract:We consider random dynamics on the edges of a uniform Cayley tree with $n$ vertices, in which edges are either inflammable, fireproof, or burt. Every inflammable edge is replaced by a fireproof edge at unit rate, while fires start at smaller rate $n^{-\alpha}$ on each inflammable edge, then propagate through the neighboring inflammable edges and are only stopped at fireproof edges. A vertex is called fireproof when all its adjacent edges are fireproof. We show that as $n\to \infty$, the density of fireproof vertices converges to $1$ when $\alpha>1/2$, to $0$ when $\alpha<1/2$, and to some non-degenerate random variable when $\alpha=1/2$. We further study the connectivity of the fireproof forest, in particular the existence of a giant component.

Abstract:Recently for a class of critically intermittent random systems a phase transition was found for the finiteness of the absolutely continuous invariant measure. The systems for which this result holds are characterized by the interplay between a superexponentially attracting fixed point and an exponentially repelling fixed point. In this article we consider a closely related family of random systems with exponentially fast attraction to and polynomially fast repulsion from two fixed points, and show that such a phase transition still exists. The method of the proof however is different and relies on the construction of a suitable invariant set for the transfer operator.

Abstract:Consider branching Brownian motion in which we begin with one particle at the origin, particles independently move according to Brownian motion, and particles split into two at rate one. It is well-known that the right-most particle at time $t$ will be near $\sqrt{2} t$. Roberts considered the so-called consistent maximal displacement and showed that with high probability, there will be a particle at time $t$ whose ancestors stayed within a distance $ct^{1/3}$ of the curve $s \mapsto \sqrt{2} s$ for all $s \in [0, t]$, where $c = (3 \pi^2)^{1/3}/\sqrt{2}$. We consider the question of how close the trajectory of a particle can stay to the curve $s \mapsto (\sqrt{2} + \varepsilon) s$ for all $s \in [0, t]$, where $\varepsilon> 0$ is small. We find that there is a phase transition, with the behavior changing when $t$ is of the order $\varepsilon^{-3/2}$. This result allows us to determine, for branching Brownian motion in which particles have a drift to the left of $\sqrt{2} + \varepsilon$ and are killed at the origin, the position at which a particle needs to begin at time zero for there to be a high probability that the process avoids extinction until time $t$.

Abstract:It is well known that the branching process approach to the study of the random graph $G_{n,p}$ gives a very simple way of understanding the size of the giant component when it is fairly large (of order $\Theta(n)$). Here we show that a variant of this approach works all the way down to the phase transition: we use branching process arguments to give a simple new derivation of the asymptotic size of the largest component whenever $(np-1)^3n\to\infty$.
