Abstract:Rotationally resolved laser induced fluorescence and stimulated emission pumping Ã(2)A(1)-X̃(2)E spectra, along with pure rotational spectra in the 153-263 GHz region within the E(3/2) component of the ground state in asymmetrically deuterated methoxy radicals CH(2)DO and CHD(2)O have been observed. The combined data set allows for the direct measurement with high precision of the energy separation between the E(1/2) and E(3/2) components of the ground state and the energy separation between the parity stacks in the E(3/2) component of the ground state. The experimentally observed frequencies in both isotopologues are fit to an effective rotational Hamiltonian accounting for rotational and spin-rotational effects arising in a near-prolate asymmetric top molecule with dynamic Jahn-Teller distortion. Isotopic dependencies for the molecular parameters have been successfully implemented to aid the analysis of these very complex spectra. The analysis of the first and second order contributions to the effective values of molecular parameters has been extended to elucidate the physical significance of resulting molecular parameters. Comparisons of measured parameters, e.g., spin-orbit coupling, rotational and spin-rotation constants, are made among the 5 methoxy isotopologues for which data is now available. Comparisons of experimental results, including the derived geometric structure at both the C(3v) conical intersection and at the Jahn-Teller distorted minima, are made with quantum chemistry calculations.

Abstract:The infrared and optical absorption spectra of a fluorene-based two-photon chromophore AF50 (N,N-diphenyl-7-2-(4-pyridinyl)-ethenyl-9,9-di-n-decyl-9H-fluorene-2-amine) and its photo-oxidation products after ultra-violet exposure have been calculated using hybrid density functional theory. Our calculations have provided very useful information about the nature of the read/write process of AF50 and its possible final products.

Abstract:The oxy-substituted alkoxy radicals have attracted wide attention due to the increasing application of oxygenated volatile organic compounds as fuel additives and solvents. Direct detection of these intermediate radicals is desired for measuring the reaction rate and investigating the oxidation mechanism of organic compounds in the atmosphere. A charge-transfer excited state induced by CH3O substitution was identified in our previous study of 3-methoxy-1-propoxy radical [Xue, J. Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 2021, 23, 2586]. As the C-C bonds of chain alkoxy radicals can freely rotate, further studies are needed to understand the mechanism of this long-range charge-transfer effect. In this work, vibrational-resolved laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) spectra of 3- and 4-methoxycyclohexoxy radicals were obtained under jet-cooled conditions. A large red-shift of ∼454 cm-1 of the origin band was observed when the CH3O substituent moved from the δ site to the γ site of the cyclohexoxy radical. The LIF spectra are assigned to 3-cis (e, e) and 4-trans (e, e) conformers, respectively, with the assistance of structural optimization and electron excitation studies conducted at the CAM-B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) level of theory. Natural transition orbital analysis reveals that the intramolecular charge transfer from the C-O-C p orbital to the radical O p orbital in 3-methoxycyclohexoxy has a strong effect on the radical CO σ → O p excitation and hence results in a spectral change. On the other hand, the spectral effect of CH3O substitution almost vanishes at δ carbon. The results propose a through-bond interaction between CH3O and radical CO groups.

Abstract:We present a novel mid-infrared frequency-modulated Faraday rotation spectrometer (FM-FRS) for highly sensitive and high bandwidth detection of OH radicals in a photolysis reactor. High frequency modulation (up to 150 MHz) of the probe laser using an electro-optical modulator (EOM) was used to produce a modulation sideband on the laser output. An axial magnetic field was applied to the multi-pass Herriott cell, causing the linearly polarized light to undergo Faraday rotation. OH radicals were generated in the cell by photolyzing a mixture of ozone (O3) and water (H2O) with a UV laser pulse. The detection limit of OH reaches 6.8 x 108 molecule/cm3 (1 & sigma;, 0.2 ms) after 3 and falling to 8.0 x 107 molecule/cm3 after 100 event integrations. Relying on HITRAN absorption cross section and line shape data, this corresponds to minimum detectable fractional absorption (Amin) of 1.9 x 10-5 and 2.2 x 10-6, respectively. A higher signal-to-noise ratio and better long-term stability was achieved than with conventional FMS because the approach was immune to interference from diamagnetic species and residual amplitude modulation noise. To our knowledge, this work reports the first detection of OH in a photolysis reactor by FM-FRS in the mid-infrared region, a technique that will provide a new and alternative spectroscopic approach for the kinetic study of OH and other intermediate radicals.& COPY; 2023 Optica Publishing Group under the terms of the Optica Open Access Publishing Agreement

Abstract:The (2+1) resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI) spectra of the CF2Cl radicals, which are generated by a pulsed dc discharge,were investigated between 332 and 362nm.Two new Rydberg states,4s and 4p,were observed and indentified.The observed states and spectroscopic constants include 4s Rydberg state (band origin ν0—0=55371cm-1,ω3′ (CF2 scissors)=523±7cm-1,ω′4 (OPLA,i.e.,out-of-plane bending mode)=734±4cm-1) and 4p Rydberg state (ν0—0=57601.3cm-1,ω3′=552±10cm-1,ω4′=762±12cm-1).The quantum defect values of 4s and 4p Rydberg states were also estimated.It seems that the radical production by a pulsed dc discharge combined with PEMPI technique is a powerful tool to study the electronic state of radicals.

Abstract:The spectroscopy and dynamics of molecular excited states are important for the understanding of molecular electronic structures and the interactions among the electronic motion, nuclear vibration and molecular rotation. We have set up an IR-IR double optical resonance experimental apparatus to study the perturbation facilitated two photon resonance in alkaline dimers. Using an XUV laser and zero kinetic energy photoelectron spectroscopy we have studied the spectroscopy of various important molecular ions, such as the electronic-vibrational interaction in CH_3CN~+/CD_3CN~+ (the Jahn-Teller effect).

Abstract:We present the carbon and fluorine x-ray emission spectra of methane and the fluoromethanes (CH4-xFx, x = 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4), measured in high resolution. Relative x-ray emission intensities in dipole velocity and length gauges have been derived from the independent particle approximation using Hartree Fock ground state molecular orbitals. The results of the calculations are compared with the experimental spectra. In the experimental carbon (K-V) emission spectrum of CF4 We observe dipole-forbidden electronic transitions. We suggest that these transitions arise due to vibronic coupling, i.e. intensity is borrowed from the dipole-allowed transitions.

Abstract:Photoionization mass spectrometry as a powerful analytical method has been widely utilized and provided valuable insight in the field of gas-phase reactions. Here, a highly sensitive vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photoionization time-of-flight mass spectrometer combined with a microwave discharge generator and a fast flow tube reactor has been developed to study radical reactions of atmospheric and combustion interests. Two kinds of continuous light sources, the tunable VUV synchrotron radiation at Hefei, China for isomer-specific product detection and a commercial krypton discharge lamp for time-consuming kinetic measurements, are employed as photoionization sources in the apparatus. A multiplexed detection with high sensitivity (the limit of detection similar to 0.8 ppb) and high mass resolution (M/Delta M similar to 2100) has been approached. As representative examples, the self-reaction of the methyl radical, CH3, and the reaction of the methyl radical with molecular oxygen are studied and multiple species including reactive radicals and isomeric/isobaric products are detected and identified. In addition, some preliminary results related to the reaction kinetics are also presented.
Application of Laser Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy to the Measurement of Electric Dipole Moment of Free Radicals

Abstract:An intracavity CO laser magnetic resonance spectrometer with homogeneous de electric field applied via a pair of parallel Stark plates in the absorption cell is used to measure the electric dipole moments of free radicals. Taking advantage of the high sensitivity and high resolution of this technique and the Stark effect, highly-resolved saturated absorption spectra of the nu = 1 - 0 transition of (NO)-N-15-O-16 in the ground state X(2)Pi (3/2) have been successfully observed in the presence of a low electric field. The electric dipole moment of NO in the electronic ground state is determined as mu = 0.1566 +/- 14 D (Debye) from the analysis of the observed spectra, confirming that, combined with the Stark field, the laser magnetic resonance technique can be an effective and reliable approach for the precise measurement of electric dipole moments of free radicals, especially unstable ones.

Molecular structure and spectroscopic properties of two radicals of C4H2N: a DFT study

Abstract:Context: The cyano propargyl radical (CH2C3N and HC3HCN) is important reaction intermediate in both combustion flames and extraterrestrial environments such as cold molecular clouds and circumstellar envelopes of carbon stars. The acquisition of spectroscopic constants and anharmonic effect facilitates a more in-depth study of this radical. However, the data available in the literature do not allow the precise predictions for it in the interstellar medium. In this work, complete spectroscopic parameters as well as anharmonic constants of two radicals of C4H2N have been evaluated by different DFT methods. The calculated results show that it is reasonable to study the molecular spectroscopic properties of C4H2N by wB97XD/6-311++G theoretical level. On this basis, the sextic centrifugal distortion constants, anharmonic constants, vibration-rotation interaction constants, and so on are predicted for the study of high-precision rovibrational spectrum. In addition, the relationship between the anharmonic effect and vibration mode of CH2C3N and HC3HCN and their infrared spectroscopic characteristics are discussed. Methods: The calculation of the anharmonic force fields and spectroscopy properties was performed using B3LYP, B3PW91, CAM-B3LYP, and wB97XD methods combined with the 6-311++G and aug-ccpVTZ basis sets, respectively, by the Gaussian16 program suite. The IR spectra were performed with Multiwfn3.8.

Abstract:The electronic and infrared spectra of the 5-methyl-2-furanylmethyl (MFM) radical have been characterized under jet-cooled conditions in the gas phase. This resonance-stabilized radical is formed by H atom loss from one of the methyl groups of 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF), a promising second-generation biofuel. As a resonance-stabilized radical, it plays an important role in the flame chemistry of DMF. The D0-D1 transition was studied using two-color resonant two-photon ionization (2C-R2PI) spectroscopy. The electronic origin is in the middle of the visible spectrum (21934 cm(-1) = 455.9 nm) and is accompanied by Franck-Condon activity involving the hindered methyl rotor. The frequencies and intensities are fit to a one-dimensional methyl rotor potential, using the calculated form of the ground state potential. The methyl rotor reports sensitively on the local electronic environment and how it changes with electronic excitation, shifting from a preferred ground state orientation with one CH in-plane and anti to the furan oxygen, to an orientation in the excited state in which one CH group is axial to the plane of the furan ring. Ground and excited state alkyl CH stretch infrared spectra are recorded using resonant ion-dip infrared (RIDIR) spectroscopy, offering a complementary view of the methyl group and its response to electronic excitation. Dramatic changes in the CH stretch transitions with electronic state reflect the changing preference for the methyl group orientation.
