Abstract:A picosecond laser flash-heating technique is combined with ultrafast spectroscopic probe diagnostics to investigate the fundamental mechanisms of nanoenergetic material performance. The systems studied include Al nanoparticle aggregates in nitrocellulose (NC) oxidizer, size-selected Al nanoparticles in NC and in Teflon oxidizers, and nanoparticle thermites consisting of 30 nm Al and nanometric MoO 3 . The time-dependence of reactions between Al and the oxidizer on the picosecond to nanosecond time scales are studied using coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) to monitor oxidizer consumption. The time-dependence of energy release is measured using fast optical spectroscopy. The space-dependence of chemical reaction propagation over 100 to 1500 nm distances is studied using the average distance between nanoparticles as a ruler. The distance of reaction propagation from a flash-heated Al nanoparticle increases linearly with energy, which is explained by a hydrodynamic model.

Abstract:We have developed an efficient spectrometer capable of performing a wide variety of coherent multidimensional measurements at optical wavelengths. The two major components of the largely automated device are a spatial beam shaper which controls the beam geometry and a spatiotemporal pulse shaper which controls the temporal waveform of the femtosecond pulse in each beam. We describe how to construct, calibrate, and operate the device, and we discuss its limitations. We use the exciton states of a semiconductor nanostructure as a working example. A series of complex multidimensional spectra-displayed in amplitude and real parts-reveals increasingly intricate correlations among the excitons.

Abstract:A novel method is presented for quantitative two-dimensional temperature measurement in combustion gases. This method, namely spectrally resolved planar laser-induced fluorescence thermometry, utilizes a high-power, wavelength-tunable and narrow-linewidth CW laser to access the spectral lineshapes of a key combustion intermediate, the hydroxyl radical (OH), and enables high-fidelity and calibration-free quantification of non-uniform temperature fields in complex reacting flows. Specifically, the R1(11)/R1(7) line pair of the OH A2Σ+-X2Π(0,0) rovibronic band was probed with laser radiation near 306.5 nm, and their fluorescence ratios were used to infer temperature. Preliminary demonstrations of this thermometry method were performed in a series of burner-stabilized CH4-air flames.

Abstract:A combination of flash photolysis reactor tube and synchrotron radiation photoionization mass spectrometer has been constructed for the study of the gas phase chemical kinetics. The radical-molecule chemical reactions in a side-sampled flow tubular reactor are initiated by a pulsed photolysis laser. Then the gas mixture is sampled via a pinpole and photoionized by tunable synchrotron radiation VUV photons. The constant flux ions are detected by the subsequent time-of-flight mass spectrometer. At the same time, pulsed generator generates a burst of pulses with duration of 40-50 s, which initiate the collection of mass spectrometer. The continuous collection covers the overall reaction time. The time resolution of mass spectrometer is 40 s, fulfilling the detection of transient or stable species on a millisecond time scale. In addition, the reaction products are directly detected by mass spectrometer and different structural isomers can be distinguished by photoionization efficiency curves. The experiment utilizing Cl radical reaction with 1-butene and isobutene obtains the addition and abstraction products as well as their photoionization energies.

Abstract:Molecular evolution in laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is conventionally diagnosed by observing molecular spontaneous emission (SE). In this work, laser-induced molecular fluorescence (LIMF) was introduced to investigate molecular evolution in laser-induced plasma. Aluminium monoxide (AlO) was taken as a typical example for demonstration. AlO molecules in the X-2 Sigma(+) state were stimulated by a 484.82 nm laser beam, and then 510.21 nm fluorescence was observed. Compared with conventional SE in LIBS, the proposed LIMF demonstrated that it took more time to fully combine aluminum and oxygen atoms to AlO molecules. Moreover, the longer lifetime of the AlO in plasma was observed.

Abstract:A special class of molecules that are important to many subfields in molecular dynamics and chemical physics, namely free radical molecules, now enjoy a significant degree of center-of-mass motion control in the laboratory frame. The example reported in this paper concerns hydroxyl radical (OH), which, after the internal degrees of freedom are cooled in a supersonic expansion, has been bunched, accelerated, and slowed using time-varying inhomogeneous electric fields. In situ observations of laser-induced fluorescence along the beam propagation path allows for detailed characterization of the longitudinal phase-space manipulation of OH molecules by the electric fields. The creation of a pulse containing 1e3 to 1e6 molecules possessing a longitudinal velocity spread from 2 to 80 m/s around a mean laboratory velocity variable from 550 m/s to rest with only a few mm spatial extent represents an exciting and useful new experimental capability for exploring free radical dynamics. This paper offers the most detailed study of the Stark deceleration dynamics to date.

Abstract:The absorption spectra and the kinetics of the self-reactions of small organic peroxyl radicals (RO2, with R = CH3, C2H5 and C3H7) have been investigated in aqueous solution. Laser-based radical generation and time-resolved broadband-diode array UV spectroscopy in a flow system were applied in this study. Absolute decadic absorption coefficients for the three radicals are given in intervals of 2 nm and the results of a study of the temperature dependence of their recombination reactions are presented.

Abstract:The spectroscopy and dynamics of molecular excited states are important for the understanding of molecular electronic structures and the interactions among the electronic motion, nuclear vibration and molecular rotation. We have set up an IR-IR double optical resonance experimental apparatus to study the perturbation facilitated two photon resonance in alkaline dimers. Using an XUV laser and zero kinetic energy photoelectron spectroscopy we have studied the spectroscopy of various important molecular ions, such as the electronic-vibrational interaction in CH_3CN~+/CD_3CN~+ (the Jahn-Teller effect).
A hydroxyl radical detection system using gas expansion and fast gating laser-induced fluorescence techniques

Abstract:An OH radical measurement instrument based on Fluorescence Assay by Gas Expansion (FAGE) has been developed in our laboratory. Ambient air is introduced into a low-pressure fluorescence cell through a pinhole aperture and irradiated by a dye laser at a high repetition rate of 8.5kHz. The OH radical is both excited and detected at 308nm using A-X(0,0) band. To satisfy the high efficiency needs of fluorescence collection and detection, a 4-lens optical system and a self-designed gated photomultiplier (PMT) is used, and gating is actualized by switching the voltage applied on the PMT dynodes. A micro channel photomultiplier (MCP) is also prepared for fluorescence detection. Then the weak signal is accumulated by a photon counter in a specific timing. The OH radical excitation spectrum range in the wavelength of 307.82-308.2nm is detected and the excited line for OH detection is determined to be Q1(2) line. The calibration of the FAGE system is researched by using simultaneous photolysis of H2O and O2. The minimum detection limit of the instrument using gated PMT is determined to be 9.4×105molecules/cm3, and the sensitivity is 9.5×10-7cps/(OH·cm-3), with a signal-to-noise ratio of 2 and an integration time of 60sec, while OH detection limit and the detection sensitivity using MCP is calculated to be 1.6×105molecules/cm3 and 2.3×10-6cps/(OH·cm-3). The laboratory OH radical measurement is carried out and results show that the proposed system can be used for atmospheric OH radical measurement.

Abstract:In pump-probe experiments employing a free-electron laser (FEL) in combination with a synchronized optical femtosecond laser, the arrival-time jitter between the FEL pulse and the optical laser pulse often severely limits the temporal resolution that can be achieved. Here, we present a pump-probe experiment on the UV-induced dissociation of 2,6-difluoroiodobenzene (C6H3F2I) molecules performed at the FLASH FEL that takes advantage of recent upgrades of the FLASH timing and synchronization system to obtain high-quality data that are not limited by the FEL arrival-time jitter. We discuss in detail the necessary data analysis steps and describe the origin of the time-dependent effects in the yields and kinetic energies of the fragment ions that we observe in the experiment.

Abstract:Based on the inherent molecular structure characteristics of the OH radicals, the energy level distribution, the transition frequency and Einstein spontaneous emission transition probability are systematically analyzed and numerically studied. Meanwhile, combined with the spectra experiments, the natural broadening, collision broadening, Doppler broadening and instrumental broadening effects on spectral line shape are analyzed. The dependence of the spectral profile on the rotational temperature, the vibrational temperature, and the spectral function are numerically explored in certain ranges. The corresponding numerical results are also discussed for the emission spectra thermometry, which provides a theoretical basis for the emission thermometry. In experimental, the emission spectra of OH (A2Σ+→X2Πr) system of the hydrogen flames are recorded by the optical multi-channel analyzer and studied. By the fitting of the experimental spectra to the numerically calculated spectra, the corresponding rotational and vibrational temperatures of the hydrogen flames are determined, respectively.

Abstract:Extreme ultraviolet (XUV) attosecond pulses, generated by a process known as laser-induced electron recollision, are a key ingredient for attosecond metrology, providing a tool to precisely initiate and probe sub-femtosecond dynamics in the microcosms of atoms, molecules and solids[1]. However, with the current technology, extending attosecond metrology to scrutinize the dynamics of the inner-shell electrons is a challenge, that is because of the lower efficiency in generating the required soft x-ray \hbar\omega>300 eV attosecond bursts and the lower absorption cross-sections in this spectral range. A way around this problem is to use the recolliding electron to directly initiate the desired inner-shell process, instead of using the currently low flux x-ray attosecond <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://sources.Such" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> an excitation process occurs in a sub-femtosecond timescale, and may provide the necessary "pump" step in a pump-probe experiment[2]. Here we used a few cycle infrared \lambda_{0}~1800nm source[3] and observed direct evidences for inner-shell excitations through the laser-induced electron recollision process. It is the first step toward time-resolved core-hole studies in the keV energy range with sub-femtosecond time resolution.

Low Duty Cycle Pulsed UV Technique for Spectroscopy of Aluminum Monochloride

Abstract:We present a novel technique to minimize UV-induced damage in experiments that employ second-harmonic generation cavities. The principle of our approach is to reduce the duty cycle of the UV light as much as possible to prolong the lifetime of the used optics. The low duty cycle is achieved by ramping the cavity into resonance for a short time during the experimental cycle when the light is used and tuning it to an off-resonant state otherwise. The necessary fast ramp and length-stabilization control of the cavity is implemented with the FPGA-based STEMlab platform. We demonstrate the utility of this method by measuring the isotope shift of the electronic transition ($X^1\Sigma \leftarrow A^1\Pi$) in AlCl at 261.5 nm in a pulsed molecular beam experiment.

Abstract:An apparatus has been constructed to study radical–radical reactions in the gas phase. It consists of a tubular quartz reactor in which radicals are produced by flash photolysis using an excimer laser as light source. The composition of the gas mixture is analyzed in situ by photoionizing sampled gases using the vacuum ultraviolet emission of a hollow cathode lamp and subsequent time-of-flight mass spectrometry. A simple arrangement of grids at the entrance to the flight tube is used to interrupt the constant flux of ions by application of a combination of constant and pulsed voltages. Individual mass spectra can be taken at a repetition rate of around 20 kHz following each photolysis event. Signal counts from a specified number of consecutive mass spectra are fed into a 2 GHz multiscaler and accumulated as a sampling-time-indexed series of mass spectra. This allows simultaneous observation of the concentrations of multiple transient or stable species on a millisecond time scale. To achieve a suitable signal-to-noise ratio, signals were typically accumulated over several tens of thousands of laser shots at a pulse rate of 10–15 Hz.

Abstract:X-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy using an X-ray free electron laser is demonstrated with spectra over the Fe L$_{3,2}$-edges. This new ultrafast time-resolved capability is then applied to a fluence-dependent study of all-optical magnetic switching dynamics of Fe and Gd magnetic sublattices in a GdFeCo thin film above its magnetization compensation temperature. At the magnetic switching fuence, we corroborate the existence of a transient ferromagnetic-like state. The timescales of the dynamics, however, are longer than previously observed below the magnetization compensation temperature. Above and below the switching fluence range, we observe secondary demagnetization with about 5 ps timescales. This indicates that the spin thermalization takes longer than 5 ps.

Abstract:Gas-phase radicals can react rapidly with various gaseous molecules, which play a vital role in catalyzing reactions in atmospheric, combustion and interstellar chemistry. A range of experimental techniques such as fluorescence and absorption spectrometry have been employed to study the reaction processes of gas-phase radicals and acquired some important results. Despite of the sufficient sensibility in the measurement of transient species, most of these techniques are limited to small radicals with small molecules, inaccessible to bigger radicals or multiplexed detection. Lately, a combination of flow reactor, flash laser photolysis and synchrotron radiation (SR) photoionization mass spectrometry (PIMS), serves as a universal, multiplexed, selective and sensitive method, ideal for the chemical kinetics study. Pulsed photolysis laser is used to initiate radical reaction, SR vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) light source to ionize the molecules emerging from the side pinepole and mass spectrometer to detect multiple species in the reactions (especially many-atom species). A plenty of original works such as the studies of CN, OH and alkylperoxy radical reactions have been done using double-focusing mass spectrometer or time-of-flight mass spectrometer and identified to be in fair agreement with the previous methods. Furthermore, the extra ordinary capability of time- and energy-resolution can be widely applicable in the kinetics study of some important radicals such as alkylperoxy and aromatic radicals in atmospheric, combustion, and interstellar chemistry.

Abstract:Laser-induced fluorescence excitation spectrum of oxalyl cholride (C2O2Cl2) in the rang of 358-372.5nm has been observed. More than 60 vibrational transitions have been assigned, in which 24 bands were not found in absorption spectrum. From the vibrational structure, we obtained some of the vibrational frequencies in ground state and excited state in which v＂7=84cm-1 and v＇7= 164cm-1 are new data. The rotational analysis of high resolved 401 band leads to the rotational constants A = 0.190cm-1, B = 0.114cm-1, and C = 0.048cm-1.
