Abstract:An unexplained surface anisotropy effect was observed and confirmed in the magnetization reversal process of both L10 phase FePt nanoparticles with octahedral shape and (001) textured L10 FePt thin films with island nanostructures. We suggest that the nature of the observed surface effect is caused by broken symmetry on the FePt surface, which results in weakened exchange coupling for surface atoms. Furthermore, we propose, and experimentally demonstrate, a method to repair the broken symmetry by capping the FePt islands with a Pt layer, which could prove invaluable in understanding fundamental limitations of magnetic nanostructures.

Abstract:We have prepared L10-FePt films by sputtering FePt∕Au mutilayers on glass substrates followed by a vacuum annealing process. The magnetic measurement and x-ray diffraction indicate that the ordering temperature of the FePt films is reduced to 350°C and the coercivity (HC) is greatly enhanced by using the FePt∕Au multilayer structure. The interface energy and the stress energy due to the misfit between FePt and Au crystal lattices provide extra driving force to the ordering process of FePt films. Additionally, partial Au atoms are supposed to diffuse to the FePt grain boundaries during annealing, which consequently pins the magnetic domain wall and leads to the high HC.
Structural and Magnetic Investigations on FePt Nanoparticles

Abstract:Magnetic nanoparticles and thin films exhibiting a large magnetic anisotropy energy density (MAE) have attracted enormous attention over the last years due to their potential use in magnetic data storage or sensing applications. FePt alloy nanoparticles and films have a huge MAE in the chemically ordered L10 phase. This ordered phase is typically obtained by annealing the as-prepared chemically disordered fcc FePt nanoparticles at temperatures above 600°C. Besides standard colloidal approaches [1], such fcc FePt nanoparticles can be fabricated by a micellar technique resulting in regular arrays on various substrates [2,3]. This approach offers the advantage that the interparticle distance can be tuned between 20-100 nm. Due to the larger separation particle agglomeration can be avoided during the annealing induced transformation into the L10 phase. Moreover, the particles are magnetostatically decoupled. We investigated the formation of the L10 phase for 2-10 nm FePt particles as a function of the annealing temperature and time on Si/SiOx substrates. Hysteresis loops at T = 15K reveal strongly enhanced coercive field after an annealing step at 700°C for 30 min compared to the as-prepared particles. The effective MAE is found to be 1-2×10 J/m using simple Stoner-Wohlfarth modeling that is a factor of 3-5 smaller than the FePt bulk MAE. In order to correlate the magnetic properties to the structure of the particles we performed transmission electron microscopy (TEM) investigations of FePt particles on both, Si/SiOx and MgO(001) substrates. Basically, the lowered MAE could originate from defective crystal structures, imperfect ordering of Feand Pt-planes (chemical ordering parameter), and/or inhomogeneous segregation of Fe/Pt within the particles. The applied TEM methods included conventional TEM (bright-field, dark-field, electron diffraction), spherical aberration corrected high resolution imaging and scanning TEM (Z-contrast). It was found that most particles contain defects such as stacking faults and multiple twins (Figure 1). Calculated TEM images based on various models of FePt nanoparticles (Figure 2) were generated and compared to experimental images especially to analyze and to determine the chemical ordering parameter of the L10 phase, crystal structure and defects.

Abstract:Multiple ordered states have been observed in unconventional superconductors. Here, we apply scanning tunneling microscopy to probe the intrinsic ordered states in FeSe, the structurally simplest iron-based superconductor. Besides the well-known nematic order along [100] direction, we observe a checkerboard charge order in the iron lattice, which we name a [110] electronic order in FeSe. The [110] electronic order is robust at 77 K, accompanied with the rather weak [100] nematic order. At 4.5 K, The [100] nematic order is enhanced, while the [110] electronic order forms domains with reduced correlation length. In addition, the collective [110] order is gaped around [−40, 40] meV at 4.5 K. The observation of this exotic electronic order may shed new light on the origin of the ordered states in FeSe.

Abstract:Structural and magnetic properties of core-shell type L1(0) FePt/Fe exchange coupled nanocomposites are studied systematically. Core-shell nanocomposites with FePt core and Fe shell are obtained by depositing Fe cap layers on granular L1(0) FePt films. Epitaxial growth is disclosed by x-ray diffraction. Coercivity decreases drastically for FePt/Fe with the thickness increase of Fe cap layers. The coercivity reduction is due to the much increased domain wall area pinned and compressed at the soft-hard interface, and the tilted effective easy axis because of the presence of demagnetized energy. Chemical order-disorder nanodomains in Fe3Pt bulk alloy

Abstract:Chemical ordering is a common phenomenon and highly correlated with the properties of solid materials. By means of the redistribution of atoms and chemical bonds, it invokes an effective lattice adjustment and tailors corresponding physical properties. To date, however, directly probing the 3D interfacial interactions of chemical ordering remains a big challenge. In this work, we deciphered the interlaced distribution of nanosized domains with chemical order/disorder in Fe3Pt bulk alloy. HAADF-STEM images evidence the existence of such nanodomains. The reverse Monte Carlo method with the X-ray pair distribution function data reveal the 3D distribution of local structures and the tensile effect in the disordered domains at the single-atomic level. The chemical bonding around the domain boundary changes the bonding feature in the disordered side and reduces the local magnetic moment of Fe atoms. This results in a suppressed negative thermal expansion and extended temperature range in Fe3Pt bulk alloy with nanodomains. Our study demonstrates a local revelation for the chemical order/disorder nanodomains in bulk alloy. The understanding gained from atomic short-range interactions within the domain boundaries provides useful insights with regard to designing new functional compounds.

Abstract:FePt thin films have been prepared at different substrate temperatures by DC magnetron co-sputtering. The films change from a disordered fee structure to a L1(0) fct structure with temperature. The magnetic and the magneto-optical properties of those FePt films have been studied. The dependence of spectral changes on the formation of a chemically-ordered L1(0)structure is observed in the polar magneto-optical Kerr rotation. In the spectra, the ultraviolet peak located in the high-energy range (4.0 - 4.5 eV), which is related to electronic transitions on Pt atomic sites, is observed for all samples. On the contrary, the peak related to transitions on Fe atomic sites, which is located in the low-energy range (1.5 - 2.0 eV), is only observed for highly chemically-ordered samples. Compared with the spectra for the L1(0) structure of FePt films prepared by using molecular beam epitaxy, the infrared peak related to Fe sites is shifted to low energy.

Abstract:We report collective ferromagnetic behavior with high Curie temperatures (T-c) in Fe dot assemblies supported by the Cu(111) surface. Our ability to tune the average size and spacing of the individual dots allows us to conclude that enhanced magnetic anisotropy cannot account for this high-T-c ferromagnetic order. Because our Monte Carlo simulations have ruled out the dipolar interaction as the dominant factor in this system, we attribute the origin of the ferromagnetic order to indirect exchange coupling via the Cu(111) substrate.

Abstract:The magnetic and structural properties of atomic-scale [Fe/Pt]18 and [Fe/Pt/Ag]18 multilayer films annealed at 350 and 400°C have been investigated. The results indicate that, by introducing thin Ag addition layers, the ordering temperature of FePt with nominal 7.4-nm thickness (excluding Ag thickness) can be significantly reduced to 350°C, at which a relatively large coercivity is achieved. When annealing temperature increases to 400°C, the atomic-scale [Fe/Pt]18 and [Fe/Pt/Ag]18 multilayer films show (001) orientation. The reduced diffusion length of atoms in atomic-scale multilayer films and an enhanced atomic diffusion coefficient produced by Ag doping led to the low-temperature ordering and (001) orientation of L10 FePt phase.

Abstract:Using soft-x-ray diffraction at the site-specific resonances in the Fe L23 edge, we find clear evidence for orbital and charge ordering in magnetite below the Verwey transition. The spectra show directly that the (001/2) diffraction peak (in cubic notation) is caused by t2g orbital ordering at octahedral Fe2+ sites and the (001) by a spatial modulation of the t2g occupation.

Abstract:The Fe54Pt46 thin film was deposited on SiO2〈0001〉 substrate by magnetron sputtering system,then the as-deposited film was vacuum annealed at 650 ℃ in situ.The structure and magnetic properties of the film were investigated by means of X-ray diffraction and vibrating sample magnetometer.The results indicate that phase transformation from disordered to ordered phase happened after vacuum annealing in situ.The face-centered tetragonal L10-FePt thin film was obtained.Degree of chemical ordering is 0.92 and grain size is about 10 nm.The in-plane coercivity of the film has reached 0.8 MA/m.The maximum value of coercivity was gained when the angle between magnetic filed and film surface is 50° corresponding to(111) minimum energy surface.

Abstract:As a foundation of condensed matter physics, the normal states of most metals are successfully described by Landau Fermi liquid theory with quasi-particles and their Fermi surfaces (FSs). The FSs sometimes become deformed or gapped at low temperatures owing to quasi-particle interactions, known as FS instabilities. A notable example of a FS deformation that breaks only the rotation symmetry, namely Pomeranchuk instability, is the d-wave FS distortion, which is also proposed as one possible origin of electron nematicity in iron-based superconductors. However, no clear evidence has been made for its existence, mostly owing to the mixture of multiple orders. Here we report an unequivocally observation of the Pomeranchuk nematic order in floating monolayer (ML) FeSe on 1 ML-FeSe/SrTiO3 substrate. By using angle-resolve photoemission spectroscopy, we find remarkably that the dxz and dyz bands are degenerate at the Brillouin zone center (Gamma point), while their splitting is even larger at zone corner (M point), in stark contrast to that in bulk FeSe. Our detailed analysis show that the momentum-dependent nematic order in floating monolayer FeSe is coming from the d-wave Pomeranchuk instability at M point, shedding light on the origin of the ubiquitous nematicity in iron-based superconductors. Our results establish the single-layer high-Tc superconductors as an excellent material platform for investigating emergent quantum physics under complex intertwinement.

Abstract:We have studied the electronic structure of the L10 ordered FePt thin film by hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HAXPES), cluster model, and first-principles calculations to investigate the relationship between the electronic structure and perpendicular magneto-crystalline anisotropy (MCA). The Fe 2p core-level HAXPES spectrum of the ordered film revealed the strong electron correlation in the Fe 3d states and the hybridization between the Fe 3d and Pt 5d states. By comparing the experimental valence band structure with the theoretical density of states, the strong electron correlation in the Fe 3d states modifies the valence band electronic structure of the L10 ordered FePt thin film through the Fe 3d-Pt 5d hybridization. These results strongly suggest that the strong electron correlation effect in the Fe 3d states and the Fe 3d-Pt 5d hybridization as well as the spin-orbit interaction in the Pt 5d states play important roles in the perpendicular MCA for L10-FePt.

Abstract:Arrays of FePt particles (diameter 7 nm) with mean interparticle distances of 60 nm are prepared by a micellar technique on Si substrates. The phase transition of these magnetic particles towards the chemically ordered L1(0) phase is tracked for 350 kV He+ ion irradiated samples and compared to a nonirradiated reference. Due to the large separation of the magnetically decoupled particles the array can be safely annealed without any agglomeration as usually observed for more densely packed colloidal FePt nanoparticles. The He+ ion exposure yields a significant reduction of the ordering temperature by more than 100 K. (c) 2007 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract:L10 ordered FePt and FePtCu nanoparticles (NPs) with a good dispersion were successfully fabricated by a simple, green, one-step solid-phase reduction method. Fe (acac)3, Pt (acac)2, and CuO as the precursors were dispersed in NaCl and annealed at different temperatures with an H2-containing atmosphere. As the annealing temperature increased, the chemical order parameter (S), average particle size (D), coercivity (Hc), and saturation magnetization (Ms) of FePt and FePtCu NPs increased and the size distribution range of the particles became wider. The ordered degree, D, Hc, and Ms of FePt NPs were greatly improved by adding 5% Cu. The highest S, D, Hc, and Ms were obtained when FePtCu NPs annealed at 750 °C, which were 0.91, 4.87 nm, 12,200 Oe, and 23.38 emu/g, respectively. The structure and magnetic properties of FePt and FePtCu NPs at different annealing temperatures were investigated and the formation mechanism of FePt and FePtCu NPs were discussed in detail.

Abstract:We report the first comprehensive high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurements on CeFeAsO, a parent compound of FeAs-based high temperature superconductors with a magnetic-structural transition at ∼150 K. In the magnetic-ordering state, four holelike Fermi surface sheets are observed near Γ(0,0), and the Fermi surface near M(±π,±π) shows a tiny electronlike pocket at M surrounded by four strong spots. The unusual Fermi surface topology deviates strongly from the band structure calculations. The electronic signature of the magnetic-structural transition shows up in the dramatic change of the quasiparticle scattering rate. A dispersion kink at ∼25 meV is observed for the first time in the parent compound of Fe-based superconductors.
