Deconfinement and hadron properties at extremes of temperature and density

Abstract:After introducing essential, qualitative concepts and results, we discuss the application of Dyson-Schwinger equations to QCD at finite T and μ. We summarise the calculation of the critical exponents of two-light-flavour QCD using the chiral and thermal susceptibilities; and an algebraic model that elucidates the origin of an anticorrelation between the μ- and T-dependence of a range of meson properties. That model also provides an algebraic understanding of why the finite-T behaviour of bulk thermodynamic properties is mirrored in their μ-dependence, and why meson masses decrease with μ even though φπ and −<qq> increase. The possibility of diquark condensation is canvassed. Its realisation is uncertain because it is contingent upon an assumption about the quark-quark scattering kernel that is demonstrably false in some applications; e.g., it predicts the existence of coloured diquarks in the strong interaction spectrum, which are not observed.

Abstract:Since it started in 2005, the subfield of studying quantum chromodynamics (QCD) phase structure has developed very rapidly. This is partly because the discovery of the strongly interacting quark-gluon plasma (sQGP), at the vanishing net-baryon densities, at RHIC and LHC and partly due to the successful of the RHIC beam energy scan program. During November 7–11, 2011, the 7th International Workshop on Critical Point and Onset of Deconfinement (CPOD2011) was held at the College of Physical Science and Technology, Central China Normal University. More than two hundred participants attend this workshop and about eighty of them are graduate students or fresh postdocs. The focus of the workshop was the phase structure of the QCD matter. Recent progresses on experimental results of energy dependence of particle production, correlations and fluctuations, and on theoretical results from the Lattice QCD calculations and other other QCD model results were presented at the workshop. As the result of the discussion, this special issue of the Central European Journal of Physics collects more than forty papers focusing on the progress in the research of QCD

Abstract:Deconfinement and chiral symmetry restoration are explored in a confining, renormalizable, Dyson-Schwinger equation model of two-flavor QCD. An order parameter for deconfinement is introduced and used to establish that, in the chiral limit, deconfinement and chiral symmetry restoration are coincident at T-c approximate to 150 MeV. The transitions are second order and each has the same critical exponent: beta approximate to 0.3. The deconfinement transition exhibits sensitivity to the current-quark mass. f(pi) and m(pi) change by less than 10% for T < 0.7T(c); however, as T --> T-c, thermal fluctuations cause the pion bound state contribution to the four-point quark-antiquark correlation function to disappear.

Abstract:The phenomenon of the deconfinement -- the spectacular drop of the colorelectric string tension at the critical temperature $T_c$ -- is studied within the method of field correlators (FCM) taking into account directly the contribution of the gluon condensate into the hadronic free energy. Using the resulting expressions for the free energy as a sum of the gluon condensate (the vacuum energy) and the hadronic pressure one obtains the possibility to calculate the deconfinement temperature $T_c$ and the temperature behavior of the string tension $\sigma_E(T)$ and the gluonic condensate $G_2(T)$ below $T_c$. The connection between the string tension and the quark condensate found in the framework of FCM allows the predict also the latter as a function of $T$ . These results are compared to the known lattice data of $T_c$, $\sigma_E(T)$, $\langle \bar{q}q \rangle(T)$ for hadronic media with different $n_f$ and $m_q$ and in the external magnetic field $eB$. The good agreement of the results of this approach with lattice data is demonstrated.

QCD deconfinement transition line up to $μ_B=400$ MeV from finite volume lattice simulations

Abstract:The QCD cross-over line in the temperature ($T$) -- baryo-chemical potential ($\mu_B$) plane has been computed by several lattice groups by calculating the chiral order parameter and its susceptibility at finite values of $\mu_B$. In this work we focus on the deconfinement aspect of the transition between hadronic and Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP) phases. We define the deconfinement temperature as the peak position of the static quark entropy ($S_Q(T,\mu_B)$) in $T$, which is based on the renormalized Polyakov loop. We extrapolate $S_Q(T,\mu_B)$ based on high statistics finite temperature ensembles on a $16^3\times 8$ lattice to finite density by means of a Taylor expansion to eighth order in $\mu_B$ (NNNLO) along the strangeness neutral line. For the simulations the 4HEX staggered action was used with 2+1 flavors at physical quark masses. In this setup the phase diagram can be drawn up to unprecedentedly high chemical potentials. Our results for the deconfinement temperature are in rough agreement with phenomenological estimates of the freeze-out curve in relativistic heavy ion collisions. In addition, we study the width of the deconfinement crossover. We show that up to $\mu_B \approx 400$ MeV, the deconfinement transition gets broader at higher densities, disfavoring the existence of a deconfinement critical endpoint in this range. Finally, we examine the transition line without the strangeness neutrality condition and observe a hint for the narrowing of the crossover towards large $\mu_B$.

Abstract:We investigate the nature of the deconfinement transitions in three-dimensional lattice Abelian Higgs models, in which a complex scalar field of integer charge Q≥2 is minimally coupled with a compact U(1) gauge field. Their phase diagram presents two phases separated by a transition line where static charges q , with q<q , deconfine. We argue that these deconfinement transitions belong to the same universality class as transitions in generic three-dimensional ZQ gauge models. In particular, they are Ising-like for Q=2 , of first order for Q=3 , and belong to the three-dimensional gauge XY universality class for Q≥4 . The QCD deconfinement transition for heavy quarks and all baryon chemical potentials

Abstract:Using combined strong coupling and hopping parameter expansions, we derive an effective three-dimensional theory from thermal lattice QCD with heavy Wilson quarks. The theory depends on traced Polyakov loops only and correctly reflects the centre symmetry of the pure gauge sector as well as its breaking by finite mass quarks. It is valid up to certain orders in the lattice gauge coupling and hopping parameter, which can be systematically improved. To its current order it is controlled for lattices up to N_\tau\sim 6 at finite temperature. For nonzero quark chemical potentials, the effective theory has a fermionic sign problem which is mild enough to carry out simulations up to large chemical potentials. Moreover, by going to a flux representation of the partition function, the sign problem can be solved. As an application, we determine the deconfinement transition and its critical end point as a function of quark mass and all chemical potentials.

Abstract:Determinations of the gluon propagator in the continuum and in lattice simulations are compared. A systematic truncation procedure for the quark Dyson-Schwinger and bound state Bethe-Salpeter equations is described. The procedure ensures the flavour-octet axial-vector Ward identity is satisfied order-by-order, thereby guaranteeing the preservation of Goldstone's theorem; and identifies a mechanism that simultaneously ensures the absence of diquarks in QCD and their presence in QCD$^{N_c=2}$, where the colour singlet diquark is the ``baryon'' of the theory.

Abstract:We propose a novel quasiparticle interpretation of the equation of state of deconfined QCD at finite temperature. Using appropriate thermal masses, we introduce a phenomenological parametrization of the onset of confinement in the vicinity of the phase transition. Lattice results of the energy density, the pressure and the interaction measure of pure SU(3) gauge theory are well reproduced. A relation between the thermal energy density of the Yang-Mills vacuum and the chromomagnetic condensate <B^2>_T is found. We also present the two flavour QCD equation of state for realistic quark masses and apply the model to dilepton production in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions.
Partial deconfinement in QCD at $N=3$ and $N=\infty$

Abstract:We describe how the general mechanism of partial deconfinement applies to large-$N$ QCD and the partially-deconfined phase inevitably appears between completely-confined and completely-deconfined phases. Furthermore, we propose how the partial deconfinement can be observed in the real-world QCD with SU(3) gauge group. We propose the relationship between the behaviors of the Polyakov loop and other quantities. We test our proposal against lattice simulation data and find a nontrivial matching.

Probing Confinement Through Dynamical Quantum Phase Transitions: From Quantum Spin Models to Lattice Gauge Theories

Abstract:Confinement is an intriguing phenomenon prevalent in condensed matter and high-energy physics. Exploring its effect on the far-from-equilibrium criticality of quantum many-body systems is of great interest both from a fundamental and technological point of view. Here, we employ large-scale uniform matrix product state calculations to show that a qualitative change in the type of dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs) accompanies the confinement-deconfinement transition in three paradigmatic models -- the power-law interacting quantum Ising chain, the two-dimensional quantum Ising model, and the spin-$S$ $\mathrm{U}(1)$ quantum link model. By tuning a confining parameter in these models, it is found that \textit{branch} (\textit{manifold}) DQPTs arise as a signature of (de)confinement. Whereas manifold DQPTs are associated with a sign change of the order parameter, their branch counterparts are not, but rather occur even when the order parameter exhibits considerably constrained dynamics. Our conclusions can be tested in modern quantum-simulation platforms, such as ion-trap setups and cold-atom experiments of gauge theories.

Instanton confinement-deconfinement transitions: The stability of pseudogap phases and topological order

Abstract:We explore the stability of certain many-body quantum states which may exist at zero or finite temperatures, may lack long-range order and even topological order, and still are thermodynamically distinct from uncorrelated disordered phases. We sharply characterize such states by the conservation of topological charge, or equivalently confinement of instantons, using a generalization of the Wilson loop and the correlation length of an emergent gauge field. Our main conclusions are: (i) topological orders can exist at finite temperatures, (ii) relativistic liquids of topological defects can also exist as stable phases at finite temperatures, and (iii) there are two universality classes of instanton suppression. We also relate the instanton dynamics to the problem of the pseudogap state in underdoped cuprates. A universal experimental signature of the instanton deconfinement transition is a change of the quantum noise spectrum, which can perhaps be measured in some situations, for example via a quantum anomaly, or indirectly detected with a specific heat jump. The method of analysis is a functional renormalization group that generalizes the Coulomb gas treatment of Kosterlitz and Thouless to arbitrary interactions and dimensions. In particular, we construct an exact non-perturbative technique for confining interactions between instantons, which introduce irreparable infra-red divergences in the standard perturbative approaches.

Confinement in QCD and generic Yang-Mills theories with matter representations

Abstract:We derive the low-energy limit of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) and provide evidence that in the 't Hooft limit, i.e. for a very large number of colors and increasing 't Hooft coupling, quark confinement is recovered. The low energy limit of the theory turns out to be a non-local Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model. The effect of non-locality, arising from a gluon propagator that fits quite well to the profile of an instanton liquid, is to produce a phase transition from a chiral condensate to an instanton liquid, as the coupling increases with lower momentum. This phase transition suffices to move the poles of the quark propagator to the complex plane. As a consequence, free quarks are no longer physical states in the spectrum of the theory.

Abstract:First-order phase transitions in the early universe might produce a detectable background of gravitational waves. As these phase transitions can be generated by new physics, it is important to quantify these effects. Many pure Yang-Mills gauge theories are known to undergo first-order deconfinement phase transitions, with properties that can be studied with lattice simulations. Despite the recent surge of interest in $Sp(2N)$ gauge theories as a candidate for models of physics beyond the standard model, studies of these theories at finite temperature are still very limited. In this contribution we will present preliminary results of an ongoing numerical investigation of the thermodynamic properties of the deconfinement phase transition in $Sp(4)$ Yang-Mills theory, using the linear logarithmic relaxation algorithm. This method enables us to obtain a highly accurate determination of the density of states, allowing for a precise reconstruction of thermodynamic observables. In particular, it gives access to otherwise difficult to determine quantities such as the free energy of the system, even along metastable and unstable branches, hence providing an additional direct observable to study the dynamics of the phase transition.

Confinement-Higgs and deconfinement-Higgs transitions in three-dimensional $Z(2)$ LGT

Abstract:We re-examine by numerical simulation the phase structure of the three-dimensional Abelian lattice gauge theory (LGT) with $Z(2)$ gauge fields coupled to $Z(2)$-valued Higgs fields. Concretely, we explore two different order parameters which are able to distinguish the three phases of the theory: (i) the Fredenhagen-Marcu operator used to discriminate between deconfinement and confinement/Higgs phases and (ii) the Greensite-Matsuyama overlap operator proposed recently to distinguish confinement and Higgs phases. The latter operator is an analog of the overlap Edwards-Anderson order parameter for spin-glasses. According to it, the Higgs phase is realized as a glassy phase of the gauge system. For this reason standard tricks for simulations of spin-glass phases are utilized in this work, namely tempered Monte Carlo and averaging over replicas. In addition, we also present results for a certain definition of distance between Higgs field configurations. Finally, we calculate various gauge-invariant correlation functions in order to extract the corresponding masses.

Abstract:The temperature dependence of the Landau gauge ghost propagator is investigated in pure SU(3) Yang-Mills theory with lattice QCD simulations. Its behavior around the confined-deconfined phase transition temperature, T c ∼ 270 MeV, is investigated. The simulations show that in the deconfined phase, the ghost propagator is enhanced for small momenta, ≲ 1 GeV. Furthermore, the analysis of the spontaneous breaking of center symmetry on the ghost propagator is studied. Similarly as observed for the gluon propagator, the simulations result in a decoupling of the sectors where the phase of the Polyakov loop is either 0 or ±2 π /3 sectors, with the latter remaining indistinguishable. The results point to the possible use of the ghost propagator as an "order parameter" for the confined-deconfined phase transition.
