Abstract:We discuss the spectrum of screening masses in a pure gauge theory near the deconfinement temperature from the point of view of the dimensionally reduced model describing the spontaneous breaking of the center symmetry. Universality arguments can be used to predict the values of the mass ratios in the scaling region of the deconfined phase when the transition is of second order. One such prediction is that the scalar sector of the screening spectrum in SU(2) pure gauge theory contains a bound state of the fundamental excitation, corresponding through universality to the bound state found in the 3D Ising model and phi^4 theory in the broken symmetry phase. A Monte Carlo evaluation of the screening masses in the gauge theory confirms the validity of the prediction. We briefly discuss the possibility of using similar arguments for first order deconfinement transitions, and in particular for the physically relevant case of SU(3).

Abstract:The temperature dependence of the Landau gauge ghost propagator is investigated in pure SU(3) Yang-Mills theory with lattice QCD simulations. Its behavior around the confined-deconfined phase transition temperature, T c ∼ 270 MeV, is investigated. The simulations show that in the deconfined phase, the ghost propagator is enhanced for small momenta, ≲ 1 GeV. Furthermore, the analysis of the spontaneous breaking of center symmetry on the ghost propagator is studied. Similarly as observed for the gluon propagator, the simulations result in a decoupling of the sectors where the phase of the Polyakov loop is either 0 or ±2 π /3 sectors, with the latter remaining indistinguishable. The results point to the possible use of the ghost propagator as an "order parameter" for the confined-deconfined phase transition.

Abstract:In a recent article [1], we have identified new signatures for the Yang-Mills deconfinement transition, based on the finite-temperature longitudinal or (chromo-)electric gluon propagator as computed in the center-symmetric Landau gauge. Here, we generalize these considerations into a systematic study of the center symmetry identities obeyed by the correlation functions in this gauge. Any violation of these constraints signals the breaking of center symmetry and can thus serve as a probe for the deconfinement transition.

Abstract:Using non-perturbative lattice method we studied hadronic screening correlators above and immediately below the deconfinement transition temperature, Tc, in the quenched approximation with lattice spacing of 1/(8T) using clover improved Wilson fermions. Simulations were performed at temperatures T /Tc = 0, 0.95 and 1.5. Mesonic screening correlators show no statistically significant thermal effects below Tc, and clear evidence for weakly interacting quarks above Tc . Baryon screening correlators yield similar physics above Tc, but show precursor effects for chiral symmetry restoration below Tc .

Abstract:We consider a BRST invariant generalization of the "massive background Landau gauge", resembling the original Curci-Ferrari model that saw a revived interest due to its phenomenological success in modeling infrared Yang-Mills dynamics, including that of the phase transition. Unlike the Curci-Ferrari model, however, the mass parameter is no longer a phenomenological input but it enters as a result of dimensional transmutation via a BRST invariant dimension two gluon condensate. The associated renormalization constant is dealt with using Zimmermann's reduction of constants program which fixes the value of the mass parameter to values close to those obtained within the Curci-Ferrari approach. Using a self-consistent background field, we can include the Polyakov loop and probe the deconfinement transition, including its interplay with the condensate and its electric-magnetic asymmetry. We report a continuous phase transition at Tc ~ 0.230 GeV in the SU(2) case and a first order one at Tc ~ 0.164 GeV in the SU(3) case, values which are again rather close to those obtained within the Curci-Ferrari model at one-loop order.

Electric and magnetic Landau-gauge gluon propagators in finite-temperature SU(2) gauge theory

Abstract:We perform lattice simulations in pure-SU(2) Yang-Mills theory to investigate how the infrared behavior of electric and magnetic gluon propagators in Landau gauge is affected by temperature. We consider the largest lattices to date, in an attempt to keep systematic errors under control. Electric and magnetic screening masses are calculated through an Ansatz from the zero-temperature case, based on complex-conjugate poles for the momentum-space propagators. As recently reported in [1], we find good fits to the proposed form at all temperatures considered, with different ratios of real to imaginary part of the pole masses for the longitudinal (electric) and transverse (magnetic) propagators. The behavior of the magnetic propagator D_T(p) is in agreement with the dimensional-reduction picture, showing infrared suppression (with a turnover in momentum) and violation of spectral positivity at all nonzero temperatures considered. The longitudinal propagator D_L(p) appears to reach a plateau at small momenta and is subject to severe finite-Nt effects around the critical temperature Tc. As a consequence, only lattices with temporal extent Nt > 8 seem to be free from systematic errors. After these errors are removed, the infrared-plateau value is considerably reduced around the transition and the sharp peak observed previously for this quantity at Tc is no longer present. The resulting infrared behavior for D_L(p) at Tc is essentially the same as for 0.5Tc . An investigation of the temperature range between 0.5Tc and Tc reveals that a less pronounced (finite) peak may occur at smaller temperatures, e.g. T ~ 0.9Tc.

Abstract:We analyze the confinement/deconfinement transition of pure Yang-Mills theories within the framework of the center-symmetric Landau gauge supplemented by a Curci-Ferrari mass term that models the effect of the associated Gribov copies in the infrared. In addition to providing details for earlier one-loop calculations in that framework, we explore how the results depend on the renormalization scale and/or on the renormalization scheme. We find that the predicted values for the transition temperatures of SU($2$) and SU($3$) Yang-Mills theories are similar in both schemes and are little sensitive to the renormalization scale $\mu$ over a wide range of values including the standard range $\smash{\mu\in[\pi T,4\pi T]}$. These values are also close both to those obtained from a minimal sensitivity principle and to those of lattice simulations, especially in the SU($3$) case. These results further confirm the good behavior of perturbative calculations within the Curci-Ferrari model and support the adequacy of the latter as an effective description of Yang-Mills theories in the infrared. We perform a similar analysis for the spinodal temperatures in the SU($3$) case and for the Polyakov loop, the order parameter associated to the breaking of center symmetry.

Baryon and Meson Screening Masses

Abstract:In a strongly-coupled quark-gluon plasma, collective excitations of gluons and quarks should dominate over the excitation of individual quasi-free gluon and quark modes. To explore this possibility, we computed screening masses for ground-state light-quark mesons and baryons at leading-order in a symmetry-preserving truncation scheme for the Dyson-Schwinger equations using a confining formulation of a contact-interaction at nonzero temperature. Meson screening masses are obtained from Bethe-Salpeter equations; and baryon analogues from a novel construction of the Faddeev equation, which employs an improved quark-exchange approximation in the kernel. Our treatment implements a deconfinement transition that is coincident with chiral symmetry restoration in the chiral limit, when both transitions are second order. Despite deconfinement, in all T=0 bound-state channels, strong correlations persist above the critical temperature, T>T_c; and, in the spectrum defined by the associated screening masses, degeneracy between parity-partner correlations is apparent for T >1.3T_c. Notwithstanding these results, there are reasons (including Golberger-Treiman relations) to suppose that the inertial masses of light-quark bound-states, when they may be defined, vanish at the deconfinement temperature; and that this is a signal of bound-state dissolution. Where a sensible comparison is possible, our predictions are consistent with results from contemporary numerical simulations of lattice-regularised QCD.

Abstract:The phenomenon of the deconfinement -- the spectacular drop of the colorelectric string tension at the critical temperature $T_c$ -- is studied within the method of field correlators (FCM) taking into account directly the contribution of the gluon condensate into the hadronic free energy. Using the resulting expressions for the free energy as a sum of the gluon condensate (the vacuum energy) and the hadronic pressure one obtains the possibility to calculate the deconfinement temperature $T_c$ and the temperature behavior of the string tension $\sigma_E(T)$ and the gluonic condensate $G_2(T)$ below $T_c$. The connection between the string tension and the quark condensate found in the framework of FCM allows the predict also the latter as a function of $T$ . These results are compared to the known lattice data of $T_c$, $\sigma_E(T)$, $\langle \bar{q}q \rangle(T)$ for hadronic media with different $n_f$ and $m_q$ and in the external magnetic field $eB$. The good agreement of the results of this approach with lattice data is demonstrated.

Abstract:The QCD cross-over line in the temperature ($T$) -- baryo-chemical potential ($\mu_B$) plane has been computed by several lattice groups by calculating the chiral order parameter and its susceptibility at finite values of $\mu_B$. In this work we focus on the deconfinement aspect of the transition between hadronic and Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP) phases. We define the deconfinement temperature as the peak position of the static quark entropy ($S_Q(T,\mu_B)$) in $T$, which is based on the renormalized Polyakov loop. We extrapolate $S_Q(T,\mu_B)$ based on high statistics finite temperature ensembles on a $16^3\times 8$ lattice to finite density by means of a Taylor expansion to eighth order in $\mu_B$ (NNNLO) along the strangeness neutral line. For the simulations the 4HEX staggered action was used with 2+1 flavors at physical quark masses. In this setup the phase diagram can be drawn up to unprecedentedly high chemical potentials. Our results for the deconfinement temperature are in rough agreement with phenomenological estimates of the freeze-out curve in relativistic heavy ion collisions. In addition, we study the width of the deconfinement crossover. We show that up to $\mu_B \approx 400$ MeV, the deconfinement transition gets broader at higher densities, disfavoring the existence of a deconfinement critical endpoint in this range. Finally, we examine the transition line without the strangeness neutrality condition and observe a hint for the narrowing of the crossover towards large $\mu_B$.

Abstract:We calculate the Debye screening mass in thermal, dense and magnetized QCD matter in the frame of resummed perturbation theory. In the limit of zero temperature, when the Landau energy level and Fermi surface of quarks match each other $\mu_q^2=2n|qB|$, where $q$, $\mu_q$ and $B$ are respectively the quark electric charge, chemical potential and external magnetic field, the screening mass diverges and the system is in the state of weakly interacting parton gas, which is very different from the known result of strongly interacting quark-gluon plasma at high temperature. The divergence disappears in thermal medium, but the screening mass oscillates with clear peaks at the matched magnetic field.

Baryonic Screening Masses in High Temperature QCD

Abstract:We compute the screening masses of fields with nucleon quantum numbers for a wide range of temperatures between $T \sim 1$ GeV and $T\sim 160$ GeV. The computation has been performed by means of Monte Carlo simulations of lattice QCD with $N_f=3$ flavors of $O(a)$-improved Wilson fermions: we exploit a novel strategy which has recently allowed to determine for the first time non-singlet mesonic screening masses up to extremely high temperatures. The baryonic screening masses are measured with a few per-mille precision in the continuum limit, and percent deviations from the free theory result $3\pi T$ are clearly visible even at the highest temperatures. The observed degeneracy of the positive and negative parity state's screening mass, expected from Ward identities associated to non-singlet axial transformations, provides further evidence for the restoration of chiral symmetry in the high temperature regime of QCD.

Abstract:We re-examine by numerical simulation the phase structure of the three-dimensional Abelian lattice gauge theory (LGT) with $Z(2)$ gauge fields coupled to $Z(2)$-valued Higgs fields. Concretely, we explore two different order parameters which are able to distinguish the three phases of the theory: (i) the Fredenhagen-Marcu operator used to discriminate between deconfinement and confinement/Higgs phases and (ii) the Greensite-Matsuyama overlap operator proposed recently to distinguish confinement and Higgs phases. The latter operator is an analog of the overlap Edwards-Anderson order parameter for spin-glasses. According to it, the Higgs phase is realized as a glassy phase of the gauge system. For this reason standard tricks for simulations of spin-glass phases are utilized in this work, namely tempered Monte Carlo and averaging over replicas. In addition, we also present results for a certain definition of distance between Higgs field configurations. Finally, we calculate various gauge-invariant correlation functions in order to extract the corresponding masses.

Abstract:We investigate the nature of the deconfinement transitions in three-dimensional lattice Abelian Higgs models, in which a complex scalar field of integer charge Q≥2 is minimally coupled with a compact U(1) gauge field. Their phase diagram presents two phases separated by a transition line where static charges q , with q<q , deconfine. We argue that these deconfinement transitions belong to the same universality class as transitions in generic three-dimensional ZQ gauge models. In particular, they are Ising-like for Q=2 , of first order for Q=3 , and belong to the three-dimensional gauge XY universality class for Q≥4 . Abstract:We propose a mechanism by which electric charges deconfine in an Abelian Higgs model with matter fields belonging to the fundamental representation of the gauge group. Kosterlitz-Thouless like recursion relations for a scale-dependent stiffness parameter and fugacity are given, showing that for a logarithmic potential between point charges in any dimension, there exists a stable fixed point at zero fugacity, with a dimensionality dependent universal jump in the stiffness parameter at the phase transition.
